About the Project

I hadn’t planned to do a project for Terrainfest this year, as I didn’t really have any good ideas for a terrain project. However, as my Silver Bayonet project has progressed I do need to work on some terrain for it. So, even though it is a bit late to the party, in order to show a bit of support for the terrainfest I decided that I would create a mini project for my Silver Bayonet terrain.

Since the end of terrainfest has been extended I thought I would layout the terrain I have made (plus two hills) for the first four scenarios and get some pics.

I had actually managed to finish all that I had aimed for by the end of the original Terrainfest deadline.

Since then I have gone back to my main Silver Bayonet project, to continue the minis. However, I decided that I would try to do a few more clue markers for the game, for some variety.

I found some spare bits from the soldier sprues and the ghoul sprues, some bits of matchstick (for a wooden cross) and some milliput (for a crude book)

I initially had planned to put them onto clear bases, but when I tried it out I felt it didn’t really work. They looked ‘lost’ on them.

So I instead grabbed some round slotta bases, glued some paper over the slot, added sand and gravel and painted them up. Then I added the various bits I had been working on, some grass flock, and hurrah – some more basic clue markers were done 😊

If I get time, I will try to get this built……

A friend gifted me an mdf Windmill kit at Christmas. I thought it could be suitable for Silver Bayonet terrain perhaps, so this past week I set about the build.

I basically just followed the instructions and built it as shown, so here are some pictures of the process……

When it came to the Windmill sails there were an awful lot of sections to remove from the mdf – that was hard going.

As you can see from the pics I did not sand down all the edges. I did however sand down quite a few, in particular where pieces would join along that edge, or where tabs would insert. That was to ensure a flush fit.

It took a while, as I did not have a lot of free hobby time, but I did get it finished. I will look to get it painted up (probably in an off white) if I can.

After the build (sometimes…) comes the paint 😊

I did a little google research and found that a lot of the stone built windmills look to have been painted with a whitewash, so I decided I would go with something akin to that.

I started out by spraying the wall sections in a bone colour, followed by a spray from above with white. (It ended up similar to the bare mdf…)

I then gave the lower section of each floor a thinned brown wash.

Then I gave the ground floor a bit more weathering by applying a green/brown to the very bottom part of the walls.

The roof was left in the original grey. However, it looked it a bit dull, so I applied some tactical bird poop to the horizontal roof section. Later I also painted the join edges in grey to cover up the bare burnt bits.

For the sails I went with a brown spray, and a lighter brown for the support sections.

Painted up the door, window etc, and also added in some planks for the second floor to make that more usable. Then it was pretty much done.

Well, the end of Terrainfest is almost here, and I achieved more than I had planned for this terrain project.

I will have more Silver Bayonet terrain to make at a later date, but before then I have more player minis and enemies to paint, plus a Spring Clean project.

As such I will be marking this project as complete now.
