Shatterpoint Part One
They like to say that two things in life are inevitable:
- in May hobby shops will put Star Wars models on discount
- I will buy some even though I haven’t painted up the stuff I bought last year. Or the year before.
Well no more!
I mean, I’ve already bought this year’s models. Let’s not get too crazy.
But by next year, there won’t be a back log.
The timing is perfect as the FLGS I mentioned last post came back into the market with a good deal on Shatterpoint in particular. Pulling my box of unbuilt models out of my kennel so I didn’t accidentally order a repeat, I was reminded that I have, including the core set, eleven squads for this game already. Not that it stopped me picking up another three but it did stop me picking up six 😂 I think that should count as personal growth.
These AMG miniatures are excellent to put together. There is a QR code to get the instructions but there’s no need for them. They bond with plastic glue and only go together one way so it is a breeze to put them together. There’s also very little clean up needed.
The only thing I’m not a fan of is the bases – I really would prefer they kept them plain and you added your own texture. However, they fit a 2mm magnet nicely underneath and other than waiting for the glue to dry, each squad takes about 15 minutes to put together. I spent a few hours over a weekend putting models together and getting them primed.
Normally I don’t play with unpainted models but as there is a bit of a wave of enthusiasm locally right now for the game, I’m willing to make an exception. I don’t want that to get me out of painting them though.
Echoes of Private Projects Past
A couple of years ago I started a private project for a game that didn’t happen. The plan was for a full day game for a big birthday celebration but none of it came together in the end. It wouldn’t make sense to go back to that project at this point because it ended up a hot mess hence this project log.
My plan back then was to use the West End Games Star Wars game or Xenos Rampant but that’s because it was a game day where I had total control. If I want to actually get regular use out of these toy soldiers, I have to concede defeat and play officially licensed games (at least until I can infiltrate the local community and sow seeds of change). One of our local game shops has decided to get back into wargames after dropping them last year. Amongst the games they are going to stock, not one but both the current Star Wars games; Legion and Shatterpoint.
As I own a significant amount of both of those games, this seems like a good time to start chipping away at the backlog.
