    ### Start of shameless copy and paste ###

First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/introduce-yourselves-new-member-thread/

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/

Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.

First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.

You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.

If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.

A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil. This includes no philosophy, no home computer culture wars.

Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.

Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)

And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is The Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv

If you fancy to see some nice WIP pictures go to the WAYPN thread https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/what-are-you-painting-now-2025-edition/

    ### End of shameless copy and paste ###

    Question of the week:

    • Growing old: what happened to you and how do you deal with it?

And now back to the show.

Da pledge: enjoy the next 9 days as much as possible. They are the only days I have time of work simultaneously with my wife. So you won’t be seeing much of me. I think.

Da Answer: Since I’ll be hitting 50 soon this is really something nagging in my brain. Most noticable in regards to hobby: my eyes are getting worse. Magnifying glasses. Breaks between painting sessions and all that jazz. Also cuts don’t heal that quickly any more as they did in my 20s. And best not speak about my back hurting when sitting at table for anything painting or internet. The back hurts!

    Da Music: For reasons!

Pledge of the week. Finish painting the 0200 Hours miniatures.

Getting old sucks. I’m trying to get another sick note (sorry… they call them fit notes now in UK) as this Achilles thing is lingering. I’m find in the house, but if I go for a walk to do some essential shopping the pain kicks in by the time I get back and that’s only a mile round trip.

At work I walk an average of 10-12 miles a day carrying 10 to 15 kilos and when I’m not walking, I’m standing so thats 4 hours walking and the other 4 standing. And that’s not including the walk to work and rest of the days activities.

I’m trying to deal with it doing the exercises, but two weeks and it’s not fixed yet.

And then there are the floaters in my eyes. Bloody annoying when I’m trying to read, or paint. Old age is not kind to vision.

But I’m doing my best to deal with it. Some days are better than others.

Sorry about the whining… but you did ask @sundancer

it’s not whining when it’s a fact like an injury I feel. Plus I started the whining XD

you’re not fifty yet and already feeling it @sundancer ?
Growing old is gonna suck like heck if that’s where you’re are at the moment …

I’ve started to notice grey hairs … which is the only thing that reminds me that I’m over the halfway mark.
And glasses. Yeah, needing them to read stuff is not fun. I’d say that at the last BoW bootcamp was the first time I really noticed that I my eyes couldn’t focus on tiny things like they used to. Things really hit home when I got new glasses a year ago and I had +2. I still think my current glasses aren’t set up as good as the ones I had before. If only I hadn’t lost them somewhere.

    Anyways …

I finally got my Port Royal pledge today. I think someone at UPS made a mistake when updating the tracking status. Not sure if I should retract the claim I made, but I’ve at least informed Firelock of the status so it’s all good. The pickup point wanted to charge me taxes + stuff (I guess the UPS app on their side was not showing the correct info either …), but since I could show them that I had paid already in my credit card app things were resolved.

    Things to do …

    20250726_112113(1)

Yarr … still need to finish my flooring tiles in my hobby space. I know I’ve said this a few times before, but I blame the weather for this. I can’t function properly when it’s hot outside. Maybe that’s what getting old is for me, but then I can’t recall ever liking warm weather.

    Music …

This week’s pledge is to do another skin tone model.

    • Growing old: what happened to you and how do you deal with it? – I’m 40 so luckily nothing age related has affected my health or hobby yet. On a purely cosmetic note in the past year I noticed my ears getting hairier. Not sure how common that is but I guess the saying “you’ll get hair in new places” applies to all stages of life, not just puberty.

Happy Weekend everyone.  Looks like you are going to be busy with all of that Blood & Plunder @limburger  Here I’ve been enjoying some sport ball, my teams (British & Irish Lions & England Mens Cricket) are doing very well.  Let’s hope that continues with the Women’s Footballers tomorrow.

Pledge:  Still plugging away with the Draugr and I’m also working through building 3 boxes of Victrix Republican Romans and Latin Allies.

Answer:  I’m over fifty and my eyes went about 5 or 6 years ago.  I had a career where staring at computers was important and that focal length seems to have worn out.  I had my eyes tested and I need and use 1.5x magnifier glasses.  I buy super cheap ones and have pairs everywhere around the house, in every coat and in the car – still find myself without a pair from time to time.  I’ve started to use 2.0x magnifiers for detailed painting work.  Not a concern – you can get up to 3.5x very easily so I’ve got plenty of scope yet 😀
My short term memory is shot but that is probably stress related rather than just my age.  Not being able to find the right word for things is frustrating as well, that is an age thing.  Physically it isn’t too terrible.  You are aware that stuff will go (strains, muscle pulls, etc.) but it usually announces itself in advance so you have time to get it sorted or work round it.  I have to be less carefree with eating and drinking but as a result I’m fitter so that’s a bonus.

Oh please don’t remind me. What was once a “get drunk on Friday and be up and running again at Saturday afternoon” has become a “get drunk (after two beers) on a Friday and start having memories again on Sunday evening” XD

As you get older you find hair grows everywhere… and when you see a grey nasal hair it’s just wrong!

Except on the top of your head. There it will only get less and less.

I took a break for six months and when I got my paints out, I found I’ve become one of those guys who has to hold things at arms length to get them into focus. That was a real wake up call! It turns out I’ve got a fixed focal length now.  That, and the barber asking if I wanted the tops of my ears shaved when I went for my last haircut (hey, at least he didn’t ask if I wanted them styled).

I’m also celebrating the half-century this year. Some days I can’t believe it’s gone so quickly.
I’ve come to the conclusion that everyone has a lifetime salad quota. And a sausage rolls and pies and chips quota. You have to eat so many green vegetables over the course of your life. Clever folk spread them out over years and years. But some of us burn through our pies and chips quota too early in life and then have to live off salad to keep the cholesterol in check! It all evens out over time. I’m currently having to get the salad side of things up to balance.

Getting old sucks, but everybody’s doing it.
How to deal with it? Rest more.
There’s nothing more invigorating than a power nap.
And good socks. Invest wisely – buy yourself some good socks for the winter (nordic socks are amazing).
But don’t succumb to getting old. Don’t ever succumb. Look after yourself. But keep going!

    Pledge: Do some more hobby

In the meantime I will add that I will avoid killing my brother’s dog or unleashing hell upon the furry fiend. So far she has eaten a packet of dried mushrooms I had on a counter, licked a cast iron skillet clean of the seasoning from off the stove (not on and very much cold) and consumed a portion of my DAS clay that was sealed in a bag. I remind myself that she is merely a dog and only intelligent with regard to getting at food. Beyond that she has no regard for humans. Atleast with a cat there are expectations. This seems like wilfull stupidity.

Getting old seems to be a continuing issue. Continued system maintenance appears to be more difficult and, unlike the site, a widespread overhaul is not entirely possible. In general getting glasses and watching the calorie intake helps. I also vow to get my big projects worked on and finished before the time I need to hang it all up.

@sundancer As it keeps getting repeated, nobody gets out alive. Do what you do and just add a stretching regimen. You’re ahead of many with your biking. Oh, and hair seeds only migrate south, like birds… but they never seem to go back north.

@limburger The heat and cold both suck. Don’t worry about the tiling unless you’re just putting it off to avoid it further.

@danlee That reminds me of the fluff from the Nosferatu clan book from long ago and how they turned after the Embrace. If “Head, shoulders, knees and toes’ is the checklist of what tou need to wax regularly you might as well give up. 😆

@zoidpinhead Yeah, a bit of that doing construction work but you can get away with more if you move from the field to management or the shop. I’m neither but I’ll have to bust my butt that much harder. Then again it might mean a sidestep into service work over installation.

@blinky465 ::checks his ration:: Ehh.. I think I’m still good to ease down the beer quota. On the bright side my vodka consumption is in the green! Right, the salad quota can be accepted with this mitigating fact.

the older you get … the need for longer arms becomes a thing 😉

@zoidpinhead technically that’s the tip of the iceberg … got a whole heap of blood&plunder bits from their previous kickstarters. And there’s that Blood&Bayonets soon(ish).

At least Epic Warpath won’t be shipping any time soon.  I like too many things and can’t pick a favourite.

@horati0nosebl0wer I need to finish it as it keeps me from using the room for its intended purpose. At least the temperature appears to have gone down. Now I only need to find my focus/motivation again.

The shenanigans with my port royal pledge drained a lot of energy.

I get this from my sister a lot – she’s just 12 months behind me, fast reaching her own 21-again-birthday.
And she insists that she doesn’t need reading glasses yet…. just longer arms!
I reckon I’ve got another two or three inches to go 🙂

(that said, x1.5 and x2 magnification glasses for painting…. wouldn’t be without them now)
