About the Project

Last year I did a project converting the early 80s Judge Dredd board game by Ian Livingstone into an historical game. Instead of Judges and comic book villains I changed it to Georgian thieftakers and real life crimes and criminals in and around Nottingham. This time I'm moving the action into the next century dominated by the Victorians. Its interesting to see what crimes are still popular from the Georgian period and the characters breaking those laws. The big difference is that there is now a dedicated uniformed police force to bring them to justice.

I came up with a number of locations fir the board based on areas from my georgian version which wouldn't have changed and then cut out some locations such as gallows Hill and the sand mines as areas that no longer existed. I swapped in some more victorian relevant locations. The first railway station. Workhouse, lunatic asylum and public parks such as the arboretum. I was going to use this map from 1880 as reference but had a brain wave. All round the table for the big game. We had four teams playing four constables on a mission to solve as many crimes as possible while I ran around the table handing out cards and explaining the rules. All round the table for the big game. Some teams had more luck ir tactical know how than others but the joy of the game was seeing historical characters they knew about popping ip and getting up to odd crimes. One player found I'd used their image fir a couple of characters who just do happened to be committing sexualy deviant crimes such as bestiality. This time the cards fit the sections of the board. We had a number of funny moments such as policeman mounting a penny farthing to push to a crime only to slip in an open sewer while trying to apprehend a prostitute. Players kept avoiding the serious crimes hoping to get quantity over quality. This had murders being ignored in order to catch minor offenders. This time the cards fit the sections of the board. The smiling group lost but were happy for playing an escape card which meant the highest scoring criminal in their rivals pile went free robbing them of victory. Thanks to the other teams back stabbing thus was the winning group. Much fun was had by all. Its made me think about another game in the future where you play a criminal avoiding the law. Nor sure how that would work kaybexa Chang of this system where you go on criminal jobs and the most heists winThanks to the other teams back stabbing thus was the winning group.
