AvP Gets Crushed by the Latest Stretch Goal
November 17, 2013 by dracs
The Aliens vs Predators Miniatures Game has seen a phenomenal level of success on Kickstarter, so much so that their next stretch goal aims at creating something pretty big; a giant Xenomorph Crusher!
The Alien Crusher is a massive monster, charging in with its heavily armoured crest with enough force to damage even armoured vehicles (an intriguing idea as it opens up the possibility of vehicles in the game).
The miniature itself will stand on a 50mm base, bigger even than the Royal Guard models, making it the largest miniature made for the game so far.
If you want to see this monster crushing Predators and Marines alike head over to Kickstarter and help to reach that stretch goal.

The Queen is said to be comming on a 120mil base! Yep, Prodos and Mark have said that much. Yikes, gotta gets me one a those for sure.
I love the whole Aliens/Predator franchise. But this Kickstarter just screams rushed/half arsed/over priced.
What makes you say that? I get no such feeling from it.
I meant rushed and half arsed. overpriced is in the eye of the beholder.
All the silly little errors and mistakes they were making at the beginning. It just felt as if they weren’t fully ready to launch the Kickstarter. Which if what i’ve read is right, then they weren’t, but had to start it anyway due to promises made during licensing.
hmmm. I don’t get that impression. I have certainly seen better run KS but have seen a whole heap of worse run ones. and i’m not sure it is actually that over priced considering what they are. plus there is still 11 days to go for it to get better value.
When it first hit KS I would have sided with you regarding the price for the game, now…. ARE YOU CRAZY? It’s an awesome deal for models, especially how they have just given a lot of people an extra £25 to spend on add-ons + 2 free add-ons of your choice + face huggers….. 😀 The only thing I hear screaming atm is my girlfriend “something, something, bank account, red side. 😛 hehe
Then they aren’t doing a great job explaining it. Your post seems at odds with the grid they have summarising the pledges.. At the moment if you pledge the base game, you get one beserker, one model of your choice, one “add on” which is at the most a couple of aliens, and some face huggers.
TBH there are other boxed sets I’d rather get for 75 pounds, and other kickstarters with better discounts. I work for a company that deals with manufacturers. Volume discount on 180k is going to be massive compared to 30 or even 100k. Once you hitthe magical MOQ of 1000, things start opening up. The price to land my copy in Australia is an extra 10 pounds, even if I spend 300 pounds? They aren’t terribly specific about whether it’s going to be a longer term game with support, or how long their licensing is for. With no mention of plastics, I’m not terribly optimistic of longterm support. I’ll keep watching, but warzone had better bundled value imho.
If you read the opening paragraph of the KS page:
“In late 2014 there will be a large scale produced version which will include 1 or 2 piece plastic versions of each model and will be independent of KS.”
So yes there are plans for plastics later on, and I would guess this will tie in with the release of the wargame side of the project.
No, these plastics are for the boardgame. You think they’d release 1 or 2!component plastics for a wargame? With the money they’ve raised they could do plastic for the wargame if they intended longterm support.
I’d suggest you go watch the Q&A video on the KS page 🙂
For the price, you have to consider that this is a deluxe kickstarter exclusive boardgame version, containing 31 to 35 RESIN models. They will release the boardgame with plastic miniatures in late 2014, but the sculpts will probably be differents for the base set models. Models are multipose for the most part, so it won’t be 3 exactly the same on the table.
The only thing that seems less planed is the sculpts for the stretch goals. But I can see having to work with the movie studio that needs to approve any image you release doing that. They said it takes about 5 days to get the approval or not from the studio. For instance, one of the first predalien sculpt was considered to fat, so in all that’s at least 10 days waiting for approval.
The minis look great. At the add-on prices, a £75 boxed game has £140+ of content (I don’t know what price for the tokens, cards, rules). And this is BEFORE you get into the free add-ons, and exclusives – Berserker, £10 add-on and £15 add-on, and since £185K has just been passed, the top two pledge levels get another £15 of add-ons.
Waiting on gameplay video, some rules outlined, images of castings other than the painted versions already seen.
For a small company, Prodos are doing a bloody good job.
I like the look of it, and I love the franchise, but I don’t really see it getting to be any more than a board game. That’s why I’m only getting the starter set and some addons such as dice. If I increase my pledge any more than that I’m just getting duplicates, which is why was confused when the stretch goals started turning into extra addon credit.
To talk about the boxed game having £140 worth of contents is a bit spurious – those values have been assigned by the folks running the kickstarter. There aren’t products on sale at those prices in ‘shops’ – and I am not convinced there could be. £30 for the crusher model demonstrates, in my opinion, just how over-priced these minis are. When GW charge that for a model on a 50 mm base, the internet seethes with nerd-rage. That would be a product that is immediately available. With KS there is always a sizeable weight.
I would much rather have positive things to say about this project. I was convinced I would invest in it. But it has been disappointing. Compared with Shadows of Brimstone or Myth, for instance, the Aliens vs Predator game (which should have been a shoe-in for a million dollars worth of interest) has limped along. Seriously, could do better.
+1
I don’t value the contents at the 85 pounds I’d have to pay to get it.
Even then, it’s a kickstarter, not a shop purchase. If the quality isn’t great, I have no legal recourse as I would for a normal purchase. To counteract the “risk” of kickstarter, you need to offer good quality. Look at the price on the sentry guns, I’m frankly amazed. I thought for sure, I would be buying an AVP based miniatures/board game. Myth is a perfect example, or how much value you can offer by setting your aim a bit higher, and aiming for plastic moulds and ongoing support. I imagine though, that prodos has only a couple of years of licensing 🙁
I will never support a game based on a movie franchise as it will never be supported beyond the first release, unless it goes super nova in sales. If we all look back you might recall a minis game based around Starship Trooper and they only had a few years of licence and it had no choice and come to a halt. This game will be no different unfortunately.
I don’t think SST’s demise had anything to do with license issues. Mongoose were actively developing a completely new faction for it when It crashed.
IMHO, it was the failed move to pre-painted minis that killed SST and nearly all the rest of Mongoose’s miniature game lines. Some of them resurfaced later, SST did not — there license issues probably played a part.
As for AvP… It doesn’t look like a really good deal and I don’t have the cash to spare anyways after splurging on Mars Attacks…
Just put my Get to the Chopper pledge in.
My friend put her Get to the Chopper pledge in.
Then we put a joint Stronghold x2 pledge in for Battle Systems.
🙂
@manpug -Starship Troopers was great though, wasn’t it?! I still have all the minis in the garage 🙂
Yes the models where nice.
Would love to invest, but still not got my Warzone yet 🙁
WERE ON AN EXPRESS KICKSTARTER TO HELL! GOING DOWN! AWOOOOOOOO!
@willy2fly,
You’re not Wrong, Wrong, Wrong, Wrong, Wrong. 😛
it is a shame to see such an amazing license not being used to its full potential. The art is inexistant, the card board… well, I dont think they hit the target. the minis will be the only thing that makes that KS worth.
What a waist.
AvP could have been such a buzz.
I am baking the KS for its mini, because I love the franchise, but I could have spent hundreds, I will only spend a little.
All the people shouting “nay” should give this project a second look. They are listening now. I think a big reason this one has “limped” a long was they tried more of a teaser campaign then a here’s everything up front campaign like other kickstarters.
They did an Q&A earlier today and posted it in the kickstarter. It cleared up a lot of things and showed they have a lot going on for this game (in my opinion). I think it also showed that they weren’t unprepared as we think. I think a lot of it has to do with the license as every action they have done for this Kickstarter has to be approved and that can be an annoying process which has caused delays. The other kickstarters mentioned here that have been more “successful” (I use quotes because the AVP kickstarter just crossed the halfway mark) because they have had more freedom. The other kickstarters I have followed I haven’t heard to much about needing approval for everything they do.
Lastly as they mentioned in the Q&A this is kinda like a gift to us. Everyone wants more for their dollar (I agree). Higher quality is more. The pictures out there (Yes I wish there were more too) show a higher quality miniature then what you see from the likes of Forgeworld or quite a few other studios for a fraction of the cost. I mean 5 marines are 15 pounds. 5 forgeworld space marines are double that and you gotta buy the guns still. Not to mention the space marines don’t hold a flame to the quality of the figures. Warmachine your paying pennies more but once again the quality out strips the resin/plastic 10 man boxes warmachine is producing. And most other companies in my experience are charging more then 3 pounds for 28mm infantry at the same quality. I highly recommend checking out the Q&A posted on the front of their Kickstarter. They talk about the quality of the material and even show how you can bend it without breaking it.
I guess my closing statement is this: Us fine Wargamers ussually have to much to paint as is. I mean I have armies and armies of various games that I need to get too. The great thing about this game is it is set up as a 2-3 squad size which means you need a minimum of figures whether for the board game or wargame. I have been turning over a new leaf lately and saying less is more. I would rather have 20-30 soldiers of high quality sculpt (detail/pose etc) and material then 10 times that number in lower quality sculpts and material.
Sorry for the rant. It just confusing me how people are calling this one done and game over (thats the tone of the messages and posts in a few places) when it has only just crossed the half way point as of today. Oh and lastly they posted all the stretch goals today! So sweet! Start pledging! I needs me a queen! 🙂
Happy gaming folks.
Oh and one thing I forgot in my rant above. Warzone was their first project. The delays and what not they have said were from lack of experience and having to produce 250+ sculpts for that project. They have said they are almost done shipping everything for Warzone on the AVP kickstarter and a few backers have even received there mini’s. The great thing about AVP is it’ll be a fraction of the sculpts at launch and they already have a lot done for it (as seen in the Q&A).
I love the Aliens IP, saw this and wept with joy. Then noticed no gameplay video… then a promise of one… Then still no video… The bottom line is this is a game, I want to see the game (rough prototype, cardboard counters whatever) before purchasing. Simple as. No money from me until I see the game rather than a collection of expensive minis and bits of cardboard (which are a huge miss as well IMO incidentally). If they have no rules, then this is half arsed. If they do, but are ashamed of them, then that’s a huge worry. If they do, but can’t be arsed to do a video, then that’s a bad attitude. NO amount of stretch goals will bring me into this, as much as I want to, without a gameplay vid. Same for Shadows of Brimstone (which looks more of a mess IMO!)
They actually have a reason for no game play video (There should be one up this week. Worst case there will be fan ones this weekend as they are doing an open demo game at a local store in there hometown) and that is because the one they did FOX said no to it and redo it. They have been having some license issues as I mentioned in my above rant. The game is almost an exact copy of the WARZONE rule set that they have already made. They are using all the core mechanics from that system because that is their system they have developed based of RTS video games. The Q&A answers a lot of game play questions but I recommend keeping an eye out this weekend as a lot will come up in the final stretch 🙂
To be fair, Kickstarer at least originally is for the public to invest and donate money to a project they believe in NOT to pre-order stuff.
I didn’t mind the somewhat high prices of Warzone because F*ck You GW, That’s Why, and from what I’ve seen the models are pretty beautiful. I *do* think the high price of this Boxed Game is due to the high quality of the miniatures (resin).
I look forward to it I just bought into it after I saw the Q&A video. I think this game will be pretty good and yes the Kickstarter is to Kickstart the game not a preorder gimmick. and they said the boards are made just like the space hulk ones.
the Q&A was a great one, lots of explanations about their targets for he game. I was very pleased with it.
But I still believe that they were not ready when the KS started. but… I trust they will come back stronger after watching the video.
…. still backing you guys ^^
@poosh, the mini’s aren’t resin, they’re Urathene. Similar to resin, but more bendy, and apparently more expensive and detailed, though I question this, they look as good as FW resin at best, certainly no better, but one would hope with better quality control! Also FU GW … freakin aye..
@ultrasmerf, I guess that’s fair. Creates a worry for the system if Fox are being that anal that they don’t trust Prodos to run with it, Point still stands though, no gameplay, no money. Can you point me to a “Warzone Academy” type video or something?
As I said, I want to like it, I really do, but it IS expensive (maybe not for what you get but still expensive all the same). I also want it to finish a day later (you know, on a payday).
I don’t quite get why this is not rocketing like Brimstone is (for those who don’t mind the lack of rules), the IP is epic and the SG’s seem better organised than the “throw everything at everyone” approach with Brimstone.
I got a bit of the same worry about Fox. I think it mostly impacts this project because its a tight timeframe (20 days of funding) so a lot of people are in a rush to get as much info as they can. And the whole thing with Fox its not a necessarily a trust issue its a license issue and the license everything has to be approved before the public see it. It is no different for movies or anuthing else in this age of trying to keep things a secret or only releasing it when it is deemed ready. And unfortunately kickstarter doesn’t work like that and the expectation is to see the raw work we normally dont get to see except in a special edition 25years from now lol.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYZ8rqdq70s&feature=youtube_gdata_player just had a quick look on youtube for this. 99% its the Prodos boys playing it. Havent had a chance to fully watch it and it is beta rules.
And on a final note I will be the first to admit fanboyism on this project. So my perspective is abit in there favour there lol. And I totally understand the payday thing. I am basically selling my liver on this one lol
The final couple of hours of Kickstarter madness… backer numbers and pledge totals changing faster than sentry-gun ammo counters…
