I’m sure Justin is a valued friend and a hard worker. Please don’t let him talk. Thanks!
I have to agree …
Also, didn’t Zvezda made miniature models at 1:100 scale for its own miniature game ? but you can still use them for cheap flames of war tanks.
Level 7 looks like a fantastic game, seems to have a claustrophobic / DOOM feel about it.
ive never won anything!!
Sorry, Justin, I have to agree with John and Lloyd. Megabot would be boring and impossible to score with paintballs. Are they supposed to use the splatter rule where a single drop of paint is enough to count you out? Although, that military robot looked like a headless cow which might fit in with the arena fight. Maybe they could set in on fire like in Mars Attacks.
Sign me up for Level 7, please.
Great video guys.
I like the plastic version of the tank the best, I also do scale modelling so I am perhaps a little biased, but I think the Italeri renditions of the tanks are so much better. Yes, the zimmarit is lighter compared to the resin one, but i suspect that at the scale they are, the plastic tank is more lifelike, and the resin one is overdone so you can actually see it. Once company John didn’t mention that I would love to see get involved in wargaming is Revel. They don’t have the most technically perfect kits, but they do strike a great balance between cost and kit detail, their 1/32 Hawk and 1/48 Tornado especially of recent releases, and I think they would perhaps make the transition to wargaming pieces better than most.
Justin they already have 1 to 1 scale war-gaming it’s called paintball you need to clarify it as 1 to 1 scale mech war-gaming but yeah I have to agree with Lloyd while the concept might sound cool I think it would be boring as hell.
On the other hand the new bolt action plastic tanks don’t look boring at all and I think I’ll have to have a closer look into the game and tank warfare now.
Thanks for another great episode
I came to wargaming from scale modelling and I am sooooooooo excited by the Italeri stuff. It’s a shame there’s not more communication between the two communities. There are so many superb techniques and ideas in both.
Jesus, is Lloyd suffering from PMS?
First Weekender I did not finish watching.
Likewise.
If you ever watched Sesame Street with Oscar the Grouch… You would get @lloyd 😉
He’s not angry … He’s my brother!!!!
More importamt, Warren: family ok?
I actually thought Lloyd did a great job! We enjoyed the show.
Don’t know what everyone is bitching about, I quite enjoyed the rant, nice seeing someone being enthusiastic!
If you skip the shouting about robots it’s not so bad
I turned off as well it just got annoying. He didn’t seem to understand then idea that you won’t have that in 50 years if you don’t start somewhere. Would it be entertaining now? No, but it never will unless you make a start.
And I’m certainly not afraid of something because a man responsible for how I buy pizza is afraid of it
lol that kickstarter… the technology is already there… many ppl have done it in japan and american making similar robots armed with real guns… so its just a bunch of guys who wants to build robots as toys as their life and they want you to pay for it?… doesn’t make sense… I would put the money in if i know those guys and can build it with them?!?!
Also if its actually can help our tech develop trust me they can find loads of funding through military funding there’s loads of people that are willing to invest in weaponary.
What many people don’t realise/know is that many of civilization’s rapid tech/surgical advances came about through war and military research funding.
Justin,
Check this out http://www.syfy.com/robotcombatleague
Justin, im wih you. 1on1 scale wargaming is cool. Even if it painballs, like you said. It the first generation, but they didnt want to hear that. Mechs rulezzz
Look their obviously trying to pretend or believe they are capable of building these things but theyre just NOT. This is possible then it would be awesome but the simple fact is that it will NEVER live up to what theyre promising.
Dont get me wrong I understand that Justin is excited because it COULD be fun IF! it turned out to be as theyre showing in the stolen clips from movies etc but the currently technology is no where near about for this to be functional enough to be anything more than tedious and dull.
I’m with Lloyd and John on the robots.
It was good to see the comparison between the resin and plastic Panther. Can you do that with the other plastic kits?
Really looking forward to the Myth week.
Dear Lloyd and John,
Re: Megabots.
YOU JUST DON’T GET IT, DO YOU?
Anyway, I just think that John feels that his tanks are going to be made obsolete when giant stompy robots eventually happen (in 500 years time…)
On a more serious note; forget A.I. being scary, forget big robots being scary (or not).
What about A.I. taking over the big robots and paintballing the meatbags to death?!
You never know, could happen…
With Lloyd and John on the whole giant robot issue. Love the new plastics from Warlord.
Bring on more tanks lol
cool weekender, but I think Justin may have watched Robot Jox a few too many times if he thinks that kickstarter will take off
Oh my god! I thought I was the only one remembering that movie! Some of my friend even think I made it all up!
Level 7 Omega Protocol? Yes please! 😉
Great episode for my coffe and hobby time, gluing and painting minis and having fun!
With lloyd on the walker thingy, its laughable..
I think as far as the robotech thing goes I think it would be better if instead of firing minigun quantities of paintballs into the cab you should have to target certain areas such as disabling the legs or weapon sets that would make it much more interesting to watch.
Great show
Would love to see a painting tutorial on doing camo. My camo effects on 28mm just look like blobs of colour.
For the painting, eyes are always something I struggle with. The minis tend to end up looking like they’re staring.
To be true 1:1 scale wargaming, you need some giant dice to knock off those silly Megabots!
I can see why Justin would get his geek on with this, but I just can’t see it happening without impact sensors, cool idea though.
Also, AI with just speaker and camera is scary enough… remember HAL from 2001?
Count me in for a punt at winning L7 guys. Another great show.
Megabots will fail. it only has 18 days left and are not even at $50,000 yet. They want a Mill and a half… not likely…
Great show, enjoyed the comparison of resin vs plastic
nice vid guys, mega robots for the win
P. S. Painting, camo patterns for BA would be good, and eyes as mentioned.
Want a little madness – something exciting to watch? Universal Weapon Master armour (at sensible human scale) coming to you in the near future… http://uwm.tv/
I enjoyed the teaser about Romain’s upcoming tutorials, the Bolt Action Starter set and the brief comparison between the resin and plastic tanks. The KS insert about the life size mechs and the endless rant made me want to skip ahead, for the very first time in a year and a half. You might want to time box each topic next time. 😉 What I like about the team is that each member has their own area of expertise. John is the tank / vehicle / WWII expert, Loyd knows everything about great terrain building, Justin is the go to guy for Steampunk and Weird, Sam can make me want to play fantasy and Warren embodies the ever excited gamer combined with a deep insight of the industry. I absolutely enjoy the shows where everyone gets a chance to shine in their particular area. In this episode, I’d have preferred to hear John take the lead on the Bolt Action topics. I never considered playing WWII until I started seeing a combination of John’s enthusiasm for historical battles, Warren’s excitement for Flames of War and Loyd’s top tips to make a gaming table look absolutely stunning. It might be something to keep in mind, and in focus, when assigning topics next time. You’re spot on most of the time and I guess it slipped a bit this time. Shortening the KS rant might also have freed up some time to briefly talk about the Omega Protocol game. Keep up the great work. I love BoW and the quality of the shows keeps improving week by week. If I’d be living closer, I’d volunteer for a supporting PM position today. 🙂
And my sincere apologies for repeatedly misspelling your name, Lloyd.
I guess both Lloyd and Justin are right about the giant robots. If they just lumber around shooting each other with paint balls it will be boring. If the paint balling was just a prelude while they closed in on each other to pummel each other in close combat then it could be good. Close combat weapons could be made interesting (think Robot Wars) though it would make it dangerous for the pilots.
SCARY AI MOVIES:
Some modern films mentioned, what others, maybe older, have creepy AI at the heart of it? Starting with:
– 2001 a space Odyssey (HAL)
– Wargames “Do you want to play a game of Global Thermo-Nuclear War?” (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086567/)
– Electric Dreams (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087197/)
– Demon Seed (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075931/)
– Wall-E (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0910970/)
Painyng tut ftw
I’m with Lloyd and John too. Although the idea of having real giant robots fighting each other is cool, shooting paintballs won’t cut it.
In regard to the replica vs representation: I’m a gamer first and foremost, so I prefer representation.
I’m with Lloyd and John on this one. Justin, stick to gaming!
Really wish i could be with justin on this but it’s never going to be an interesting to watch, maybe it could work as a experience day thing. Thanks for the armourgeddon info though john, just googled it and did a little sex wee.
Your welcome!… I hope you had tissues handy.
Replica vs representation, one of the most interesting discussions you guys have had.
Megabot, so far the most boring rant you’ve guys have had. Stay clear of subjects not related to miniature wargaming. If megabot is 1:1 wargaming, then so is the paintball hobby…doesn’t make sense.
Btw yesterdays Weekender was really good!
Cheers!
Looking forward to Romains painting Need some tips on red skin as I want to build and paint a Darth talon mini 😀
Well, for myth problems. I mainly bumped into quests that are unclear.
I’ve been able to wing it, but I would’ve prefered some more clarity on what to actually do.
There was this one quest where I had to protect some soldiers during a slaughterfield event.
But the soldiers had no stats, so there was no way for the darkness to attack them.
I ended up gving them 1 vitality, 4 threat, two movement and no attacks.
Level 7 Omega Protocol, great looking game! Justin…Kingdom Death pinups…enough said 😉
Great looking mini’s though!
Yeah giant Robot paintball is daft.
Good show as always guys
I’m with John and Lloyd on the big robots. maybe if they were going to be more like Real Steel or Robot Jox then yes but can’t see that happening for many years to come yet.
The plastic tanks i prefer as i have had several problems with the resin ones especially with the tracks not fitting on the model so having to file down the sides of the tank just to fit the tracks.
Painting tutorials skin tones and highlights and eyes would be great.
My first coment at Beasts of War and as one rasied on Battletech I’m 110% on Justins side! Do not let them get you down mate! They (John & Lloyed) clearly haven’t got your capacity for realising awsomeness 😉 And I have to say it almost made me sad to hear Lloyds bulling way. I get your friend’s and you guys have a way of talking to eachother but sometimes it not cool how spitefull Justin is attacked for just being him self. I’m sorry if I’m a bit soft now but it can leave me with a bitter taste in my mouth sometimes after watching a weekender or an xlbs. You should seriosly look at how you portray some of your atitudes towards eachother in some of your clips/videos. And don’t get me wrong I love banter and a vivid dialog, it just can go overboard sometimes. But part from that, keep up the good work and John, I’d (seriosly now!) would easaly pay for a 4 hour dvd of you talking about tanks! (And so would most outhers also). Don’t let anybody (including you self 😉 ) convince you of anything els. Your Dust videos are pure gold and one of the main reasons I’m a backer of Beasts of war!
As someone new to BoW and Backstage, I have to say that I’ve also picked up on Justin being treated pretty harshly at times (more than the normal piss take between mates). Sure, Justin says some silly things at times, but he comes across as the BoW team’s whipping boy. Maybe that’s the dynamic between friends, but it sticks out like a sore thumb on video.
Having just finished watching the XLBS, I don’t think Justin was whipped as much as usual (except for a couple of snidey remarks from John).
Me and Justin go waaaaaaaay back. Long before BoW was around. Yeah you are right though. I should (and will) pull back on the remarks.
I have a mate from Belfast and from what him and his mates are like I get the feeling that it maybe even more of a thing in Northern Ireland than it is in England to take the piss out of your mates(correct me if I’m wrong) Plus he does give it back on occasion..go Justin!!
I like the idea of giants robots, but still there is a lot to be done-researched in order to enjoy a match between robots
Got to go with Lloyd and John on the robots.
Looking forward to Myth week. I finally have my stuff now – I am based in the UK – and would like to see a play-through on BoW.
As an aside, please don’t spend so long talking about the minutiae of tank details. For those of us that just thinks tanks are fun but do not care what serial number they had or which sort of exhaust pipe, it ain’t much fun.
Sorry dude. I was trying my best to hold back. 🙂 But on the flip side, I do get told off for not mentioning some things
I struggle with highlighting red? Is there a painting tutorial for that?
Also can we expect another “gaming outside” road-trip? The funniest episode I’ve seen.
I prefer the plastic tank kit. It looks a lot more detailed but easy enough to build.
Great show I would go for the Plastic Tank
Happy Sunday.
Great news that Romain is going to more painting guides but why all virtually naked women for this? Can we not some none human miniatures for some of the skin tone displays.
I don’t think it’s anything sinister. I believe the set was chosen as they are a set of quite similar models so the final effect will be almost all down to the painting rather than the sculpt.
It’s one of those moments where we’ll have to see if the tutorial works.
Don’t worry, we’ll have men as well… But this kit was really gorgeous, so it’ll be a treat !
Besides, there is nothing wrong with nude women. Or men. Or anything, really.
Thanks guys you have put any worries i had to rest. Looking forward to it even more now.
I would love Level 7: Omega Protocol.
You guys went on a bit too much about the 1 to 1 war gaming crap.
Instead of paintballs what about lasers (low intensity) and receivers that shut bits of your mech down when hit like the mini tank games you can get. At least you wouldn’t have to clean the buggers up after a game!!
I think Lloyd embodied his own comments this weekender, boring and unexcited, pacing would be nice, but you made your comment about an idea, made it quite clear you are not willing to move from it, or really discuss about it and then dragged it for 15 more minutes let alone shoving it wherever you could after the topic moved on, really not exciting and quite boring.
I feel we got it from the very first minute.
Now as far as the idea goes, I am not sure it has merit, for what it is a “gladiatorial” style game it will always be too risky for it to happen with real pilots inside and if you go RC why bother with big expensive mechs? and not something small and less expensive? of course that is what Robowars (correct name?) did and it had quite a following.
moving on AI is really uncharted territory, I am really skeptical we can create AI because frankly we ourselves do not know what “real” intelligence is, or how feelings and emotions work, an AI is a nebulous concept that is vaguely registered on the back of our brains, essentially people expect a “human” that can think faster be more connected to a clouded network and embody the worst aspects of our culture.
At the present, we have a really hard time making robots survive outside a lab, things we take for granted are not easy for them, such as spatial awareness and random data processing, or pattern recognition, making something that can actually think of itself is really really far away let alone one that can do so and “exist” in the real world, once we do so, its a big unknown question how it will behave, how was it brought up? what its canvas was? how was its education? does it have feelings? is it social? what was its purpose and why would we create it really? because AI now that it is unobtainable seems an interesting thing, but once we reach the level of sophistication to create one would we need it for something other than a scientific experiment, a curiosity? would it serve a purpose that “mindless” robots could not perform?
Now I really enjoyed the discussion about Representation and Replica, one of the most inspired discussions you had and one that could touch many things in wargaming from design, rules, background, to the models and everything else, this is what I would love to see been discussed in more depth, maybe in a designers studio or as an organised community discussion.
Closing, I hope I am not sure how many of us have got their Myth pledges and how many of those that did managed to actually go through the contents of the pledge yet, maybe it is something to ask next week.
Great vid, thanks
Wouldn’t 1:1 scale wargaming just be war? Just for the record I think Lloyd is realistic and Justin is just dreaming.
Happy Sunday!
great show ! can you guys do a bolt action tank wars bat rep ??
For the record I’m against giant paintballing robots
I think the plastic tank kits look brilliant
Great show guys
Can you ever have enough tanks
Resin models for me. They match the figurines for “heroic scale” where details are just a little out of proportion. Then washes and outlining bring those details out so that it feels more contrasted and alive on the table.
sendme thelevel 7game 🙂 great showlove youguys
Crazy weekender guys. Much as my inner Geek wants to agree with Justin on the full scale robots, i’m afraid Lloyd is right, it would be disappointing. Stick with the mini plastic!
Good stuff if a little bit ranty. Steady Lloyd
Megabot, looks totally boring, sorry Justin.
Kudos to Justin for sitting there and putting up with Lloyd’s ranting. I’d have walked away after the first 5 mins.
I can see why giant mechs fighting would appeal to some. There are piloted walking machines around. For example there’s the Mantis which is a 6 legged machine. So merging the concept of robot fighting together with them means it’s probably a plausible idea, but can’t see it myself.
Afraid it doesn’t really appeal to me..
Actually been thinking about picking up Omega Protocol for a good while, but haven’t been quite able to bring myself to pull the trigger. Might as well toss in.
great show guys
I come more from the scale model side of the hobby so the plastic tank looks more interesting to me. Also, I didn’t get in on Myth, but I’m looking forward to seeing Myth week so that I can decide if it’s worth looking into. Your theme weeks are always a great way of introducing myself to new things. Finally, the mech kickstarter does look boring.
Erm, so 1:1 scale wargame you play like, laser quest, paintball and the airgun crowd…. and the re-enactment societies.
Sure there’s a market for si-fi wargaming but that might be a bit too niche, then again there is the fun park you can drive a JCB around.
Good show guys. Lots of interresting stuff. About the robot thing well, i love giant robots, but yeah it would be a boring battle.
The new box from warlord looks really good, and now i have a good reason to get in to bolt action: Tanks! or as we say around her in DK kampvogn. I love the discussion you had about the tanks and the company’s. Lots of good points about the difference between the tanks.
Im having trouble painting beards, and hair, so it look realistic.
Just tried the newest level 7 game. It was an awesome co op game, and very hard to beat, but great fun. So i was thinking about getting one of other Level 7 games, maybe i will get it hear =D
well that was like watching a puppy being kicked about even if the idea of megabots are a bit too ahead of its time
prefer plastic for large scale easier to convert models but resin for characters
Nice show. And Megabots looks awful, seriously bad. Level 7 oh yes! yes please.
I do prefer having plastic kits as oppose to resin kits, I suppose because I grew up with making airfix/matchbox kits as a young lad. So I am quite glad that there are more plastic kits coming out for 1:56th scale to be used with Bot Action, etc.
Justin – “What’s wrong with a little madness in the world?”
The answer: Hitler. 😀
Good luck to Warren and his new newborn !
1-1 wargaming? If only the tech was here now … sadly it is not. Virtual is the best you are going to get. That could actually happen tomorrow and no need to have an industrial center just to store and play with the thing.
Great prize for this weeks drawing…(and it all fits in a box!)
I’d rather have had him talk more about craters than continiously go on about how stupid the big robots are. 🙂
excited for Romains tutorials! flesh tones im really struggling with.
Great show. Love the plastic tanks less filing than on resin to get parts to fit together properly. Love Myth but it can be a challenge to play the first couple of times. They just released another rules update a couple weeks ago. I do agree the mega robots would be a silly investment as you are just paying for someone else’s toy. If I wanted to do something like this I’d invest in a robotics research project where I would have stock and possibly see a return on my investment.
These new Warlord tanks and the tank wars stuff might be enough to get in to bolt action. The strait up historical stuff isn’t my cup of tea, but this is tanks and tanks are cool!!
Go Lloyd, ruling the roost
Would love to see some Batman Miniatures Game coverage as am starting to get into that in my local player groups, having said that really happy with the amount of attention Bolt Action is getting as it is my game of choice. Not sure how I feel about 1 to 1 scale giant robot wargaming, is normal paintball just 1 to 1 scale infantry wargaming?
Looking forward to Roman coming back. Face detail, painting eyes etc would be good.
Megabots = Megafail 😉
Level 7 : Omega Protocol = Win
I find it very interesting how much this show changes when Warren gets a week off, not that I’m saying its better or worse but its definitely different!
I’ve been trying to avoid looking at the Robotech kickstarter because I cant afford to spend any more in between Mantic ones!
another brill show guys I do miss this when u miss a week
I’m a new Backstager and this is my first competition entry. Fingers crossed for some beginners luck!
The only problem I am having with myth is you not doing the Myth week, I have had my copy for 3 months already and even painted all the minis, It is for sale in most local stores near where I live and most kickstarter pledgers have already received it. 😉 come on we are all waiting for it.
The problem I have with plastic tanks is that they do not have mass (of You pick them up) but the plastic tanks sometimes do live better and are better fit modifications.
If you like a heavier feel in the models, you could add a cheap modelling clay inside the body as ballast.
Remain in one place for ages, cramped into a awkward position, and get covered in paint.
Sounds a little too close to painting my ceiling to me.
Warren we miss you….just to keep Justin under control….Big robot’s fighting ha!
Anyway love to win lvl 7, looks a nice board game, and just before xmas too, mmm.
More bolt action, agree with John, would love to see other manufacturers embracing the 1/56 scale for models.
I agree with Lloyd totally on the MegaBots kickstarter. Apart from it being an utterly boring premise for a tv programme, the tech just doesn’t exist yet for what they say they are trying to create. Patching in clips from various films shows that they have no real-world footage they can use to demonstrate that they can achieve what they say they can. Showing a paintball cannon is light-years away from having a heavy mechanical biped that can balance and walk, and 2 million dollars isn’t enough to create that biped.
Giant robots are sexy. At some point in the future they will happen, but not until the military has funded a working prototype. Until then, the nearest we will get to that excitement is Oculus Rift.
As for 1-to-1 wargaming, I don’t think can exist in a format that is anything like tabletop wargaming. At a 1-to-1 scale you are either roleplaying the generals (et al) giving the orders, or you are roleplaying the grunts on the ground. Only a couple of people can take the general’s roles, which means that the grunts are limited to roleplaying following orders and small scale skirmish tactics. At a large scale it would need computers and communication equipment, which then turns the generals’ experience into a computer wargame, which we already have.
This has to be one of the most entertaining Justin-baiting episodes we’ve had in ages. Plus on at least three occasions John made jokes that Justin did’t even realise had been made, no mind not get. Brilliant. Sorry Warren but in future you have to sit back and let Lloyd do the arguing more.
Would be good to get an easy tutorial on painting eyes.
some non metalic metal effect would be nice as a tut
Great show boys, thank you.
Blending of colors. going going from one color to another and make it look smooth
That’s about what I do in every tutorial in one way or another… You could consult the Technique Toolbox series, here on Beasts of War, to see if anything strikes your fancy, technique-wise… Then you would have a more specific idea about what technique to employ (among many) to blend tones together. There are. Many ways to achieve this ! 😉
The bit about comparing the kits was pretty interesting.
I hope its a bit more enjoyable for you than you made out there Justin 😉
Well at least there was a contest at the end.
The difference between wetblending and air brushing is about $300-$400 worth of equipment.
I prefer the plastic versions of the tanks, more parts but generally less issues with parts not fitting together.
Megabots no it’s just wrong will be to slow and boring if it was a bigger version of robot wars perhaps. The tanks look brilliant if the prices were similar then it’s down to personal taste I would be happy with either one.
With reg to the tanks, I prefer the plastic kit. I had to spend a long time filing the parts down due to the resin warping. The plastic kit, even though it has more bits, would be far easier.
yes 1/1 wargame boring
Good show guys 🙂
I think I’ve read that the Warlord/Italeri match-up is limited to 6 or 8 kits only. Which I think is a shame. I hope it’s successful enough that they decide to continue it and that other scale modelling companies get involved too.
For me, the biggest advantages of the plastic kits are ease of putting together (even if it’s more bits, they fit and glue together much more easily than resin) and scale (I think I’ve seen or read that the resin tanks are a slightly different scale to the infantry because it’s cheaper to make them a bit smaller than they ought to be).
I’m more interested in the early war period, and for understandable reasons they’ve been focussing on plastic kits for later period vehicles which were both more common in real life and are used in more commonly collected periods.
So I hope that the plastic experiment is successful enough that they produce many more tanks!
OOOOOOO Levele 7 Omega Protocol….. would be nice to win something for a change 🙂
With Lloyd on the fighting robots.
More bolt action tanks
Oh, for painting… Neither of these might be Romain’s thing but I’d like to see how to paint the wolsung buildings you’re using – they look really cool. And how to paint space marine power armour. Now, that might sound very basic, but I think it’s actually very hard to do to a good tabletop standard. If you just base colour it it’s easy, but doesn’t look great. If you spend hours building up layers and shades, it looks great, but takes ages. I’d like something in between – a relatively quick way to paint large smooth surfaces that don’t allow easy tecniques like drybrushing.
Also, I think Justin’s suggestion was good: cloaks are hard to paint, again because they’re large flat-ish surfaces that don’t take drybrushing.
I agree, painting armour to a good standard in a reasonable amount of time is not easy. Any technique to speed that up would be great. I don’t think it would just be limited to space marine power armour, any miniature with armour plates has the same issue.
Watching this episode drew me to a conclusion.
Justin role on the show is basically Beast of War’s equivalent of Alan Davis.
I enjoyed the show. Just like two regular guys and a idiot down the pub having a chat.
Keep them coming. How about leaving Warren out once a month.
Japan didnt build walking mech yet and 3 Jankee dream that can do it yep it will be epic fail Justin
While he’s doing flesh, make some tattoos!
Would definitely like to see Romain do a series of tips on painting and blending/highlighting the sort of NMM effect but with colour not metallics that you is prevalent on Infinity model armour and weapons. I guess it’s some sort of futuristic Kevlar or plastic and the ability to blend black, blue, grey, purple, red any colour etc but in a NMM sort of style is what I mean if that makes sense?
Hm… I’ll see what I can do !
Oh man, lots of things to comment on here and I’m on a smart phone so please excuse any typos…
On AI that is just a box with a speaker and a camera: Oh, they can be pretty evil! http://bit.ly/1wINA0g
On “three nerdy guys in a video”: Gotta dig the irony in that statement 😉
On Romain painting skin tones: Awesome, I should be getting my Arena Rex gladiators in a few weeks, plus I have a custom mini that needs a really pale flesh tone. Hopefully after those videos go out I will feel slightly less worried about screwing them up!
On what else Romain could paint: I would really like to see a video on implying different materials. For example if you have ten identical cloaks, how do you make one look like leather, one look like silk, one look like stone, one look like hessian, one look like plastic etc beyond colour choice? Is it simply an understanding the specular and diffuse properties of the material? Should you imply texture?
On Italeri making kits with Warlord: When this was first announced I was very excited.. not so much for the WW2 tanks because I have 2 for my 5 DCLI and I probably won’t get any more.. but if this turns out to be a successful venture I hope it leads to some modern 1/56 kits in the future.
Textures… So noted. I have already done sone leather, and some other cloth textures, but I understand what you mean… It should all be more easily accessible, in one series… Plus, there’s more I could do.
Cracking XLBS. Lloyd and John were 100% about the magabots but I do understand Justin’s optimism over the project.
Great Show.
Has Romain any tips on how to paint scars and tatoos ? Usually it s really hard to get thr right tones.
Maybe “Tank God” John and “Time Lord” Dave should introduce Justin to some re-enactors groups and he can get his 1to1 Bolt Action wargaming experience, without having to wait 50years.
And if they lend him some gear, it won’t cost him 5grand either.
Great show guys! With John and Lloyd on the robot subject, I mean, at least robotwars had cool movement, hammers, blades, flippers etc. 2 barely mobile walkers hammering each other with paintballs seems a bit kack to be honest. I did think Lloyd was a bit of a dog with a bone about it. He just wouldn’t let it go, and not only did he want everyone to know he didn’t like it, but he wanted to explain every detail of why it would suck hard. Which, although I found it highly entertaining, I can see why some people would get a bit bored of it.
The tanks, I like the plastic, I don’t know why, I like hero proportion etc on my sci-fi and fantasy, but I want realism on my historicals, one of the reasons I’ve held back on Bolt Action, I’m not sure of the bobble head infantry.
Romain, I would love to see tips on painting brown leather. I can do it, but making it look good just seems to be something out of my grasp, like I’m missing something.
I have done a few tutorials on leather before… I recommend the one on worn, textured leather done on a trollblood quiver…
Omega Supreme!
I’ll have that Level 7: Omega Protocol prize please 🙂
Have to say the premise of kickstarting an idea such as Megabots is fanciful in the extreme! Never going to happen based on crowdfunding alone – if there was an established formula / show already in place then it might have a chance (but at a greatly reduced cost), but it doesn’t….
I just don’t think that making a walking wire trash basket with a paint projectile cannon equals 1:1 wargaming. It sounds like a bunch of guys wanting to see mechwarrior in real life, and let’s face it, it wouldn’t be as much fun without the carnage.
Hey guys, the show was… interesting.
A little off topic?
I can understand Justins enthusiasm for true mech battles, but the level of tech involved here doesn’t inspire that level of enthusiasm in me. Maybe if (big if) they could get a hold of something like that US military level tech, and have them fight against each other, no human remote controls.
An interesting conversation of replica vs. representation, the difference is clear when you have them side by side.
Romain and skin tones can only be a good thing, I look forward to it inmmensly!
Thanks again for another great XLBS.
Great show as usual guys, really loved seeing the comparison between the Resin and Plastic tank for Bolt Action.
1 to 1 scale wargaming…. not so interesting. I’ve always loved Dream Pod 9’s Heavy Gear, and agree with Lloyd that is probably the best bang for your buck in terms of fun.
As for the new plastic wargaming tanks from Warlord/Italeri, I think they are a fantastic option for those who want a little more detail. But for the most part personal preference will be the deciding factor for most people.
I already chose my side when I backed HGB without knowing there were sides to choose from 🙂
that is one fun game
Weekender was 1 hour and 23 min. Free
XLBS was 45 min…Not Free….
Love ya mean it, but shouldnt this be the other way around?
EXCELLENT non the less, just missed you Warren!!
Free = 1 hr 23 mins
Paid for = 2hrs 8mins
A very entertaining show like the representation vs replica discussion and it was interesting to see the close up comparisons between the resin and plastic panthers.
I agree with Lloyd on the whole mech thing, BUT im with Justin on the weight of miniatures, i like to feel the weight of something made of metal in my hand when i play. Plastic has its advantages but im always left with it feeling a bit ‘cheap’ , even Johns points on metal barrels would help.
I NEED Level 7 Omega Protocol Its a game on my list and I just haven’t been in a position to get it so I say give it to me 🙂 (Myth is another on I really want too – love the AI side of Myth haven’t seen that since Warhammer Quest. Can you use Myth as a Framework for an ongoing RPG? Really looking forward to Myth week)
I’m looking forward to seeing obotech on the tabletop. Kingdom Death …the skin tips should be great and on those minis wow. Blue effects. Yes pls. Differentiating them (blue glows) would be a great part of the tips. I think how to get white points on a model and where to place would be great.
NOW… I’m so over watching you guys slag each other off …its not entertaining or intellectual or even …funny. So I couldn’t care less. LOL. I feel dirty watching you guys get stuck into Justin HAH. More gaming commentary vs ranting is myt vote.
There is a new area I think in gaming where there are people who favour the modeling painting hobby over the game on the table side. They like both but favour the modeling side. I think thats a good thing.
Shan
Happy Monday !! (yeah, I wasn’t here yeasterday !) ^_^
Just thought of something you could cover in the painting tutorials – doing makeup on female minis.
Also a fan of plastic!
I always struggled with metal miniatures … not sure I’ve had many resin ones.
Another excellent show, I really think Lloyd thrives in these videos without Warren.
Thinking of the life sized mech. I think they have gone the wrong route Rather than the paint-ball route they should have gone the laser tag route. They could have had small sensors that took out individual weapon systems for 30 seconds (While the Mech auto repair kicked in) certain sensors could have stopped a leg moving or taken the operators cross-hairs offline for 30 seconds when enough hits had been accumulated a red light flashes and the mech stops. Who would not want to go to a laser tag to see if they could stop the mech getting to an objective. Also just for Lloyd they could use a lot of plastic in the Mech rather than metal
I’ve seen a few posts about going the laser tag route and I think that you guys are right, it would be much better. Especially if like you say above it could deactivate systems etc.
That would give commentators something to talk about rather than looking at a mech covered in paint, I mean what do you say other than “hey their arm is covered in even more paint”.
The “laser tag” is a good idea, not least because the tech for that has been around for 18+ years in consumer form (anyone remember the old Lazer Tag set – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdSb3fh9Ens). Damage could be represented by pyrotechnics and panels blowing off, all with the benefit of not wrecking the robots.
The stumbled block (literally) is that they can’t build large mech’s that can balance and walk. However……tracked robots would eliminate that problem entirely. If they’d had giant tracked robots in the kickstarter it would have been more believable, and they wouldn’t have had to resort to sticking loads of film clips in.
Looking forward to more Romain videos. As something I would like to see: Painting red hair (both ginger and actual bright red).
John, if you want some plastic panthers without zimmerit, these look great: http://www.rubiconmodels.com
Not sure how they measure up to reality though. Would be nice to see you do an unboxing.
For me NMM and realistic skin tones covers a great deal of ground. High contrast on one side vs soft, smooth blending on the other.
Otherwise it would be how to speed paint thousands of Flames infantry… I had to pick Soviets!
great show …..wish i had a french painter chained up in the basement 😉
Sorry Justin, the tech just isn’t there to make these robots work any time soon.
Those are some hot tanks from Italeri, pity I don’t have the time and money to get into another system!
Screw giant robots fighting robots, stick one robot against a bunch of people. Put targets on the robot that all need to be hit for it to be destroyed!!
I’d like painting ER to actually put on here. Heard about it, no videos were there

Good show as always thanks guys
I like plastic, it’s easy to work with and mess about with. Also good job this weekend lads.
I’d like maybe YOUR opinion on how the classes work so people could say “that’s how we should/ would play it”
I would like to see how Romain does freehand logos or tattoos.
Lloyd, you couldnt possibly be anymore anti-Justins-enthusiasm 😛 good show guys!
can’t wait for Myth week. have been painting up my minis
Skin tone painting tutorials using Kingdom Death pinup models. Well, that’s a series that I won’t be watching while at work. 😉
Great show
Guys you don’t need to pick it – your Level 7 winner is right here 🙂
Have been playing BA for just over a year now and since Tank War arrived I’ve been umming- and-arring about what army to go for in an armoured platoon (already have US Airborne infantry platoon). Am now quite tempted y a Panther platoon, but torn between the plastic and the resin! 😀
And, Justin…… No……. just NO
Pleasure as always guys 😉
Probably too late to the party, but nevertheless, two points:
Firstly, on the subject of Romain’s painting tutorials — as he’s mentioned in these comments, there are a number of interesting subjects (e.g. painting different kinds of leather) scattered through different tutorials. It might be useful to have a list of these materials & techniques, organized by the material you’re trying to mimic (since that’s presumably what people who are trying to solve a particular problem would be looking by?); and it would be even better with links to jump to the appropriate point in the relevant video. It might be the kind of tedious thing you can convince the community to do? 😉
Also, has he covered iridescence, how to do it and/or how to fake it?
Secondly, on the subject of the dangers of A.I. — there’s an assumption that being hosted by a computer would give you a native facility with and control over other computers. Given how few things made of meat obey my commands (random animals, workmates, my wife), despite my intelligence being primarily hosted on meat, we may be overestimating the dangers. Also, corporations are essentially autonomous non-human people (they have to be “people” to be allowed to own stuff) that we live with, and they haven’t managed to kill us yet. And there’s no reason to think that A.I. is likely to be more innately hostile to us than the children of people we’re not related to — I mean, we’re competing with those kids for jobs, money, and food, whereas nothing on my laptop has ever tried to steal the last of my butter chicken, unlike certain people made of meat I could name. And there’s a bunch of assumptions about motivations that are sneaking in here, since there’s nothing in “intelligence” that directly implies “self-interest” or “self-preservation”.
Anyway, the take-away is meant to be — rich, smart people can still say dumb things that sound clever in a sound-bite. 🙂
Er, the list of things made of meat was meant to be a list of things that *don’t* obey, not of things that do. Just in case someone on the list reads it. 😉
I got my MYTH stuff last stuff here in Finland, so the European deliveries are going fine.
Truth be told, I got onboard the Kickstarter because in the end it contained a huge amount of extra miniatures. The standard set included in the box looks like a joke compared to all the extras I got.
The models look pretty good, they seem to done in a resin similar to what Mantic uses. Definitely not soft crappy boardgame pieces like some other games (*cough* Zombicide *cough*).
They comes pre-assembled, which I am not a huge fan of as I’ll probably have to pull them apart to clean them properly before painting. But not a gazillion pieces with sub-millimeter contact points to assemble either, like some other games (*cough* Alabaster *cough*).
…And like pretty much everything else I’ve got from Kickstarter, it goes to the giant pile of unpainted minis and likely gets lost there…
Cracking show guys
Does John know if they are doing a plastic Churchill for Bolt Action; fingers crossed that they will because it’s my favorite of the British armored vehicles?
Also have you done an un-boxing Of Level 7, because from the quick look on the back of the box this looks very good?
Brill weekenders love the stuff about tanks.
Enjoyed the show! Even with the robot banter. I really am starting to like the look of Bolt Action and find myself wanting to play. My husband and son are well versed on Tanks, we did play World of Tanks online and I loved that game, and was actually where I started to understand the difference between British tanks, American tanks etc etc – because in playing this game it started tons of WWII conversations between us. I still feel like I would be the underdog, as I am with many of our games we play lol But I am catching up! Looking forward to watching the more detailed videos on Bolt Action.
Have a great week!
Level 7 Omega Protocol. I still don’t understand why o’ why they used soft bendy plastic for that more than awesome game. and why they are not releasing addons…
Omega Protocol is a great game, a scifi dungeon crawler with a inovative resource menagement mechanic, a must have.
I sometimes feel bad for Justin. Seems like every time he says something everybody disagrees with him.
Stuff the robots bring on more tanks from italeria etc. oh and I have just made my letter box level 7 size, u never know lol
Looking forward to the 3 Colours Up tips, skin tones is an area I feel I need to improve in my painting.
Sorry Justin but I think I have to agree with Lloyd I don’t think a full size mech is going to do it just yet, I also think its a bit ridiculous to ask somebody to pledge a huge amount of money to just pilot one these, in fact I’m not sure if this kind of project should even be on Kickstarter.
Still waiting to justify buying level 7 financially over here so winning this week would be top!
I would rather have a mech simulator than a real life one. Let’s face it the technology isn’t there for us to have mechs that are as flashy as the ones that are in anime. Today’s game devs could build a mech simulator much more easily than today’s engineers can build a real one. Besides if I had a giant robot, I would want to go on a destructive rampage with it.
When it comes to painting tips some help with Horses would be very much appreciated.
Awesome!
Painting decent looking eyes are something I’ve always struggled with and think would make a good topic for painting tips.
Level 7 looks awesome too, would love a copy.
Looking forward to more about airbrush.
Look Lads
If you want to do one to one Wargaming, you don’t need big mad half baked robots or mechs to do it. Here’s my idea which I would love to see Lloyd and Justin act out. The crux of it is you give them both a big pugil sticks (like the ones they used to use on the show Gladiators) and one D6 each. The players roll to see who goes first – highest score decides. Then player one rolls the D6 – the number they roll = the number of actual hits they inflict with the stick on the other player. When done, player two then repeats the actions for their roll. You can either go for a set number of turns, or until one of the players falls unconscious / needs to go to Casualty.
I wanna win!
Idea for painting tips: Show how to paint silk stockings, like you see on some of the Infinity Dire Foes minis. So thin cloth stretched over skintone. How do you blend in two very different colors properly. The Kindom Death minis should be perfect for that.
Hope its not too late to enter. I’d love a copy of level 7 omega protocol!
God almighty, Does Warren REALLY ahve to make anything he disagrees with into a shouting match? I joined backstage recently because i enjoy the content in general, But warrens tendencey to go overbearing and snide for what feels like hours needs to get toned down a notch or two. It is grating on my nerves.
@pendraeg I don’t believe I was even in this episode mate! :S
I am very soorry man, i wrote warren, i meant Lloyd, wrong brother.
And now the smug smile disappears from @lloyd‘s face he he he 😀
And he’s doubly insulted because you mixed us up lol 😉
@pendraeg Yup, just checked, I definitely wasn’t in it! 😉
