noooo i wanted the 1st lol
Quick question on the Horus Heresy narrative campaign weekends, Stuart. Do you need a SM/CSM army to play or are other armies accommodated?
You can use any of the armies the campaign pack permits. For Massacre it will be Dark Eldar, Eldar, Astartes Legions, Imperial Army, Chaos Daemons and Orks
The prospect of The Second Siege of Terra is an exciting one 😀 I still like the idea that Sigmar was one of the Lost Primarchs though 😉
Sounds like it should be epic in scale though and I’d certainly be interested in writing something up.
BoW Ben
I always wondered if Sigmar was the Emperor in another age, since the Emperor is supposed to have been around for thousands of years, guiding mankind’s destiny.
That is one awesome project, guys!
If you listened to Rick Priestley’s interview or if you regularly read Jervis Johnson’s column in White Dwarf, you will know that 40k was made to be a reservoir of ideas to create your own stories. It was made as a base for your imagination to go wild and create games and events you and your friends would enjoy.
I really like the idea and though I will not be able to attend this event (I live in Quebec, Canada), I will surely participate through the forums.
Have a nice week-end too, guys!
excellent guys love narative building for campaigns and doing your own thing
I think your inheritor idea is cool, reminds me of the return of the clans in battletech.
Not criticising by the way, just when I heard your idea I thought “cool, that’s just like the blood of keresky books”. I hope it goes well and you will fun.
What I find odd in gaming in the gaps is that it takes the same or more effort than creating a game from scratch.
In any case, while I am not sure I can participate, what I find more inspiring about your project is the fact that it tried to infuse common sense and realism in a world devoid from it, I would say the conflict of worlds will be sharper in the design perspective.
I love the idea.
My first thought was inevitably my own army, I play a home brewed Blood Angels successsor chapter , basically using all the rules but allowing me to not paint everything bright red and use the cool spartan stuff from Scibor and Anvil so my space marines have some character.
My first idea was ‘the sanguinor’ , an entity that appears when most needed, then disappears, and has done for 10,000 years…
What if he is part of the returnees, and always has been, keeping an eye on the imperium’s progress and reporting back on the development of the blood angels chapter , and the danger of the curse. Maybe they see the curse not as an affliction, but as evolution of warriors, and mindless blood thirsty attack dogs are whats needed for the threats they have faced , and possibly will have to face again.
Ohhh interesting idea
@warzan you made the point the other day that we own the game. Well if this gets going it will certainly take ownership up a level. When I think of all the cool models out there this could get very exciting.
Indeed, I can see this being the separation of game and compnay discussed in last weeks weekender where the game gets adapted and expanded beyond the creating company. Bloodbowl has done it.
Interesting project. Also a change of pace as it beings pure sci-fi in the grim dark of the 40K universe
Really great idea guys. This is the best way to future proof our game from the failings of any one company, exactly what I have been alluding to in my posts. Love the concept, an I will enjoy participating in the posts. As kombine said earlier, very similar concept as battletech, but a very different premis and potential thou. This idea alone makes the backstage $$ worth it.
If you wanted to unify the players, I think this is the way to do it. Us old farts who play rogue trooper will now get to use all the home made gubbins lying around the worktable. Here comes IG on jet bikes again,
Inheritance sounds awesome!!! Think some questions will need to be answered sooner than others – eg are there still space marines or not? But it will be an awesome project with the right handling 🙂
… Especially since we can now answer the question of who was maintaining all the gear in the absence of the mechanicum… That’s right – it was your old friends the Squats!!!!
I always wanted to know what happens if you bring some light in the grim and dark future of the 41th millennium. Now I’ll probably get to know. Really cool idea, indeed.
Three words.
Oh! Hell! Yes!
Wow. I love writing sci-fi shorts and would LOVE to write a first contact story.
I’ve already got ideas buzzing on how would the Inheritors take to seeing dreadnoughts (gallery fallen warriors who deserve there eternal rest), perhaps the calous way the Guard are treated by Marines. Any other sparks like that would be most welcome (obviously the main “the emperor has fallen” would be in there too lol)
So this is how my last few days have panned out –
Thursday – got married
Friday – received full funding for my PhD
Saturday – won the Mountain King
The highlight of the last few days? Has to be receiving a phonecall from Justin 🙂
Inheritence looks very interesting though I’ll likely be a (constructive) voice from the sidelines as I haven’t played 40K regularly since 2nd ed. I would tend to favour not having them as “another” Space Marine army. There’s all sorts of good reasons why they wouldn’t be, some of which were mentioned in the show.
Thoroughly enjoyed this week’s Weekender/Weekender XLBS (and not for the obvious reason). I think the dynamic between the three of you is great, and whilst I enjoy the guests talking about their games, I prefer the format even more when it’s just some gamers chatting about the hobby.
Lucky bugger
Sounds like a good week! Congrats
First off congrats redben three times. Great vid guys, this new avenue has given me goose bumps and cant wait for it to get started.
This such an awesome idea. look forward to hearing more
Great idea guys! Gaming at its best!
So I was thinking of the all important First Contact. I haven’t read a great deal about these Primarchs or the early history so I just started with a few assumptions:
1 – They were sent TOGETHER to annihilate a very dangerous and powerful alien race that the Father had foreseen would otherwise destroy humanity in the future if they are allowed to continue their existence.
This would take them 10,000 years to accomplish.
The two Primarchs would have very different characters, abilities and methods of fighting.
They are both totally loyal to the Father and so would overcome their differences and develop tactics that are unique, suited to their particular enemies, and not influenced by the other Primarchs.
The original technologies that they took with them would be upgraded or disregarded to combat the arms race specific to their enemies.
2 – The Father had foreseen the Heresy, he had told them to have no contact with the rest of Mankind until they had completed their mission.
He would have prepared them for the task ahead and given them guidelines to ensure that they kept alive his dreams and goals.
He would have provided enough resources, both technical and human, to ensure that the war was sustainable.
They would need to set up colonies to form base worlds for agriculture, mining, manufacture and recruitment and training.
The arms race they would encounter would be specific to the enemy(s) they were fighting.
The tactics developed would be tailored to the enemy(s) they encountered.
The technologies and advances made would be unique to them and their enemies.
The other Primarchs would have no influence on their techniques or tactics.
The Geneseed would eventually be depleted or greatly reduced unless genetics or technology succeeded in reproducing it.
The Primarchs and Space Marines would have families and so new generations of warriors would be born. This would be essential to the plan, even if the Geneseed was not transferable.
3 – By the time the mission was completed there would be a vast ‘Empire’ of the two Primarchs to bring home.
So here is the problem…
Does everyone pack up and leave at once or do the Primarchs and their ‘new’ legions scout the territory first?
If everyone comes – do they have huge fleets or can they move whole worlds?
If the Primarchs and a few legions come, will they be so horrified with the state of affairs that they will call in the full might of their ‘empire’ to crush the scourge, or will they fight their way as quickly as possible to Earth to speak to the Father himself – believing him to still be alive – to try to understand why he has let this happen.
Well done! Nice thought provoking exercise and looks good for some very interesting gaming!
Thank you.
Just a thought, but one that influences everything… Who was the enemy?
Wow! Huge project, inspired and inspiring, true. I know too little of the official fluff to be able to add much value. I find it all very interesting. Keeping balance and creating something unique will be challenging. However, that is the fun part of exploring the hobby.
Its a departure from the traditional fluff so I would image any great ideas would be welcome
So what happens when we see this idea hit Black Library a few years down the line?
This is exactly what I love about 40k. One angle that I always thought would be good is that of the old idea of the Star Children. I always get shot down whenever I bring it up.
If you don’t know about it, its about the offspring of the Emperor. Its claimed that the Emperor had many children over the decades he was alive before he started the Imperium. The descendent of his kids are still alive and don’t know they have his genes. Officially GW gave up on that story line and made it a lie from cultists as an excuse to cut it out.
I envisioned that the Star Child would seek to unite all life forms under him, not just mankind. He and is siblings would come back and take the throne by force if need be. I see it much like the movie Chronicles of Riddick main villain the Necromonger army. Like them, the star child would subjugate others even races under him. They have no need for the old ways and except new technology without reservation. I could see this as a very scary army, with Orks, Tau, Eldar and even Tyranids under his control, not just humans. All shaped to fill a role in his Empire.
This could be the ultimate enemy for the Inheritance.
This is brilliant. I don’t play 40K myself prefering other games, but this is the sort of project that really appeals to me. I’ve passed the info on to my club mates who love 40K, it sounds like something some of them would love.
Glad to see that I’m not the only one that spotted the parallels to Battletech here! Which, again, is not a bad thing at all!
It will be really interesting to see what 10,000 years of divergence has done to two different societies, given that the Battletech exodus and return spanned 250-300 years; during that time the Clans (exodites) completely restructured their society, introduced caste systems, eugenic breeding programs (resulting in some very divergent phenotypes) as well as the technology changes.
Unfortunately some people lament the whole introduction of the Clans in Battletech as having messed the game up, due to power creep and imbalance. Good thing that you guys have the wisdom to avoid any problems with balance issues.
This is so cool!
Don’t forget that the Space Wolves are still actually a Legion, as well as the Dark Angels who maintain strong links with their second founding chapters. The Space Wolves operate from one their original homeworld of Fenris and have not become chapters in the same manner as the other former Legions, who have their own traditions and concerns. They fight for the Allfather, and for Russ; always in wait for their Primarch’s return. So while they’ve become Great Companies of a thousand marines, it’s only really to pay lip service to Roboute Guilliman’s Codex Astartes, as they don’t give a flying monkey’s what it says and operate as they have done since their founding as a Legion (hot damn, I love talking about this stuff, lol). And then there is the 13th Company of Space Wolves, led by Bulvye (I think that was his name) who are in the warp, chasing after the remnants of the Thousand Sons, as written about in the Space Wolf books, where Ragnar meets them. They could be brought back as another company to aid the primarchs.
Yes, the Great Companies would be here and there, defending this and fighting that, but they are ALL Space Wolves, and are the Rout through and through.
Then there’s The Lion, who’s still asleep in the Rock. He’s meant to spring back to life when the Imperium needs him. In the new codex, it adds a bit of fluff where the Inquisition/High Lords of Terra is suspicious of them still harbouring Legion tendencies.
And I think, in the case of both forces, that where weapons and vehicles are concerned, they still have access to relic gear from the heresy era – and since GW themselves have released new models that are meant to be relics from old STC’s (Storm Raven, Storm Talon, the new Dark Angel Land Speeder variants and the rest) there’s nothing to say that they don’t have their old Legion wargear locked away somewhere. And on these returning Primarchs ships, there would also be things like the Knights in the Heresy novels, and other cool stuff.
.
So, in talking about the return of the two missing Primarchs, Russ and The Lion, should be factored into this new extension to the fluff. I’m not sure who else from the surviving Loyalist Primarchs of the Heresy is meant to be alive, and if they disappeared somewhere as well, but they could return too. I can imagine the Wolf King himself bellowing out an almighty howl that reaches into the minds of every Vlka Fenryka in the galaxy, bringing them to his side to rejoin him once more.
I dunno what the Lion would do, though. Perhaps he’ll awaken with a mega psychic shout for some coffee when he wakes up and a Primarch sized cauldron of a Chaos Black coffee is made lol. 😀
But, that aside, I think that while these two missing Primarchs come back, this must be THE event that brings back Russ, The Lion, and whomever else is still alive.
I’m just wondering what these two guys will be called and what their Legions will be all about? I’ll have to extrapolate these ideas in the threads. 😀
Love it, as a returned older wargamer to 40K Im just loving it. Second video on backstage ( Mr Priestly being first, cmon Beyond..cmon boy :).
I go to two groupes here around Meath and Id like to show them this video and see where it goes. The Idea for this so describes my re entry, thanks a lot for the animated idea Stew.
