About the Project

The first white dwarf i eve read had a glorious battle report, pitching the Ultramarines against the Eldar. Ive recently come into possession of enough models that i can now build the ultramarine side and decided i'm going to own the army i so loved to read about as a kid.

So whilst not the exact same models compared to those in the battle report, i just couldn’t say no to some monopose goodness. There is just something nostalgic about painting something fairly simple and not chock full of detail.

I found an etsy seller in Oz who did banners and flags etc on sticky back paper so ordered a set to get that real old school feel to them.

I should really find the actual models used in the bat rep but for now this is the 10 tactical marines ready to defend the firebase against the Eldar.

Next up the biker patrol. Some ebay rescues in here, its really why i started the project as i realised i owned a few more space marine bikes than i thought and needed a reason to paint them up.

It was a nightmare getting the back packs onto these guys as the previous owner had already stuck them down but nothing a little sanding couldnt fix.

Really need to add some tufts to the bases to make them a little more interesting.

Worth noting i have left all the power swords as work in progress as i really want to try some blending on them, just need to find the time!

Edit: just watched the hobby hangout and yes Gerry they are on round bases lol Having a mix of rectangles and round hurts my brain.

Speeder

Next up is the speeder, in truth i’ve always been more of a fan of the flying shoebox version but that’s because of when i got into the hobby.

Had a blast painting this up though, nice bright colours and only three main colours to use made this easy to paint up.

Biggest discovery whilst doing this was pink base before painting yellow is an absolute game changer. Easy bright yellow was a major help in this project and also meant i finally had a use for the pink vallejo paint i had bought all those years ago on a whim.

I have a cadian army being painted up as and when that have white armour and grey fatigues which is why the base has the white helmet on. All my 40k stuff is based the same so i feel they are all fighting over the same planet.

I always struggled to get that ‘Eavy metal look to the ultramarine, i did a tester and it turned out way too light. So as anyone would do these days, i googled it.

Turns out there is an ‘Eavy metal archive with step by step guide on how to paint not only ultramarines but a load more chapters.

Link is below, have added some screenshots too just in case the website should cease for whatever reason.

Space Marines

This really helped get the “right” look in my mind for the marines and meant i could blitz through the armour stage now i knew what paints to use.

Assault Marines

The final models of the space marine force – The assault Marines.

As with the biker, still some bits to do like a few decals and the power swords but they are mostly finished.

Need to get back onto finalising them really as i have been a bit side tracked.

So i am prefacing this by saying i wasn’t going to do the imperial Firebase as i don’t generally have a lot of hobby space available and don’t really play much so terrain isn’t high on my list. However…

Ive found a photo copied imperial Firebase!

This weekend i am hoping to cut the copy out and stick to some card, 3d print some bulk heads and see what i end up with. This could be something exciting… or  a terrible mess.

Edit I need some 1mm card and I don’t have any! Order has been placed, next week shall be for sticking and crafting when it arrives.

The Imperial Firebase - Construction

As ive been asked i thought actually adding the info into the project could be a good idea so people can build along if they want.

The bulkheads are 3d prints, got them off cults here:
https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/old-school-bulkheads

The Bastion & Firebase (plus all of the old Necromunda terrain) can be found here. You will need to sign up before you can download.

Hope that helps people

Just be careful of scaling the photocopies, you may need to add in some extra strips here and there to make them fit better but its not hard to do.
