for the area above the head what about some sort of AA setup either missile or quad gun with defence wall type balustrades or a mixture of?
i dont think something that size wouldnt have air defence otherwise its an easy missile kill. just look at warships and aircraft carriers they have sea whiz (phallanx for us brits) and other anti missile missiles / radar guided guns.
likewise the leg area waist down should have an area denying defence mechanism for against those daring suicidal mech busting infantry and their satchel charges designed to take out joints. flamers or miniguns maybe something murderous with a limited close quarter range say 10 0r 12 inch
Mate I am not now and probably will never be into 3d printing but I am really enjoying this series, As I get to see Warzan the hobbyist a bit more.
With regards to what Space Marines Chapter you could tie it to, I have a couple of suggestions. First of all as I have no doubt you know, no space marines actually have Titans BUT as I see it there are real options. Firstly it could be a chapter that has strong ties to the Adeptus Mechnicus like the Irond Hands and their successors which means that if you don’t like the chapter’s colours you could always just use a Forge World from the adeptus Mechanicus book instead.
Alternately if you want to have the same theme across the entire army , and since you are “Mr Gaming in the Gaps” why not have the Titan act the same an Imperial Knights “Freeblade”. He is the last of his Legio and as a debt of honour is fighting alongside this Space Marines Chapter to repay them and adopts their colours until his debt is repaid … (or altenatelt the clours in his heraldry , happen to be the same as his adopted Chapter (I love coincidence, it is very handy)
Anyway regardless of what you decide I am keen to see what you do next , All the best
friend if you have any inkling for things technical like a challenge and head scratching moments then 3d printing is a great addition to your hobby. i used to be an aircraft engineer many moons ago although will freely admit to the grey matter going into decline with years of health issues.
That said watching Dawn and Gianna getting into it and the possibilities of making stuff cheaper for my hobby (mainly terrain) i bought a self assembly kit and set to work. has it frustrated me yes at times, have i wanted to throw it out of the window again yes at times lol but even with those moments it gets you thinking and using the grey matter plus there is always a buzz with a successful print. Now im getting better at the printing side having read into and heavily modified my machine all from all self printed parts. i have the fun of learning a new skill the actual designing of parts.
i can help out my local club making bits for them and even the failures come in handy with basic modelling skills as battlefield debris. You obviously are into the narrative side of your hobby why not have skills to bring those narratives to life with custom pieces and terrain? basically i suppose im saying dont rule it out, ive found it rewarding and challenging both in equal measure but am glad i had a go, it can integrate nicely with our hobby.
likewise you will be surprised by just what family members want printed its madness lol
ive done Halloween cookie cutters for my baking mad sister and a custom bird house for another maxing out the capabilities of my build bed. seeing that my pensioner father wants all sorts doing for his shed his list continues to grow……..(sighs)
for me its been the best £120 i have paid in a long time, if you have a mate with one go for a coffee and look see and if you decide to have a go i wish you all the fun i have had
I like the model and I don’t mind the “roughness” of it. But some parts you pointed out are just terrible and brake the immersion for me. Like those wooden bits or the gun barrels that look like pipe isolation glued very badly together.
For the bits I don’t mind a lot of piping and cabeling. I imagine you can armor up pipes and cables pretty well in the 41st millenium. If you make them look armoured it’ll be ok. Like give them a meshy look as if some kevlar or something is wrapped around it. Or a hexagon look for some kind of ablative armouring. It only needs to be strong enough to resist like heavy bolters and maybe lascannons. I think all the bigger stuff (like volcano cannons) can’t be aimed that precise to hit piping.
For the story I’m not sure about Space Marines having these things. I think in a book I read some Grey Knights were hunting such a beast. But nevertheless I always believed if a Space Marine Captain or even Chapter Master wants something, he takes it. Including starships, titans, planets and the rulers daughter of said planet. So if you want to make that thing an Imperial Fist: go for it. That would acutally make a lot of sense, as this titan would be quite handy during the siege of a fortress of something. I imagine someone like Lysander or vorn Hagen standing on that plattform while watching the titan bombard some emplacement far away. But don’t make it entirely yellow. Just go for the big armour plates in yellow. Leave the guns, pipeing and working struts in grey/metal to give it a look similar to the weapon-sponsons on a Land Raider.
Make a SUNFURY PLASMA ANNIHILATOR!
Or if you wanted to be really special, convert yours to a Warlord-Sinister Psi-Titan.
http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Psi-Titan which is the most epic of all warlord titans and FW doesn’t yet produce the model, so your imagination (and 3D modelling skills) are the limit.
With the return of the ultramarines primarch in 40k and the fact he is the new warmaster in all but name, he could send a titan maniple to aid any chapter he wanted too, so a warlord aiding a chapter of marines is totally believable.
No Space Marine chapter owns a titan, they are own by the Adeptus Mechanicus.
For the fence you could try and do something like you would see on a warship. The one that is like metal posts with wire/rope between them. I think the paint job should be bold as it is supposed to be imposing. Although you could paint windows and such on it to disguise it as a building but I really doubt anyone would mistake it for one. That would be a bit of a shock to the enemy if they did.
About the railings at the top, i have 2 hypothesis . Either the doors are for easy access to the top for maintenance and the worker hook safety lines somewhere, or the titan was designed by an engineer from the star wars universe which means he has no concern for safety or doesn’t know what railings are.
Great vlog, i too love that Titan. I have one of the older EPIC Warlord Titans that he has scaled up to create this lovely looking monster.
*Puts titan nerd hat on*, Marine chapters never have Titans in them, so don’t paint it up with any chapter scheme or iconography. The Titan Legions were self contained forces within the Mechanicum, with many worshipping the Omnissiah before / beside the Emperor.
I would go with printing Ad-Mech iconography, ( maybe think of an icon to represent the Legion you want as well ) plus the arm mounted weapons and give it a bright colour scheme ( Legions have thier own to serve as an identifying mark ) as opposed to a camo scheme. Caveat being this is mainly based off 30 year old fluff knowledge from the old Adeptus Titanicus game 🙂 .
I would go with printing Ad-Mech iconography in red black and white The new Ad-mech codex gives you some nice options to choose from.
No to Space Marine Titans.
It could have similar colours though if you wanted to keep a unified look to your army, and like Knights they could bear an honour marking of a Marine Chapters icon representing that they served, or are serving together in a campaign or something…
For the top ‘deck’ I think it’s best left bare with no fence. It’s there as armour to protect the head from above, not a viewing platform. The head is already where any commander would survey the battlefield from, so best to go with your idea of the Aquila icon to give it some detail instead.
I know there are doors there, but that’s the model maker’s choice. They’d probly only be accessible during servicing at a Titan hangar with gantries etc. all around…
It’s tempting though, so at most I’d go with kind of a ‘hand-rung’ type setup like you see around the top of a Knight’s cockpit – which could be a theme on the rest of the model too, to add more detail (and show scale)?
As an extra detail currently missing though, you’ll notice on all patterns of Warlord Titan, they have giant ‘piston’ type things sitting horizontally at the sides of their hip/waist, which this model is lacking.
I noticed in the video there is a perfect gap at the waist to attach such a cylindrical shape, with a solid flat area to glue to, so it should be pretty simple and would add some authenticity.
As for camo, this being based on the Lucius pattern Warlord it is probably more fitting to have camo than heraldry, since that’s what’s most depicted in artwork of these type.
Heraldry seems to be more suited to Mars pattern /Beetleback, although the original Adeptus Titanicus box art had them with camo on top and heraldry beneath… which makes sense since they do seem most armoured against attack from above too.
I agree with you point on practicality and so, but considering the all-around looks of imperium and all so adeptus mechanicus I can se the Titan asi as more then just a war machine just look at Yarics fortress of arrogance http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Fortress_of_Arrogance
For the platform at the top, how aboout a 360 degree anti-air mount, similar to on Battleship turrets in WW2, think the German super tank (the one with 11″ guns) had them.
Doesnt seem like it has any AA defences.
I think the yellow would look great, just pick a Titan Legion or House that has a strong yellow scheme, there were a couple.
Visually it will tie to the Imp Fists, but it would also still fit if you want to have it with any of the other chapters
oh and for hiding the supports, apart from adding conduits you could also add in some pistons.
Ok my thoughts on the platform you could make a roof garden with sun loungers plant pots and some fake grass and some garden gnomes. And a nice white picket fence it would look amazing….lol
lol dick lol
lol
And a shrubbery,
With a split level effect
And a path
Don’t forget the Flaaaaaags! 😉
I understand that you are keen to 3D print everything but I wonder if that is the right route bearing in mind the print time. Could the main weapons not be produced using some plain plastic piping and the printer used to print add on extras to break up the shape? Some nice detailed muzzle breaks for example. It could also be an opportunity to change out one of the weapons, a fist would look good.
I’m enjoying watching your journey!
ssst … never apply logic to hobby projects.;-)
Especially whenever it involves recently acquired gear or material.
A 3D drawing of something is always useful.
Even if you use different materials to make it..
This is exciting. Reminds me of the days I was going to have a go at a warhound titan. The guns and other flat bits should be pretty easy to model in 3d. I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned this, but I would recommend SketchUp as your primary modelling software; it’s a) free, b) easy to use and learn, and c) most major 3d printers will provide free exporting plugins that will convert your sketchup file into a printable file. Like Thingiverse, SketchUp has a vast library of models called 3d Warehouse wherein you might very likely titan parts already made. I would stay away from modelling conduits and curvy things in 3d. Conduits are easily enough made by hand with some wire, whereas digitally modelling bendy tubing can take hours (especially a part that is to fit precisely to an existing location). Likewise, pistons might be more easily made with lengths of plastic rod, rather than digital modelling.
A fence along the top would be good to 3d print, but please make sure that whatever scene you put on the platform is reminiscent of a Black Forest cuckoo clock. Also, banners.
@warzan check out a few of these admech logo’s on thingiverse you can print out to add on to this bad boy!
https://www.thingiverse.com/search/page:1?q=mechanicus&sa=&dwh=7059c523321c770
also, i’m pretty sure i felt a disturbance in the force when you mentioned painting this yellow. i think John just cried out in pain
@warzan
The Titan houses are seperate and on their own, aside from the Imperial Navy / Imperial Guard and Space Marine chapters, but they are controlled by the Adeptus Mechanicus so I would go with Mechanicum symbols.
As for the guns, nothing beats a huge ass gatling gun!
It needs a rail like on SeaCat – otherwise people would just blow-off 🙂
Aegis defence line along the top? or would that ruin the block outline
Well, the Weapons can be made in more than one section. two or three bits to gain the length you need.
The imperial forces all had them I believe so any force could have one painted in their colours.
you did 7th edition was there no information in there.
This warlord titan looks a bit like the one from Space Marines the video game.
On top of the platform there is a little balustrade.
Titans have their own legions with markings and tapestries that hang from their frame. I know that some titans had markings of Space Marines if they fought along side space marines for a lengthy period. I think this is mentioned in some books from Forge World.
@warzan I quite agree anout the roughness of the model. Growing up scratch building was an essential aspect of the hobby. When I started if you wanted a Baneblade you had to build it from scratch, and GW even put plans in WD for one if I remember correctly.I also think people are a little spoilt these days with all the plastic kits, and terrain pieces, don’t get me wrong I think they’re great but I do feel a part of the hobby is lost and with that a chunck of the hibby skills.
Sorry hobby skills…
issue 132, I made two or three of them myself for a massive club game back in the day. Do you remember the ork vehicles they did as part of the same series, gobsmasher using a smartie tube and I’m sure there was something else… getting old apparently
its not rough its battle damage/field repairs.
Go Legio Ignatum ‘Fire Wasps’
Definitely in favor of adding a handrail to the top platform. The first thing I was thinking when you put the model on (maybe even before) was: “Oh, that looks dangerous.”
Of course then you can go with the classic Commissar, chain sword pointing forward, one hand on the rail, shouting orders to the troops below.
Apart from the places you mentioned I also feel the back looks kind of flat and uninteresting. I think you need some detailing there too. Perhaps some vents, hatches, defense mechanisms or maybe even some stowage.
A great place to look at all the color schemes for the Titan legios is here:
http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Titan_Legions_(List)
(scroll to near the bottom)
And if you are wanting a yellow scheme Legio Fureans (A traitor legio) is yellow with black flames. Could look striking, and who doesn’t want a Traitor Titan running Berserk up the table!
an imperial fists titan legion.?
is that pipe lagging for the guns @warzan armoured power cabling will look good on the titan.
I think both the back and front top platforms need a gothic balustrade, I also like the ideas of an AA gun, but I would mount it on the disc between the two high points of the structure above the platform, the disc already looks like a gun mount.
I would also go for AdMech symbols as this is far more in keeping with the fluff, but maybe have a banner of the affiliated chapter hanging between it’s legs, I remember the artwork featuring taffered banners here and on the top. you could make the banners interchangeable for the various imperil armies you have or build in the future.
I like the idea mentioned of having suitable placed grab handles/ladders, but think you do need some ground protection fire.
If you are having a commissar on top I think you would need some speakers, ether on legs are on platform or both.
Forgeworld do a set of titan crew models that could stand on your playform:
https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-SE/Titan-Crew-on-Foot
I think you could very reasonably use the shorter wall pieces that come in a kit like this one where there is an observation gallery:
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-NL/Sanctum-Imperialis
With changing the weight of the guns – have you considered how this might affect the model and if you are repainting it anyway, is there an opportunity to pin it with some metal rods to remove the wobble
I think the wall sections could offer protection from small arms fire rather than prevent the crew from falling off – I dare say that the magnetic boots that are described in a number of the audio books would prevent the crew falling out..
for the politics of surrounding the formation of the Adeptus Mechanicus and Titanicus the following audio book is a good listen
I would say no to the Space Marine Chapter. I imagine the higher lords would never accept a Space Marine Chapter having One of These. Just Think, they even Split the legions because Commanders shouldn’t have so much power.
For the guns. I Really like the FW weapons. Be it Plasma weapons or big gatling Guns or others types of Dark Technology…
For the heraldry I am a big fan of the Legio Fureans. The have a nice yellow/black colourscheme. I would even Add One of the Hanging Banners between their legs.
In QUICKLY READING the other posts, I did not see this recommendation. Why would you want to print the entire gun barrel? Why not use cheap pvc irrigation piping? Print greebles for the pipe that you can glue on it. I think that would save you quite a bit of time as well as each arm had three barrels to build/add.
BTW, you have inspired me. I purchased a Prusa clone and had it built but not running. Now we have a couple Printable Scenery buildings done, a Pinewood Derby VW Bus, and Lightsaber parts. The trouble I have at the moment is that the printer does not like printing from the SD card, so I have to leave my laptop plugged in to print. Sad Panda.
The knee joints look vulnerable from the front. I suggest some sort of kneepad armor that will both make the front of the legs look more protected and cover up any structural modifications you have to make. Piping or cables would look fine on the back on the knees.
Will adding plastic parts to the upper structures increase the weight? Will that unbalance the titan or strain the leg joints even more? Something to consider.
A Commissar has no place or authority on a Titan. The only time one would be on board is inside a transport pod, or in the legs of an Imperator.
An Emperor Class Titan is also the only kind that would have a place for standing ‘outside’ and observing the battlefield. Everything else should be inside within the armoured shell.
Exciting project! A few thoughts:
Rules wise, I can see the titan playing out something like this:
– Titan player picks a path for the Titan that crosses the battlefield, both players are aware of this (you can’t hide something like that).
– For the first turn or two, the Titan is off table, but can add fire support against basically anything – range is no issue, but perhaps you have to roll to request fire support?
– Then for maybe 2-3 turns, the titan crosses the table. I guess any buildings under its base would be destroyed, but perhaps models get a save roll to survive (place them in place on the titan’s base for that turn)
– Then the titan exits the table, never to be seen again…
As for printing, I second @tomatovich ‘s comment, although you could use something like PVC pipe as a starting point, then add detail with 3d prints. Printable scenery do this with their “Gothic Pipes”: https://www.printablescenery.com/product/gothic-pipelines/ the result is really effective and combines the best of both materials.
Oh yeah, as for colour schemes, painting it in urban camo seems a bit redundant for something that big, and plenty of other people have mentioned that the titan won’t belong to a chapter.
However… There’s no reason why a titan might not be “attached” to a chapter on campaign, and there’s plenty of scope to add campaign banners that, say, combine titan and space marine iconography.
for the top of the titan. you could style the wall like the top of the imperial bastion
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-NL/Imperial-Bastion
or print a wall with 3-5 gothic arches to go along the front of the shelf over head to make it look like a crown and use the knight carapace weapons as AA/ close support weapons on either side on the smaller parts of the “shelf”.
this would add just enough detail but not hide the carapace detail behind.
please please please, turn 1 of the arms into a Gatling Blaster. the titan deserves a massive gatling gun.
is there any type generator building scenery that could be altered to form a base of a large plasma gun? for example
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1680965
Hmm.. different beliefs about the lore from @warzan. I agree with an industrial look, a heavy industrial look. But I disagree with the idea that a Titan is NOT a Tech Priests ode to perfection and power, they spend the rest of their lives building these things and they make them awesome!
Of course, the Titan’s sent out to war zones are not always buffed and shined on their way to a new war zone. Maybe the large amount of servants, retainers, servitors and engine seers have suffered casualties? So the Titan has been… degraded since the last war zone.. what a shame!
