About the Project

Returning to my Khaz Modan 10mm dwarf army that I painted up to help me through depression a few years ago. I'm not in as bad a place this time round but still find 10mm works best for times of the old brain wibbles.

The rest of the Black Dogs are based on 40mmx40mm snow bases but these are going to be something more green. Basing 10mm models has been more time consuming that painting them for me in the past but I’m trying something new this time.

The bases themselves are the Wargames Atlantic 40mmx20mm plastic bases which come with the dwarves (and are available separately). They come with holes for small magnets so those go in before anything else.

  1. Prime bases with whatever paint is lying around
  2. Glue down the back row
  3. Using AK’s Dark Earth texture paste, fill the area between the back row and the back of the base. Also put down the paste that will sit between the two rows
  4. Glue down the front row and repeat filling with the texture paste
  5. Flock used is a green blend foam scatter flock from Geek Gaming Scenics that has been in the cupboard for several years at this point.
  6. Rim the bases with Vallejo US Field Drab

Although they’ll never be on the table at the same time, I very much see this is box as an extension of the original Black Dogs of Khaz Modan the paint scheme matches that as best I can.

  1. Prime grey
  2. Paint most of the model with Army Painter Gun Metal
  3. Hands get Citadel Kislev Flesh (the faces don’t show up at this scale once you do the wash over the helmet)
  4. Boots and belts got Vallejo Chocolate Brown (the puddle bases are also painted with this)
  5. Shields, shirt cuffs and the tiny slip of material sticking out the bottom of the chainmail were Citadel Mephiston Red
  6. The beards; just grabbed a bunch of hair colours
  7. Some black on the shields just to mask a little the stretching on the sculpts
  8. All over wash with Citadel Agrax Earthshade
  9. Shield bosses get a dot of Citadel Retributor Gold

That’s it. Basing will get its own post. Bad photo time? Bad photo time.

Back in 2021 I started up a project under my old BoW handle about painting small miniatures to help with my depression. Up until that time I’d never painted anything smaller than 28mm before and it was a revelation to me just how much I enjoyed the 10mm scale. Since I’ve picked up several different projects in smaller scales (6, 8, 10 and 15 are all in the collection) but I’ve always had a soft spot for my dwarves.

The original models came from Pendraken’s Hill Dwarf line and later I added in models from Kallistra. At some point (probably to be found in another project but I’m not going back through all my posts to figure it out) I not only finished the army, I rebased it onto 40mmx40mm for Fantastic Battles. They have sat in my glass cabinet ever since.

Introduction

However, after a rough year at work I had a real brain blip that has been affecting painting for the last few months. I’ve still been getting things done but it has been all over the place and not good at finishing things.

This past week I had to return to work and go to an all weekend wedding. Let me tell you, as a double bill of stressors, it was a lot. I knew it was going to be overwhelming so I planned to pack a hobby station to escape to.

Introduction

The obvious choice? Some of the new Wargames Atlantic 10mm dwarves. Here we go again…
