Last year was dominated by Miami Vice – I watched all 5 seasons, bough some suitable minis from Crooked Dice and dressed up as Sonny Crockett for Halloween – the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – I watched all 4 TV series, all movies, bought a bunch of Turtle-related items and painted all the miniatures in the IDW Shadows of the Past board game box – and, towards the end, Cthulhu – I read several post-Lovecraft anthologies and painted all the minis from the first edition of the Mansions of Madness board game, so I have decided to make ’26 the year of classic fantasy.
I am going to try to read as many pre-Tolkien novels as I can manage, starting with William Morris’ The Wood beyond the World, which is often called the very first modern fantasy novel. I am currently about halfway through the book, and so far, the only fantasy elements are the fact that it is set in an imaginary land and that there is a creature described as a ‘Dwarf with tusks’. Other than that, it reads more or less like a romance novel written in very archaic English. I suspect Mr. Morris may have had some issues with women in his life.
