Let’s Play: Bolt Action Beach Assault
November 21, 2016 by dignity
Justin and John go head to head with Warlord Games newest Bolt Action Second Edition.
Get your snacks and beverages ready because we're in for a long ride. Justin's invading the beachfront and John has a tough time holding him off the sandy shore.
The miniatures in these games were painted by our very own community member @suetoniuspaullinus.
This amazing Beach mat is from Deep Cut studios and we're super excited to get more games on with it!
Who do you think will win?

So right around the hour mark John pits a pin on Justin’s unit that kills his Willy…
That moment when you click play and the video is 2:27 long!!! Guess I wont be watching it all in one go then 😀
@dignity @johnlyons A sniper given a fire or ambush order can use his scope and gets a range of 36″.
Yeah we did miss that. I shall re-educate myself in the Gulag 😉
John does an impression of Ruairí McSorley. Class.
Thanks Lads …. I’ll finish this one after work but I love these…(although I can see myself playing Bolt action before to long …damn another game)
The mat is awesome
Btw: the mat you guys using is that pvc or cloth?
Thanks very much, @johnlyons and @dignity for the shout-out at 3:10. 😀 Definitely a different take on Sea Lion . . . seeing that Panther run up the beach definitely got my attention. 😀
Ran an Omaha Beach landing game last year with the almost the exact same victory conditions – four bunkers and a beach exit draw (so five objectives in all), whoever wound up controlling at least three wound up the winner.
I love these Let’s Plays, even the long ones. Especially the long ones, actually. Put it on the background or headphones while crushing out spreadsheets at work, or building terrain or even playing at game at home.
Now my Newhaven beach landing in Sea Lion Part 3 looks pretty sad by comparison. 😀

Fun game to watch, but man did you guys miss a lot of 2nd ed rules. And I haven’t even played it yet! 🙂
when shooting at the rear of a vehicle the you get +2 pen,
but other than that really good game
I cant use the German Bias excuse anymore 🙁 Back to the books for me 🙂
Very interesting scenario. I am going to have to remember some of the special rules you guys came up with when I play some Pacific island assaults.
That’s also a very nice looking table setup. I couldn’t resist any longer, I bought one of the those Deep Cut Studio Beach mats.
love the table & battle report.
Love this one guys! The alternate history, the bunker rule, panthers on the beach! Great stuff man. I’m new to bolt action and love to watch you guys play cause I learn more about the game every time. All the lets plays are great. Keep them coming, the more thorough the better I say.
Thanks guy !
great game very enjoyable …..would have liked to see a anti tank gun in the bunkers and mortars behind the beach and maybe the germans running a flamethrower or two to deal with the bunkers :)….. but great way to spend a couple of hours watching as i build m3s
I forgot to say this earlier, I definitely liked @johnlyons ‘ “BBC” news broadcast at the beginning. And great miniatures by @suetoniuspaullinus , 😀 together with John’s tanks that keep winding up in Justin’s army. 😀
Operation See John Lyon, watching a tank dude redo a redo scenario.
Looking good boys.
That terrain map is awesome guys, definitely inspired me yet again!!
love the board and the premiss of the game…. Missing a lot of rules there though :o( but hey its your game and as long as you both had fun….
I will admit that we got stuff wrong. I think I was too excited to throw in some custom rules that my focus fell on them.
I’ve watched half so far..hard to find the time at the moment..
But it’s epic, I’m enjoying every second!! Never mind the rules as long as it so gentlemenly and good natured. For me this is what gaming is all about!!! Two thumbs up so far 😎
Agree 100% on the “roolz.” And those are some badass infantry minis, @suetoniuspaullinus .
And @stusidle – We’re running a Panzer Leader game at the moment with a full battalion (450 men) of German paratroopers. A few were lost / scattered in the drop, but even those that have landed / consolidated aren’t having the easiest of time. With improved positions and some town hexes, the Home Guard are making a bloody account of themselves!
Great fun, shame John didn’t have any home-guard units patrolling the area… they don’t like it up ’em!
Also can’t help but feel that it should be at least a 6+ to wound if you’re in a bunker (as I think it is if you’re just in a standard building).
I may have to nick this idea, thanks.
Not to be a bugger but the supplies came from Canada and the States. Through canadian waters and with the Canadian Navy. After Dec 7 with some Us Navy support.
That was American speaking…. lol
Great video to watch on my day off 🙂 thanks guys!
That was a good game to watch. Exciting until the last moment.
Finally, got to watch it to the end, so much to do so little time.
Loved the game, like the narrative scenario.
The tanks didn’t amount too much compared to how many times that they were activated, might have something to do with the sand and salt from the sea.
Seems the most rules they are missing are the new 2nd edition rules.
Only seen about 50 mins so far but I really would have loved to see you use landing crafts to bring troops is as I’m a bit foggy on these. Also, I thought the beach was rough terrain cutting movement. But all and all excellent video so far. Looking forward to getting time to watch it all. You guys make watching interesting with the informational tidbits.
Really nice terrain and inspirational. Shame you guys missed so many rules (makes me confused, wanted to brush up on the rules). But I haven´t paid for anything so can´t really complain. Keep up the good work.
Okay, I’m just gonna speak my mind here for a second. I really feel people need to back off just a little on all these rules issues. This was a friendly game off the cuff, recreating a scenario I don’t think Bolt Action was initially meant to recreate. I really enjoyed the special rules created for the scenario, and let’s be brutally frank for a moment . . .when it comes to any kind of historical realism . . . Bolt Action needs all the help it can get.
Furthermore, I’ve checked the Historical Gaming forums and don’t see these scholars of the law putting up their own Bolt Action games for critique, dissection, or public review. Just @clash957 ‘s games, which are really great (again, he has to plug in a lot of his own history to elevate the general system).
This was an awesome video I’ve now watched once, and listened to at least three or four more times while working or setting up Panzer Leader Sea Lion games. I hope a lot more are coming, and I don’t mind the long format at all.
Gotta say this video was a pleasure to watch gentlemen, please do this again soon!
@oriskany
Couldn’t agree more. BA isn’t a historical simulation but a Commando Comic kind of game. Rules matter of course but as long as everyone is happy accuracy doesn’t so much. The narrative/ scenario and seeing two gentlemen fighting it out is what makes it so fun to watch.
Love the satchel and mine field rules guys, well done!
A very enjoyable battle report, will have to watch it again. The beach battle mat is a nice piece, will have to see about picking one up after Christmas (so many scenarios running through my head).
Great scenery, love the layout of the beach front. The only thing`s missing for me was some tank traps and barbwire, other than that a great battle field. I am surprised that there where not more infantry in the German force, i mean a wall of flesh coming at you up the beach from the sea. I think it would make for more of a more enjoyable game, plus on the plus side more carnage blood gut`s and tear`s.
Off to work now, watching the battle report again this weekend.
Love to see this with K 47″ units…zombies coming up the beach etc……..
I agree @oriskany
Great vid bow and the house rules were a nice addition – added a bit of spice if anything 😉
What scale trains are those?
