Awesome video. Looks like you really enjoyed casting them @warzan maybe a new career in the works?!
Great video Warren, you looked like you enjoyed doing that..
Many years ago when I was a teenager I used to cast at home the the 40mm Prince August kits, which was fun until I spilt the hot metal on the kitchen worktop, My mum was not best pleased… Lol.
Funnily enough I was just there myself. Did you get across the road to the resin casting?
Great video. I never really knew what went into creating metal models apart from phrases like “spin casting” absolutely fascinating to see how it’s done.
very interesting, ‘how it works’ for gamers
Will BOW be getting a casting machine for your own minis?
Wow, for twenty minutes I could almost believe I was watching some daytime educational program on BBC 2!
And is that a good thing or a bad thing?
A good thing. Definitely a good thing. Mad presenting skills, my friend 😉
Surprised you didn’t put your own spin on it and do some Stug riders.
For some reason I thought there would be more too it.
I would love to see plastic and resin casting if at all possible?
Awesome little video! I’m an engineer, and have done sand casting and injection moulding, but this is the first time I’ve seen spin casting. I found the video really interesting and enjoyable!
It opens an interesting possibility to do a series of educational videos of the behind the scenes stuff of the hobby! Maybe look at the manufacture of paints, dice, plastic and resin models, flock, grass tufts, etc etc. That would be a great series to watch.
I agree 😉
Great video, something i’ve always wanted to try myself
its nice to see the work that goes into all the new shiny
Nice video, you thoroughly enjoyed that!
Next Warren will be taking Dr Brian Cox’s job from him and explaining to us Einsteins Unified Theory and solving the whole gravity problem.
The origin of chimp-pig-man could well be the television highlight of the year.
Thumbs up for the video and I agree that gravity is a real drag… did you see what I did there? Clever me.
you must have a blast with work like this…
Glad I finally got see how this side of the hobby is done. Big thanks guys ;0)
Good thing the aprons come in Wargamer size as well … it is only envy talking 😉
Wargamer and Xtra Wargamer
the only sizes you need!
Great vid! After speaking with the designers, you get to show us some other aspects of this industry. Really interesting. Should have been fun actually putting your hands to it. Congrats @warzan!
This reminds me of working as a jeweler and preparing lost wax molds and casing precious metals. Loved seeing this
Really fun! I’ve seen other casting videos on YouTube, but this is a really good one. Can we see a sculptors studio next? That’s something I haven’t been able to find (except for one by Westwind)… I still find I hard to believe a lot of it is sculpted by hand.
Great video Warren, I love seeing how things are made. Look forward to seeing resin casting sometime. 🙂
i would be really proud of myself if i were you Warren, first go and only a missing foot, if it was me, i’d be lucky to make the sprue filled up! great video, more of these would be awesome!
I hope you kept the guy with the missing foot,
whoever wins those models should be proud to have a Warren special
Some tidbits to complement the video. The mould Warren was using is made from silicon, the black moulds are made of rubber. The rubber comes from recycled F1 tyres. Warlord get through about a ton(ne?) of metal each month. The impurities rise to the surface and are skimmed off into containers which are picked up and removed by the company they get the metal off. GW’s metal contains (or contained) no lead and did contain trace amounts of precious metals. GW sold this precious metal wastage on. Bryan Ansell is responsible for spin casting being the primary method of metal mini casting in the industry.
Now that where interesting tidbits
Well looking forward to watching this
Cracking vid, Warren. Nice to have a behind the scenes look at where miniatures come from.
Warren is a madman!
Something tells me there is a H&S manger sat behind his desk mumbling Wibble repeatedly.
That was awesome, Warran!
It’s always really interesting to see how different companies make their products!
You going to use those tank riders yourself, or did they go back in the pot?
those are the ones you can win by commenting here 😉
Great vid!
Really enjoyed that vid I to hope to see more behind the scenes casting, sculpting vid’s
Nicely done. Now you’ll have a little more cause to paint up all those pewter minis in your collections.
Great video, tank riders de Warren. Box them up with some of GW’s drybrush range of paints and you have a winner.
It could start a new line for minis, you could have a whole product line of celebrity cast minis, Maggie Smith’s Sisters of Battle, Peter Dinklage’s Forgefathers,Robbie Coltraine’s Orc’s , although I think cameron will have to steer clear of kingdom death given his recent stance on corrupting the children.
Good vid, would like to see a future vid showing how some of the company’s produce their paint ranges.
Great vid, you did your very best to include all aspects of the process. As one who once taught engineering I would highly recommend this for primary reading. Unfortunately you did miss out on fettling the dross.
The Dross is the waste material (mainly metal oxides) that floats on top of the molten metal.
Fettling is the act of removing the gates, vents, and generally cleaning up the casting.
Note the black molds are vulcanised rubber whereas the cream molds are this new fangled silicon.
Very interesting. Just spin and pour. I always imagined it being more complicated and involving more machines.
That was genuinely interesting guys thanks. It took me half the vid to realise the irony that the Celt slingers I was basing very likely were made in one of the machines you were using there. Cool!!!
great video, really interesting to see!
All I can say is: that was REALLY cool!
Really interesting video. I didn’t get a chance to go no the tour at the open day so I was quite pleased to see this uploaded.
I second the suggestions to try and do other videos like this if you get the opportunities. We’re all geeks and I’m sure it’s not just miniatures that interest us 😀
That was really interesting. Wonder if Warlord have any application forms …… Really good video Warren. Next time, try and do some plastic molding and ask to do a Stug.
that was great. A nice series of videos would be the entire behind the scenes process from concept art/rules (whichever comes first) to initial sculpting, to mold making, casting, then packaging and sale. Did you get to see some plastic sprues too or is that all in the far east?
I think Warlord use Renedra.
I have always wanted to see how that was done. great video
I would have thought Warren would have wanted German tank riders for his Stug?
Interesting video never seen casting before, wonder how many casting one person does a day, and how many troops that produces?
Did you see the Pegasus bridge model while you was there? I saw it on a youtube video of their open day, looked well cool.
very interesting to see how it all works
