Happy Sunday!!!!
Happy sunday guys.
As Warren eats the twinkie I can just imagine that running through his head is OMG so good, OMG so bad, OMG so good……
So glad to hear Warren talking about 6mm Napoleonics 🙂
Great show! Fury looks awesome.
Love these on a Sunday but the vid kept jumping on my iPad the sound was good just the picture kept stoping and jumping especly on the trailer
The file size is a good bit bigger now for the extra resolution etc
Needs a bit more time to download and buffer 🙂
Another great show, like the new format so I can skip the Warren “discovery” of historic battles. Bloody good news about the Perry Bro’s, I gave them heaps when they were in Aus a few years ago for the games day about working for GW as their obvious talent is wasted there. I loved their old mini’s and their work on the LOTR minis are some of my favourites. Glad to see the will pursue their own destiny now. Looking forward to their new works.
Oh dear justin got his twinky out….
The Perrys have left GW? And on that bombshell! If they can churn out a mini a day in their spare time imagine what they can do full-time. We’ll be buried in an avalanche of awesome minis! This might explain the upcoming the price rise on the army deals. If you’ve been thinking about buying some Perry stuff, now is a good time to do it. I’ve just picked up a boatload of ACW minis from them.
had a lot of buffering issues, took me 2 hours to watch 🙁 the loading bar was a good 30 seconds-1 min forward of the play but kept pausing. Quite annoying.
Good show though guys, I want to see a weekender from Johns with Sherman and guns 😀
What device?
I’ll have it looked into 🙂
Best of luck to Perrys. I’ve gotta agree that their talent was mostly wasted in GW and am really looking forward to their future releases.
Hi Guys another great show. The bagpiper was in the film was the Longest Day and the guy in the film was the real piper that took park on D-Day he played himself in the film.
as a matter of information the reason why the 95th didn’t go into square was because they are rifle troops, (skirmish troops). there job was to go forward and harass the enemy.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King's_Royal_Rifle_Corps (my old regiment) If you want me to bore you with more history just ask.
Glad to hear you guys got to play a little Warzone. Justin, make sure you get a Death Egg for your Cybertronic force!
you mean the heavy walker?
That’s the one. I mean, sure, I could just call it the Eradicator Deathdroid but it’s always going to be the Death Egg to anyone familiar with the previous edition 😉
Granted it’s only going to be useful in the “Heavy” Organisation Chart so.. you will be forgiven if you decide to get a Scorpion instead. I hear it has a pop-up attack of doom.
Of dooooooooooom!
XLBS and coffee, I would not start a Sunday in any other way.
Thanks guys for a fantastic show.
I used to have the buffering issue but its grand now for whatever reson.
Im realy starting to like the Dust Walkers. Fury looks great.
I wasn’t at Q-Con this year as it’s been getting progressively worse and worse, this year my friend was telling me that there were no wargames, and very little rpgs. He also spent a lot of time talking to the Hawk wargames and Prodos guys, both told him it had been very quiet and also that on the 18th July Queens is holding a wargaming weekend. Considering that the Slayers are running both they fairly screwed over both companies. Neither of which reckon they can make it back in 2 weeks. It’s hard enough to get companies over here and they managed to piss them off, very poor show all in all.
I’m having a total nightmare trying to watch this. Runs beautifully until 35:43 and then breaks up (buffer bar far ahead). Tried on two different computers… same thing
I had roughly the same but change to Firefox and it where fine.
Watched the Waterloo movie yesterday and started listening to ‘La Victoire est a Nous!’ good show Warren!
Just wanted to write a few quick comments. Love your weekender and XLBS, its the reason Im a backstage member. lol Glad to see your journey back into 40K, like to see more Orky stuff! As for the historical, I love history. We are small men on the shoulders of the giants of history. The past should never be forgotten. But having retired from military service due to injuries sustained in combat, I must tell you its not a fun game to play for real. In my humble opinion, reenactments are a tool to better understand the first hand view of combat, but by no means should it be considered a game or a hobby. War and combat are no game gentlemen, men and woman are losing their lives in this pursuit today. My hope is soldiers perspective will be considered while you pretend to be in their shoes. Active soldiers don’t get a guarantee they get to go home when they hit the battlefield, and some never make it back.
I think that is a careful balance that needs to be considered in wargaming. Ultimately what goes on here is just a game but I’d hope everyone keeps some kind of perspective of what is being represented. If you’re interested Two Fat Lardies released one of their Specials recently which has a very well written introduction about just this topic. They feel that rather than cheapening their sacrifices wargaming these events helps us to remember the people who fought and how much they gave.
I had to reply to you, your comments are brilliant and one of the main reasons I do re-enactments. I think I gain more by being involved than the public who view them. Of course it’s not anywhere near as dangerous, although accidents happen, but the adrenaline hit you get when the shooting starts and then trying to remember where your supposed to be, whats going on and all your safety procedures it’s not hard to feel like you are getting a slight feeling of what you real soldiers do.
On the point of being careful to call it a hobby, I think it is a hobby, but one driven totally by the enthusiasm to display to people the equipment, circumstances and dangers that are inherent to combat-like scenarios. I have always found that people who don’t share this drive generally don’t stay in groups very long, or if they do, don’t participate in the mock-battle aspect.
For me, I enjoy it because I guess I want to potray history in a way thats engaging and educational without being “glossed” by Movies and TV. And as vindication of that mindset we have a ww2 American vet who attends our shows every year and always talks about how good it is to see people showing such passion for what he took part in when he was 19.
I really appreciate your comment. I am certainly able to change my views on the definition of “Hobby”. Passion implies an inherit attention to detail. To me that equals perspective and respect of Soldiers. Thank you.
@dtopping – just wanted to send a quick comment myself. As a veteran and retired police officer (early retirement) I have seen the horrors of combat myself whether as a Blackhawk crewchief / flight medic or as a police officer. I do not think anyone who participates in military re-enactments is doing it as mindless fun. These people do it with an intense sense of responsibility to maintain history for the next generation. They feel a desire to keep alive the sacrifices of those who have gone before them so we can hopefully learn from them. And, yes I do think it can be a hobby, a hobby is some thing one has a passion for and does on a consistent basis. The time, energy and resources one person puts into re-enacting is tremendous and is not taken lightly. As @johnlyons states those who do, do not last long.
I for one am honoured that people have taken time out of their own lives to keep alive the history you and I and others like us have made and sacrificed for.
Remember: “one who does not learn from history is doomed to repeat it”
But i did get as far as the Bagpiper… could that be “mad” Jack Churchill?
“Mad” Jack Churchill (I believe) was the British officer who believed a true officer was not properly dressed without his sword, so assaulted Sword Beach using a Sword and a Longbow.
I also seem to remember he was captured by the Germans and held as a P.O.W, but kept alive and treated well as they believed he was related to the British P.M. (How true that is I am not 100% sure).
Hi Guys,
Also had issues watching. Video stuttered quite a bit but audio was fine. I’m on iPhone 5, up to date OS.
Cracking show though!
As m’learned Backstagers have said, huge news about the Perry brothers. Is this a BoW scoop?
Bill Millin was the piper who followed Lord Lovat off the landing craft on Sword Beach. Don’t know if it’s true but the Germans didn’t shoot at him as they thought it bad luck!
Btw lots of buffering issues on iPad
Glad you got the mini Justin! Seeing Romain paint it would be incredible! Warren, Rob from Prodos apologised for not giving you the book I passed to him for you and has said he will send it. I hope you get it at some point! Great show guys 🙂
its a really cool little mini and i think it deserves a paint up from romain just need to show it off to him and see if he likes it 🙂
Warren, please have a go at reading the Sharpe novels. They are sooo much better than the TV show. Bernard Cornwell is my favourite author by far. He does Viking/Saxon and 100 year war stuff too. Pretty much in every book he writes he takes an actual battle and tweaks the events to weave his characters though it. Then he explains what he changed in a little section at the end. He always puts you in the front line at where the pivotal events took place. These books gave me a whole new respect for the period.
I second that! Truly brilliant novels.
Great Video, I never had the waterloo set, too expensive for us at the time, but I do remember having some of the boxes of soldiers they used to sell, we used to play ‘army’ by rolling marbles at each others forces. Sure we had some of the napoleonic cavalry and troops, but I’m positive we had some 8th army figures in there with them too.
Loved the video as always, thanks.
Warren if you want some inspiring martial pipe music from your side if the Channel, Youtube up Black Bear.
Lord Lovat of the special boat service, royal marine commandos had his batman play the bagpipes during D-Day. I believe his name was Bill Murray.
Also on Napoleonic’s, If cavalry did charge a square they were betting on the fact that the front runners who were killed would roll into the face of the square and open a way for the rest to follow. This would also create a snowball effect as the survivors of the first square would attempt to get into the safety of another regiment’s square creating a gap for any following cavalrymen
I went with Cybertronic for the same reason – only good thing about that judge dredd film was the robot, if you ask me – got into abc warriors recently as well so there ya go. News of the Perry Twins leaving is great! I cant wait to see what they do next!
my choice of tabletop gaming music is more on the heavy Industrial side personally : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3AwY8Nf7zk
wouldnt suit historical at all, but for sci-fi there is nothing better or more suitable.
Like John says at the beginning – Everything could use more “tank!”
At 16:10 . . . I’ve read about “track cleats” that German crews fixed to the sides of the tracks on their PzKpfw III and IVs in the first winter in Russia. I’ve also seen “track extensions” thatwident the tracks on late-war Shermans for mud. I’m pretty sure the post-Shermans used by the Israelis always had “extended tracks” (just wider sets, no bolt-on extensions) to help spread the weight a little for the heavier load of the upgraded tank.
The late war shermans had “HVSS” suspension which had wider track, such as the Sherman M4A3E8 which went on, in part, to build the Israeli M57 Super Sherman. Heck, you could write a whole article on wet-muddy weather solutions for tanks but it would be VERY sleep inducing 😉
The actor who died by an accident with a .44 Magnum blank was named Jon-Erik Hexum, October 1984. It was an American TV show called “Cover Up.”
I remember Bruce Lee’s kid died in the making of the first crow movie. same thing with a blank from a few feet away.
Yep, @pepsidan , Brandon Lee. From what I read, an object of some kind was lodged in the barrel of the .44. mag revolver used in the movie. The set armorer checked the weapon, ensured it was loaded with blanks, but when it was fired it unfortunately propelled that . . . whatever it was (not a bullet) down the barrel at the actor.
I thought I would be the only one on this site who would have watched that show!
oops, that was supposed to be placed below the “cover up” comment. I KNOW everyone on the planet has seen the Crow. “Fire it Up! Fire it Up! Fire it Up!”
“Happy Devil’s Night . . . my new favorite holiday!”
To be honest I’ve seen 2 out of the three I know of . Loved the first ,2nd was ok herd 3rd was ok , but still haven’t seen it.
Happy Sunday Guys, Awesome show . Love the ideal of John’s armor show. Please if you could go and do a whole vlog on it, I think that would be wickedly awesome. Folks here in the states, I do think have to many of that type of shows. I just get to see the few national guard units at parades around town. And thanks for the great news on the Perry’s, free from the corp. over lords, again just fricken awesome. thanks guys see you’ll next week, same time, same bat channel.
Warzan’s Gamer Dad bit made me want to make something for my son. Behold! Cardboard spaceship and helmet!
http://imgur.com/1zz1ana
Love it!
I built Savanna a sit in rocket recently with:
1 Box (Cut little bits here and there to make wings and a tail) – Sprayed Silver
6 Large Plastic Cups (Boosters) – Sprayed Black
2 Large Soda Bottles (Oxygen Tanks) – Sprayed Day Glo Orange
1 Old Mobile & 2 CD’s (Control Panel)
Hot Glue Gun
Result… One happy little girl for an afternoon 🙂
Playback keeps crapping out at 27 odd mins. Using both flash and html settings. And it’s not the first time. I’m getting some sort of problem with almost every vid. Will have to dump my backstager soon as there’s no point paying for stuff I can’t watch. Any chance of making the vids downloadable?
Can you post some specs of what your viewing on so we can try to test against that please?
IE11.0.5 works fine on Firefox, just PM me if you want more specs on the system
Lord Lovat’s piper was William Millen, Piper Bill. Lord Lovat’s commandos were the relief force at Pegasus bridge. Piper Bill played as the 1 Special Service Brigade commando’s stormed across the bridge under German fire
Lord Lovat had the piper walking up and down the beach playing the pipes for pretty much the entire landing, Afterwards the piper had gone up to some of the captured German soldiers and asked why he hadn’t been shot, they replied, “we thought you had gone insane.”
He was also the only Scottish soldier who wore a kilt for the landing.
That’s the one, I was never any good with names or acronyms for that matter! 🙂
Great video as always, go easy on Sharpe its not that bad!
Haha yeah I love those old Sharpe TV movies. Sure they can be a little cringeworthy sometimes but it’s all part of the fun 😀
Well, that’s my earth shattered a bit. I’ve always seen the Sharpe films as classics. – Basically James Bond of the 19th century, with extra battles!
Also, to cheer Justin up, I’ve seen the new Turtles trailer and it does make the film look slightly less completely terrible than the first one. At least there’s a tiny glimmer of the vaguest hint of there being something actually Turtle-ish about it.
Damn….the “spirit” of wargamming must have been floating around this week. I messaged you guys about Fury AND recommended getting in touch with the Perry’s for historical goodness. Great minds think alike…LOL. Cheers!
Just watched yet another great xlbs. And as luck has it I live just a stone throw from the tiger tank used in Fury. Even better still next weekend, 5th and 6th of july is Bovington Tank Museum wargame fest.
And on the subject of Bovington Wargaing.net, which you mentioned helps restore the maus, also was having a fundraiser (so to speak) to help Bovington tank museum keep their tanks running.
Love their passion about the real world too not only doing great games.
@johnlyons Hey John, maybe I missed it in the video but where did you say these re-enactments were likely to be? The War and Peace show by any chance?
I might actually get a chance to go this year..
Great show! I too love the pipes and military bands. I had the honour of participating in the colour guard when the Black Watch and Prince of Wales Band performed at a local stadium, The Waterloo set looks awesome and I will have to see if I can find one like it! As far as Salute 2015, we booked our hotel today!
You know what? Every year I say I will go and I never do. I just booked a room too. At £108 for a night, those prices are only going to go up lol
Is that a good price? I did not realize London could be so expensive. I literally watched the price increase online while we were looking for rooms. I almost booked at the Four Seasons, because they had a really great sale and then the price doubled instantly and no longer a great price. We are really looking forward to seeing this in person and sharing a few pints.
Put it this way – back in April I had to book a hotel in London for one night’s stay this week.. and even though it’s ‘only’ a Premier Inn it cost £200 for one night. So half that at somewhere that *isn’t* the Premier Inn is a good deal!
just heared me name, Gues i won the dust tactics price
Congratz
Bit of a flash back moment as I watched this, but how many in the UK ever watched Game of War?
http://www.ukgameshows.com/ukgs/Game_of_War
Maybe fun to try and dig up if there are clips in Youtube.
Guys, great show as usual and congrats to Havoc(?) on winning the Dust competition.
Warren, you might want to pick up a copy of 4 days in June a great book by Ian Gale all about the Waterloo campaign.
Also if looking at an ‘alternative’ Waterloo http://www.alternative-armies.com/collections/flintloque-game-system
Orcs, Elves etc in Napoleonic uniforms, the game can be played as a skirmish game but they also have a mass battle system. May give you the chance to do an historical battle with a twist.
Looking forward of Dust to Dust and more DUST related materials. Please do a DUST Battlefield battle report as soon as you can and put that KönigsLuther to work.
We’re planning the table build for this at the moment 🙂
Just wondering if @johnlyons has any book recommendations regarding WWII history, particularly military and even more particularly mechanised?
I’ve long been interested in the era but must admit I’m a bit like @warzan discussing Waterloo. It would be nice to have some accuracy to my enthusiasm 😉
Have to say I’m liking the new video format, because i can download it to my PS3 and playback at my leisure. Also, as far as I’m aware @warzan providing nothing comes up (death/natural disaster of some description) you lot are welcome back, i might also have arranged a slightly bigger place for you to stay at, failing that, my front room again 🙂
@johnlyons read this little article, its by a friend of mine who was a tank driver in WW2 http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ww2peopleswar/stories/48/a2155448.shtml
The Waterloo set is the reason I started painting minis in the first place. If you could do napoleonics in 6mm it would be great as I’ve always been interested in that scale but know nothing about it. Any chance of a black powder demo game?
Never thought I’d like historical novels but have to second the Uhtred of Bebbanburg series by Cornwell as really good and although not quite historical actually quite enjoyed his trilogy on Arthur as well. Never eeally coudl get into the Sharpe ones though. Also after nearly four years £3.79 for backstage/month for backstage, £lots on scenery and models-well that’s just our hobby, winning a BoW comp and getting a mention on the weekender £priceless. 😉 congrats to the other winners too. Cheers lads.
The whole time @warzan was talking about Waterloo . . . I was watching @johnlyons . . . poised and ready to crown him upside the dome with that potato masher grenade . . . until that AirFix set came out. 😀 What a cool set! Enough to make John put the grenade down!
39:10 – the Horse. One of only two species of animal on Earth silly enough to line up on a field and run into musket and cannon fire.
The other species of animal to engage in this behavior? Guesses anyone? 😐
uhh would that be homo sapiens sapiens?
Great show as always, but lots of stuttering video and I download it so I can watch it offline on my commute! Using iPhone 4s and Video Downloader.
Congrats Havlock !…I was really hoping to win the Dust Kickstarter 🙁
