Happy Sunday!
The Boot Camp sounds amazing and very reasonably priced too. Just the thing to get into Dropzone Commander
Happy Sunday guys, the boot camp sounds good, and alot cheaper than I was expecting! Id probably stay the Sunday night for ease of travel. But I’m sure one of you guys could put me up for the night 😉 speaking of putting up, you guys staying with me again for salute?
That would be great Dave
1) Can you spare the room?
2) you sure Mrs Dave won’t mind?
Will chat to you Monday about this 🙂
Warren, so your blanking my offer 🙁
I’m like a 15 minute drive for Salute, with plenty of space for you and the gang.
The boot camp sounds good, it’s a reasonable price.
I shall give you a shout on Monday too 🙂
We don’t know who’s going or travel plans yet so will have to sort all of that first 🙂
cool speak to Monday I’ll be back from work at 18:30
No offence mate, I basically offered a year in advance lol
no offence taken Dave but I had also offered before Salute last year
Careful guys, you are making my other half giggle here 😉
And yes I’ve explained that it’s only about the miniatures 😉
Don’t worry, I hear it’s personality that counts rather than size…
We could always do an Olympics style bidding system to host BOW 😉
Probably wind up staying in Qatar if you do that lol
And yes @warzan its already agreed, and I’ve arranged a bigger place for us all to stay at. My parents have offered there house up in sacrifice for salute, so this time we will have a couple of spare rooms and two beds for you guys to fight over. Also about a 15 minute drive from salute as you know because we stopped by their house when we picked up the extension lead for salute. And even if the shite hit the fan, you can still all stay at the Dartford studio 😉
hey @deaddave if you need a place to crash i have spare rooms at my place 🙂
Sweet @dignity that would be much appreciated!
…and still no chance to watch on my android tablet. 🙁
Try it now 🙂
I watch every week on my android tablet no bother
You saved my weekend! Thanks a lot.
I like the sound of the Boot Camp.
If I wasn’t on the other side of the world I’d be very tempted to join in.
You might want to think about a rulebook as part of the Starter Army package.
I’ve just had a look at the entry on the Hawk Wargames site for the PHR plastic starter and it only mentions a Reference Sheet for the army.
As you get further back in time with your historical gaming, the problem of making sure your guys are equipped properly diminishes. A Greek hoplite has a spear and shield. Even if you by a multi-part plastic kit instead of one piece metal minis, it’s hard to go wrong. As for someone starting out who wants something easy to get into (and who isn’t concerned about which period they want to game), go with SAGA. Buy a pre-made 4pt warband and you’re golden.
I where about to say SAGA for ease of picking up and go.
Ok watched the first few min’s if Lloyd is doing the US in BA then you are going to have everyone ganging up against Justin…ok I know that’s nothing unusual but surely 3 Allies an 1 Axis player is going to be boring? Surely Lloyd should go Japanese or Italian?
I’ll give a tentative yes. The only thing stopping me from giving a definite yes right now is making sure I can afford the whole trip. That aside, bagsy PHR :p
@warzan if you want quick easy entry into historical. .then go DBA in 15 mm all armies are based in a standard way and many min’s companies do sell armies in a DBA format. Plus you can then expand to using other DBx rules or a system like Fields of Glory.
For Bootcamp travel options: what if I come over in a dingy? I’d be landing somewhere on the (hopefully) east coast of (hopefully) Northern Ireland…
Those bootcamps sound like awesome value
The boot camp sounds like a goer, though personally I wouldn’t attend the Dropzone one as the game doesn’t appeal to me, but I’d definately be interested in any future ones.
I’m looking forward to following the progress of your army building for Bolt Action. I’m in the process of planning mine, and realising I’ve got a lot of converting to do especially with the infantry to fit out a Chinese army. Though the great thing the Chinese government bought arms and armour from many countries, so I can have a bits and pieces from every other faction.
That’s a great idea! Will work for both sides too, the Maoists and the Nationalists – have you seen the Mongol Infantry set from Fireforge Games? Be tempted to see if you could convert them into WW2 Mongolians/Manchurians 🙂
Happy Sunday,
You can count me in for the hobby boot camp and i would like the extra night stay on Sunday and i will fly home Monday.
I’ve been wanting to try Drop zone commander for a while now and this is to good an opportunity to miss out on.
P.s UCM for me.
Well I am definitely up for the Boot camp if I can get a flight from Luton Airport:-)
I can get a flights from Luton gets me into Belfast at 8.50am, 4.55pm, 7.10pm or 8.15pm…so it depends on the connections from Belfast to BoW whether I need to get get the early morning flight or the afternoon flight…lol
Oh and definitely has to be the Resistance for me..lol
I had assumed the Resistance wasn’t an option as they don’t have a plastic starter.
Never looked at that just read through the factions…but if I have to pay a bit more for them I don’t mind…lol
Like I say, I am just assuming 🙂
It sucks to live so far away otherwise I’d be there!! The boot camps sound like so much fun! Oh well when I win the lottery… LOL
Happy Sunday, Folks. Warren, buddy, pal, my friend I’m from the place that made chicken wings ( Buffalo Wings ) Buffalo New York. Man we have every type of wing, your little heart can ever want. Plus roast beef sandwiches on salted rolls. Real Pizza not the stuff ones that tastes like cardboard . One day y’all have to come here and really pig out , bars don’t close till 4am and man we have a ton of them. I would love to go to your boot camp but that weekend we have our family St. Pat’s day party , we get 300 drunk Irish nut cases( my family ) together for food fun and good times, so maybe I can join the next one. Have Fun guys and one day you guys should like do a trip to the US. Thanks for the time Pepsidan.
I’m from across the border in Fort Erie! I always laugh when other places say they have the best Buffalo Wings…. they obviously never had them from Buffalo!
Warren, is there a way we can work a trip to Buffalo into our Salute schedule? I really want them wings.
Even though I don’ think I’ll be able to go due to work commitments 🙁 I think the boot camp idea sounds awesome and the price more than reasonable for what you get. 🙂
Bit gutted about it being Dropzone that I’ll be missing out on though as I would have loved to have had a go at that one. 🙁
I’ll have a look at the option from me flying from Kopenhagen and see if i can make it too you lot.
Happy Sunday! This boot camp weekends are a great idea. If I hadn’t already a great painters seminar on the same weekend I would have said yes for sure. So I hope you get enough participants for the first time so I can come to the second. 😉
I’ll do what i can do come so please hold on to a ticket for me and i will get in touch with you shortly about flights and such.
Great show guys. And a good price for boot camp. Sadly i have to pay around 430 £ just to fly to Ireland and back to Denmark again.
Anyway sounds like it could be an awesome weekend 😉
Boot camp sounds great =]
Might consider taking the ferry if it’d be cheaper.
Would love to do the bootcamp but sadly have health issues that prevent me from being able to travel on my own. -Fail-
Happy Sunday!
Im very interested in the boot camp weekend as i want to get into the gaming side of the hobby but slightly worried in that im a complete novice at painting and gaming.
If it means that i wont slow down the proceedings im up for it 🙂
It’s the Violator :). I wouldn’t worry about it. Plus, DzC minis are pretty easy to put together and paint.
Sounds like I’m in a very similar boat to you then matey! I’m an avid hobbyist and though I enjoy my painting I’m no great shake at it yet. Sadly I just don’t get the time and have the opportunity to game much (though I could try harder with the latter tbh!). Something like this would be a huge gateway for me to actually get my arse gaming within the hobby.
Aside from Romain and John, pretty much the whole BoW crew aren’t great at the painting and modelling. I personally take forever and a day to finish one miniature. So no it won’t be a problem. Anyway, its your weekend too, you’re aloud to go at your own pace. I promise Warren won’t be standing behind the painting tables cracking a whip… that costs extra.
It’s both the appeal of getting into DZC and the incentive of painting up an army quickly that appeals to me .. hope to really get a place:-)
The bootcamp does sound awesome, can you guys pencil me in? I would need to book the Friday off work and also make sure that I won’t bankrupt myself with the flights. If I was coming I would probably go for the ucm.
With regards to the fan fiction Friday, are there any issues with the IP for some of the game systems? Wouldn’t want you guys to get more cease and desist orders!
Bigphis is probably on to something here. Fiction on free part of site is probably ok. But if it’s in backstage, GW and others can say you are making folks pay for THEIR trademarked universes and characters.
Glad Lloyd will be repping the USA at the BoW gaming tables!
Love the boot camp idea! but can’t make it 🙁 live stream or content would be awesome so the one who can’t make it can still be immersed.
Great work!!
Although not something that is practical for me to attend, I do hope there are enough who can to make the boot camp a reality. I think it’s a great idea.
Also, happy Sunday!
Happy sunday.
really looking forward to the warzone coverage, got the rules and 2 starter sets as an early birthday present, perfect timing eh?
Justin: Never, ever, skimp on primer.
Ever. 🙂
Totally agree with Warren regarding the Bolt Action troops.
I recently bought the D Day Firefight and was stumped as to how to arm the troops.
In the end I went to Warlord’s website and viewed the item’s webpage.
Woo! First time I’ve caught this one a Sunday, granted it’s 11pm here but I can finally join in on a, Happy Sunday!!!
Firstly, another Great XLBS show! thank you guys.
I concur with peachey regarding not making it to the boot camp, (this time!), also some live stream to get involved with.
Regarding the Warzone Bauhaus Vorreiters, how does a single tracked vehicle turn? (very badly?).
Scenario driven games are invariably ‘unbalanced’, especially those based upon true events! The advantage of historical gaming is that there is a wealth of background information to draw upon, from a large cross section of sources, eminent historians and actual accounts included. Compare this with gaming within the ‘confines’ of a fictitious setting, where one is restricted to the offerings of the game designers and writers, which also ties you into chiefly, their product line! (cynical? maybe, but true!).
I slightly differ in my view here, compared to Warren and his concerns with ‘newbies’ entering a particular game and genre, in that, I have found it to be a rather ‘myopic’ environment getting into ‘proprietary’ games (I won’t list any as there are quite a few, and we all know who they are?) You either buy in for the duration, (however long that version will last!) as allured to on previous clips, collecting being a primarily OCD trait, there is a large investment made when getting into these games.
What does this mean? if you collect, chiefly into historical, no matter what genre and figure size, one can almost always use them in the next ‘new game rules system’, whereas when bought into a particular ‘proprietary’ system, then long term continuity depends upon how long that ‘system’ continues. Unless one is prepared to continuously ‘house rule’ adapt the game, something which historical gamers have always done to a lesser or greater degree! I have yet to meet the ‘seasoned’ wargamer who has found the ‘valhalla’ of games rules that do not require even a modicum of tweaking to their satisfaction! (wargamer’s are a fickle breed!).
I am not advocating everyone ‘must’ get into historical wargaming at all, contrary to the inference so far, but to at least give it a try, some time, as Warren is finding, it can be immensely interesting and rewarding, not to mention informative. There is obviously a need for ‘escapism’ designed games, but they are limited, and generally have a short ‘shelf life’. Boys, men, old men and even ladies have all enjoyed games, sub genre ‘war games’ alike, it boils down to once again ‘horses for courses’ and we can all learn a little from each other whilst enjoying the plethora of gaming systems out there. Hooray!!!
Hi guys,
Around those prices totally interested in coming to Bootcamp, as I was thinking of getting into Dropzone myself anyway. Let me know how to apply. 🙂
The format and pricing of the bootcamp sound fantastic, and I’d love to do DZC. Unfortunately I’m already busy that weekend, but if I’d been free, I’d have definitely been in. Depending on the game, I’m keen to come next time you do something like this.
On the subject of getting in to historicals, I agree that working out what you need to do with your miniatures is a significant barrier, and perhaps one of the reasons skirmishy / pulpy settings like pirates and colonials do well, as there are no hard and fast rules or army lists.
A game (that I’ve played in a demo, though not more than that) that makes it very easy for entrants is ‘Napoleon at War’. Easy to read and understand army lists, units that are sold in ‘ready to field’ formations, etc. It’s an 18mm game, so not compatible with a lot of other stuff, but it looks very nice. More info here: http://www.manatwar.es/?p=157
In fact, it’s a game I first tried while on holiday in Barcelona – a good candidate for a gaming city guide if ever there was one!
Re: Bolt Action, I think going with Berlin @warzan is a good idea. Lots of people do Stalingrad, but I’ve not seen anyone do Berlin, and I’m not really sure why. The soviets being on the offensive is an interesting twist too.
As I’ve mentioned previously, I think you’ll all have more fun if you’re all playing roughly the same time period, so I think @lloyd should go for something late(r) war too. The US didn’t join the war until relatively late, so early war is out anyway, but by the end of the war they’ve got a lot more armour and equipment options.
I agree with @angelicdespot . Stalingrad is a little overdone, and given the fact that @warzan now has a T-3/85, Stalingrad is out anyway. The ’85 didn’t get deployed into Soviet tank corps until January 1944 (Stalingrad was Sept 42 – Feb 43). Playing a late battle like Berlin also allows Justin to play his late war stuff (if memory serves, he has late-model PzKpfw IVs and Panther Ds and Gs, again, late 1943-44 and later.
It’s almost sad that that T-34/85 came in. Unless you want to ignore when the tank came out, Stalingrad is out. I agree with @dignity that you do the Leningrad-Novgorod offensive. At least then your T-34/85 is “legal.”
Uh oh . . . never mind. @warzan decided to run with Berlin. Even better. 😀 That will teach me to write comments while the show is still running.
God . . . Berlin. There were some extremely elite German units in Berlin. Yes, old men and boys were there as well. But these were built around an incredibly tough cadre of Waffen SS troops, some of which were actually French who literally had nothing to live for (they couldn’t actually go home, by the way.) I think Bolt Action has a “Charlemagne” Division set that would work here.
some of the last units to defend the Reichskanzlei were the SS Charlemagne and the SS Viking (French/Belgian and Danish/Norwegian troops), not to forget the two-dozen strong British Free Corps (most of whom were hanged after the war)
Boot camp sounds interesting, been painting a resistance starter army but yet to play a game of Dropzone Commander. Could start a second force before I have played a game! Return flights from Manchester to Belfast are between £55 and £90 from easy jet and bmi depending on the time of day. Or you could go from Manchester to Belfast via London with BA for £218 if you fancy. I probably won’t make it but that doesn’t mean I do not want to go, keep up the support for Dropzone it is what got me to sign up for Backstage. Longer notice would be nice as I have already committed to a few things this year.
Happy sunday folks!
Bootcamp sounds a great plan, unfortunately this one is a miss for me (in terms of personal finances and timing) but certainly look forward to more in the future! 🙂
Why not theme your army round the 62nd Warren? They were the army that defended Stalingrad (some units ended up being whittled down to just a few hundred men by the end of the siege) – afterwards, Stalin gave them the honour of being renamed the 8th Guards Army, in the end, they picked up all sorts of extra units as they were bulked out with replacements etc and ended up fighting all the way through from Stalingrad to the Battle of Berlin. Could start out with the early/mid war stuff, then add whatever you like afterwards as the 8th Guards Army grew in size. Here’s a list of the regiments they had with them at Stalingrad (so easy to pick and choose bits and pieces really, in reality, you would get detachments of this operating with detachments of that in different sectors as ultimately, they all fought under the same umbrella of command so to speak)
33rd, 35th Guards, 87th, 98th, 112th, 131st, 196th, 229th, 244th, 315th, 399th Rifle Divisions
10th, 38th, 42nd, 115th, 124th, 129th, 149th Rifle Brigades post 9-27-1942 193rd Rifle Division
23rd Tank Corps
20th Tank Destroyer Brigade
115th Fortified Region
twelve artillery and mortar regiments
And that was just in 1942.
Here’s a link to the wiki page if you’re interested 🙂
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8th_Guards_Army_(Soviet_Union)
Missed from my previous post
@warzan – if you you’re looking to match up a list against Justin’s then look at the new Osfront campaign book – there’ll be scenarios in there that will match the armies up for you 🙂
@warzan it might be worth looking at the Siege of Budapest as a historical location, It was fought towards the end of ’44 and the beginning of ’45. It was one of the bloodiest battles in WW2 and It was a key political prize to both the Soviets and the Axis.
I’d love to go to the bootcamp but I’m just not sure I can at the moment.
bizzare really, Hungary and Romania are often overlooked but they’re really interesting! Just breaking through the Carpathians was difficult enough, good shout @stoney997 🙂
The Boot Camp is a great Idea. Would love to be able to say yes but the flights from Australia are the killer. $2500 dollars return trip. Still tempting but that much money also would buy me more than enough Dropzone figures to fumble through to learn the game by myself. Maybe is you still running them this time next year i can start saving for flights now.
I would be interested in the gaming weekend
Need missus permission if it goes ahead
As the name suggests, I’m over in Northern Ireland. Would be great to come up for the weekend. really want to go. – price is very reasonable. I want to come along. Easy for me to get to.
I’ve assembled around 50 of the plastic Bolt Action British infantry and I still refer to the instructions.
Berlin definitely looks the most interesting city fight. Hello Iosif Stalin tank! 😀
And the bootcamp is tremendous value. I’m not available that weekend but please do more!
I am good to go and tell herself that the weekend is now fully booked 🙂
Man… I would love to do one of these bootcamps… the price is awesome at their end… BUT the getting there for me is pretty tough…. need a passport $140 not counting fees and other charges…. flight from Connecticut, USA to Belfast about $1200 on average…. maybe if I start saving now I can do it NEXT year. Or if they do one later THIS year…. Anyway, good show as always, my interest in Bolt Action grows weekly.
Boot camp sounds fantastic – may be possible just need to see if I can make it work with work.
You know, the more I watch these shows, especially the ones with historical content, the more I’m starting to think that Justin ( @dignity ) is the smartest guy on the show. At 23:30 he says basically, “research is part of the fun” – “research is half the point.” This is precisely what a lot of historical players do instead of painting hundreds of little minis. Sure, I paint minis, but I don’t put nearly as much effort into them as say John Lyons or the like.
Yes, some people play fast and loose with history, especially at these “tournaments” where people put British armies up against Soviet armies, American armies against American armies, just so long as the points work. Now I understand how tournaments work, but is that really historical gaming at that point? If your going to pay that little attention to history, no worries, that’s certainly your prerogative. But why not play Infinity or Warzone or DZC?
That way people don’t roll their eyes or start “yawning” when you start talking about your historical gaming.
And before me and fellow historical gamers get branded as “downers” who wants to spend all my time poring through tedious detail instead of painting and gaming with miniatures . . . when I went to write my “Four Levels of Wargaming” article series I ducked into Warhammer 40K wiki site, just for a primer so I could include a few 40K angles in the writing. I think I typed in “Space Marine” and . . .
. . . Holy S***!! Are you kidding me? I think I wore out my mouse’s wheel scrolling through the 500 ages of text that exploded onto my screen.
You know, some people would be rolling their eyes or “yawning” at this point . . .
“the more I’m starting to think that Justin ( @dignity ) is the smartest guy on the show.”
Careful now!
He’s been in a lot of shows == million monkeys on typewriters 😉
The Fiction Friday idea sounds great! I really hope it succeeds. Definitely looking forward to this Backstage contributor’s section, especially the ability to upload / contribute .pdfs.
Great show as always guys and colour me seriously interested in attending the event – for once everything seems to fit! Flights from Exeter to Belfast are pretty reasonable so it’s only the drive up there from Cornwall for me and if I could book Sunday night too that would make for a really relaxing and unhurried weekend away with time to enjoy the Sunday at leisure. The beauty of being self-employed too is I can just decide to take the few days off – and guess what… I just have done! I’ve been on about attending an event for years but put-off by knowing where to start, this would be perfect for me so please put me in the very probably pile and let me know what to do next. Psyched already!
Cheers,
Ben
Great XLBS guys, the boot camp sounds cool think I will wait for a different games maybe bolt action as Iv been trying to get a reply from warren about coming over for a few games with him and John
Boot Camp sounds amazing and I’d love to go, but I recently got into Dropzone Commander anyway so its only fair someone who isn’t already playing it gets a shot 😉
Wish I could attend the boot camp. While watching the XLBS I realised you might also want to consider providing some sort of army transport for the attendees, even if its just a suitable cardboard box and bubble wrap. I’d hate for you to get to Sunday afternoon and realise no-one can get their new painted armies home safely.
Looks like £75-100 for me to fly from Birmingham on the Friday and return Saturday(Flyby/easyjet), if your price is £100-£150 I’m in. Sounds like a good weekend and Ive wanted to have a go at Dropzone Commander. Would need to get there around 9 or 10pm though.
Boot camps sound awesome and the price is fine for a weekends hobby jolly. Can’t make this one but I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for future dates.
Great episode! cheers
Sounds awesome, id love to attend. Ill be at salute too, be good to meet you guys again
Great show fellas, I think Warren’s city fighting Soviets will be awesome ( I picturing ppsh armed, great coats flapping, Molotov cocktail tossing, mad men) – in terms of historical units for inspiration, I’ve always liked the story of Pavlov’s House, Stalingrad. Warren look it up you won’t be disappointed.
re the boot camp I won’t be able to attend, but the price and concept sounds amazing. I’ll try and make any that are arranged later in the year ( the more notice, the better for me).
Have a great weekend all.
Boot camp sounds nice and reasonably priced. Unfortunately I just realised I’m looking at an additional 200 pounds for the flight. Adding beer money and a train ticket it would be up to 350-400 pounds for me, which I just can’t afford at the moment.
I still think it would be worth the money, you don’t do these things everyday and remember them probably forever. So maybe another time in the future.
I would love to attend Boot Camp, but that’s the same weekend at the London Super Comic Convention, so I’ll be busy with that. Maybe next time.
Great show, the Friday thing should be good the more fluff on games is good get the mind going to make the game come to life. Good luck on the W.Z.C. week end.
Ps heirs a commander for Justin if he needs one.
http://www.warlordgames.com/legends-of-the-ostfront-sgt-steiner/
Ah, is that Sgt Steiner from “Cross of Iron” fame? One of Sam Peckinpah’s best movies (his only war movie, I think), and am honest look at WW2 from the Axis side.
Boot camp sounds great! May be tempted by Drop Zone, but not sure if its the game for me!? Might have to see how this one goes and jump on the next one!? Keep up the great work! 🙂
Wow that is a killer deal for the boot camp weekend. I wish I could go, but the cost of a round trip flight from Indianapolis is not doable for me at this time. I looked it up for S**ts and Giggles and the cheapest flight was $1,080 US. Ouch!
It must be terrible being stuck in Indianapolis. There are no good gaming events that go on there….. :p
I know, your right. I shouldn’t be complaining when I live 10 minutes from Gen Con. 😉
if there’s a space left and I can clear it with the boss I would like to reserve a spot on the bootcamp please?….. sorry for the late reply, I was working today.. bloody NHS expecting me to look after people on sunday
Just as everyone else Im psyched about the Boot camp idea. Going from Sweden would require some vacation time (and money) so I hope there will be a few of these in the upcoming year so I can visit you all.
Interested in boot camp and so is the wife…… We would need a room suitable for someone with limited mobility is that possible?
Hi guys…I may have a technical problem…the backstage version on my end is in much lower quality than the frontstage one…more so in full Screen…some areas are quite pixly. Any suggestions? Am I doing something wrong?
I actually noticed the lower quality too. I just thought I was watching it on a very high resolution screen was to blame.
Backstage videos are not 1080p chaps 🙂
We would love to put them out larger, but the costs would require a hefty hike in the price of backstage.
Even 480p frontstage is better quality in comparison 🙁
…and to be more specific…the backround is quit sharp….darth and the troopers….or the wwe books and hero quest box are perfekt….but you three are very pixly and more so than in the 480p in frontstage…
The bootcamp sounds excellant! I’ll have a look at what my opions for travel are, would really like to join in.
Cheers
Def Interested in the boot camp if it goes ahead. Need to do a bit of planning as have a new baby to contend with but could make it work. Let me know!
I’d be well up for the boot camp!
Been a busy day but just thougtt Id squeeze in a the XlBS before bedtime and get an error MSG ” the video could not be loaded, either because the site or network failed or because the format is not supported”
On a gen 1 iPad running iOS 5.1.1 but watched the front stage weekender fine yesterday? Any ideas guys? Has the format changed for backstage? Cheers Pete.
Just treiednt on my iPhone 5 with 8.1.2 and works fine though. Just thought I’d let you know. Cheers Pete.
There’s no way I could make it, but this Bootcamp sounds like a fantastic deal! I wish I lived closer, or that you guys would do some of these in the US!
Bad weekend!
Love to have joined in for the boot camp and I have looking for a chance (or excuse) to get into DropZone since Salute but we are running Paddyfaux in Cork that weekend. Maybe next time…
Have fun!
Having seen (a few weeks ago) Lloyd give Justine and John hard times for their terrain layout, I would love to see Lloyd do a series of hobby labs where he takes a 4×4 or 3×3 piece of board and each fortnight take it to a finished gaming table, from planning with pen and paper through to weathering, buildings and the little touches that bring it to life.
Each fortnight he could demonstrate the techniques used and then list the materials he will be using in the next episode so we can follow along. Much like Warrens journey into F.O.W or the current Bolt Action, we could all take the terrain journey together with Lloyd.
Admittedly we could all end up with the same tables the world over ( I’m in Australia), but the techniques learned could be used for different sized tables.
I know there is a hell of a lot of content there (snow terrain, dessertscapes, city scapes, forests and fields, star fields for X-Wing), but because it is such a long project scheduling would be taken care of for quite some time.
Hobby Lab is great (one of my favourite parts of Backstage), but its a bit disjointed, one week telegraph poles another week asteroids.
And Lloyd would be able to educate us all on the way terrain should be done.

Awesome idea! Bootcamp sounds great. I don’t really cope with the scale of Dropzone though (I failed at flames of war) but definately count me in for a Bolt Action one if thats in the pipeline at some point. Keep up the great work guys.
I’ve got to admit, I’m very tempted by the gaming weekend, even though I’ve got a couple of Dropzone Commander forces already, admittedly, I’ve not played more than a handful of non starter army games).
Always was tempted by the resistance or PHR though…
But yeah, I could tempt a mate into coming along with me too.
The bootcamp sounds outstanding; I’m living in the states, but was looking to plan a trip to the Mecca of wargaming at some point to make a visit or two to the big wargaming companies (Warlord first and foremost). If you continue offering these, it would be the perfect opportunity for me to schedule a trip over around it. How about it, a former colonial rebel heads back for some (simulated) payback!
Hi guys great weekenders again. I have just booked time off at work for that weekend so I am definitely up for s weekend of gaming travel no probs just a quick flight over etc. I would like to go resistance if that is an option please.
Well time booked off work on the friday so that’s me all set for the bootcamp…just waiting for the nod and i will book my travel 🙂
I’m right with Warren about the fore-knowledge apparently required for building Bolt-Action minis. I do find that sort of thing confusing. Maybe there is some scope for doing a Hobby lab style “how to build this set”? You could also cover painting it to tabletop standard. I’d watch that.
Bootcamp sounds great and very good value. Getting there from Luxembourg is not easy or cheap. Maybe I’ll make it one day but it won’t be this time.
Best of luck with it!
only have to change one shift with work and travel costs for flights from easy jet will be between £60-80
well on for the bootcamp, any places left?
If (and when) you need a boot camp for MERCS, I’ve a black ops member, so I’d be happy to help if/ when you choose to do that
So, I live in the states and was wondering what places in Ireland would be nice to visit. My goal is the go there with wife and visit some of the gaming sites for myself for a day or two.
That’s a good question. I can’t make the dates of this boot camp, but I’ve never been to Ireland (north or south), so if I can make one in future, I’d like to take the opportunity to do a bit of travelling, and some recommendations would be appreciated!
As a suggestion for the Boot Camp, try to find a way to exchange units from the same army between assitance to the event. The reason behind this is that every time you play against a certain faction it will feel exactly the same rather than being a bit more special. I know this might a affect the experience in a negative way if you end up with a very unbalance army because of poor swapping decisions… but that might be fixed with some hot tips from Hawk Wargames Staff.
I wish i’ll could be there but i’m on the other end of the pond 🙁 , Cheers!
I am about to purchase the same Russian box set. Don’t have any one at my club who plays Bolt Action at the moment but im hoping to rope in some of the Flames of war players once they see my models
Does anyone have any idea how we will know if we have been accepted for the Boot Camp?
Warran you have been PM’d.
Soviet Supremacy Supreme!
Don’t do Stalingrad, simply as no one will want to play you! The Soviets in bolt Action in Stalingrad can all be Fanatic which makes them unbelievably hard and beardie.
Read my PM, I think I can help you out.
Oh and something I didn’t mention in the PM, you like Stugs? Well here in the Kremlin we also have Stugs, except we have more and with a bigger gun.
Yes hello to the Su-100

By the way, building Soveit infantry is really easy.
On the little leaflet, the sprue is numbered. for example you take rifle arms set 1, and add a rifle, SMG arms 2, and add an SMG etc.
don’t go by the pictures, stick to the numbered list of componets.
Trust me, I’ve built nearly 500 of the buggers.
I’ll echo the prevailing sentiment on the boot camp. I think it is a great idea, @warzan. I only wish I lived closer so I could take advantage of the opportunity you are offering. I have no doubt that this is going to be a GREAT event. Heck, I’d attend just for the Wings and Pints!!!
Maybe I’ll get my chance when you guys come to my hometown for GenCon 😀
Now GenCon would be great to meet some of the backstagers. We sold a few castles when I was a teen to TSR, I never got to go but would love to hang out with fellow hobbyist
Gaming Bootcamp sounds awesome, especially with DZC as the featured game. I’m very interested, although I’m not sure yet if I can commit to it.
Since I would be flying in from the Netherlands I would also need an extra overnight stay on Sunday. Otherwise the flight schedule forces me to leave the party early, which would be a waste.
Will the bootcamp be filmed/reported on?
Great show guys. I am really interested in Fiction Fridays. 🙂
Hi,
I’d be interested in the boot camp as well (hope I’m not too late).
I’d be flying over from Germany so would need an extra night accomodation for Sunday night.
When will we find out? As I’d need to book flights as soon as possible.
Thanks,
Pete
I would like to sign up for the event, I will be coming in from Canada though so squaring away the details ahead of time will be important for me.
Thanks
Regarding a Historic Game with a good starter, I am surprised Warren didn’t mention FoW and the Open Fire Box. That was my first introduction to the game and felt it was all pretty straight forward and well documented how to assemble everything.
Am I too late to register an interest?
I’ve been wanting to get into Dropzone for a long time and total emersion sounds like the best way to do it.
Will we need to have read and understood rules prior or will it all become clear over the 2 days?
I mean register interest in the bootcamp. sorry I’m new to this tinternetty stuff!
Wow… I’m watching from Canada and the price for just the boot camp is not that far off what I’d pay for the starter set by itself!
