Dark Conspiracy – The Miniatures Game

About the Project
I have loved the Dark Conspiracy rpg since it's initial release by GDW and many years ago I bought some Hasslefree figures to create a miniature skirmish/adventure game to recreate this world. I started painting the figures, but as with many projects it got put to one side and sat gathering dust. During this years Spring Clean Challenge I decided to resurrect this project and I have been adding to since then. In this project I will continue to record the additional models built and painted as well as record the development of my game.

The Mystery Machine V The Rebased
This is the final selection of models that I finished during the Spring Clean Challenge.
The van I have had painted up all bar the stowage for over 10 years, finally it is completed.
The other models were all fully painted for other projects, i just needed to re base them to match in with the other Dark Conspiracy bases.
A post apocolyptic Mystery Machine. The body work was painted in the following way: I started from a black undercoat and drybrushed the following layers to create a rusty metal base, Rhinox hide followed by lighter drybrushes of Mournfang Brown, Orange and finally a very light dry brushed of a gunmetal colour. I then stipled on the base paintwork colours, tidying up with a paintbrush at the end. All other base colours were then painted prior to giving the whole model a wash of Agrax Earthshade. I then built up the paintwork with a combination of stipling and a fine paint brush in progressively lighter shades of the base colour.
A selection of monster/encounter models that I had finished for other projects. Two Hounds of Tindaloos from Modiphious, Psychic Overlord from Hasslefree with sculpted hood, Tentacled Cultist (sadly from a company that obly seemed to be around for a few months, they produced a lovely range of modern horror miniatures the company was called Something Wicked)Ok that is now everything I produced for the Spring Cleam Challenge this year.
The next posts will be all new models.
Monsters and Aliens
Thank you for the Golden Button I was hoping to have added more before now, but I have been on holiday and otherwise distracted.
In this entry I hope to cover most of the other models I completed for the Spring Clean Challenge and then I can start to share new stuff that I have been working on.
These models are primarily for encounters though the Grey Aliens may become a faction in their own right.
The Grey Aliens, all from Lucid Eye, lovely models. Once I painted them in the purplish grey I noticed they kind of blend a bit into the baseboard so I am thinking of incorporating that into their rules, maybe giving them some sort of camouflage in urban environments?
Large Monsters L to R: Flesh Gollum, from Mantic Games, Cthuloid demon from C'mon "The Others" Board game, he has been painted for many years, using slapchop before it became a thing! So I just had to rebase him.
Some zombie types from Hasslefree Miniatures, these will be added two shortly to create a hoard, and a Werewolf from Lion Tower Miniatures, the green model I have now finished so I will cover him in a latter post.
Shadow Demons 3d prints from Etsy. I have now added two more of the creeping demons so that when summoned to the table all three are placed on the board at different locations with only one of them being the actual demon, being shadow demons if they start and end their movement adjacent to terrain they cannot be targeted/spotted over a certain distance. They have two attack modes each represented by one of the other models, a ranged scream attack, and a close combat attack, once i have finished the core rules I will be able to create their special rules to represent this.Corporate Operatives
These Elite squads are better trained and equipped but generally outnumbered by the Minion Hunters (will know more once playtesting starts).
L to R, Gun-kata, medic/technician and heavy gunner both are old Sedition War miniatures from McVey Studios, sadly now out of production, and two melee specialists.
L to R, Twin machine pistols, Leader/Coms, Dog handler, Cyberhound, I think this last model was from Heresy Miniatures but I am not sure, as I said I have had most of these models for over 10 years.
Close ups as I was very happy with the retro Nokia phone and the painting on the Doberman cyber hound. The Humvee in the background is from Imprint Models, I now believe produced by Empress Miniatures.
Minion Hunters
Currently I have two Core Faction types that players can use, Minion Hunters and Corporate Operators, overtime i hope to add other factions that can be used either as player factions or possible encounters, these will include; Police/SWAT, Media Crew FBI/Government agents, Cultists, Aliens, Outlanders/Hillbillies.
I will start with the Minion Hunters.
I based these two characters on the two main characters on the cover image shown on the header for this project.
L to R, Pilot, Punk ( teenage girl who is slightly deranged and has started to dress as her favourite comic book character from before the world went to shit) Psychic, Sponsor. Both the Pilot and Sponsor are going to be used as objectives for specific scenarios i have designed.
I was really pleased with the use of this decal on the pilots jacket, required liberal use of Micro Set and Micro Sol.The car in the background of these photos is a repainted Disney “Cars” diecast, and the bus is from Siku ( still requires disassembly and re painting this will be the subject of a future tutorial post).
Introduction to the World of Dark Conspiracy
The world of Dark Conspiracy
Taken from the core rule book:
“Imagine an Earth where chaos reigns an Earth of the very near future. Runaway population growth, diminishing resources and human greed have all taken their toll on the planet. Megacorporations have slipped the reigns of national regulation and mpw they wage a vontinual evonomic war on political governments. A global economic collapse had plunged all but the most privileged into poverty.
The superpowers have collapsed from inertia and economic stress. In some places those federal republics still exist in name, but their individual states have stepped forward to fill the vacuum of power, and where those states fall short, local governments take up the slack. The result is political crazy quilt of bizarre and contradictory laws and practices. What is custom in one locale may well get you shot in another.
But economic and political chaos are only the symptoms of the disease. Its cause lies in the roots of humanity’s deepest, darkest nightmares. Somehow, an ancient, unspeakable evil has been unleashed on the Earth, an evil which thrives on the anguish of a billion tortured souls. This malevolent power now twists the minds of men and women, using their bade instincts to serve its purposes. Parts of the world have fallen completely under its control, and from them merge Dark Minions, creatures of another time and space that feed not only on human flesh, but also on human spirit.
But there are still people fighting to drive back the Darkness. Sometimes their the agents of organisations that some small residue of their former power and independence. Sometimes they’re members of what remains of the free press. Most often they’re just victims who’ve escaped the horror and are now fighting back.”
The official background includes various Aliens and alien technology alongside traditional horror staples such as vampires, werewolves, zombies etc. as well as some more unique creatures.
I am using this background as a starting point but adding other influences that inspire me such as Lovecraft, X-files, Delta Green and any other cool miniatures I find.
I plan to maintain the retro futuristic vibes of the original game.
Concepts and Goals for the Game
I have some initial ideas and elements I want to achieve with this game, which I will share here as it will be interesting to see how these develop and change as things progress.
- Initiative to be random with each figure to be activated by drawing cards or tokens, some card/tokens will activate events.
- Each cell/faction to consist of 5-10 models.
- Event Deck which may affect conditions or reveal/ activate monsters.
- Strong campaign play which allow for development of your cell/faction and base of operations.
- All models to have stats and special rules on a card, with the reverse of card having specific AI for that model allowing for solo play and easy activation of creatures.
- Set of core scenarios, with campaign packs that provide additional scenarios to be dropped in to tell that specific story.
In the next few posts I will start to show you some of the models I painted during the Spring Clean Challenge starting off with some of the factions.
