Happy Sunday Backstagers!
It’s the XLBS.
I can’t wait to see what Warren has for us today.
Let’s get our hobby on Brothers and Sisters! We are the COG/LOL/Backstagers….
Happy Sunday!!!
Happy Sunday,
wow @warzan your hobby time was well spend.
Happy Sunday!
Gerry must have had a senior moment when referring to the Saga universe book for the Vikings etc. Yes there are a number of ‘Dark Ages’ armies in there but the sourcebook itself is “Age of Vikings” which comes with 12 different faction boards.
Now I know that he knows he really knew that…
I watched a documentary about a real troll hunter in Norway and apparently there are many different kinds of troll. There are two main types: The Forest Trolls and The Mountain Trolls. There are also many subspecies, like the Tosserlad, Ringlefinch, Dovregubben and Jotnar.
More here…

@warzan Amon Sul (Weathertop)

Ahahahahahaha your kids rule.
Here in Australia that word gets thrown around so easily and freely it genuinely took me a few seconds to understand why it was a problem.
There’s a saying “We call our mates Cults and Cults Mate” when I used to live in Uni accommodation with people from overseas it seems like we might be alone in doing this.
“Listen mate back off or there’s going to be a problem”
“Hey this cult come here mate have a beer”
The elves are looking really good. For the banner in 40K the Grey Knights have a Character called Crowe who carries a daemonblade that he just uses as a regular sword so he can keep an eye on it.
GW bases are 5mm those are 3mm. They were supposed to be 5mm like GW bases but I screwed up the measurement (hence why you should use calipers) so they turned out 3mm. Your basing looks incredible @warzan the grass looks perfect for High Elves, nice and bright.
Better get them on the table soon and make us a demo game so we can see how this SAGA Magic works 🙂
The Hobbit’s were attacked at Weathertop called Amon-Sul.
Chaos are an amazing looking army, no other army makes it’s Redshirts look so daunting as Chaos does.
GW clippers are hands down the best in the industry, very worth the Premium GW cost.
For the spider can I recommend the Red Back to give you just a bit more colour, nice and quick stripe on top of the other stuff youi’re thinking of just to break it up a tad.
Two giant wolves would be cool for a Ragnarok Theme. Skoll and Hati the two wolves would be cool, one chases the sun and the other the moon so they could have a cool colour scheme and fit in those 2 Man units @avernos was talking about.
@dignity if you run into any issues with the STL files send me a PM and I’ll see if I can help. Anytime you run into any 3D Model issues don’t hesitate to ask and if there’s ever anything you want designed for the bootcamp just ask.
Castle Itter @warzan was fought in a castle in late 45. The German’s have lost the war and are waiting to surrender to the US when some US soldiers arrive at Castle Itter. The SS then sends word for the Germans to execute all the prisoners and get ready to leave with them. The Germans and US Troops then team up against the SS in a battle for the castle until US reinforcements arrive and the SS are seen off.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_for_Castle_Itter
The Red-Back spider (Aussie Black Widow) is an example of two things:
1. An awesome yet easy paint scheme, particularly for a chain paint.
2. Straightforward Aussie naming conventions! 😉
Far out Elessar2590, you’re supposed to use photos of drop bears or Noah’s Arks when highlighting the dangers of the local wildlife. Anyone would think you’re trying to scare people into not visiting.
Backstagers, I apologise for my fellow citizen’s behaviour. This photo is not to scale. Redbacks are only ~thumbnail-sized.
@warzan fantasy Vikings add some Werewolfs
Happy Sunday!
If I met my clone, I’d talk trains because no-one else ever wants to talk to me about them!
@warzan That is a great idea of using the Bolt Action terrain on the elves, and the Hirts Arts on the Chaos. The basing and armies look very good. Sally 4th make a range of MDF inserts for Really Useful boxes. Perhaps worth having a look at their site for ideas. Tamiya do lovely dinosaurs kits but it is extra work for Lloyd or John!
Re: Norse mythology, Neil Gaiman has a good book on it, which I enjoyed reading…more than I enjoyed watching the American Gods TV show. Would provide plenty of inspiration for adding fantasy to your Vikings. Oathsworn have an amazing Odin on Sleipnir but I am not sure if it is still available as it was one of their first Kickstarters. I’d go for Giants, Trolls, perhaps even giant wolves with the Vikings.
Baking soda and superglue is great for gap filling as well. Just takes a bit of care at the end to make sure it is a smooth finish but it is quick and relatively cheap compared to greenstuff and other fancydan gap filling products..
One problem I can envision being with rescaling something that claims to be a 28mm building, 28mm isn’t really a scale, but that is a rant for another day.
Paint stripping – I’ve started using Dettol again due to the demise of Fairy Power Spray. It is impressive as it will also remove Polyurethane primers after a few days and my hands are disinfected after using it.
dettol is always the best
Also any fantasy Viking army without Valkyrie is like a German WW2 army without a Stug, just wrong on so many levels!
@warzan, I did this storage solution last year. It works a treat!
https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1228712/
Really good project!
Cheers @robert. I store all my minis like this now 🙂
Thanks Matt. Just asked where @warzan sources his sheets from…..then scrolled down and found this excellent project!
Nice work on the the bases Warren. Personally I don’t like walls and things on bases but you’ve done them well
No comment on the Superhero movie thing because I’m not interested
For Norse ideas just watch The Almighty Johnstons. It will give you all the ideas you need
Looking forward to seeing some 15mm medium sized SAGA as well
There is a forum thread at Tomahawk for Scifi SAGA

Just as an aside
While people have been mentioning Middle Earth I have been listening to the audio drama the BBC did years ago while at work
I had forgotten it was 17 years between Bilbo leaving the Shire and Frodo setting off to Mordor with the ring
The BBC radio play is amazing. Have it all on CD
It’s on the NI libraries app to download at the moment
Happy Sunday!
I also think the Spring Clean has been fabulous and it would be great to do every year. Like @warzan I spent 8 straight hours in the zone yesterday getting it done. So much so that ashamedly I forgot to take many WIP photos. Bits of ideas for this had been swilling around in my mind for some months/years and getting them all out and turning them into something was just so liberating. While I was working on the model my mind was working on his story, the overall theme and how I was going to present it as a finished piece. Now I can’t stop looking at it. The feeling of satisfaction that it is out of my head and in physical form is wonderful. It’s a weight off my mind, a project off my back burner, and a seed for a new hobby.
https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1381476/?order=asc
If I met my clone for 24 hours I’d spend it chatting though our memories. My memory is terrible so if the clone had the bits I’m missing I can fill in the gaps!!
Happy COG day,
Love the new design on the hat @warzan will they be available in the OTT store? Or can I reserve one for when I am over in July ?
Trolls ,giants and dragons/worms for Viking monsters.
@avernos you would even struggle to get some of the reaper dragons on a 10 x 10 cm base they can be huge!
On the subject of the spider base coat with the black then hit it with the colour shift paints and mark a pattern on top like you discussed to give a realistic look.
@warzan I think the dino with the spiked carapace is the Anklosaurus?
Also, stunned that a discussion of fantasy Norse doesn’t not mention the superb range from Mierce Miniatures for their Darklands range: https://mierce-miniatures.com/index.php?act=cat&cre=dkl-nor&sou=cat
if any of us could afford them it probably would have, we’d need to knock over the northern bank for that….and these days they watch out for it. Once bitten and all that 😉
They even changed the name of the bank to Dankse to try and confuse would be robbers!
clever clever bastards
Happy Sunday!
Great show, and what great progress from Warren on the spring challenge, mate you should be real proud of those armies, they look great!
Great accompaniment to some early morning Sunday hobby progress 🙂
Happy Sunday brilliant show, you have now made me sorry i gave away my high elves whf miniatures Warren, love the job you have done and the chaos basing also.
Masturbate! He said Masturbate! 😉
Is “cult” now a codeword? So the “Cult” of OnTableTop? oO Dudes?! I’m confused
😉
We all are cults at some point of our lives *g*
Happy Sunday! And Lance, all the best to you and your bride!
How about dinosaur tank riders? A unit of skinks on the back of a triceratops?
Excellent episode team! Loving all the hobby hints and tricks.
@warzan I’m intrigued by the magnetic sheet. Can you give some more details on what it is/where you got it from?
Man I get genuinely sad when the weekender XLBS ends these days
@warzan Viking monster ideas:
Fire giant from Muspelheim (Balrog would suit for this)
Ice giant from Jotunheim
Chained serpent, like a trained Jörmungandr
Yeti type creature?
Anyway happy Sunday fellow cultists!
Happy Sunday, another great show.
For Warren’s Vikings I’d add trolls, frost giants and some big honking wolves. The elves and chaos boys are looking great.
Justin’s castle walls just look really off in my opinion. Either the crenellations are too long or the walls are too short or both.
And to be a bit pedantic Vikings did not use broadswords. The broadsword is characterised by a swept or basket hilt. Just call them swords.
I’m with Gerry on putting trolls into Vikings to make them fantasy. For added horror you should use troll dolls. ?. Being serious though, you could possibly ask any Scandinavia Backstagers to check their local tourist souvenir shop for troll figurines which you could repurpose; would give your army’s trolls a unique look that’s different from the regular fantasy troll minis and would reenforce the theme visually.
It might be a bit vanilla, but you could add in a dragon; remember one of the most well known named dragons in real world mythology is Fafnir.
Speaking of mythology you could also add in a giant wolf a la Fenrir, and you could have your warlord mounted on an eight-legged horse.
Something else to consider – they’re not monsters/gribblies, but you could possibly include a unit or two of elves/dwarves. Don’t necessarily go for the standard fantasy depiction of elves and dwarves, but instead come up with something that’d fit how they were depicted in Norse mythology.
A completely off the wall suggestion – how about doing some sea games? That way you could have a Kraken; either as a single massive gribblie, or as a ‘unit’ of tentacles. Actually, thinking of about it, you might be able to get away with a kraken in landlocked games too – do GW still make a mini for the Watcher in the Water for LotR? ?
I’m with Gerry; those castle walls look a bit titchy for 15mm. They’d probably work better for 10mm.
For Norse mythology you really need some dwarves in the mix
Happy Sunday
@warzan I have use clay with the Green Stuff rollers quite a lot. I have show how I used it for my bases in my temple nest project, that can be found here https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1238037/
Thinking about the battlements scale issue. When you look at town walls they tend to be up on huge mounds or berms, so while the actual stone wall may only be 15feet tall, the fact that it is sitting on top of a 20-foot tall bank makes it tower over the townhouses within it. Making a 15mm scale bank out of polystyrene and flock will take minutes. Just thinking aloud…
Happy Sunday!
@warzan Good to see you getting stuck back into the hobby again. The revamped elves and chaos are looking great. Also, welcome to the cult of saga.
@dignity FoW buildings looking good. The smaller house could be used for World War Zero if its too small for FoW. The castle walls could be placed along the edge of one of the upholstery foam hills to give it a bit more height.
@avernos All the saga, all the time. Crusade stuff looking awsome!
Those prints are excellent!
@warzan the best system for a rainbow six style game is going to be spectre operations especially with the Version 2.0 of the rules.
@warzan – viking monskers – Grendal!
Happy Sunday all 🙂
Great show.
Basing makes such s difference.
They both look really cool. I would have gone for smaller bases.
But still great job. I wish I could have 8 hours of hobby time. 🙂
Hi Warren, for Vikings you could use the monsters from Blood Rage boardgame, as they would be great
Basing. That’s exactly the thing that separates the mediocre from the kick ass. I will keep at my own building of such things in future. Keep up the good work.

@warzan As far as having a Viking fantasy theme monster I’d toss in woolly rhinos as heavy cavalry
https://www.stevebarbermodels.com/28mm-prehistoric-settlement/51-28mmwoolyrhino.html
Or as dwarves were mentioned.. Dwarves riding War bears!!!
Awesome XLBS as always 🙂
@warzan Please take me up on my offer with the dwarven army, if no one else comes forth. I’ll enjoy painting the lil dudes for you guys 🙂 In fact, the one that should be worried, maybe even screaming ‘nooooo’ is @avernos He’ll be stuck with me and a lot of movies and Colombo episodes while going through this project :p
Great show!
If you do battle reports with the same armies in both Age of Magic and Warlords of Erehwon, you should add a third rules set. Compare them to Dragon Rampant, which is also a great fantasy rules set.
Best!
Loving those bases Warren!!! It’s great to see you hobbling again mate.
So, I am commenting as I watch/listen, I might make a few more posts after this one.
@warzan your 8 hours of hobby time actually does fit in with ADHD. Its called hyperfocus, you focus on one thing that you enjoy/want to do, maybe to the detriment of other things.
https://www.healthline.com/health/adhd/adhd-symptoms-hyperfocus#1
Over the last year I have had to reacquaint myself with ADHD. I thought you grew out of it. Turns out you dont, you just might react to it differently, or cope with it differently.
With mine, I have had a lot of self-doubt/Impostor Syndrome and frustration which has lead me to a lot of anger and short temper. So I was told to look into ADHD and think about getting on meds for it again.
If you havent looked at it yet…check out Jessica at How to ADHD https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-nPM1_kSZf91ZGkcgy_95Q
@warzan Those High Elves are VERY nice!! Love them. Makes me want to go pull out my Spire of Dawn High Elves and work on them. =)
Is the link to the podcast completely missing or is it just me?
Holy crap. Long weekend away = don’t see XLBS until Wednesday and I get quoted! Well you’re my favourite bunch of cults on the whole of the internet.
@warzan to theme out the vikings it’d be great to get something from the myths:
aside from giants
– a giant snake wrapped around a tree
– two giant eagle type miniatures and with a bit of green stuff creating Hugginn and Muninn Odin’s Ravens
– could also bring in some of the other god animals eg: odins giant wolf (fenrir)
– sleipnnir an eight legged giant horse
– giant goats/boars pulled thors chariot
although not scary, having any of these in giant form as if a gift from the gods i think would look cool
A great show an love the reworked army @warzan.
What you could add to a viking army: Trolls, frostgiants, you could even add dwarves, hel and her undead buddies, fenris wolf or other wolf dudes, tree people (could be like the children of yggdrasil or some theming like that)
Grrrrrr Lloyd’s poxy Vargians, evil gits – Die, Die , DIE!!!!!!!
