Lately I’ve lost my enthusiasm for RPG’s… for gaming in general.
It’s bad enough when you’re a player, but as the GM it can destroy games. If I’m not interested in the story…how can I expect the players to be?
Does anyone else struggle with gaming mojo?
I very rarely did GM in my RPG days. I have the highest respect of anybody keeping a group of gamers “in line”. My two most played with GMs had become a lawyer and a teacher later so I think there is a hint in that 😉
On loosing your mojo in general I think it’s best to not force yourself. Be open with it with your players and maybe let someone else do the work with one offs for a time. And if that still feels to much work on you: take a brake. Do something completely different. And yes that is also meaning if you don’t want to do anything but to watch some TV and munch snacks for a while than that is fine too.
Trust your gut. Mojo comes back sooner or later but it can’t be forced.
On average I watch less than hour of TV, but lately I’ve been rewatching Babylon 5.
As for rpg, I’ve had a break as GM. Last night was first game back.
Board games are possibility, but I still end up explaining the rules to everyone.
I think that is what frustrates me. Whatever we play, I know rules better than everyone else, including the GM. No one else learns the rules, they just ‘clock in’ at game time, play the game and ‘clock off’ at the end.
I see that frustration point. Maybe attend some gaming conventions where other people do demos and join on of those?
Sidenote: I’m on a rewatch of DS9 XD
Mojo comes and goes. Like @sundancer said, taking a break is the key.
You also seem to have leadership skills, which will mean you can take on too much naturally. I used to run my club, and it led to burnout. Just showing up and playing is so much more fun than making sure everyone is also having fun, putting out drama fires, ensuring the needs of the club are met sometimes at the cost of a few. It’s a burden.
Step back, play, don’t lead.
