Depends on the spatial meta of the game you’re playing.

In mass battles with groups of models either in loose or tight formation then the base size and shape will be less relevant, apart from shapes compatible with tight packing.

Many skirmish games however, with the individual model unit, rely on almost millimeter perfect positioning (I’m thinking Infinity, Malifaux etc). In those games the base size and shape can have a significant impact on the gameplay.
