Again, good to see a new face here. The paintjob looks very good, and there are some valuable tips in there, so many thanks for sharing.
Too bad, only a small area got painted. Makes it rather difficult to catch what’s going on at times. I see the point, though, that it would probably take ages to paint the whole model to that standard. Perhaps some fast forward sequences or moving on over several sessions would do the trick?
Anyway, another welcome addition to the team!

What’s most interesting is that I’ve already done a tutorial on green power armour, on an arm, and on a Dark Angel.
It’s always good to have two different teachers for the same thing, isn’t it ?
Getting a second opinion on how things are done is always interesting. I hope i don’t offend anyone saying this but Dave seems more of a table top painter while Romain feels more like a display painter. To put it a different way I’d probably ask Dave about painting an army, before asking Romain, as I think his style would suit an army wide approach better. Horses for courses and all that. Or I could just be picking up on a GW style of painting.
Only one real question if you don’t mind Dave. What changes would you make if you were painting a squad of ten guys?

Nope, not offended either Fredox. 🙂 I’ve won a few smaller competitions in my time, but when I paint to my ‘highest’ standard I…am……..so….so….very….slow. As for how I would change the method for 10 guys. I would:
1. basecoat them all Caliban green (GW) with a airbrush/spray gun/tank brush
2. Wash every model in its entirety with a thinned Nuln oil (GW) or a Dark tone (Army painter) straight from the pot.
3. Give every model a (GASP) heavy drybrush of Caliban green in a top to bottom direction for highlight effect
4. I would then give 3 extremely light drybrushes of Warpstone Glow (GW) in the same direction and
5. Do minimal line highlights with moot green (GW)
much quicker than blending highlights and looks good enough on the table.Hope that helps some 🙂
@fredox since your into feeling painters and all. I mean I paint a little too I wouldnt be offended if you were to get a feel for that as well.

I would reconsider using the GW brushes though. although they are cheaper per brush, the W+N series 7 lasts sooooo much longer and the tips are awesome for loading with paint and then releasing it to the model. Even when you take care of the GW they just fall apart (I know you mentioned the W+N, so I am not having a pop at you) 🙂
When taking paint out of the pots I would prefer using the arse end of the brush (a la Romain), as this way you are placing most of the paint on the pallet instead of washing most of it away in the water pot. This also keeps the tip of your brush fresher for longer (this was not important in your video as you used and old brush)
I am not a fan of the GW paints, I feel there is a good reason why they keep swapping the range around!! Stick with Vallejo game/model and air tbh as it is a brand that considers performance above all else and you even get more paint per pot at a cheaper price!!! But if this video was to keep things all GW is was suitably done.
I was going to mention the lack of mixing on the pallet, but you also mentioned this as well. So I guess this reinforces my observation about your useful chat. +1 charisma to you sir! I would have liked to see a bit of mixing and blending however, as this is useful for new painters etc.
Look forward to some more free painting videos as I find it quite relaxing and therapeutic to watch people paint (and I miss Romain’s silly jokes). 😀

I do use W+N 7 at home but I used to work for GW many years ago and have quite the surplus of brushes still. So I tend to use them for all purpose and W+N on my display pieces. However, the W+N are indeed vastly superior as you say 🙂
As for transfering paint, when I use the tail of the brush I tend to forget that I’ve wiped the residue from the brush on a tissue and then get covered in paint at some point later in the evening :s but I had never looked at it before from the point of view of wasting paint when using the bristles. Very true , ty.
For paint ranges I generally use a mix of Model colour, GW, Model air, Game colour , P3 and the army painter. Depending on my mood. In the video I used GW as I suppose they are they easiest to get hold of still…? and I am also returning to DA painting after some time away and thought I would see what I could do with GWs new paint range for myself and for people watching. I don’t mind them…but yeah…I agree that a painter should not be limited to just one brand…experiment and all that.

Enjoyed the video , well done Dave.
Not a fan of black lining myself (I prefer or more natural style with a simple lightsource and tend to paint in a similar way to Romain, if not nearly as well), but given its what people see in all of GW’s photography its a good idea to show it I suspect.
I always look forward To Romain’s videos. but I’m of the opinion that you can always learn something new where paintings concerned , so hope to see more from Dave too.
I always use rosemary & co for brushes, handmade sable, cheaper than GW Brushes.

I just love the taking and talking and taking talking some more taking you trough the model. Fantastic painting video gave me a real Bob Ross feeling 🙂 Think that’s a real talent.
The content:
There are some nice and good tips on painting. Like pulling to the light, how to use a wash.
But the stuff that’s not about painting the model was brilliant.
Like about taking care of the brush!
-don’t take paint from the bottle with your good brush.
-don’t let the paint get on the metal of the brush.
there are a few more things. The explain why he does what he does it that way.
Its a great video how to get started with painting your models. But even if you done a few army’s there are still some nice tips 🙂 I would love to see more vids like this one

Indeed, Whilst Dave is very informative and good at what he does. I do feel like I have grown attached to Romain and his tutorials /pats Romains head. 😀
Only wished more of his work was visible without the Backstage pass, as I personally feel there is not enough content on there for the price when compared to miniwargaming.com which has literally hundreds of videos on each gaming topic.

First of all, sorry it took so long to post on the video. Was having some problems with e-mail verification but I’m here now 🙂
Secondly, let me allay some fears about me taking over from Romain, as there have been comments about it here and on Youtube. Romain does a fantastic job and I have watched and enjoyed many of his videos myself. At no point was it ever my intention nor was it, in my opinion, ever alluded to by anyone I have talked with at BoW that I would ‘replace’ him in any way. In fact I think it would be fantastic if in some way we could work on videos together in the future. If Romain, BoW and you guys will have me 🙂
I was asked to come and do some painting tip videos that were relevant for Dark Angels week and beyond. That’s what I did. I honestly didn’t know Romain that you had ever done a video painting a Dark Angel arm as I do not have a backstage pass. If I did know that I would’ve chosen a different part to avoid any upset or confusion. I chose that part of the model on the day as I thought it would be the easiest part of the model for people to see on camera.
So I hope that clears some things up. Anway, thanks for all the great feedback guys. I’m not home at the moment but will be attempting to reply to individual comments this evening when I have some time.

Was nice of you to clear that up Dave, thanks. However, I would like to see you more on BoW as well as Romain and I hope others feel the same. I am sorry if I appeared to come across wanting one of you more than the other, it was not my intent. I think different approaches to art is not only a good thing, but in my mind, it is vital. Different artists have different approaches and the chance to experiment and critique yourself is part of the growing process for us all.

Don’t put the horse before the cart. There’s actually a great many tutorials I want to make purely with brushes, and in any case we’ll have to start with the very basics of airbrushing.
It’s another set of skills, and not one that many people intuitively apprehend…

A good quick wsh of nuln oil shade helps get the recesses of the model and helps deepen the green and makes recessses more prominant
A quick question for anyone who can help…what is the Vallejo Air equivalent of Caliban\DarkAngels Green? I have scoured at least 7 different paint conversion charts and can’t find one. I presume by this that there isn’t one, but thought I would ask those on here if they knew.

I know this is a fair while after the posting of the video, but I thought I’d a comment anyhow.
I really enjoyed the dialogue as it helped to explain what I was seeing.
Some great tips, the pulling the pigment towards the lightest points is awesome in its simplicity I am embarrassed I never thought of that, but it is effective.
I appreciate you talking about the ratio of water to paint in the different colours.
I watched Romain’s video’s on the USCR Commissar last week which prompter to blow the dust of my paints, clean my brushes and start painting again (an amazing feat).
I have a combat squad of Space Wolves ready for highlighting and after watching Dave I am far more confident in how to go about it.

Hey guys. I am new to painting miniatures. I got my 40K starter set yesterday. After I prepared and assembled my models, I attempted to brush on the Imperial Primer. Of course, it looks like crap. When I shook the paint and opened it, it was foamy. Is there something else I need to do?
