    ### Start of shameless copy and paste ###

First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/introduce-yourselves-new-member-thread/

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/

Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.

First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.

You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.

If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.

A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil. This includes no philosophy, no home computer culture wars.

Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.

Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)

And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is The Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv

If you fancy to see some nice WIP pictures go to the WAYPN thread https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/what-are-you-painting-now-2025-edition/

    ### End of shameless copy and paste ###

    Question of the week:

    • Who is your current hobby hero?

And now back to the show.

Pledge: try not to unalive anybody who calls from work and maybe get some hobby done?

Answer: Tom ( @tgu3 )  Mate you made my top list for this year. Just when we (the Backstagers and Otters) where about to jumpstart the forums again you swop in and make it all work again after mayor upgrades. To anybody unfamiliar with how websites work: Tom basically took an old VW Beetle and put in a brand new Porsche engine.

Pledge of the week is fix the party dysfunction so that the sunday night gaming is fun and not frustrating.

Not sure I ever had a hobby hero.

Pledge: Play some Midgard.  Finish the first elements for my Draugr.  Try not to melt – super hot in the UK atm.

Hobby Question:  Hobby heroes.  I’m old enough to have come through the production line of boys who found wargaming by reading books in the local library.  The Don – Donald Featherstone – has to be right up there for writing those books and for making sure the hobby had community and focus in the 1970s and 80s in the UK.  Bringing things up to date I think everyone in this community, especially those who post to the Project system are heroes.  All that inspiration.  Amazing 🙂

Pledge. Re-introduce myself to the community. I’ve been away for what feels like a very long time.
Lots of work- and family-related stuff going on last year, not least involving leaving lovely sunny Brighton (ok, Southwick) behind for a move further up north (to be nearer to said family). So had to buy a house, south of Birmingham, kit out the garage into a workshop, start a new bungalow at the bottom of the new garden for somewhere to hang out and paint….

It’s still ongoing (and probably will be well into next year).
But I’m determined to dig out my paints from the loft and hunt down some tiny 0805 LEDs and get back into “the hobby” again.

I already printed some Blood Bowl proxy teams but have been paralysed by indecision. In order to get my painting chops back up to speed, I can’t decide whether to try slapchop/contrast with highlights, or go proper old-school and layer, wash, highlight.  Then I returned to the forums last week and saw this… https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/paintcomp-july-2025/
and figured, that’d be a fun way of easing myself gently back into things – rather than worry about choosing the wrong approach and spoiling the teams I’ve got, I can try out the different techniques on some “fun characters” and see which works best.

    Hobby Hero?
Well, there’s that guy from The State of Play. I love the stuff he does. And the guy who sounds like telly chef Glyn Purnell’s twin brother from Crooked Staff Terrain. Always interesting and entertaining. And the waffle-y guy from Miniature Hobbyist, who showed us that slap-chop and done is actually good enough got me to enjoy just messing about with minis again.

But there’s only one who stands head and shoulders above the rest.
    And that’s our own @sundancer
What that guy does for our hobby, our community and this little corner of the internet in particular is nothing short of heroic.

It’s nice to be back. And great to see this community is still bumbling along, even after all this time.
And it’s only fair to give some recognition where it’s due!

Welcome back @blinky465  Good to see you able to get back to some hobby again.  And I’ll second your nomination of @sundancer  Anyone who can put up with us lot for this long and still keep turning up every week with his tightly scripted half hour on Twitch deserves all the hero worship we’ve got in us.

    Welcome back @blinky465

I hope the painting competition turns out some fun things 🙂

And thanks for the kind words to both of you.

Good to see you back @blinky465!

For heroes, my shoutout also goes to @tgu3 and @sundancer for breathing life back into the forums, tech and content wise.

    Hero worship ?

    Baah … I say. Baaaah!

(been listening to the ‘Planet of Adventure’ series by Jack Vance and that one worded response somehow stuck in my head now).

It’s going to be bloody hot again, isn’t it ?
The warm weather is not good for my hobby motivation that’s for sure.

Somehow the weekend’s over and done before I get any hobby started.
Not sure why, but that’s what it feels like.

At least the forums are back in action now.

It sucks how the folk that feed the hamsters that spin the wheels of society often aren’t rewarded enough, but that’s life unforunately.

Pledge: try to wrap up old projects before starting new ones. Famous last words, I know…

Music: I’ve had Ministry’s The Sqirrely Years Revisited on heavy rotation for the past several weeks. They re-did a bunch of their songs from back when they were a synth-pop outfit. Not quite as metal as their recent stuff, but I think that’s what I like about it.

Hobby Hero: Karl Perrotton from Crooked Dice. 7TV is what got me into “proper” miniatures gaming, and he’s consistently put out incredibly high-quality models and rules material. Plus I got to meet him at UKGE and he was kind, interesting, and very generous with his time.

This week’s pledge is to paint my competition entry. It’s built and undercoated. Just want a day when it’s a bit cooler for the painting.

    • Who is your current hobby hero? – I’d also have to echo the may other voices here that have nominated @sundancer For me, it’s the running of this thread most weeks and the unofficial hobby hang out. My hobby resolves around both.

I’ve completed another chapter of my Tainted Grail playthrough, for anybody interested: https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1909513/

    #1935959

Pledge: keep slogging through my new Eldar commission. It’s going well, actually.

Hobby Heroes: I would say the 90s era GW staff. Some of my best gaming times. Perry twins, Rick Priestley, John Stallard, Andy Chambers – those sorts.

    No music today.

    #1935988

Pledge: finish up the piece for this month’s challenge tonight and get an image online.

Hobby hero? I guess there is a list of people I look up to as far as their mini painting work, a couple hobby crushes but very few heroes. I second the nomination of @tgu3 for the upgrade. The performance is noticeably better and I doff my cap to him. I also doff my cap to @sundancer for being here to generally kick things around when it gets slow. I think that maybe @caesar should get a nod as well for the laughs and inside jokes we can share from time to time.

@blinky465 don’t feel bad. You’re not the only one off and on again around these parts

    Now, something with pathos

I have been given two weeks off work by the doctor, but it’s very painful. Achilles Tendinitus. Only hurts when I walk. Not ideal when your job involves being on your feet 8 hours a day and walking for 4 of those hours.
