Weekender: Gaming At Different Scales & Are You The WWX Big Winner?
February 28, 2015 by lloyd
Wow, that was a big week. Not only did we have a lot of things going on behind the scenes with filming but we also had one packed with Wild West Exodus, just in case you hadn't noticed!
We'll be announcing the winner of the Town Marshal Pledge for the Wild West Exodus Kickstarter beginning on Monday AND you can still comment to win two more $30 Vouchers for their webstore over the weekend.
As well as that goodness we're talking about Bolt Action and the upcoming Boot Camp while also taking a look at another cool plastic kit from Warlord with their Tiger Boxed Set.
We're also talking about gaming at different scales, using Flames of War as a gateway, and also talking about Vesper-On's new game, Room Raiders.
Have a great weekend of gaming!

I was wondering why it was running late. Thanks for getting it out anyway, mates! I love the Weekender.
Wayhay. I got a shout out. Lol
And…
Noooooooooo… Now we have to much choice. I don’t like it.
( I kid, I kid. No please don’t hurt me. Arghhhhhhh! ) Lol
I would like to point out though. I was only playing Devil’s advocate with trying to point out a possible flaw in your Fury plan. :p
As for going to the boot camp. Honestly I’d bloody love to. Not 100% sure I can get the time off due to other people being off for medical reasons (which is what stopped me from signing up for the Dropzone one – hope you do another of those ) but I’ll give it a good try.
Also… Awesome show despite the power cut. As you said Warren, it was very old school. 🙂 Great to hear John is now full time. You need to give him something special to do again as I still love the twitch he gets whenever you say “Stompa.” Lol
Welcome aboard John 🙂
Fun fact, grain imports from the Ukraine were very important to Athens two and a half millennia ago.
That does not surprise me at all… That whole 45th parallel thing I believe
Good fact!
warren you should have had a slight droning noise going on in the background making it look like you were in your battle bunker?
Some air-raid sirens in the distant background might also help. 🙂
Congratulations John
You won’t see the great gaming tables at GenCon that you get on the UK wargaming show circuit. There were some great display tables set up in the trade hall by vendors to show off their games, but no club presence. Just on Lloyd’s impression of GenCon, the stall are collected in the trade hall, which is big and crammed with vendors, but the rest of con is much bigger and is filled with participation games. It isn’t like Salute with some gaming going on. It’s a huge gaming event with a trade hall in it.
Just on that, I don’t know how you’re intending to split the workload when you’re there, but if yous are planning on having some free time to game I highly recommend that you plan it in advance and book it when the events go live (I think it was in May last year). If you don’t book in advance there’s a good chance you won’t get to do what you want as most of it sells out. You can get “generic tickets” which can be traded in for a spot at the table during the show, but that means hanging around the game you want hoping someone won’t turn up.
Okay. Having watched the episode, to answer your question, my first foray into different scale is Robotech RPG Tactics. It is 6mm scale but of course, you are dealing with both giant mecha and giant races. So it tends to play quite like a 28mm to 32mm scale. Also, I want my Room Raiders army now! Really looking forward to this Kickstarter. I think it would be quite cool to actually leave the miniatures in the rooms their faction dominates. They’d just be on a bookshelf or in the bathroom medicine cabinet or perhaps on top of the refrigerator just hanging out, surveying their demesne. It would also remind your family of who really runs the house! Excellent show this week, gents, especially given the circumstances. Looking forward to next week already.
that room raiders sounds amazing, perfect game for parents and kids
Happy Weekend!!! Such a romantic start :p
Congrats John! And congrats to the Beasts of War crew for making such a great additon to the team.
lol 2 shout outs…:-)
my 6mm crusade goes on..mwahaha
I will have to bring over some pieces to the DZC bootcamp to convince @lloyd about terrain. .lol
So will we be seeing some games of Micro Armour? I think you guys would be more likely to see club play at Adepticon than GenCon.
Trying a different scale?…I guess one day I will have to try 28mm
Lloyd have a look round the internet for 2,3 and 6mm blogs there is some amazing stuff out there in both modelling and figures
Whee! Congratulations on the indentured servitude, John!
More tanks, weathering powder, unboxing videos and AT-ATs from the best dressed BoW team member 🙂
First Congratulations John!
Now GenCon from my one visit doesn’t have “clubs presence” because of the nature of it I would assume, the attendance is much more widespread and the costs of carrying big tables in contrast with Salute were most of the participants are local, that been said I have seen many great participation games from individuals, not that grandiose, but equally well build and loved by their creators, my particular highlight was a grandfather who set up a game for his grandchild which simulated ants fighting over for the dominance of a picnic, including the cloth, food basket plates and plastic food, the ants were some really cute anthropomorphic toys I remember seen them even in my country sold in bags as collectible, from memory he had two themes, WW2 and Napoleonics, it was such success he run it the entire show, that was a 1/1 scale game I guess, which leads me to the first game that tried a 1/1 scale wargame with fantasy creatures Fairy Meat was introduced in 2000, weird theme of carnival fairies killing each-other didn’t help getting it known, but the idea was at the time and still is revolutionary for a wargame.
Rom Raiders has such an awesome concept. I’ll definitely be checking that out – I’ve a nephew who might just be introduced to gaming through it…
Also, for anyone interested in 6mm, I cannot recommend Epic enough. It’s the game 40k wishes it could be. While GW may have abandoned it, many companies have stepped in to fill the void (Onslaught Minis and Dark Realm Minis spring to mind) and the community itself has pushed the game further than GW ever did. It’s well worth checking out.
Finally, here’s hoping that this comment is the one to get me some lovely WWX freebies! 😉 I’ve been commenting like mad this week trying to win some!
Im hoping for a Room Raider Boot-camp week where we can pick up the Kickstarter pledge at BoW, learn to play the game by the creator in every room of the studio!
If you do that, I’ll start saving up for the flight ticket (which is what has kept me from actually getting a ticket for Dropzone commander boot-camp). I agree with you Warren, Room raiders is going to be a great concept for playing with your kids. I’ll be aiming for that too.
Thanks for a good show guys!
Another great weekender thanks guys
Great cap to a great week! An episode just like being stuck out on the frontier of the old west. The Wild West even.
Watch out fer the Carpathian’s cronies!
…I’m totally not procrastinating from work to watch it…
Get DBA 3.0, its such a simple game and allows you to play at 6, 10, 15mm it is an awesome game that people don’t consider. it might look like very simple but it allows you to put any army against any army, Romans vs Normans to Alexander vs native Americans. such an under appreciated. you don’t need loads of stuff, a complete army will cost about £20-30. it is one of the best gateway to historical and other scales. I’ve been playing it since i was 11 and 10 years later im still hooked.
These arent mine but are from the 2mm yahoo group gallery showing some terrain
Looking at the pictures the buildings and walls look like there from the Irregular miniatures range

Morning chaps
Great to see John on board, have you guys got a tinterweb link or any other info on the room raiders?
Scale brings us back to the levels of wargames – that we seen in the past .
54mm for a real Mano a mano game? Or even knight models 75mm Batman?
I like both my 1:1200 and my 28-35 mm (normally just called 28mm)
Room Raiders – the perfect excuse for not cleaning up. I need it for my game; )
Not sure I can sell it to herself, but our 7 year old will be on board, with not clearing the mess;)
Congrats John!
On scaling, I’ve never scaled down, aside from Battlefleet Gothic, if that counts. I wouldn’t mind scaling up though. If a skirmish game came out with larger models, that might be fun. A bit like GW’s Inquisitor back in the day.
Room Raiders sounds amazing! I had the image of the models battling over the kitchen table after a finished game of Pictionary or Trivial Pursuit.
Involving my 5 year old daughters toys over the carpet might be fun. The Battle of My Little Pony Canyon, past the Forest of Kinder Surprise toys.
I thought this was the Valentine’s Day episode, brought to life by Doctor Dave WHO.
I played 1:300 modern (6mm) using minis from Skytrex, Scotia, Heroics & Ros and others, as well as the original GW Epics – Titan Legions, Space Marine and all the supplements. There were some insane battles of 10,000 or 15,000 points per side (sometimes more!), meaning entire space marine chapters, Imperial Guard regiments and substantial chunks of titan legions could be fielded. One game lasted an entire weekend…
6mm is as small as I would go as at least here is scope to put some paint on the guys so they have some visual distinctiveness.
The Warlord Tiger looks good – nice outflanking move by Doctor Dave btw.
Room raiders in my teenagers bedroom, loads of random terrain
I’ve decided to play Bolt Action in 15mm to get more on the table and due to the reduced cost thanks to the Plastic Soldier Company and the variety offered by Battlefront Miniatures.
As I mentioned on the forum posts, 6mm historicals don’t really do it for me, but I do like the sweeping landscapes you can create for them. In that respect I’m somewhat in agreement with @lloyd. Sci-fi is a different matter for the reasons mentioned on the show.
I love 6mm scale. My favourite game is still Epic Armageddon (40K at 6mm).
Myself and a few others are looking to do modern ‘Flames of War’ at 6mm… basically Flames rules for mid-80s, Cold War kit, on European battlefields (‘Red Storm Rising’ on the tabletop).
I love Vesper-On’s concept, what a great idea. Part of me would want to play that on a Flames or 6mm battlefield. The creatures are fighting it out on my club’s gaming tables when we’re closed! One them has thrown a dice at another one!
OOhh firstly loved the ambience this week 😉
Second could we sponsor some form of medication to reduce the excitement Warren brings, or at least display a warning of some kind, as I’ve just nipped over to Baccus games looking at the 6mm Napoleonics and I have spent another 80 squid… Argh guess thats kind of the point… just saying.
Enjoyed the show. As for playing at different scales, I’ve been playing American civil war games in 15mm for over 30 years. (Yep I’m a really old git) this scale lets us tackle some of the larger battles, and is of a scale that makes the gaming table look great. By the way, do you need more subscribers to pay the electric bill as well as John’s wages.
I knew I should have developed the 1:1 scale idea over 10-20 years ago when my nephew and then my children were little (ahead of my time as usual). Made up something similar, our inspirations being:
– borrowers
– Terry Pratchett’s Truckers/diggers
– Beatrix Potter
– Spiderwick Chronicles
– Brian Jacques’ Redwall
– Tom & Jerry cartoons & similar – especially in the kitchen
Trouble now is I suspect my terrain might be seen as a bit too… ‘Densely arranged’.
Congrats John, and another nice weekender
Well done, John.
Got my Warlord Tiger this morning in the post!! Going to get it built today I hope.
Pay your electricity bills guys!!!!!!!!
Well, it was either that or give John a job, so…
Spartan Games has options for playing their game worlds’ wars / conflicts at different scales. Dystopian Wars / Armored Clashes for big battles at 1/1200 scale, and 32mm infantry engagements with Dystopian Legions.
And if Steampunk isn’t your thing, you can currently play Firestorm Armada for Space Fleet Battles and Firestorm Planetfall for planetary invasions. And they’ll be doing Firestorm Special Ops to play squad level infantry actions in the future. They showed all three games (SpecOps was a prototype ruleset with up-scaled 10mm figures) side by side at Claymore last year.
This is where a few friends are I are currently dipping our feet. Building and painting FS:A and PF fleets to use in campaign games. The models are astonishingly good and the game systems are the kind of fun we’ve come to expect.
I for one love the 1:1200 I started doing a city and a harbour set – to make the old table look more alive
6mm is great. I loved Epic, in fact I think its probably the best game they made in the 40K universe overall, although Necromunda gives it a run for its money.
I still have an imperator titan, I’d love to see a new version of that created.
Once again guys a ‘fantabulouso’ weekender on so many levels.
Just as in the ‘war years’ you rose to the challenge of delivering a show in the face of extreme adversity, i.e. no ‘elecmatrickery’ done in the time honoured fashion, worthy of a scene in any ‘steam punk’ genre, BATTERIES!! yay!
Thoroughly enjoyed the topics covered and enthusiasm shown…….with one minor exception:
Is John not feeling well? as he looked decidedly ‘underwhelmed’ by the proceedings. Especially when you, Warren, presented him him with a copy of Angel Giraldez’s much sought after, limited edition book, the book that John, on a previous show was so salivating over and much lamenting that he had failed to purchase one, the bible on figure painting etc etc. If he is unwell, then I, like many others I would assume, wish him a speedy recovery! If he is well, then I must be getting old, as I did not see any evidence of thankfulness being portrayed by him, considering the impression he has given over how great this book is!
I’ve seen a very similar response from teenagers, when in receipt of presents at birthdays and Christmas, that they were not expecting and ‘didn’t really want anyway’! Meh! so what!
I hope I am wrong in my impression.
Body language John?
On the bright side, I am looking forward to XLBS show tomorrow, conditions prevailing! I’ll try and ‘beat’ DeadDave again to the ‘Happy Sunday’
Best Wishes to all BoW team and followers
Brian
Im always sort of awkward when presented with presents. I don’t ever seem to react right haha. Must be all the hours I stay at the hobby desk when I could be talking to actual people 😛
1:1 scale has been done – Fairy Meat. Not played it, but basically a garden based variety of Room Raiders, with the models representing ‘real’ fairies and other beasties.
Tend to use the smaller scales (10mm being a favourite) for more army based games, and even play them using 28mm ground scale – with 4 10/12mm figures to each 28mm, a unit of 20 looks really imposing (that’s 80 figures). And they are easy to paint.
You mean you weren’t demonstrating the night fighting rules for FOW in La Rochelle?
Thanks for persevering with the Weekender. The more cosy feel was definitely a change.
Room Raiders, i could just sense lloyds confusion at not building terrain and just using your house as is. Wonderful.
Oh and….bring Epic 40K!
Room Raiders
Kenzer & co. produced Fairy Meat many years ago, I think the PDFs are available on RPGNow/Drivethru

Fuzzy heroes let you use any toy as a gaming pieces, the cuddliest and plushiest scoring top points
http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/16718/fuzzy-heroes
I enjoyed the segment where you passionately talk about flames of war for the win. I was struck by Llyod’s comment on his mathematics being weak and just rolling and hoping for a good outcome. I subscribe to that mentality. I believe there are three types of Gamers. The C3PO’s who to the infinite decimal the chance of doing something. Then you have the Han Solo’s of the crowd who say, “Never tell me the odds” and throw caution to the wind. I enjoy doing that and am usually smacked down for it. However once in a while something awesome happens. The final camp is the middle ground of stats and throwing caution to the wind.
I’m more of the final category. A “Han C3LO” if you will…
Please include the Italian army in the bolt action boot camp! is the only one left out
gratz john great job
One thing I’m a massive fan of is scaling up to 28mm. Then again I do have access to a massive industrial shed and live in Australia where 300km is not to far to travel to get a pie
So with room raiders you can replicate the idea ofplaying an rpg within an rpg and have a wargame within a wargame. Have the room raiders hiding behind minatures that have been left out.
I know you mentioned Baccus in the show but Adler miniatures make some beautiful 6mm Nappys and SYW and ACW stuff as well
I should also mention that Baccus is releasing its new WW2 range this year, and as much as I do like Baccus I cant see it as being as good at GHQ’s stuff
Yay for John!!
Congratulations to John! Love the simple approach to the show. We have played Waterloo in 6-10mm. Talk about a sweeping scene on a table!
The WWX week is now over , so it’s time for me to choose my faction i never tought i would say that but reading at the Enlightend stats , they look so powerfull i can already all the synergies going between all the member in that faction and they just look so great !! First i tought the Outlaws were the one cause they shoot everything around but fighting those Enlightend we will see explosion everywere on the table and a lot of dying mini from those explosion so if i have to choose 2 armies to fight against eachother i will go for outlaws vrs Lawmen or Enlightend vrs Union, hummm difficult choice , but my favorite looking mini are the Outlaws so i can get Chief fightin for me………….. The game looks so fun that i can not pass on this one choice, choice, choice have to be made for me.
Ps thanks guy’s for this great week of WWX it is my favortie game play/battlereport ever (for now) 🙂
Great video guys. Can’t wait for the WWX KS to begin!!!
well done James! .. and this new game? what a brilliant idea! love it I will have hundreds of games with my daughter! I want interview or live handout with creators guys !
Got beat to the punch … 2 other people already said Fairy Meat for the 1 to 1 scale thing….
I’ve never really liked small scale… but only from a painting and detail perspective as I’ve tended to collect and paint more over the years then actually PLAY the games… I will admit the idea of thousands of troops rushing over the table toward each other is intense and awesome…
Congratulations to John! 🙂 I guess I’d better “watch it,” that he’s an official member of the team! 😀
Congrats John! I think this is a great move, John has done some awesome content for BoW and having a Historical gamer only makes the team more well rounded!
On to the 6mm waterloo. PLEASE do this! Ive been flirting with doing the American Civil War in 6mm. Something is so exciting about fighting over such a vast area (possibly miles?) rather then a few yards of ground!
Looking at this video, I have to put the question forward…is Dave an agent with the MI5?
Licenced to Kill? I am guessing its all top secret and stuff…but he does look like a spook!
He does have that Mycroft kind of look about him 😉
I do not have a membership to the Diogenes club
I own it mwhaha
HUUUGE fan of smaller scales (sometimes to the point where I’m not using miniatures at all … yes, I know, boo, hiss. 🙂 ). But what @warzan says at 43:35 is absolutely correct. On certain scales, especially the larger scales like 28mm, the actual geometry of the battle, its interrelationships in space and time, all become wrong.
Battles are like computer images. If you zoom in the scale too big, it starts to “pixelate,” and soon you have a representation that is completely unrealistic, implausible, and impossible to work with.
Great show, guys. Looking forward to the “rise of the smaller scale!” 🙂
Wow, John has joined the team!? Awesome! He is an awesome super duper guy who knows even more about WW2 and armour then I do (and I have been reading about ww2 since I was a nipper)
Room Raiders sounds great. What a cool idea. The other thing that struck me today was how brilliant that epic scale Sci-Fi game looked. Romans in space indeed.
Nice show chaps. It had that second world war blackout ambiance. 😎
P.S. Are we sure that Sam’s not one of the immortals? He was looking very “Interview with a you-know-what” in that light.
I’m well pleased John has gone full time….. good decision lads!
Once again a great weekender
I will play any war-game, at any scale at all. I have had great fun over the years with tiny Napoleonics, 6mm wwii (complete with churchill tanks that could only just keep up with the infantry!), arial wwi and we games, as well as 28mm boxer rebellion and teeny little ancients in their blobby lead chariots (some really old models got dusted off!). It’s just sad that I don’t get to play much at the moment since having to move away from where my gaming friends live. I’m going to try to get onto the next boot-camp pretty much just to get a game of something!
Ambiance theories for this weekender.
Theory 1 – @warzan doesn’t realize that Valentine’s Day has passed and was looking for an excuse for some quiet time with @lafayette. 🙂 Personally I think it is much more fun to play games with the lights on, to each their own obviously.
Theory 2 – @johnlyons has blown the budget on tanks already and that means that the light bill didn’t get paid.
Theory 3 – Is there some kind of Northern Irish amateur drinking night at the end of February? As we only loose power when some idiot runs his or her car into the power pole by not making the curve down the road it would make sense to me that it some crazy holiday is taking place.
Strangely the production quality of this Weekender is still right up there. The Beasts of War team (welcome back John!) has worked so hard to make this quality programming that even when things are working to wreck the hard work the team adapts and overcomes all the issues. This is a testament to hard work and dedication you have shown in expanding this project and the gamble you took when you moved home. WAY TO GO!
I love 6mm, I grew up with Epic. There aren’t any 6mm games that exist at current that draw me in. Mostly due to my annoyingly niche taste I might add.
I have considered making my own 6mm game though, but I wouldn’t be looking forward to handsculpting the infantry. Perhaps the Lovecraft mythos would be a good place to do it – 6mm battles of Shoggoths vs Elder Things, or Polyps vs Yithians. I wonder if anyone else would be interested in anything like that.
Room Raiders what a great concept and what an excuse, I haven’t tidied up the house as I’m in the middle of a campaign.
I am planning on spending quite a bit on the new WWX Kickstarter, but as a single parent I’m going to have to save some funds for Room Raiders. The concept sounds brilliant!
a very different show guys the very WW II feel to it, warren should have a Sigar & bulldog jurying the show giving the victory sign in the show, the borrowers game 1/1 game looks good a nice homage to Lenard nemoy at the beginning.
Beasts of War Unplugged… mostly. Great show as usual.
That was a very characterful show. Good choice of getting John on the team. The unboxings he and Justin do are very entertaining. I watch those even if I’m not particularly curious about the models.
Regarding scale I think the type of game you want to play is the deciding factor. Larger scales have more characterful individuals. For that reason I loved the Inquisitor RPG-strategy hybrid game, despite any shortcomings in the rules.
Smaller scales are more suited for epic battles and large sweeping movements. In that case the character is not with individual men but with commanding vehicles or the army as a whole. It has a different kind of appeal than what you get when looking at a single humanoid model. I love the Dystopian Wars range even though there is not a single humanoid model to be found. The spectacle of a fleet arrayed for battle is what sells that game.
Despite all my GW hate, I would love to see a new 30k epic scale. I have been trying out Spartan’s Planetfall for that itch. New models are not being released quick enough…
Congratulations John! 🙂
I loved the old Epic 6mm minis (I even converted a terminator squad into the Deathwing, complete with a teeny assault cannon!), I think it’s great to have games in different scales, especially in the same setting. You could start a battle on a small scale with full armies and then play out smaller scenarios with larger minis.
Room Raiders sounds excellent! It’s like playing with your toys when you were little, but with wargames rules. Kind of like that old Micro Maniacs game on the PS1. Such a brilliant idea! 🙂
There used to be a 1:1 scale game called Fairy Meat. Small fairies beating each other up and consuming each other. Some of the minis were cool. I don’t remember the name of the company that produced the game.
Again have to echo folks enthusiasm for Room Raiders, sounds fantastic, I have 3 little boys, and this would so much awesome.
Just got into 20mm or 1/72 scale hail Caesar definatly easy on the bank. Room raiders looks amazing I love the consept
Great show like always. Loving the sound of Room Raiders. would like to see more.
My congratulations to John, I was always a big fan of your approach to the hobby. \m/ By the way, my friend, who’s been listening to Sabaton a lot lately, sends his regards. 😉
The Room Raiders thing got me excited like nothing before it this year. I actually started playing miniatures using some horrible Citadel recasts (I didn’t know what a “recast” means back then) and knowing nothing about Warhammer. So my dwarves and orcs battled on the slopes of the armchair and in the great halls of the book-case… Some of the most vivid memories of the hobby come from a time I didn’t know it was actually a hobby. 🙂 If I can re-live at least a portion of this again… “Shut up and take my money!”(C)
As for the gaming on different scale, I was always put off by the fact that even the small-scale games rarely go fully “1 model = 1 soldier”. I took part in the By Fire & Sword Kickstarter, opened the box like a kid on Christmas morning and found that “one soldier represents 25-30 men”. What’s the point in going for smaller scale, if you still end up with “representations” of the actual numbers? The forces then are not in scale with the scenery (“We can fit those 3 guys between these buildings, but in fact they represent 90 guys, so what, do they still fit?”) etc.
My opinion, if you go for a smaller scale, at least try to approach reality, otherwise there’s no reason for doing it (except maybe having a smaller model and less details to paint).
Congratulations to John.
Surely this is how to present the Halloween episode – although I admit to watching the episode wishing for the power to come back on and watching you lot react to it on camera!
Started in 28mm, then went epic at 6mm and then battlefleet gothic, sod knows what scale that is!
Told my son about Room Raiders and he is full of excitement!! Thanks for the great show!
So what happens when the Room Raiders fight over the gaming room? Using a game layout with the minis all on a table being used as the ‘terrain’ for Room Raiders. I think this is an awesome idea and may be a gateway for a lot of new users, oops I mean hobbyists.
Or even a game of Room Raiders -during- another game! “My Skeleton unit moves up 4 inches and my Room Raider trolls squeeze in behind them for a cover bonus.”
Always nice to have you all as hobby company on a saturday 🙂
I would have loved to go to the Bolt action boot camp but I would have needed at least a week to apply for a vacation etc before buying the ticket, so I will miss it sadly. I would have been better for us international backstagers to announce it properly and then wait at least a week before opening the ticket sale.
That way we can apply for vacation time or manage to clear our schedules before buying the ticket. Been itching to go over there since you started talking about the boot camp events.
When I say itching I mean salivating nad obsessing. But not in a creepy stalker kinda way of course.
Sweden out 🙂
I used to love Epic, from gw. But now looking at wwx. Completely different scale 🙂
When I was first playing 40k, Epic was still a thing. I had no interest in it whatsoever. Now that I’m twice the age that I was when I started, I’d be very interested but I’d rather buy in to an existing system like DZC than try and eBay purchase a “dead system”.
Congrats to John, and to the WWX winner too! Envious over here… 🙂
Scale, Epic Space Marine the best thing GW ever did. I still have a very large(10K+) Squat and Ork Army 🙂 Dropzone Commander pretty good game as well. FoW has caused problems with the wife 🙂 It is safe to say that I have far more 15mm than 25/28mm not counting FoW. I have been collecting both 15 and 25 since the seventies.
Congrats to John!
Another great show, even without the lights.
Room Raiders sounds exciting but 1 to 1 scale isn’t new. Several people have already mentioned Fairy Meat but there is also ‘Zynvaded’ and ‘Don’t let the Zed-bugs Bite’ by We Have Issues Publishing.
I’ve been a huge fan of Zynvaded ever since I discovered the game several years ago at GenCon. Alien bug sized warriors that fight battles across your kitchen counters is great and I love the way they use real world items to sell scale… They often have bottle caps, dice, and other items modeled into the bases.
Ahhhh! That Vesperon game, I had that idea last year! I had even drawn little mice warriors with buttons (real buttons) for shields! and mushroom warriors and little mechanical battle machines made of watch parts! …….
If this game goes down well I will be super jelly….
I posted before I watched the end of the video! They even came up with the same campaign idea as me! Ahhhhhhh!
Room Raiders sounds like a brilliant idea- how has nobody else thought of this before?! 🙂
I’d like to fight a battle on and around a table where another game is already underway- Gremlins using Bolt Action Russian Infantry as cover and so on…
Late to the party but I really like that 6mm sci-fi game. I’ll follow that with interest …
Very nice episode. La Rochelle just looks amazing with that lighting. Room Raiders sounds interesting, but I think it will depend a lot of the faction style. If they bring that to life the way like the carnevale factions it will be great.
Lol @warzan had to go back 3-4 times before I understood that you said “Vorsprung durch Technik”. On scales: ever thought about not representing the unit in 1:1 amount of men? For example 8 guys on a single base could represent a company of 200 men or something. A game I’m just getting into “Fields of Glory” does this and is written scale independent. It is written in measuring units and they give you a table how long an MU is depending on your scale. E.g. on 10mm an MU is like 3/4 inch, on 15mm an MU is 1 inch and on 28mm an MU is like 1.5 inches. Interesting concept, which of course is not new, but I’m getting in contact with for the first time.
CONGRATS JOHN!!
Please wax lyrical on tanks as often you like 😉
John has a look on his face with a wonderful mix of “this is going to be awesome” and “omg what have I done”
Warren Room Raider reminds me of an old wargame called Fuzzy Heroes where you would use actual toys and stuffed animals to play. The terrain was the same just stuff you had around your house. The original is out of print but I just found out there is a second edition.

I think your kids would love it. I played in highschool and it was still fun but you can see it’s designed for kids as well.
I would agree that DBA is a good game to try. Especially if you like ancients, Lloyd. Another good system but more complex is Field of Glory. They also have a Napoleonics ruleset.

All of the ancients rules for Field of Glory have transferred over to the IPad. Look for Field of Glory App.
Congrats to John and keep up the good work guys.
Congrats on the job John! I’ve been following BOW since the days of Daryl and Andy and our John was always the master of the unbox. Bringing him onboard is good work. I’d like to see Daryl and Andy back as well. I don’t know why you ditched them, or care, but F–k it. They were good entertainment and I’d like to see them back. It’s just wargaming, in it together…. all together.
Roomraiders sounds likefun…there hasbeen a game like this beofre called “fairy meat” where you play bands of cannibal fairies.
Always thought John was part of the team. But glad he has joined the team for real now. Look forward to the content he has planned. Welcome aboard John.
What will the rules be for when my cat comes in and knocks over my Room Raiders HQ? Critical hit?
Perhaps just a knocked down mechanic and they have to spend an action to stand. Now if kitty grabs up a model and runs off, I fear it must give up the ghost.
great show!
The concept of playing in the real world was also done for mikro machines. That was not a tabletop game of course, but the idea is the same. However I will definetly get this. Finally an Argument to avoid tidying up LOL
In the discussion about scale GZG was mentioned.
GZG produce both 28 and 15mm for their game which is called Stargrunt II. It is an older style ruleset but has some very unique ideas with orders and communications. There is also a 15mm game called Gruntz which I haven’t tried but I am told is very good. GZG also produce a star ship battle game called Full Thrust which again is an older rules set but very good to play. All of the GZG rules are available free on their webpage 🙂
Stargrunt, Full Thrust and Dirtside are all excellent
Room Raiders sounds superb.
Shows that the best ideas are often the very simple ones.
Can’t wait to see what will come out of the project.
gratz john!
great episode even with the power cut good job guys! FOW FTW Season 3 / can’t wait! I built my whole force around the tips I got from FOW FTW!
O.O room raiders sounds absolutely amazing…reminds me also of The Nome Trilogy from terry pratchett! making a whole campaign around your own house fighting over different rooms and ‘resources’! brilliant! hope there is more information soon!
I just wanted to say thank you to Warren and the rest of lads for such a great week of content! I enjoyed all the WWX videos. And I’m immensely thankful for the fantastic prize you have awarded me.
I’m a father of 5, all of whom are the under the age of 5, so I have very little time for hobby. Its for this reason that I recently got hooked on this great website and hungrily consume all its content. I must live vicariously through everyone else’s great gaming experiences, for now. Thanks again and happy gaming to everyone! Another great weekender!
6mm all the way. I love it, lets me play a decent game at a scale I understand – always been baffled by the use of 28mm skirmish models in non skirmish games.
WW2, Cold War Commnder and Sci Fi are my sci fi staples.
On wild west – when they had their kickstarter I was somehow posted a giant box of stuff! Luckily for someone living in Brighton I had heard of them, game them a call and a courier came and re-delivered it 🙂
Congratulations John 🙂 better late than sorry.
I did enjoy the show especially the discussion about the scale. I am not fond of minis smaller then 15mm and larger than 35mm. I just like the amount of detail one can paint on the mini that suits me. Plus I share Lloyd’s concerns about the scenery for something as small as 6mm.
