They’re a bit stocky and stiff, for sure… I hope Privateer Press will give us better than that. then again, while it’s not the best PP can do, it’s still WAY better than Games Workshop’s worst… Even if GW has produced very beautiful pieces indeed.

While the sculpts themselves are a little bland, I quite like them….it helps meld with the theme that these are simple infantry an nothing fancy.
In game, MkII has totally transformed Winter Guard. In MkI you were hard pressed to use these guys. For the points they were hardly cheaper than Iron Fang Pikemen…and while the latter lacks a ranged attack, they also were FAR more effective in melee and quite a bit more survivable.
MkII applied a few subtle changes, a relative drop in cost and +1RAT (now RAT5). This made only a slight change in the unit, but it is when you couple the UA (and WA to a lesser degree) with the bonuses that Kovnik Joe brings along….they become a unit that is still rather squishy, packs a punch of Biblical proportions! The UA adds a touch of survivability by allowing the unit to buff it’s own DEF by +2. The only catch is that this is an order so you cannot run or charge at the same time.
When maxed out (full ten man unit, + UA and 3x WA) you can dish out an effective RAT21 Combined ranged attack that hits with an effective POW27! This is commonly called the Winter Guard Death Star! Add in things like Orsus’ Blood Rage feat for the extra damage dice and nearly every Warcaster in the game is easy pickings (against ARM16 you will score an average of 21 damage).
Kovnik Joe allows the unit to fire at separate targets as he can give the unit boosted attack rolls…..couple this with Grape Shot and you can wipe out entire flanks in a single round of fire.
In short, Winter Guard went from a novelty unit to being a truly fearsome frontline fighting machine. Just remember that they are still just as easily killed as before.
