well i might give those rules a try, but yeah more infinity stuff
Funny rules there! I’ll definitely try that out. Like the way you kept them fair and didn’t go for the overpowered road.
(Steel Phalanx for the win!) 😉
Excellent Stu, I like the idea that time is loaned rather than gained or lost. Looking forward to seeing the results of play testing.
For me, I like the longer, less frequent shows. In fact I’ve really enjoyed the changes since the move, I think the unboxings show now is a much better viewing experience than the individual ones from before (although I do miss having Darrell on screen).
I’d like to see turn 8 return, I thought it was a great show , I do like the weekender but I think the live interaction through twitter and whatever made turn 8 a much more compelling view, although I’m aware it must be magnitudes harder work to put out.
I think (and as someone who works on a PC all day and checks in at various times all day with my coffee) that with the work ben and sam have done updating the written news, there are enough new things daily without endless lesser quality videos, I like to be able to sit and watch for half an hour , like the xlbs, unboxings and whatever.
I didnt really take to the flames of war series, but thats just a game I’m not really interested in and not a criticism of the show itself, I’ve loved the dreadball ones that are a similar style for instance. I also hope the on the table series comes back, its a nice visual show with news I havent noticed or not paid enough attention to.
I would have to say overall I agree with Lloyd, quality first , let teh standard dictate how many shows, not the number os shows dictate the standard.
PS Feast of games was great , given the time it takes to produce (and wheatons behind the scenes of tabletop he did recently gives an idea I suspect)if you could manage one a month/bi monthly it would be worth it for me.
beast of war is really great the way it is so im happy
would like to see some 20mm ww2 stuff tho 🙂
lol can not please every one lol
time to write something about it then 😉 but in general I would like a little more historical stuff
Never heard of Inheritance, but it looks and sound pretty good. Taken a look at the rules and also the army list. If you play Warhammer, you will understand it. Are there more army list’s or is this it for now? Only been a backstager for a couple a days now, so I think there might be a chance I have missed them.
Same, I must of missed something. Info please!
Just noticed the locator beacon in the list 🙂
yay infinity, yay prizes
BoW should just keep doing its thing, I for one vote YES for quality over quantity. If that only means one or two videos a day than so be it.
Something I would like to see would be more battle reports, more stuff like testing out new starter boxes and starter sets, like the FoW FTW one, like running one Infinity starter box vs another with no changes and just going over the pros and cons of just playing out the box.
Also Justin, gotta say, I’m really digging the shirt.
+1 for battle reports. I imagine they’re a lot of work editing but they’re something Youtube does not do well. I’ve only seen one exception to this and that’s Wargaming for Fun (some aren’t bad but only WFF are *good*).
Dork lords gaming club only have three or four so far but are excellent. Real game, pretty much every roll shown and model move and removal. Edited and by far the best aspect is the narration by a guy called Mantis to an exceptional standard. I actually wonder if voice overs/ commentry are his day job. Medium length ( usually 2×20 mins) but don’t miss a thing.
Ooh cheers. I’ll have a look.
Speaking purely for myself, I’d prefer more smaller unboxing shows. Sometimes I come across What’s in the Box and have to leave it as the whole show will take me well past my bedtime.
I reckon having several What’s in the Box shows a week would be a bit easier to consume and mean folks don’t need to watch stuff for games they’re not interested in (if they wanted to ignore it – I’d still watch, say, 40k and Malifaux stuff even though I don’t play them).
Defiantly quality over quantity guys.
Late but relevant, yes quality of quantity. My favourite episode so far is the almost two hour FOW game. I thought the whole thing brilliant keeping in every dice roll, comment, etc. It was one of the best non-tutorial tutorials I have seen yet and I have watched tons.
G
not sure I like the temporal stuff, it kinda reminds me of the OLD bladestorm, with a tad more flexibility
I am SURE this question has been asked to DEATH, but will we get a battlebox and beyond for Hordes any time soon? Those shows have been great and I just picked up the Orboros starter.
Yes there will be Battle Box and Beyond for hordes in the future. We just need a little time to do some research and compile the lists and do the recordings – mike and myself do have “real life” jobs and things so please just give us a little time. Plus been gearing up for Convergence too 😉
How does a company define itself? Through its quality; always. Keep doing what you’re doing. Lets also remember there has been significant changes in the last 6 months, so any teething issues are understandable. Glad to hear that inheritance is firmly back on the map; I’ll look forward to testing this out
A great set of shows this weekend, thoroughly enjoyed them. Quality over quantity all day every day (or not as the case may be lol). The last thing I’d want with low quality content is more of it. With more written articles to support the videos the site will still have a lot of quantity anyway. The occasional audio-only release is something I still feel can add quality content to the site without taking a long time to edit. Speaking of editing, welcome aboard to Zak 🙂
I feel your Armoured Clash pain, Stuart. I can’t find anyone interested in playing it in my local area.
I agree with quality over quality rather than loads of short videos. I like the longer shows too and enjoy seeing the XLBS. Turn 8 would be great to see again, and seeing battle reports would be cool. Maybe some challenges, painting/modelling or battles (like the one between Warren and Brian “TemplarsCrusade01”).
Seeing some roleplaying and board games in action would be cool too. I want to see Warren’s Sharkorosaurus in action, lol!
I’d also like to see good old John again in the vids, but that might be tricky if he’s now working elsewhere. I did enjoy his historical knowledge during his unboxing vids. And Warren interrupting him with ‘Son ‘bitch!’; that cracked me up, lol. That really irritated him, poor sod. 😀
Maybe there could be something on model making – perhaps that would tie in with your looking for youtubers? I do model making on my channel (and have a load of videos recently recorded to edit on the tools I use). Perhaps it could be a case of having links or a “Hobby Tube Hub” or “Hobby Hub”, that points people to certain categories of youtube channels. So for painting tips you’d find AwesomePaintjob, Girl Painting, Ichiban Painting, OrkPainterNerd etc.
The only other thing I might suggest is a local hobby group finder – unless there’s already something on the site to that effect and I missed it lol! 😛
Overall, you do a great job of keeping us in the know about soooo many different games, I can’t fault what you do. It’s easy to just ask for this and that when you don’t have to do all the work that goes on behind the scenes that gets it done.
Look forward to the next Grumpy con! Hey, maybe there could be a Christmas GoW bash? It would be cool to see everyone again. Roll on next year if not! 🙂
Loving that Temporal Lock mechanic . Refreshingly different 🙂
And can i also second a request for Battlebox & Beyond for Hordes? And Circle in particular….
Right now I am happy with the output from you guys looking forward to hearing from Gavin about Relics as I really like the game and fingers crossed we will get more info about the other 4 factions (unless it is now 2)
Keep up the good work
I like the frequnecy and the qualitie of the shows
the rules sound like a good idea. might have to try them.
as for the show, loving anything you guys put out!
send me toys!!
Beasts of war is great, the quality over quantity is what I would go for. I also like the coverage over a-lot of different games systems. Keep up the good work.
Overall I like the current format, host have reached a nice chemistry, discussion is interesting even in topics that I am unfamiliar with and the topics engaging.
Ideally I would love to see it fixed so day X faction focus, day Z whatever the name you will give in learning to play from zero a game system (currently dreadball academy and FOFFTW) also one video per day wouldn’t be bad, but I agree with Loyd quality over quantity, personally I prefer the weekender (and xlbs) over turn 8, you may better think of introducing a single show at the last Sunday of the month with live interaction and sum up the month instead of moving to live chat show each Saturday.
I actually like the backstage as is “lazy and relaxed” it does not need more push content wise, better have the few inspired content like the designer studio or Romain advises than strive to find content.
Your article opening to outsiders is great, but it illustrates two issues, contacting you needs some more work and the frontpage/ contents are difficult to properly navigate especially if they are of some time, some more user friendliness and revisit on old tags might be needed.
Finally while I would really love to, I do not think I am even remotely eligible for any CB related prize.
Welcome back Warren. What do you have in mind for Justin’s bachelor party?
Love the idea of reaching out to the community for new contributors.
ohhh, reaching out to the community for new contributors for the bachelor party ? 😉 – OK, I’ll crawl back in my box
I prefer the quality over quantity and if it’s what you guys prefer to do as well then it’s got to reflect in the finished product.
Please keep bringing in presenters like Kev who are devotees to a particular game system. I’ve not played Warmachine so I get the feeling the videos will be a great resource for someone like me if they want to delve into the game.
@warzan Since 2011 but can’t talk about it yet ? That’s something to look forward too when you can.
Please keep with the quality videos over quantity, it was getting to a point where you couldn’t view them all.
Ps the corrigedor starter would be nice please. 😀
very nice ideas and very well thought through. Temporal Mechanics sounds very fluffy too, i can imagine it also fixes your issues to having a “techie” FTL drive that doesn’t come near the mystical Warp or Webway (much like the Tau Gravity Drives)
Cant wait to try a few playtests.
Agree quality over quantity
I love my Backstage sub just for the XLBS!
Quality first please! I approve of the things you’ve been doing since I joined (around Christmas). I haven’t seen anything on YouTube that has as good quality for the amount you produce and with such up-to-date timelines. But I trust you guys to do what you need to do. And don’t overwork Justin. Alright, maybe a little bit. Ok, a lot.
I loved Dreadball Academy, FOWFTW, and the only things I’m not as into are the really specific army breakdowns in games where I don’t know the rules (War Machine, and I’m ashamed to admit it, but 40k too).
The thing I like about the Quantum Loans is that you can actually picture it quite easily. Time is sped up to give them more action, but then it has to slow down to bring it back to ‘real’ time. I dig it, although on a board with lots of cover it may be overpowered.
Congrats to Justin! And Romain!
i have to say after last weeks BS please keep the quality videos
I prefer quality over quantity, I don’t have the time to watch too many videos.
Great to see XLBS back on form 🙂
Really like the Temporal loan mechanic. Would the invulnerable be additive to an exisiting invul. In any way. Eg Use only the best invuln? Existing 4+ invul becomes 2 + or roll 4+ then additional roll for 5+.
I prefer quality as well, I’m pretty happy with no more than 1 vid per day. If you guys start doing more it’ll get to the point where you’ll turn into a IGN for wargaming, full time staff and all that.
*cough* Aleph please *cough*
I too like the current format. As sad as it sounds, the Weekender (and XLBS!) gives me something substantial to look forward to on Saturdays that is wargaming or minis related, while stuff like the unboxing videos and Flames of War FTW! I can usually fit into a lunch break at work. The quality of those videos is high enough that I never feel disappointed with what I’ve just watched and that’s important to me because most weeks that’s the only thing wargaming-related that I will get to do, even when it isn’t related to something that I collect or play.
That said, when are we going to see a Star Wars Miniatures week! 😉
I think regular good quality is the key but hard to do consistently until you settle on your show lists. Perhaps settle on three known formats per week (medium term) and have one experimental show/wildcard (but regular) slot. Sprinkle with a bit of one-off opportune vids as people visit etc…..not far from where you are already. Last week or two has been great.
Perhaps you could have an army/force hobby section for backstagers. Where we can post an army list but add our own fluff in an intro section and units pictures etc. If all together in one section of the website and with a structured format it would be easy to browse through and something everyone could contribute to.
As a new backstager, I’m not disapointed by anything so far …
You guys doing an excellent job making all this great vids …
Keep on the quality track …
*Wishing someone doing that down there* 😉
BTW : Will you going to meet the guys of Raging Heroes at some point ?
Keep doing what you’re doing guys 🙂
Something that might be good is if you can kinda introduce and have a “get to know” series about all the presenters. I know one thing I have trouble with is keeping up with everyone, you know? 🙂
Agree with the consensus of quality over quantity. As Stu said there are enough other rings out there to get a hobby fix if you need one. Also always tons of old stuff to revisit. As someone who hips just getting into infinity loved this last week but have also been revisiting and enjoying the previous week also.
Appreciate yo have to mix it up and try new things and presenters but as commented elsewhere do miss Darryl for the comedy factor he brought.
Enjoy the weekender anderson XLBS is nice for us backstagers but have missed Turn 8. Also appreciate the gaming run throughs and how to’s are complicated but would love to see those revisited like the ones Warren did for Mercs. I really enjoyed those and would appreciate similar for other games such as KoW, infinity and the GW games (although I don’t really play the current versions I understand these would be popular with others).
I also think a show themed around something like the slow grow tournament or dare I say a tale of four gamers, showing how to get into a game and grow with actual tactics and gameplay tips would be good that actually teaches players and is something many people could refer back to in the future.
i think shows around scenario ideas and campaigns that have worked well for others (appreciate Inheritance is a grand version of this but perhaps not quite so in depth ad across different game systems) that provides ideas and cool thoughts and ideas for others to bring into their own games.
Lastly from me one of the things that attracted me back into the hobby were all the cool tables and terrain and there has never really been a terrain focussed show. Not sure of the format that would work but modelling, painting and even scratch building could be covered. I remember Lloyds great buildings he created for printing and that you guysmbuiltmone but we never got to see how it was done. Given you have also got a history of arranging giveaways of paper based terrain some hobby guidance on how to get the best out of it might be something to consider.
Just my two penneth.
Keep up the good work.
Pete
The mechanic for time borrowing sounds good and would like to give it a go but I quit 40k along time ago as I’m not fan of the company behind them anymore, any concrete images of the army that’s coming back from a galaxy far far away?
Also agree about the quality over quantity but some times just some times I wonder what am I really getting for my $6 in the backstage area….
Interesting game-play on Inheritance. In regards to the shows, I would definitely say that having a few good quality shows is better.
Infinity!!!!!!!!
Great week guys!
some interesting stuff, not completely sold yet.
Thank you for the great video! I recently started to play Infinity and I am having a blast with PanO. I actually wanted to begin a 2nd army with Nomads so that prize would be amazing cough cough 😉 Keep u pthe good work!
After reading the comments, most of them I agree on definitely quality over quantity.
Been watching the FOWFTW vids and just loving them just two guys having fun (and not like that lol) don’t think i’ll ever play it but enjoy the vids just like a lot of the BoW site might not do a lot of the stuff but still enjoy it.
So keep up the great work and cant wait to see whats coming up next.
I must admit quality over quantity is the way to go guys, doing so you will stand out from all the rest.
Your new show formats have been very interesting even though I may not be into the topics you are talking about but they engauge me to have a look at them.
I too am enjoying your FOWFTW shows as again it does seem that you all are having a lot of fun which again makes the viewer feel apart of the show.
As for new shows and formats, well I would like to see say a Saga serries being done like the FOWFTW, maybe just for backstagers ?
Seems the rule bit broken.
its nice to see inheritance back going to be very careful how you use that time rule.
better with less shows but higher quality as you get most daily news from the sidebar and vids for something on while painting as too many and you cant watch them all
Personally, I’d like to see smaller more focused unboxing videos. For a lot of things, 15mins would be enough to give us an idea of what you’ll get, as well as how it goes together.
Saying that, Quality is much more important to me than Quantity, as my time is limited to sit and watch videos.
http://www.beastsofwar.com/groups/painting/forum/topic/dayglow-pigments-for-glow-effects/
I’m certainly a fan of the less frequent, but longer and better quality shows. Some of my favourites are the hour long shows as it gives you time to really get into the nitty gritty of the topic.
The designer studio has also been one of my favourites.
As for the weekender vs turn8, I enjoyed both but my vote goes on the weekender just because its nice to wake up on a saturday and enjoy my breakfast with some hobby goodness.
Great show, both of them. Quality over content. I was a fan of turn 8 so Ill throw that in there.
i prefer quality over quantity with any great stuff in life BOW included. i love your rules idea for borrowing time stu. definatly going to play test them.
Love these videos. Quality over Quantity!!!
I like the longer shows with more detail. I also really enjoy the weekender. More 40K stuff please!
And other one I’d like to see back with be the table build that Lloyd and Warrens did
As a non-40K player I must say the I would not mind if inheritance where spun off from the weekend and got it’s own show – but not a big deal ignoring it during the weekender
I like the idea of introducing new presenters and new shows, but as stu said, it’s better to have fewer shows that are high quality, than lots of crappy shows that no one will watch.
The new shows like the unboxings, flames of war and dread ball academy are all great. Would love to see more shows like those. Maybe some infinity battle reports shows, or Malifaux etc. I know they are time consuming but as you do with flames of war and dreadball, bring in an expert and put a regular presenter with them to learn the game.
By trying lots of things out at once its difficult to understand what solves certain issues and what doesn’t. I’m an engineers by trade, and as a rule you change one setting/part at a time, look at the effect and evaluate the outcome. This way you get a better overall result in the long run. By trying multiple things at once you can cause confusion as to the effect of each individual component on the whole system/machine/whatever. (Not sure if all that makes sense?)
Anyway all in all, other than a few blips on the radar, BoW is still a great site and will be keeping my subscription for a long time to come! Keep up the good work guys.
P.s. the new Corregidor are awesome looking minis, tempting me to start a 3rd faction, after ariadna and haqq!
I agree with Quality over quantity, the call out for outsiders is interesting as well.
Really enjoyed the show, personally it was the hints and tips videos that got me started on this site, now i tune in for weekender at some point over the weekend whilst I get some time to do some hobby’ing.
I would prefer quality content. I do miss some of the more focused stuff but expanding the articles is a great way to do that. Something I would consider to do if I felt I did enough to actually write about haha.
I think the format of the shows is great and definitely prefer the quality over quantity idea. Being a mainly historical war gamer and also roleplayer I would like to see more coverage of these things although I do find the coverage you provide a refreshing change and it has also got me into a couple of new systems. (Infinity and Malifaux). Ive enjoyed the FOW series and have myself just got into FOW Vietnam. All in all keep up the good work guys. I think I may be in touch about writing some articles about other tabletop systems I enjoy playing and I also like the idea of the newshound, although my trawling of forums and news is mainly historical and roleplaying stuff.
Definitely quality over quantity any day but maybe a bit more of a set scedule so say monday FOWFTW, tuesday unboxings and so on. Loving the Weekender as it is expecaly XLBS so maybe a Turn 8 once a month. Keep up the good work guys and congrats to Justin on his engagment.
Always love the Weekender and especially since Warren’s back. Suggestions for shows? Personally I loved your little show with Geek and Sundry, that was a great recap of new releases. Anytime you guys actually play a game, THAT has my interest as well (ie. MERCS, Carnevale, dreadball). Keep up the quality of the shows.
I can understand people wanting more episodes. The weekender and especially weekender XLBS are aways something I look forward to (and am disappointed when they aren’t on). That said, I wouldn’t want it to be more regular, with less content or poorer quality.
The reason people want more, is because the quality is so good!
For me, I love to see programs explaining new systems and new games. I loved the mercs content you guys did, and I watch most of the GW weeks. I really really enjoyed FOWFTW, and it was inspiring to see warren take to it with so much enthusiasm.
I think it will help people get their fix, having people contributing article to beasts of war, assuming they are curated to make sure only articles of a certain standard get in (or are cleaned up). I haven’t yet got into infinity, but I’m going to go through all the infinity week content (and earlier infinity content) on BOW and catch up on how it works. I’ve heard good things!
I’d love to see more modelling projects, see people’s conversions and swaps. I’ve also seen a lot of stuff online about people being interested in compatability and buying bits that work with different ’28mm’ kits GW’s imperial guard. It would be really good to have a video of you guys looking at alternative models. I know it’s hard when you probably need to cultivate good relationships with GW. But it would be nice to see some cool kitbashes. What parts can I buy to make my Chaos marines/ Eldar/ Space marines/Imperial guard look super-awesome?
Keep up the quality over quantity (as has been said repeatedly 🙂 ). I really enjoy the Weekender in it’s current format (it’s settled into a good dynamic), but I get the need to test different waters.
I think as Community we are happy to accept that quality takes time and unless there was an influx of resources it isn’t likely to change. The older 40k bits prior to the move were great and the stuff since then has been great too. Too much editing and production though without costing more or sacrificing quality to give both and the quality are what set bow apart.
Quality is always better than quantity. Also Nomads are better than Aleph.
Quality of vids over quantity is the way to go.
I don’t play 40k but the Temporal Loan mechanics seem pretty fair. Good benefit but with a harsh cost should make its use very tactical.
And, yeah, i’ll have some Infinity stuff if you’re just giving it away 🙂
I am also a fan of the quality videos. I especially like the battle box and beyond ones at the minute and I can understand the effort that has been done into researching each faction. Other videos like Dreadball academy, FOW for the win and mercs rules intro are also great and I think there is a lot of potential there for other gaming systems. (X wing, malafaux etc, etc)
Turn 8 was also good fun to watch a while back and enjoyed the informal approach that program had. (Sitting around having a few drinks and having to take numerous toilet breakes :))
Playing the same formats continuously however can become bland. It means that video types will continuously need to change. I noticed this by looking at the comments that come out when a new format is in place. They become less frequent as that same format continues over the course of a few weeks. (I know this can vary depending on topics, prize giveaways etc)
My suggestion would to deliberately play a certain format for a certain amount of time and then change that format into something else which is essentially the same thing. Like the way that Warren was proposing to turn the week-ender into Turn 8 again. Both programs are about similar topics, gust different formats. When On The Table is on maybe these programs can take a back seat unless there is some other important news.
The same may apply to what’s in the box, and i can see and appreciate the way that the formats are constantly been changed and approved upon. In saying that BOW has been around a few years now and I have seen formats in shows that I liked and it might not be a bad idea to go back to some old formats or shows for a short time, if just for nostalgia.
I may not have got across exactly what I meant to but if you read this, I hope it helps a little.
(Also hope the behind the scenes technical issues get ironed out also)
Quality has been such a great draw to BoW that it should be the driving force over quantity. I personally love watching and listening to XLBS or Romain when working in the hobby.
Think I was a bit harsh and jumped my guns a bit, moaning about there not being a weekender last week. Your guys really do a good job, I would definitely rather see quality over quantity any day.
Out of interest, any final decisions regarding the form of space travel the inheritors are using?
I’d plump for quality over quantity. There are Game X “Weeks” etc where the game doesn’t interest me particularly, but that is just the nature of the beast (of war). The “Week’s” I have been interested in have been very high quality and in the case of Mercs Week got me into an entirely new game of awesomeness. Bringing in other presenters with detailed knowledge of less familiar systems is somethingI would also encourage.
On other content, I am not fussed about in the box, but I don’t really get the point of unboxing for anything – based on their popularity around the interweb though it just suggests I am a weirdo.
My favourite show by far are the Designer Studio ones. It was the one with Rick which provoked me into finally stumping up and forking out for a backstage pass, but they have all been excellent. So I am very glad to hear there are more of those in the pipeline.
I agree with you guys, a few longer high quality shows a week much better than rapid fire short vids. If you wanted shorter shows at a later date it would then be possible to cut sections out the longer shows to use, like channel4 does with River Cottage Bites, where they take individual recipes out of the full show to make little fillers for the schedule.
I would love Turn 8 back but not at the expense of the 2 weekenders.
Hi Guys & backstagers,
Love the temporal rules, they will get tried this week.
As for the channel, to emulate the Beeb or any other broadcaster
maybe look at the way they do it. Top Gear which is very popular within our
demographic, is an eight to twelve episode season that appears
twice a year. Once a week that millions tune to and follow faithfully,
there no complaints to the BBC, that it should be shown everyday,
even though Dave does just that!
The point is seasons of shows made up of episodes allows you to
try shows, maintain good ones and create breaks for shows to return.
I think thinking about planning a eight or ten episode show is easier
than shows that are open ended.
Either way TV production is person power and time deadline hell,
but great fun to do. I think you guys are nearly there with the formats,
I personally would like to see more games played, but stop asking
us what you should do, and do what you love, its worked so far.
Sg
Im a very new member, only a week old so its really hard for me to say much, but I did look back on the Seven Days of Sanguinius and some other older videos and I have found it all very helpful, subscribed almost instantly…lol
I think quality of quantity is a far better way to go, its easier on you guys and gives a much higher quality product from our side.
