No, Mastodon is one part of a wider network called “the fediverse”. At first glance it’s “Twitter from when it was new and good and no algorithm was there”.  As @limburger said it is decentralised as are all parts of the fediverse. There are multiple systems that started as a mimic of things like Instagram (PixelFed), Facebook (friendica), Twitter/X (Mastodon) and even YouTube (PeerTube). But the great thing is: each server is independent. So no VC can come in and buy the service and make it shit. Yes a single instance can go down for what ever reason but you then just migrate to a different one. And you only need one account to access all. If you need an account in the first place. PixelFed and PeerTube are perfectly usable just as guests. But if you have an account, let’s say Mastodon, you can use that account to follow someone on PeerTube, on friendica or PixelFed.

That is made possible by the ActivityPub protocol. Everything that supports this can be seen and found inside the fediverse.

And now my favourite part: ActivityPub is available as a Plugin for WordPress so my blog is it’s on little server in the fediverse and people can follow, share and comment.

Come to think of if, since OTT is a WP blog it could also be connected to the fediverse. Though I’m not sure how much stress that would put on the poor hamsters XD
