Soldiers of Rome and To The Strongest, thoughts please

I never know how to title a thread. You’d think after twenty years online it would be a skill but nope!

Checking with our local club for once it eventually reopens (looking like probably late autumn) they play ancients largely with two systems. For 10mm they use Soldiers of Rome and for 28mm To The Strongest! My understanding of TTS! is that 10mm is perfectly possible with it but that’s what I’ve been told they do. My plan had been to work in 10mm but I thought I’d ask here and see what people’s experiences were with both systems. Is one markedly better than the other? Are they both terrible and I should start a revolution to bring in a Third Way?

I’m not familiar with either system. Do you know whether the basing for 10mm TTS is the same as Soldiers of Rome? If so, there’s possible flexibility in trying both rule systems.

Similar question for the 28mm – how does the club base the models? That might give some guidance as to what other rule sets might be compatible with people’s existing collections. Much easier to pitch something new if it works with what’s already there.

TTS works with any base and board size as it runs on a grid system. So it comes down to what you think is aesthetical pleasing, what space there is, what terrain there is etc… Within reason don’t have to share the same basing either.

I presume they do TTS in 28mm as they have a large gaming table and want the spectacle of large 28mm armies fighting each other with a manageable ruleset – that is what TTS is for so no issues there. TTS is easier, particularly for large battles.

I guess you are a bit dependent on what they use really. You could make a 10mm army and use it for TTS too just playing it against 28mm would be taking things a bit too far.

As it happens I am just deciding what to use for my future TTS armies. I am going the other way in these sense that the possibility of miniaturising the whole set up is what is attractive. For that I am not sure if I will go for 120×90, 90×60 or even 60×40 cm set ups.

So I have been playing around a little. Here is a 90X60cm mat which I am starting to mark out. And various base sizes. Left to right are 4, 5, 6 and 10 cm bases.

As I had the box here a few samples just to visualising the size difference. So from left to right are 10, 15 and 28mm. Each unit is occupying roughly the same area, 10x5cms.

From what I’ve seen people are using 60×30 bases for 6 and 10mm with 8cm or 10cm  grids

I have to admit it’s been so long, I can’t remember what the basing conventions are at the club. I was mainly there for Kings of War and Bolt Action. I’ll need to ask a few of the other folk. Thanks for that @captainventanus, it was really helpful.

Going smaller is my preference too and that means Soldiers of Rome to get regular games. What little I’ve seen of it, people like the ruleset though it seems less well regarded than its predecessor Soldiers of God (largely because SoR doesn’t have any terrain rules but the common consensus is that was an error).

I’ll probably pick up TTS for home games at 10mm anyway after watching a bat rep today of it.
