    “Death, be not proud, though some have called thee Mighty and dreadful, for thou are not so;
For those whom thou think’st thou dost overthrow die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be, much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go, rest of their bones, and soul’s delivery.
Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men, and dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,
And poppy’ or charms can make us sleep as well and better than thy stroke; why swell’st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally, and death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.”

    (John Donne)

Ladles and Jellyspoons, I present myself! I have returned from the grave…[clanking of chains] Not really, but I had to spend a few days with my friends in hospital. The first three days were a bit rough, but after that it was quite nice. Lovely room with windows that open out into the grounds. There were heaps of Rabbits on the loose and a couple of Owls screetching about at night. I should have asked my dad to bring a bow and we could have had some good tucker.

I did miss you lot too. They would let me do this from my room last week – I asked several times!

The only bad thing was that I was forced to watch stuff that made my piss boil. I wished for the arms of Morphius, but alas, they never came. (‘I couldn’t sleep’ for the less educated) I did meet a very interesting Nurse call Karen. She is a ‘strange’ Christian, but one of the ones that follow the teachings of Peter. Another first for me. The inverted Crucifix gave it away – she didn’t look like a Satanist.

Anyhoo, on with the show. Read all of this waffle really carefully so as to not fall foul of me later. If you are easily offended or hard of thinking than please go any play somewhere else. I am too tired to argue with idiots…go play with yourself. Everyone else is free to join the gang (not Cult) and have a great time. If you have never taken the plunge before then why not? This is where it is at. Here you will learn the things that will change your life. However, you have to jump first…

Upon hitting the water, compose yourself, then make your “Pledge”. It can be anything gaming related: build, paint or play. Do them all if you are up to it, but whatever you decide have fun doing it. You don’t have to finish it to any timescale. No, in here ‘happiness is the road’. Post some pictures. I like pictures.

There are some questions for you to have a go at. Nothing heavy just to loosen the lips. This gets things started and then we all get to know each other a bit better. We try to keep it conversational. No text talk or using the word “basically” either.

    1. Terrain and terrain set-up. Do you just fling it together or does it have to look correct?

    2. I watched a video where they were showing off a starter-set. Are you a straight from the box kind of girl or do you buy a rulebook, a few minis, some other bits, then get going? What do you think about “starter-sets”?

    3. Did some reading to pass the time. Books to movies tend to not work very well, but is there any you like/love?

    4. Comedy sucks. Not all, but most. Your favourite double-act(s)?

It is expected that you accompany your endevours with only the best musical choices. No wuss rock. Write us a playlist so that we can take the piss or maybe discover some new choons. While you are here you can boast, plead, rant, tell a story of love and woe, make a joke, show a picture, or anything that might tickle us. You can ride as close to the wind as you like, but imagine you are having afternoon tea with my grandmother, and my Aunt Freda, and everything will be fine. I would have included my Aunt Stella, but she used to curse a blue streak…it was like being at a boiler stokers reunion when she was just cursing by herself.

Glasgow pub rules: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! If you need to make a better point then it is allowed, but don’t take the piss. I see everything…I am omniverous.

The sign explains it all. We are totally inclusive here. Everyone is equally worthless until proved otherwise. How fair is that?

There is only one real rule. This cannot be broken or transmuted. NO DICKS. Firms.

Are we ready clocks? Go to it.

I will try my best to stay upright this weekend, but I might need a few breaks to recharge the batteries. Now it is time for toast and pate. My first job is to disconnect my amplifier…it went ‘pop’.

(Salute 2016) who does it make you think of

This is what got me thinking about question 1. I looked and the first thing in my head was “Oriskany”.

First! But also a dick… I’m so confused. Pledges, pics, and answers to questions to follow. I have a test to write and a blog entry due at university. Grrrrrrr.

My take on the subject matter of the opening paragraph

Jellyspoons. I like it Were you game for some game?

I learned something knew about Saint Peter that’s for sure.

Fall ‘a chicken’ of you later?

    My pledge is:

    (1) Post pictures of models I completed last week
    (2) Finish my Grimmer Hammers from the Hobbit
    (3) Finish my Sons of Medusa Captain
    (4) Work on a friend’s Warhammer Underworlds warband
    (5) When I complete the above I will add more.

    1. Terrain and terrain set-up. Do you just fling it together or does it have to look correct?

Both. It needs to look correct but I hate when I hear a competitive or tournament player go ‘there that’s better we have one hill on each side and one set of trees and something in the middle.’ No, terrain is not there to be fair, for advantage, or for balance. Look at real battles in history: it is something there and part of the world around it. I mean, don’t get me wrong people build castles in tactical places, but it’s a great steaming load of crap if someone tries to make it even, fair, correct or (too) pretty. The world, life and war is crazy and chaotic. It isn’t memorable and will never stand out as a game. I can remember games where I seriously had to deal with disadvantageous terrain being better tests of tactics or being super disadvantageous before both sides and giving a very distinct visual spectavle.

    2. I watched a video where they were showing off a starter-set. Are you a straight from the box kind of girl or do you buy a rulebook, a few minis, some other bits, then get going? What do you think about “starter-sets”?

Both when the mood takes me, but to be fair with the last few sets I have assembled them as is. I like to do my own thing, but using GW as an example, most of their starter set stuff now tends to be mono post or buildable one way and not modular. While I do like to convert and kitbash I have not really indulged in that for some time.

I gave my Space Marines from Dark Imperium some Headswaps and I got a second set of Death Guard from Dark Imperium and modified them a bit here and there.

    3. Did some reading to pass the time. Books to movies tend to not work very well, but is there any you like/love?

I liked Michael Moorcocks books. I think he has a writing style with an enjoyable and bearable flow and pace. The Eternal Champion stuff is great: Elric, Corum, Hawkmoon…

Ive reread the hobbit a few times but not the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and I like GRRMs A Song of Fire and Ice. However I do not read as much as I used to. Even comic books I have not gone back to for some time.

Im annoyed at myself not because I gave a very ‘cookie cutter’ answer.

    4. Comedy sucks. Not all, but most. Your favourite double-act(s)?

Double acts on stage? Virtually none. I enjoyed Rick Mayall and Adrian Edmonson doing their Bottom tour years ago but nothing since. As for stand up I enjoy Jim Jefferies a lot. You should check out his Stand up specials on Netflix. Im afraid to post them here. Hannibal Buress is pretty good too.

    As for music:

It’s a pop song but its good, and the main artists story is pretty good. In short his career wasn’t taking off, picked up on a music or social media platform and got super popular. The record company then turned around and said it wasn’t really country (because there was a lot of rap elements) and it wasn’t eligible for rewards despite doing well in country charts (because as most people reckon the people reckon their main motivation was because he was black and it was racists in the industry behind the decision.

The single then got a full release and topped charts internationally after he called Billy Ray Cyrus on social media to join him redoing the track and the rest was history:

Ok, I’m back — after a test debacle. Don’t you just hate it when university tests have nothing to do with the material that was taught? I’m guessing I failed, but it’s Friday and I don’t care.

Pledge: finish up, and I do mean ‘finish up’ my battle boards. I just need to clean up the ‘cladding’, for lack of a better term, on the sides. I put the plasticard edge on with a glue gun and smoothed it out with a putty knife, but I think I can do better. I pissed around with an iron and managed to melt the glue again on one edge and get it even flatter, so will do the rest the same way so they butt together more seamlessly.

A few pics. I do believe this will answer Question 1.

    20190925_17301320190925_17304920190925_17301520190925_173155

That’s not even half the scatter terrain; I can pack the table with it if needs be.  I just took a few quick pics of what will likely be the setup for our baptismal Battlesystem throw down. I wanted it more open so we could have a big ruck in the middle, probably by turn 2. None of the players I’ve recruited as PC’s seem to have the patience for manoeuvre, so I didn’t want to complicate things.

There are four more boards (two river ones I’ve already shown, and two more flat boards). The plan when I was commissioned for this was to be able to create two 4′ by 6′ game surfaces.

    2. Starter Sets? I only buy starter sets if I can justify the price for the mini’s I want within the set, or if I can trade one faction for more of the other…. i.e. the GW dwarf/goblin box Battle for Skull Pass. I traded the goblins for more dwarfs.

    3. A book that translated well into a movie? Blade Runner comes to mind… but there aren’t many. At the other end of the spectrum, Hollywood murdered Robert Heinlein’s classic, Starship Troopers. I liked LOTR, but not because it stayed true to the trilogy. The Hobbit was a bust.

    4. Comedy duo’s? Abbot and Costello are up there for me, especially the movies where they were terrorized by almost every Hollywood monster of the day.

Also fond of Cato (Burt Kwouk) and Inspector Clouseau (Peter Sellers) in the Pink Panther movies… before they got lame that is.

I’m at work, so at the mercy of the Classic Rock radio station.

    Back to university learnin’.

@ceppie – one takes a test. Unless you are setting one! 100pts.

@mage – it looks like Picard is in for some loving. [Wah-wah peddle in background] He must be going ‘skiing’ and then he can be ‘Lucky Pierre’. Startfleet are a bit too inclusive if you ask me. 100pts.

Peter was crucified inverted as he was not equal to Jesus…that is the £1.99 version. So the Romans obliged. The nurse wore it under her lapel (in case she offended anyone), but I spotted it. She didn’t walk like a Satanist so I took a wild stab in the dark. Hospitals are the best place to get rid of a stiff. That is how Maddie “vanished” – medical waste or crematoria.

Speaking of the occult, I did go for a wander on wednesday night and I saw two nurses messing with Tarot cards! I wonder if it is a BUPA thing?

Unclejimmy likes a bit of game. 100pts. Rabbit A+, Hare C-, Game Birds E. Quail is nice, but there is not enough to make a sandwich…they probably just cooked a Budgie. How would I know? 100pts. Hunting is not a bad skill to have.

Judging by the size of your “pledge” you are not having any ‘dates’ this weekend! 200pts. You get an A+ for it. I did see the pictures of your bikes – much more done on them?

    1. Never played any real tournament, but I have played one-off games with people like that. “You have more cover than me on that flank!” Yawn-a-thon. However, I don’t like seeing pictures from games where it looks like they have just emptied out their scatter terrain box and started playing. Wacoshop are so good at doing this. I tend to be unphased by my lack of terrain or cover. “Adapt-Improvise-Overcome” are the rules of the battlefield. The Zulu’s didn’t mind a lack of cover and they still kept coming.

I wouldn’t mind doing a ‘Zulu’ (the film) styled game.

    2. Wacoshop doesn’t allow conversion much anymore. That sucks. Even adding a few grenades or purity seals makes a huge difference. 300pts. I do love the starter-sets from CB. They are all in – it is how we started. Dave had 2nd edition, but when BoW did the week of videos of the first set we dived right in. They rule.

I loved the Wacoshop ‘Black Reach’ set. The Ork copters were amazing.

    3. My dad loves Moorcock. I could never quite get into him. However, I love Jerry Cornelius! What a hero. 500pts. We used to play the Elric RPG too.

LotR suck as a book and a movie. Too convoluted. Just like Stephen King. I saw a post by @sundancer who was looking at some Vietnam boats and mentioned Apocalypse Now. ‘Heart of Darkness’ is what AN was based on and is one of my favourite books. The scene where Kurtz says, “The horror, the horror.” makes more sense than the same scene in the book. However, it does make that scene in the book a little more disturbing. It’s all that existential pish.

Moby Dick with Gregory Peck is awesome. The version with Picard as Ahab is pretty good too. Then again, ‘First Contact’ is Moby Dick…just in space. One of the best ST movies too.

If you want to turn this into one of those trendy “book groups” then we could give it a try. Your first 2000 word essay is due next week! However, it will be a fashion book about flying kites over Chenobyl, or something equally painful.

    4. Rik and Ade will become the next Laurel & Hardy. Jamie loves them. He used to watch ‘Bottom’ when he was at my parents and love it.  That is what they will be considered in another 30-40 years. 5000pts. They rule as a double act. Steptoe and Son were genius on the stage/screen – their dyanmic is amazing. The Two Ronnies when I was younger – my grandparents loved them and I just absorbed it. That was how I ‘discovered’ oldie comedy. If you want real funny then you have to study the works of 1970’s UK Club comedians. Genius. Not PC. However, that is WHY it is funny.

Jim Jefferies is a massive dick. Did you see the stitch-up interview he ‘created’ to make someone look like a nazi? He WAS funny. I saw him live about 5 years ago and he was pretty good. I also saw, and met, Bill Hicks. It still pains me to think that he is not here.

If you want written comedy then you have to read stuff by Spike Milligan. I would suggest his audio version of the book ‘Puckoon’. The story of an Irish town divided by the newly draw border. Pure class. His war stories are brilliant.

Billy Ray Cyrus was the star of the TV show Bill was writing. Each week they hunt him down! The TV studio asked, “Will there be titty?” and Bill said he would do a re-write.

Motley Crue! Fuck yeah. 5000pts. We got tickets to see Steel Panther next February too.

Never been a Metallica fan. Some great songs, but they are just coasters now.

Danzig – awesome. Seen them live 3 times. Very heavy…in fact their records are so heavy you can’t get them off the turntable.

I also found a Wacoshop mini to paint for your challenge. I will post a pic when I find the cable. I had to take everything from my desk to remove the amplifier. I found a great mini-amp on Ebay – it even plays from memory cards, has a radio and bluetooth!

@ceppie – did you do bad or was it a crappy test? 200pts.

    1. point taken! (That is me told to F-off) 1000pts. When we used to play WFB that is what we would go for. Impressive.

    2. I had never thought of that…one player starter sets. 500pts. I know that Infinity make faction starter-sets, but that is not what I was thinking about. The Infinity sets are great for me and the boy, but a bit heavy if you just want one faction. You can sell the others, but it is still a pain in the bottom.

I need to pack those Dwarves too! I’ll try and remember.

    3. Blade Runner is not bad, but I doubt the book would work as a film without some filling and tweaking. The same is true with a lot of PKD’s work. ‘The Man in the High Castle’ is a great example. However, I love TMitHC! It’s a bit like ‘Secrets of the Third Reich’ without the Werewolves. Did you know the SS had a real project called “Operation: Werewolf”?

I think the original ‘War of the Worlds’ was a good modernised version of the book. The Martian Chronicles was fun. You are right about ‘Starship Troopers’. Cool movies.

    4. Abbot & Costello rule. 1000pts. They did get about in those movies. Really funny.

I never got into the Pink Panther films. Peter Sellers is an amazing actor. Two words…Doctor & Strangelove.

Back to watching the student girls trundle by more like it…I used to love it in the library. Having to squeeze past some young lady among the shelves. Very horny places. 200pts.

    Mooziks too…

Yes, I once had a similar hair style! In my defence I was 16.

From the 90’s, but a great intro! Another song I first heard played by John Peel.

…vinyl version too. Great album cover.

Another person we lost too soon.

This video is a great ‘time capsule’ of the late 80’s. I remember the horrors.

Yay .. weekend, hobby time. At least as and when I can find a bit of me time 🙂
Need to find a way to fix my trike, because the rear wheel isn’t holding any air inside for long and that’s not good.
I’d do it myself, however because it’s also the wheel with the motor I am going to have to ask a professional bicycle repairman.

I also vow to finish my one armed Nob and start on the next squad of boys.

    > 1. Terrain and terrain set-up. Do you just fling it together or does it have to look correct?

Randomly dumping terrain feels wrong … it’s got to have some sort of logic to it.
As for asymetric terrain ? There’s one simple solution : play both sides once.

    > 2. I watched a video where they were showing off a starter-set. Are you a straight from the box kind of girl or do you buy a rulebook, a few minis, some other bits, then get going? What do you think about “starter-sets”?

Starter sets ? I love them. A playable game and all the rules (or at least enough to use the army within).
The only thing missing is a willing victim *eh* I mean opponent.

    > 3. Did some reading to pass the time. Books to movies tend to not work very well, but is there any you like/love?
Misery … I’d even argue that it is the only one (or at least one of the few) Stephen King books that got a decent movie.

I’ve seen the new version of “It” and while it is a decent movie that doesn’t have that tacky ‘happy ending’ from the 1990 tv-movie it doesn’t feel like something I’d watch again.

    > 4. Comedy sucks. Not all, but most. Your favourite double-act(s)?

    Does Monty Python count ?

    There’s also Rowan Atkinson …

    @tuffyears – that is not a pledge!

@limburger – you have to show me a picture of your bike! 200pts. Born to be wild…

So, you are doing something to your Nob with one arm? This is the wrong forum for that. Pervert. 100pts.

    1. Both sides at once? That is always good for balance, but it is something we have never done.

    2. That is what I hadn’t thought of until @mage mentioned it – one player starter sets! 200pts. Everything to get you going is a great idea as then you have no excuse to start playing. 300pts.

    3. I totally agree. 1000pts. Misery was a pretty good read (someone left it in a room I stayed in while I was on a course) and the film was good too. Everything else SK writes/adapts is rubbish.

I will confess to watching ‘Tommyknockers’, but only because Tracy Lords was in it. It was terrible.

    4. I’ll accept Monty Python. 10000pts. They rule. Everyone should have to listen to the ‘Live at Drury Lane’ album. Preferably on 8-track too.

Of course, Rowan Atkinson is a double act…well, there is ‘Not the 9 O’Clock News’!

    @unclejimmy

not both at once … that’d be silly.

No play the same scenario/map twice, but once as an attacker and once as a defender.

    As for my trike

    PICT1527

It’s got a few upgrades since that picture was taken :

    – triple derailer (or ‘derailleur’ ) at the front, which gaves me 27 gears total

    – e-bike upgrade (hub motor at the rear wheel)

It’s been worth every penny (if you need to ask how much you certainly can’t afford one ;-))
I only now noticed I’ve had it for 10 years now …
