Guild Ball Week: Kick Off! Demo Game
April 24, 2017 by dignity
If you have the Guild Ball Kick Off! Starter Set you'll have read the Kick Off! Rulebook and played through the first turn of the game covered within its pages.
For this demo game, we take it from the second turn with the Mason Guild having the advantage over the Brewers by having scored during turn one.
Watch Guild Ball Week
Bryce from Steamforged Games has control over the Masons hoping to build on that early advantage while Justin playing the Brewers is hoping to reduce that deficit. Can he do it?
Prizes To Be Won
During this week you could win One of Three Copies of the Guild Ball Kick Off! Starter Set as seen in this Demo Game.
All you’re going to need to do is comment on the videos this week across Facebook, YouTube and Beasts Of War to be in with a chance of winning this fantastic prize.

I like the rules, i like the miniatures, i want to play that game.
Do it you won’t regret it.
Guild Ball is an awesome game, glad you’re doing this week
Have the Hunters and the Brewers here. Next Team will be Fisherman or Butcher
I like the game so far. I wish you guys would produce more products in plastic though. These appear high quality so why not product sets in the same material.
All new teams will be in plastic, with tokens and themed scenery piece. Early minis were metal as the company launched off kick starter 3 years ago. Farmers are the first of these out soon ..
I think the releases from season 3 onwards will be plastic, such as the upcoming Farmers Guild.
Come on the Brewers!
Very glad to see this game get more publicity.
this game just looks so much fun, the minis are awesome 🙂
Thanks for the game guys, this was fun.
My friend and i played our first game on sunday using the Kick Off box and i can say its a fantastic product (more plastic in the future please 😉 ). I played the masons and i love them.
The game is awesome and i looking the get my own team (well, probably more than one knowing myself…).
See you tomorow!
This game is tons of fun, and it’s surprisingly easy to pick up the rules. Best thing, you can download a free intro game, complete with paper cutout players and ball marker. So you really have nothing to lose just trying it out.
I’m really happy to see a big variety of smaller minis games coming out these days. From skirmish-size combat games to fun “sports” themed games like this and Dreadball, it’s getting easier and easier on my wallet to play a variety of games.
I love the look of this game, definately beats bloodbowl for the fatasy sports game I need to get. As much as I don’t think the brewers or the masons are my favourite looking guilds they definately seem the best choice for the one in the starter set.
Awesome
Nice one. I’ve seen a few playthroughs but this one’s a good deal clearer.
Loved this game the first time I saw it.
If you guys are going to get another game in this week, please do the morticians Vs the hunters, both are awesome looking guilds and I would love to see how they play on the table. Also why not try and get @warzan in to play another battle report as it seems a while since we go to see him gaming, hope he’s doing well.
Unlikely as they prefer recorded the stuff.
Poor Justin 🙁
I love this game so much :)! …
Cool looking game, but a bit chaotic if you’re not familiar with the rules.
A more in-depth look at the mechanics and special rules would be nice.
And totally off topic, but I have to ask: What is that accent Bryce is speaking that makes every sharp ‘i’ sound like an ‘è’? I’ve never heard it before and it’s kind of short-circuiting my brain.
to some degree it reminds me malifaux, with synergee between models, building complex momentum to hit harder. not simple quick game that you can play in evening and leave it for half year to come back again.
The more you play the more the game unlocks, and the more you can do, but the core rules are fairly simple.
Its interesting that the tutorial game starts with one side up a goal.
The booklet walks through to that point, so you learn the rules playing as it were.
My preferred game, tonnes of fun, encourages cool plays, massively tactical and a tonne of depth.
Damn it … you made me want to own this too.
I like how he couldn’t just end the game right then and there, but it does make me wonder how awful it must feel to not generate the momentum required to score a goal in such a situation.
This looks like it will be. A blast to play.
This looks like fun in a box.
Amazing box. I love those miniatures.
such a fun game
Nice to see the demo and love the pick up from the Kick Off Starter… nice to be able to compare some different decisions and see where things end up!!
I can see a fantasy football game in my future. My poor wallet!
I love this game. Trying to set a game up with my club.
will have to see if anyone in my group wants to go in on a box.
I picked up Kick off at salute so its good to see a demo game, looking forward to getting some games in. I don’t know if it will come later in the week but it would good if there was a video on where to go from the starter set.
great demo game to show how it all works and looks. Guild Ball really is a fun game and more people should try it 🙂
I’d really love to try this one. For me though the water colour like illustrations are backbone and gate to the whole game / setting. Looks wise I like individual members of almost all the teams, but some of the Mortician’s appeal to me a lot but asked to pick one single whole team The Union were my gang of choice.
Is there an alternative to the those tiny chits that I can see easily getting lost? Can you use 12mm dice instead?
For momentum most people keep track of it using a die.
I also want to shout out to the BoW crew. Since the start of the year, the production value of the play through is getting better. Thank you for showing a close up of the card they are speaking about. That is awesome. Great having the two camera shots as well so you can see the table.
One suggestion, when available, have a link to the rule book under the video. Seems like a simple add.
Been enjoying this for a few months now. Primary team is the Firshermen, but once I got my hands on the Kick Off! box I also started to really enjoy the Brewers.
Looks like another game I have to add to my collection
Great battle report and great game.
Loving these videos! Keep them coming!
Also, I need a drink. Beer me!
It is a fantastic game to play, I enjoy doing timed play, each player gets 45mins. It makes the game more exciting, as you really have to think quickly about what you need to do in order to score goals and/or take out the opposition.
Nice game. should have gotten into this years ago when it first came out and i was the only one at my LGS not playing it.
I’ve been tempted by this game for a while now. I will definitely be checking out their stand at the UK Games Expo.
@dignity dammit man, pick up the ball!
Looks like a fun and quick game to play.
Looks great guys!
I think I’m going to have to get me this game
Played a demo at a local Con and really liked it a lot.
Looking forward to seeing how the game is played and also see how the grudge matches go 🙂
Great video!
Looks like a fun game.
I never could get my head around guild ball, skirmish ball game sounded a bit weird. I played a lot of blood bowl back since the first release of it, even more so when they released it in the 90’s. No grid skirmish rules seemed a bit odd.
Thank you for the demo game that cleared a lot of questions I had. Kick off has been ordered now! Cant wait to get my hands on it.
I watched a few of the faction things yesterday along with this, and I have to say I am impressed. Its much more fleshed out than I thought it was, and the game itself looks fun.
Brewers guild all the way for me!
such a great starter
cool game
Great looking game.
Oooh I like the freedom of movement
SHOCK. a team Beasts lost in a demo game..
Commiserations Justin.
Seems quite fun.
The only type of this game I have played is Blood Bowl -and that was way back in the day. This seems to be way more melee focused from what I remember BB to be. More like Australian rules then Rugby /or/ American Football ??
*loss*
Thanks for this one, ive not actually seen it played before so it really helps. Makes me want the masons even more. Looks like such a fun little game!!
Nice!
Awesome game, but the Mason’s look a little more complicated than the Brewers.
So… Nice to see the rules. And it’s actually more a hybrid Skirmish/Sport game.
Miniatures and the Guild themselves are amazing, love the Artwork on the Cards too.
But I need to play it to say if I’m liking this game or not. ^^
Rules seems rich but a bit too heavy in my opinion with the ressource management, Templates, ruler, etc. to maintain a frenetic action that Blood Bowl have for example.
This game have great mechanics, and could provide much fun.
Great game guys!
Looks like a good starter box.
I like the ability to counterattack and the interesting mechanic of selecting the effect you want to apply rather than just slapping damage over the opponent.
Looks good so far. I’ll have to give this game a try 🙂
Looks good, been missing a lot of updates cause of work commitments but got work to pay for the mini’s…. i mean beer…. Bills
What i have to wait ?
Wow! Initial thought was “seems a bit complicated”……then I realised I wasn’t really paying attention, so yeah, me likey!!!
Great game guys, looked like a lot of fun.
Brilliant. Some interesting mechanics there and a great finally that I didn’t see coming!
MASONS FTW!!!!
Seems like a very fun game
The playbook mechanism in Guildball is really interesting. The way lots of successes unlocks more choice rather than just more damage. It also allows the individuals to play very differently as the playbook fixes the results a certain player can get whilst sharing the same mechanic. Looking forward to catching up with the rest of the week.
Just opened up my own starter recently, and it’s amazing value for money. Plastic miniatures are pretty good too.
A really great game!
Let’s go Masons!!
I really, really like this game…
Thanks guys!
If I dont win in I might just have to buy it!
Thanks for this demo game, certainly got my interest
I’m still a bleacher bum with Guild Ball (Kick Off on order, though!) so I’m really loving these videos.
And I really love the byplay between the guys here. You can imagine them as two guys facing off across a kitchen table, the guy from Steamforged (missed his name) as the guy who’s read the rules, and Justin as the friend he’s roped into playing this. All that’s missing is a couple of pints and it would be perfect.
I can see what all the fuss is about now. great rules set from what we’ve seen so far, probably top tier. I don’t play sports games anymore personally, can’t play everything, but if I did i’d play guildball.
Justin, I think you dropped the ball on this one!
What a way to lose though!! gonna coin the new phrase “Brick-Kicked”
I had only an intro game a while back and was impressed by the mechanics. Now I must see that we did a lot wrong and that the mechanics are even better if you do them right. Looking forward to more games.
I really like all the different tactics you can play. How the game seems to shift and turn and change, depending on what your opponent is doing. Looks like loads of fun.
Finally bought the kick off set about two weeks ago. Played my first game last Sunday and really loved the game.
I like the models, but I just don’t get the feeling that this is a sports team so much as guys I’d have in Zombiecide or Mordheim.
Great game, have played it with my brother a lot. Need to win my own copy!
Nice play through to watch and looks like a great box.
I don’t think there’s a more complete starter set out there in terms of full rules, all tokens and measuring stuff (twice) and 2 full teams. Incredibl.
Cool show!
It is a fun game, I already have the Brewers Guild,
i need that box asap
I am sure this would begin to make sense after a few games, but even with the cool stat cards at hand you really need to know your team’s abilities inside and out to really appreciate and understand the game.
I like the momentum mechanic and think that some epic moments are bound to occur. I like that even though some of the action is brutal, that there is still a humorous side in the drunken brawling nature of the brewers and the animals / mascots involved from each team.
I hope that the range continues looking towards plastic minis and that reasonable cost and new starters will remain the focus beyond ‘kick off’, at least for a while.
i love these miniatures
You guys have done it again….. I now need this game, the kickoff starter set looks really amazing with all the tokens and the printed board. Really awesome way to get into the game, I like it and I will be heading over to the store shortly……
Look`s like someone had a few to many, running past the ball and thinking…….what`s that for.
Great play through guy`s, but i`m gonna have to watch it a few more time`s…………have to try and understand Justin`s “Plan of Attack”, which we all know he had one, but what was it.
Why is Mallet allowed “to strike at 3″away (min.28:40). On the card that is shown it says melee range 2″or do I miss something?
Love the Demo games
I must admit the one thing keeping me away from the game is the metal mini’s 🙁 . It must be old age, but i have developed an almost pathological unwillingness to work with metal for my hobby. I’ve seen comments talking about a shift to plastic for Season 3 and onwards, does anyone ( from Steamforged or otherwise ) have any more information on the plastic releases ? Once it goes plastic, i’m looking at Masons and Hunters for myself.
This game is awesome, it would be great to add two factions to the collection as well.
i hope the minis not like pp plastic, pp starters are great disapointment for me
good walkthroug. looks like a good and flowing game
The more I see of this game, the more impressed with it I am!
So tempted to get this, need to pick up the kick off set.
Really nice to see Guild Ball and this video is brilliant for new players like me for walking us through the rules step by step.
That looked sweet
