The Dropzone Commander Website IS LIVE!
June 8, 2012 by brennon
Dropzone Commander is probably one of, if not the main, hot topics with us right now. The game from Hawk Wargames comes with so many amazing miniatures it has us squealing like little school girls. So without further ado, the Dropzone Commander web site is LIVE RIGHT NOW.
Also check out some of these amazing images.
Post-Human Republic
The Post-Human Republic are probably the faction that I personally am very much behind. It might be because they have something called the 'Odin Heavy Walker' but the mix of sleek designs and heavy weaponry makes them astounding to the eye. They have an amazing look when they're all together as you can see in the collective images above.
United Colonies of Mankind
The United Colonies of Mankind are certainly a more rough and ready force. The vehicles smack of practicality and seem as if they have gone through rigorous battlefield testing. With Alien and Cyborg forces bearing down on them from all sides you would hope this is the case. Driving through the shattered remains of humanity these guys seem like they have paid a heavy price.
Shaltari Tribes
Now this is a faction with an interesting twist. The first thing to springs to mind when I see them is "Oh My God its the Halo Covenant!" and you can forgive me for that when you spy their Jaguar Walkers and Angular designs. While not my favourite I think that this could be the Alien race I would spring for in the far future of 10mm Sci-Fi battle.
The Scourge
An interesting faction to be sure. The Scourge have that bug like appearance of an Alien race hell bent on extermination. The chitinous style plating on their vehicles and that eerie purple paint scheme mark these guys out as someone to avoid.
On top of the wonderful images you see above there is the Modular Terrain. Each building comes in separate blocks so you can build them up as high or indeed as wide as you wish. As well as giving a sense of scale to the miniatures themselves it means no board need ever be the same. Fancy fighting in the middle of a city? Build the structures to high rise level. Fancy going out into the suburbs for a bit of open warfare? Then lower it down and spread it out.
Also, if you fancy checking out some of the models in various stages of painting before you choose some yourselves check out the new Progress Log (Plog) on our forums right here: Dropzone Commander Painting Plog.
Which faction will you ally with when the time comes?

United Colonies of Mankind. I love everything about them. I’ll probably love the back story too!!
Live tonight if only
Yeah, must be problems
That is some real cool ideas for the buildings they did for the infestation.
Those pics still make me drool, utterly amazing. Can’t wait to pre-order my scourge force!
Major disappointment. Not even after a week of fixing the site can they fix it. 2 dates given, 2 dates missed. Poor planning really
Well they went into final bug fixing tonight so my hoping is at this late hour, now I’m back from the pub I can enjoy some models…soon…ish…maybe… 😉
BoW Ben
As I would not have a clue of how to fix their problem I’ll refrain from passing comment apart from as they say “The best things in life are worth waiting for”.
The website has gone live now. Go check it out 🙂

the prices are intresting without a look at the rules…
I would much rather pay these prices for what they’re promising than for what I currently pay for 40k.
That being said, I know money doesn’t grow on trees, but I’m excited to spend some cash on this new line…I hope the rules and future releases are great and that the game remains a favorite among the miniature world to give us decades of miniature gaming!
I would also love to see what this company could to with the fantasy genre!
Huge dragons, blocks of troops, war machines, full scale castles, dwarven air ships…
ok…getting ahead of myself..breath.
£12 for 30 10mm figures! They’re taking the piss. I can get 30 from Pendraken for £4.80. Ok maybe the sculpts arn’t quite as good but at 10mm who can make out the detail when they’re on the table. Heck I can even buy good 15mm figures from Rebel minis or Critical Mass games and still save money.
Its difficult looking at it without rules, but the whole pricing structure pushes you towards the dropships and tanks, I’d take a guess that actual ground troops wandering around wont be the mainstay of your army, you will likely have very few, and the bigger stuff is very reasonably priced – and better sculpted than pretty much everything else out there.
Even the larger army deals dont really have many troops in them, one or two bases more than the smallest army deal.
For what its worth, I went for the post human basic army deal, I like the aesthetic of that army the most, although not the colourscheme they have chosen, but the army deals seem the best value currently.
As an aside for anyone looking to get into this and waiting for the scenery, go to a model railway site, look for the card buildings in ‘n’ scale , they do houses and allsorts, not quite in the modern style of the stuff in the pictures, but very cheap and good enough to get started.
prices for the infantry are a bit steep the tanks are slightly more expensive than historical but i was expecting the dropships to be a lot more expensive than they are
i think i have found my new wargame of choice if the rules are decent. the prices still better than most plus larger scale than most wargames too and they have fantastic minis what more could a wargamer want.
It is great to have a glimpse at army composition/size and some background, but I was really hoping they would have some starter rules up for download.
I can spend all day on that website 🙂
Without getting into price relativity, so far it’s a NOPE. 68 pounds for 4 roughly 28mm-human sized mechs, 2 matchbox cars, 4 bases of tiny dudes and 2 jetbike-sized flyers, no matter how nice they look, is pushing my “not getting your money’s worth” button. And everything on the site points towards no free rules PDF which is a major boo-boo these days too…
Loving the united colonies. Remind me of aliens the colonial marines
Goodness, Dropzone Commander is just about the most expensive 10mm range I’ve ever seen! Those starter army boxed sets end up costing over $100 US. I think it might even be cheaper to buy a starter Warmaster army direct from Games Workshop. I was semi-curious about DzC to begin with–now its a definite pass.
now that i have gotten over shiny syndrome its actually kind of sad that the price is what kills it. in my earlier comment it was still shiny and i thought the price was in us dollars. i would buy it if it had free rules and a cheaper price
I like many people were wowed by the minis and couldnt wait to see what the site offered and check out the preorders, i spent most of the time looking at the shiney pictures. then checked the prices and left the site after 5 mins.. no free pdf rules to atleast get a taste of the core aspects of the game.. and £68 quid for just one! small starter army.. hmm id sooner (never thought id say it) spend £68 and buy the island of blood WHFB box, or invest in the Warmachine starter box. if i want to get into a new game from scratch i want 2 starter armies and rules all in one box for less than £100… sorry to sound like a moaning old git but.. id sooner put money into the mantic kickstarter.. money well invested and spent 🙂
You can’t even play a decent game with a WHFB island of blood box. And the two games are totally different. The prices aren’t that out of line with Flames of War.
Althought it would had been great if they some kind of quick start rules I am happy that least we got some background to factions so that we get some image about game’s universe.
Great looking game. Amazing concepts with the scenery. Its a shame that the prices are ridiculous, although once everyone gets an idea of how much you need to play a fulfilling game, opinions may change. The rulebooks price isn’t terrible IMO. I’d pick that up just for the read.
I was hoping that at 10mm the price would be so good that rules would be almost a moot point. However, they are MUCH steeper then expected. Still not out of range but I am very hesitant to blindly preorder now. For me it will depend completely on how good the rules are.
So far the turn structure has been my favorite rule. I like the direction of the Commander cards and at 40 cards per faction, even with overlap, it could really spice things up on the table. The variable range bit sounds interesting too but I want to see how that will be implemented before I make my mind up. No CC locking makes me very, VERY happy.
I agree with most people here. While I still love the minis and the rules so far promise to be quite interesting, these prices are way too steep. I will probably still order something at a later date just because I love those minis so much, but for now I think I will give it a pass. And for those people who say that you have to look at it relatively: for the price or less than the price of a small starter (which looking at the model sizes is basically a handfull of tiny models) you could get a Warmachine 2-player battle box, Island of Blood, or two (even three in some cases) Dystopian Wars/Firestorm Armada/Uncharted Seas fleets! So yeah, even relatively speaking the prices are way too high… It’s probably something to do with the initial 3D print needing to be of a very high resolution to make it work in such a small scale, as well as needing a very good resin to hold all the tiny details, but I was still hoping for more in the region of 30-35 quid for the small starters 🙁
Ah who am I kidding, I will probably buy some when my new paycheck gets here lol
If they don’t want this game (which looks very appealing!) to be DOA, they need to rethink their pricing. They are trying to break into a crowded and very competitive market and need to reduce the cost of entry to build up a critical mass of new players.
It looks to me like the company pinned all its hopes on the images selling the game and went all out to appeal to gamers ‘shiney’ nature. So far I would say it has worked to a degree. However the prices for what are very small models are pitched at the level that when the initial rush is done with it will become a flash in the pan game. One commentor here made reference to Flames of War as a comparison. A game that I personally find very expensive for what it is and deliberatly made at 15mm where nothing mainstream can be used alternatively. When a section of the community is already up in arms over the price increases being added by the sector leader GW I can only think they are looking for a ‘swift killing’.
It looks nice guys but at that price I can get more action for my pennies elsewhere. Sorry.
>and deliberatly made at 15mm where nothing mainstream can be used alternatively.
…how to spot a GW-only player in one easy step.
>and deliberatly made at 15mm where nothing mainstream can be used alternatively
Yeah, you’ve got this totally back to front. For a very very long time, the two main wargaming scales were 15mm and 25mm, with various smaller scales (2mm, 6mm and 10mm) having niche markets too. Games Workshop’s 28mm was a deliberate attempt to ensure you couldn’t make use of the 25mm figures that already existed on the market.
Even without that, if you really think that Battlefront are the only people doing 15mm WW2 miniatures, you really aren’t looking hard enough.
I’m pretty sure Darrel himself has done unboxings of affordable plastic WWII 15mm stuff….
at the risk of kicking men while there down
Loads of 15mm around for Sci Fi and WW2 these days, huge amounts for Ancients and a decent amount of Fantasy too. As such terrain and alt figures all over the shop. In particular I can think of several 15mm ww2 companies…PSC, Peter Pig, Zvezda etc. In fact Im thinking of going 15mm only for almost all games with a few 28mm skirmish games
With regard to this game I heard it was 10mm…is that correct? Also looks good but seems a bit expensive in these times of low cash and many games
The figures are a little steep, but I’m still willing to give it a go
I was all for this game until I saw the prices. £68 for so little, According to some the standard game size will be the £140 sets and without free rules, or even rules coming with the army sets its just not worth it. Models lovely, price shocking.
I imagine they have not had as many pre orders as they thought they may get
I don’t know about the pre-orders.
This is the only site where I read any negative reactions.
And even a few of those people complaining about the prices state that they will buy some eventually.
>This is the only site where I read any negative reactions.
Wow, so you don’t read Dakka or Warseer at all?
I dunno, I guess it is pricey but the level of detail is off the hook, yo.
…sorry, I won’t write like that again.
I love the miniatures but the rules will make or break it for me. Unfortunately I’m not going to be holding my breath about it since they play tested the rules for less than 2 months and only in house. I can’t remember any tabletop game with such a short time span like that which turned up having “decent” rules.
They really should release some quick start rules if they want people to invest.
With the amount of hype shown by the likes of the guys here at BoW I guess they thought they could inch their prices up?
As it is, prices are a total turn off. Nice minis but it’s a no from me.
I was hoping for some super awesome rules and minis Im wondering if a lot of comments (including my earlier one?) are a little down right now cos we all saw 10mm and thought…CHEAP!! Instead we have what many feel are a bit pricey to just order untested etc
Perspective on various other deals out there:
new Hordes 2 player set= $99.99 (60 ish??) rrp, Bushido starter=£28, Warmaster Ancients army 1000pts in 15mm=£85, GZG Full thrust mega fleet deal=£60, GZG 15mmm NAC troopers blister of 6 power armour figs=£3, EM4 50x 28mm Fantasy plastic Dwarves=£7.70
Just looking at the ares type 1 walker for PHR they are 31mm tall, to the guns, that is 1.2 IN. Just shy of a Firewarrior. At $16 per two, that stings.
I’ll still pass guys the stuff you refer to is infantry but I see little 15mm armour etc about. As for a GW player..erm no. Not even close by a long margin. Here is a little clue for you. When I started wargaming GW did not exist and WW2 was dominated by 20mm plastics both armour and infantry. Rule sets were not the pretty hardbound books with lots of art you get now and funny shaped dice were a thing for the future. As for the comment about 28mm being GW’s idea I have some napoleonic figures that predate GW in that scale…..
But hell guys ignore the meat of what I said and have a good old knit picking session 😉 Either way 10mm scale figures in plastic resin stops me dead. Add in the price per figure that is certainly not cheap and rules yet to be published but months of prehype on pretty painted minis. They have not even given you a taste of the rule set unlike every other small company game system that has at least quick start rules for download giving you some clue how much you need for a ‘serious’ game.
(I still think FoW is expensive for what it is)
> I see little 15mm armour etc about
Old Glory’s “Command Decision” range? The “Forged in Battle” range? Peter Pig’s WW2 line? This is just off the top of my head, I don’t even play WW2 at all (closest I’ve come is the the two blisters of FoW infantry that I bought and are still sitting in the ‘to paint’ pile). Again, I really don’t think you’re looking hard enough. 15mm WW2 games and models existed long before Flames of War appeared.
> funny shaped dice were a thing for the future
Wow, that’s impressive – d20’s existed in Roman times, so you must be positively antediluvian… although now I really am nitpicking 😉
You’ve been wargaming for over 35 years? That there is a might acheivement!
Also, GW was a magazine publisher that made stuff for other people’s stuff before that, so, I highly doubt that your wargaming career has spanned 40+ years.
GW is freaking old. Really freaking old.
Also, funny shaped die have been around for incredibly long periods of time. Any geometric shape that can stand on one face can be a die. I think people have known this for a very long time.
I love Warmachine and the 2 player battlebox is awesome value! It contains about £130 worth of miniatures though. It is also a very new addition to the Privateer Press Arsenal. Previously to this it would cost you around £65 to get started properly with Warmachine, The single player starter plus a unit and maybe a solo. Now as these models are much smaller we may have expected to get more but I don’t think the prices are insane. Also if you check out the site it does say that rules and battle reports will be available on the site before the game is released. Give the little guy a chance.
They posted a huge update on their FAQ, giving a lot more insight to the gameplay etc. I really recommend checking them out
They aren’t cheap but they are terrible either to compare as its similar would be heavy gear and that’s not cheap either.
How much does a full warmahordes or 40k army cost I would expect you will find its comparative.
For me the minis are lovely and detailed. And the rules have been play tested for longer than 2 months as when I spoke to save at salute he said they were in play testing then so I suspect that iterations have happened to the rules.
