Weekender was late but the XLBS was early!! It all evens out in the end! Thanks for another great episode guys!
Great show. luv that you show verious games and not just GW. this is how i find out about other game systems this is were i got into Flames of War, Bolt Action, Dropzone Commander and Infinity.
feed the week sounds pretty good. I’m glad BoW support all the games companies. Bolt Action themed week? but Dropzone commander themed week for sure.
Great work guys! I like the mid-week vlog i hope it catches on.
The feed the week idea while nice i think in the end it’ll muddy the water but i have been wrong before.
Aww you trust me 😀 worst mistake you’ve ever made.
I hope for a Malifaux week as the 2nd edition is out now
I cry in desperation for a malifaux week!
The martian game you’re thinking of Warren is Destroy All Human! 😉
BoW Ben
I haven’t missed the 40k stuff at all… I used to listen to quite a few 40k podcasts, but I ended up dropping all but one because they were all essentially the same: a new codex comes out and they go through all the rule changes, new units and whatnot… Yawn!
How about picking a subject that is not backed by a major release/company and investigating what to use for rules, where to get figures etc?
I don’t watch many of the themed weeks, I prefer the more dripfeed approach taken with things FoW and DB, but when I have dropped in on one the presenters have often seemed underprepared for the video. The format tends to be them leafing through the rulebook/army book and ad hoc discussing what’s on each page. A longer lead in time for more prep would definitely get my vote. I’d much prefer to see videos in which the bulk of what’s going to be talked about has already been worked out and is in a running order. And whilst I’ll still probably not watch any GW themed weeks as I don’t play their games, I’d probably watch most of the Feed the Week vids.
Another excellent set of shows. Warren/Justin/Lloyd is up there with Warren/Justin/Stu as the best set of presenters for the show. To dredge up the old issue of trailers and talking about non-tabletop stuff. We’ve had movie talk the past two weeks and even a trailer last week but it’s worked really well. The issue was never so much about showing trailers, it was about showing trailers in lieu of actual content. I may have said this once or twice before, but The Weekender works best when it’s like hanging out with a bunch of your gaming buddies. As long as the conversation never steers too far from gaming for too long, conversational excursus works well (as long as the presenters make the conversation engaging). Warren’s new game thingy from these last two weeks are a good example. It works not because of the games, but because it feels like you’re in there having a chat about games.
I think we should all be at the point where were over delays in delivering on KS pledges. More often than not a minis KS runs over its estimated time. There are so many variables that can’t be accounted for prior to launching the campaign that a delay should be expected. You could argue that the creators should a few months onto the estimated delivery time cover themselves but the problem with that is, every month you add on, some potential backers will self-select out because they don’t want to wait that long. Especially as they’ll be assuming it’ll be later than that anyway.
CMoN are running a very interesting KS at the moment with WoK. It was them what blew the bloody doors off KS with Zombicide and set the template for what a successful KS campaign should (with respect to Dark Potential). They’re taking a different tack with WoK and not offering loads of stretch goals for new minis which are either free or at a deep discount, most of which are just concept art and are slated for a future wave of releases. They’re also allowing people to hop on for a $1 and then buy whatever they want when the pledge manager comes out. The upshot is the campaign will not finish with a mega amount of money. It may even be the least successful campaign CMoN have ran for a KS that includes minis (which I believe Cadwallon did not). What it does mean is they haven’t committed themselves to loads of new product, there shouldn’t be much additional tooling to do, so costs will be a lot lower than they would usually be. And all the additional purchases pledgers make on the PM (which like I say, CMoN have practically invited everyone to do instead of maxing out their pledge in the campaign) will not unlock any stretch goals, so a big chunk of money will be raised that won’t have to spent on tooling new minis. Plus Paypal’s fees are lower than KS/Amazons so CMoN’s cut of the money is greater on the PM than on KS. It may even mean the pledges will ship on time as there’s not much new stuff to sculpt and tool. CMoN may have moved ahead of the curve again.
And it’s disappointing, if not surprising, to hear that GW are responsible for curtailing the content of their products. I tend to find myself in the position of defending GW but in this case I think they’ve got this one wrong. Controlling the message is great but having genuine gamers with genuine enthusiasm for the product, even if the approach is sometimes critical, only helps generate interest in the games.
oooh. Dropzone commander week does sound very good. Looking forward to that
another fab weekender lads! I know there are threads addressing this sort of thing but as far as I’m concerned, themed weeks are a great way to exploit a new release to showcase something new, something different, say Malifaux or FoW for example (‘nam week was awesome). cover GW, but to be honest, its gonna happen anyway no matter what (n that’s no disrespect to GW at all). The balance Beasts of War has is great, and its that balance, that excitement about all sorts of different things that makes stuff like the weekender and XLBS so entertaining in the first place! And btw, you think there’s gonna be special rules for anal probes and other weird weaponry? haha
Anal probes has got to make it into Mars Attacks!!!
Seconded ! 🙂
OMG! yes lol

Sorry, I’ll try that again.
So freaky I was thinking about the Big Trak on Saturday and trying to explain it to my wife lol. Anyone remember the BBC micro turtle thing that was similar but used to draw with a pen attached?
there are loads of 20mm metal historical miniature that never get covered any place so might be nice to see that as a different direction
and the scale is very popular
and probably made the hobby what it is today
Big trak, they are making them again now.
Enjoyed the show, I have to say, I did like the ‘6th edition week’ you all did when 40k launched last year, and I did enjoy Darrel’s unboxings and things, but I can’t say I’ve missed the GW coverage much, which probably says far more about GW’s current product than it does about BoW in general I should think, and coming from a customer from the days of 2nd edition who has kids getting interested in miniatures, it should sound a big warning siren to their marketing dept.
I’ve said it before, but up until this month, the Deathwing Terminator box has been the only release during 6th I have thought was a great buy, because they are truly wonderful models with hundreds of variations possible.
After this month I would add in the new tac squad, vanguard box and sternguard box, I think they are all great products, even if the prices are a bit out there, I would have added the new librarian if the price was not in the realms of fantasy it is, great model but I will never ever buy it at £18. The centurions I add to the god awful chaos releases and the big for the sake of being big stuff eldar and tau got as being things that just have no appeal to me at all, although I am sure they are popular with some.
Having said that, I would love to see more coverage of GW stuff, just as I would love to see more content for dreadball (which I dont play but really enjoyed the shows), Bolt Action (which I really like) and anything else, I’d love to see a malifaux showcase when 2nd edition comes out, the local gaming group in my new location play that and its something I’m trying to get to grips with, I always love the infinity content, indeed, from someone with 20 years of GW gaming behind him, I fond the infinity pieces the best ones you do, and that is because, Ronnie aside, the Corvus Belli guys show so much more enthusiasm for their own games than anyone else just want to support them. I’m really looking forward to deadzone, I didnt kickstarter it, not really kept up with what has been going on but in my head its a spiritual successor to Necromunda, which is my favourite miniature game of all time, if its even half as good I will spend a fortune on it, I’d love to see plenty of content on that.
I also want to say I’ve enjoyed the latest warmahordes series, I’ve never played the game but the two guys are very well informed and clearly love the game and despite it not being a game I’m interested in it still makes a great video, I think recruiting the local experts has been one of the great benefits of the move to the UK for me as a viewer, although I do miss andy and darrell on the show.
Malifaux Week would be awsome
A friend of me, introduced me to “On The Table” and that’s how I got to become a backstager years ago. The weekender and weekender XLBS are even more like sitting dow with some friends and getting involved what they like to play, watch on TV or in cinema or even read. It’s always related or connects to our hobby, as we are war gamers and like to collect miniatures in one or the other or maybe all the systems 😉 In my opinion you’re doing a great job so far! I appreciate your plans to interact even more with the community. Even if it’s sometimes not so easy to get involved for me – ’cause I’m not a english native speaker it takes a lot more time to get my thoughts written down – it is really cool to get connected to people around the world via your platform. Thanks so far, and keep on moving your way.
This.. this right here. I look forward to watching the shows and yes, it really does feel like sitting down with people I really know.
Can’t agree with you guys and other comments more – in fact I don’t think you go far enough and are remarkably level-headed, professional and diplomatic – in marked contrast to the other party concerned. There are always going to be those crying out for more GW weighted coverage (it is huge and hugely successful of course) but there are a myriad of sources for GW only and heavily GW dominated coverage throughout the internet to satisfy those needs exclusively. I think for me at least you get the balance right.
IMHO it is your balanced and well-considered coverage of the hobby as a whole which makes me value your opinions and your content enough to commit financially as a backstager. Personally I have very little interest in GW systems – I like some of the models enough to buy second hand and proxy and sometimes I read WD for ideas and painting tips, but GW coverage on the site has no interest for me. BUT others love it so of course it is quite rightly a big part of what you do.
I left GW 15 years ago when I left the hobby the first time and whilst I admire their achievement and will be eternally grateful to them for starting me off, our paths diverged a long time ago – and sadly I think we’re not meeting again. It was other games and other companies that brought me back and these little guys are as important in my eyes to the future of the hobby than a behemoth (again IMHO they are more so).
I have been introduced to so many great games and companies and some inspirational people through your work (including you guys), and without you sadly many of them would never get the attention they deserve from hobbyists. You do an incredible job for the hobby as a whole.
Sometimes I think we forget that It’s bigger than GW…and so are you.
Guys I’ve just watched the weekender and do s back to back and it’s great. I’m bed bound at the moment because I have done my back in and I’m spending the time catching up on bow coverage.
get well soon!
We have enough bleeps, please do not start grinding.
Before BoW, I really didn’t understand or realize just how many other mass market miniature games/games makers were out there. In the time I have been a member, I have never felt that BoW was any less for not doing more with GW products. That said, I applaud your inclusiveness of all parts of our hobby even when there is some strife with individual companies. I really do think that a way to be.
I also find quite a bit of value in being ‘included’ in the ‘doings’ of BoW. You sharing with us information ‘first’ so to speak. Including the Backstagers in the sausage making as it were of where Beasts is going and how you are getting there. Allowing Backstage to have valued input in the process, however limited it may be, is a strength of character rarely if ever shown by other major gaming/game review forum website. You are doing great.
I’m glad that you guys give so much coverage to other games than 40k.
You guys introduced me to flames of war, warmahordes, DZC and probably many more in the futur and I thank you. Not sure my GF or wallet are happy about this, but you guys made me a happier person. Thanks
As much as I love GW games, you guys have broadened my gaming horizons and I thank you for that. Will there be a weekender next week what with Warren and Dave having a crack at the FoW GT?
Good show, I’m happy with the varied content of the shows, whether its video games, movies or just war/board gaming. So keep up the good work..
Meant to say, I’m just a casual 40k player, but I love seeing all the coverage of other systems. I may not be playing them (yet), but I enjoy hearing about them as much as I would 40k, would get boring being a one system site.
Inheritance update??
Happy Sunday to you too
I’ve got to say Beasts of War has become an integral part of my wargaming world and you are directly responsible for me taking quite a few new game systems.
Feed the week sounds great. It will be good to see how that develops.
Those story dice look fun. I reckon they would be good for laugh with us bigger kids with a few beers inside.
What do you think to doing a week for several games not to much known like WARGODS OF AEGYPTUS WARGODS OF Olympus Brushfire and Drake: The Dragon Wargame
I have the first two of those, would love to see some coverage of them. Maybe an “Off the Beaten Track” kinda video series which dips into lesser known games.
Good idea
There are a lot of good But not well known systems
Another show for backstagers would be great, as would a Space Marine themed week.
I understand that GW are the reason that BoW have struggled with 40K material over the past few weeks, but please don’t give up on 40K as it’s still a fantastic game, even if GW are not a fantastic company.
The increased presence of historical games amongst others gives this site a very unique balance when compared to anything else on line or printed.
Loved your recent adventures Warren into WWII and Vietnam. Showing someone starting out as complete novice in any game is great viewing especially for someone contemplating stepping out from their comfort zone and trying something new.
I for one am glad about the lack of 40k but I of course understand that there are many fans of the game and they should get coverage they like as much as I do.
I have been really enjoying the demo games of late and have been introduced to many new games due to this coverage. I also have enjoyed the battle reports, so my simple message is – carry on guys you’re doing a great job!
If I could produce 1 suggestion it would be see some more games featuring BOWers playing against each other- full 4 player spartacus games (the demo was excellent), coverage of the journeyman leagues, a full game showcasing the game of the week etc.
Keep up the good work guys, excellent as ever. Liking the fact that backstagers are getting more stuff of late, definitely worth the pennies. Liked the midweek vlog.
And keep up the abuse about the centurions and lord of skulls. They deserve it 🙂
I would like to help with Feed the Week. I’ve had a little experience with talking with game companies. For 40k I have picked up the new sternguard and vanguard. For WM/H I have Butcher Unleashed and live a few states away from PP.
I joined BoW for the 40k coverage. I’m now shelving competitive 40k, to focus on dropzone commander! So, I vote for DZC week 🙂 Drag Dave from Hawk out from whatever nook he’s hiding in designing the resistance faction, and chain him to your filming desk until he blabs all his new plans. Also, please ask him if he’s going to put the high density plastic moulds he’s already shelled out for for the starter kit to use making boxed-sets of plastic starter armies? Because those would sell really well too!
Anyway, TBH, I don’t miss the 40k stuff. I listen to the independent characters podcast from time to time, and that does the job (not that i’d shout them $6 for their coverage).
I’d be interested in hearing about what the deal is with GW in more detail. Did they just shut down access to people outside GW to pre-release details? Or was it more specifically that they didn’t like the criticism you guys gave them (which TBH, was more than reasonable, especially given what others have said)?
It seems more and more that GW is withdrawing from the public/their supporters. They’ve cut out independent stockists that got them started in markets, they’ve price gouged us Aussies for three years (and imported it back to the UK with the new C:SM releases) and just generally turned their back on people by shutting down any public discourse they can. I remember they used to have public forums, etc, and it all died a horrible death.
Anyway, I used to be pretty “pro” GW, but it was more out of hope than anything else. Hope that they’d stop abusing such a wonderful back-story and actually treat the IP and their customers with respect. Well, roll on the buyout I say!
I also wanted to say, I really enjoy the more laid back XLBS and Vlog stuff for backstagers.
There’s nothing like coming in monday morning to work, and watching the XLBS 🙂 Warren’s over the top enthusiasm makes monday mornings much easier to deal with!
I totally understand your position with the GW situation; I’m in exactly the same place. I started playing in 96 and aside from a year or so; it’s been my biggest passion. I loved the models, the game, the books, I was a complete fan boy and rightly so as it was a fantastic product. However, as the years have gone by and the prices have risen, paint pots have got smaller and more recently the “toy” kits have started to appear I’ve started to lose heart. Also, the acceleration in production has caused me concern, especially when the rules for my Wraithseer were superseded within a year and a half of purchasing a pricey Imperial Armour book. With Chaos, Dark Angels, Tau, Daemons, Eldar and Marines now all coming so quickly after the launch of Dark Vengeance, how soon will we be seeing these be revisited?
It’s also spread to other areas of the business as a whole now, with Black Library books becoming gradually more expensive; hardbacks, followed by large paperbacks, followed later by normal sized paperbacks just stinks of milking something for as much as can be gained. White Dwarf was revised to be bigger and better, yet for all its new bells and whistles, it is still a giant, overpriced advert, with self-gratifying reviews and very little content that can’t be seen online. What’s worse is that content that should and would make it better are being sold separately online as digital editions.
Maybe it’s all to pay for the countless law suits that are being filed? I’ll not get started on that but needless to say recent actions have left a sour taste in the mouth.
But my biggest upset in the way the company is being run is that youngsters today will miss out. I run a school Warhammer club and the most common reason for students not to attend is because they can’t afford it. This was reflected in our visit to School League a couple of years ago. The majority of the attendance was made up of boarding schools or schools from affluent areas; I’m not complaining about rich and poor, but it’s sad to see that this has now become an elite hobby and the hobby I loved growing up is now inaccessible to students from a poor North West town.
It’s sad to see something you hold so dearly start to die, but it is infuriating when that something is completely torn apart to make a quick buck. But like the Phoenix, games such as Dreadball, Dropzone Commander and Zombicide have risen to fill the hobby void and although they might never fill that GW sized space, the variety of different games won’t hold a monopoly and won’t let me down the way that GW have.
Sorry to rant folks, but if you’ve stayed until now, I’ll make my point. Thank you Beasts of War. Without you, I wouldn’t have found half of the games I’m now playing or am interested in playing, as well as introducing me to other networks such as TableTop. You’ve not only helped me, but the students that attend my school club now see that although GW is the only high street shop that they see with war games, it’s by no means the only option. Long live BoW, pledge for backstage if you can. These guys deserve it.
@roberto7
“I started playing in 96 and aside from a year or so; it’s been my biggest passion. I loved the models, the game, the books, I was a complete fan boy and rightly so as it was a fantastic product. I know exactly how you feel sir, it’s 20yrs since I started my first SM army, and now they bring us more expensive tac squads and characters, and don’t even get me started on Centurions. I do feel like the older generations of 40k players are being pushed away slightly by the new “transformer” kits (maybe just me) 🙂
Have to say though Forge World have been good at renewing my interest, the HH series has admittedly left a very large hole in the wallet (much to the wife’s disgust :)), and IA12 finally tempted me to build a new Minotaurs army.
More recently though, I’ve been converted to Bolt Action (thanks to the demo game vids from BoW) and am now busily painting up my Assault on Normandy starter set
So from me, bring on Bolt Action week, (and I may even foolishly put my hand up to volunteer for it) 🙂
You’ve pretty much articulated the difference in targeted consumer base tha GW and FW have respectively. I agree that the new plastic kits have much more of a child’s toy aesthetic, one of the advantages of switching to complex plastic kit productions for GW is that they can freely market them as toys, but there’s always been this differential. FW primarily exists to part older GW gamers from their disposable income.
Re: Themed Weeks – personally, I’d think they’re best when someone is doing them because they’ve thought it would be a cool idea; rather than linked to a specific release schedule. Particularly with GW releases, I tend to get or see most of the army books any codexes anyway so someone going through the book doesn’t add a whole lot. Something like Carnevale Week on the other hand was an awesome look at a game that I’d never really looked at before. Imagine something like Zombie Week where the whole week was about exploring all the cool different zombie games out there – that sort of stuff is excellent 🙂
I think a delayed themed week is a very good idea. And perhaps not just for GW releases. Many releases are accompanied by hype and speculation. After the dust has settled you might get a much better informed view with more in-depth information.
Although I don’t collect or play the game yet I’m looking forward to a Malifaux week. The miniatures look very good. And my only source of information so far is the quite baroque official site and a few gritty game demo’s on YouTube.
It’s sad GW takes itself too seriously and is resisting the growth of the hobby in general – you’d think if the hobby grows they would too & by serving as an example of what a fun, proactive & creative hobby this is they’d only get more business (possibly). I personally enjoy any 40k/Warhammer coverage simply because I can stick it on in the background while I’m painting or packing some minis and have an instant affinity for what’s being said, whereas over coverage is more demanding in that I’m often clueless about the games/factions, so I have to actively watch the coverage to get the best out of it.
This said I agree that BOW is great because of its diversity – 40k is still fun but it’s ceased being great quite a while ago.
I think themed weeks are great but not always mandatory for a release. I wouldn’t mind a more condensed show, perhaps split into parts that takes all the elements of a themed week into a one or two part show that each can be split up with breaks to help editing etc. Others may not like the breaks of course…
Whatever you decide to do I trust you guys to do your best and provide great content for the community – it’s why I’m still paying backstage even though I’ve been less vigilant in wargaming the past few months as other priorities take hold. It is us that should be thanking you 🙂
Now go and unleash the Vlog’s of War! (I’m trying to picture what a Vlog Beast looks like – some kind of demented demon straight from videodrome maybe?)
I personally could not be less arsed about your lack of GW coverage, when theres so much more interesting new stuff coming out over the next few months.
I don’t want to be that guy. But, I was coming to the channel mostly to watch 40k coverage. Regardless that I am playing a lot of other board/card games. I really like what you doing with the channel, however lack of coverage on GW games is affecting me and many people that I know.
We wish there was another channel that produce the content with the quality you do, but with more GW stuff. and if that would be a case, we will defiantly still visit your channel, but probably not as much.
We feel the same.
Great show as always gents, am a big 23 year fan of GW but most of us kinda know what handcuffs they put on sites and that’s a very sad thing. But I have to say I have enjoyed the past months on BOW showing me different systems and the general fun and love that people have for them and I think wargaming on a hole will become more and more popular as the years role on and I see BOW become a main stay site for this. As for the theme weeks for 40k I agree with the at least a month take care BOW
I agree with rickoshea.I would love to see a Bolt Action or Dropzone Commander week.
