About the Project

I wanted to use my Epic scale miniatures from Warlord games to make a 3D version of this Richard Borg game. I had previously made a bigger version of The Perry`s Travel Battle game and really enjoyed the project. I will show a few images of that project as a prelude. The Epic miniatures lend themselves to being used as compact playing pieces. I had begun to reduce the base sizes to 40mm wide for the DBN Napoleonic game. I have a small table, so a reduced size game suits me very well. I also like the idea of any game that uses a grid. The Travel Battle squares had to be replaced with the hexes of Commands and Colours. I also had the opportunity recently to play a huge Memoir 44 D Day game using those massive pre printed maps. 5 a side! This was my first time playing this game and I was intrigued by the different scales being used in the same game e.g. tanks and infantry. For the first time I realized that the buildings and villages did not have to be in scale with the miniatures. The most important design decision was that the units could fit into the villages, woods etc.Because the infantry units were 40mm x 40mm then the hexes needed to be big enough to fit trees and houses around the edges. This terrain had to be functional, first and foremost. so I decided on hexes that were 80mm wide. I have played a good few games on my board and it works. It is very easy to set up and all the terrain fits in one storage box.

Here are some pictures of my earlier bigger Travel Battle Boards, again with epic scale Napoleonics. These are the 80mm wide hexes for Commands and Colours. I was being extra careful in making sure that the units would fit in among the trees and buildings.
