    ### Start of shameless copy and paste ###

First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/introduce-yourselves-new-member-thread/

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/

Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.

First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.

You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.

If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.

A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil. This includes no philosophy, no home computer culture wars.

Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.

Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)

And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is The Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv

If you fancy to see some nice WIP pictures go to the WAYPN thread https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/what-are-you-painting-now-2025-edition/

    ### End of shameless copy and paste ###

    Question of the week:

    • Do you always know why a game or minis doesn’t tickle your fancy?

And now back to the show.

Pledge: Do more sorting. Got two more boxes for my SW:L stuff. (Not RUB but the same orange boxes. Just… for reasons! And a little board with wheels to move it around more easily. Also need to find inspiration for the PaintComp.

Answer: Most of times it’s either a setting I don’t care for (Moderns, WWI and WWII) or it’s a style I don’t like (example the overcomplex minis from GW). But sometimes I look at stuff be like “yeah, minis. technically nice done but I don’t fancy that” and I really can’t put my finger on. Latest thing where that happened was the Ascending Fate stuff from Freebooters. Since they teased it and shown minis way back when at Hamburg Tactica I was “yeah, looks nice…. but meh.” Really feels weird not having any real opinion on it.

    Music!

A dollie for your war dollies.  That’s a great idea.  I will remember that for when I move.

Pledge: Speedpaint pen Roman cohort 3 is getting finished now.  Then on to more Fae Wood Elves who I haven’t started a project for yet so perhaps I should sort that out tomorrow as well.

Answer: I’ve thought about this a lot and don’t know why the synapses either fire or not when it comes to a particular range or game.  I liked the look of Freebooter Ascending Fate but decided against, the same for the Signum fantasy stuff.  It has nothing to do with whether I need a new game of a particular type or genre.  I don’t need any new hobby with 50+ projects outstanding but I still want stuff every now and then.  I’m on an Oldhammer elves kick at the moment and don’t really know why I’m spending time and money on those either.
I’ll be interested to see if anyone else has better self-understanding.

    Pledge… do more hobby than…

Often I like the minis, but something about the setting doesn’t appeal.

I have that with infinity as the minis look good, but I just can’t be arsed with their fiddly metals.

Also don’t like orcs and goblins as the majority look like they were sculpted based on crappy gw art. Also elves that look like they belong in world of warcraft with their stupid pointy ears. And dwarves… and gnomes… and hobbits… don’t like stunties… or pretty much anything in the 40k universe…

Rant paused… I’m sure I can find more minis and games I don’t like if I try.

However… the reason for disliking something is not always obvious… perhaps we have tastebuds for gaming and sometimes the stuff is too sweet, sour, spicy, or bland.

‘no is an answer’ and ‘meh is an opinion too’

I think not having an opinion on things that you don’t need/want isn’t a bad thing.

It’s definitely better than actively disliking things .. with the possible exception of GW although that’s likely more their business practices and less about the games/art.

It’s also more positive if you focus on the things you do like. There’s only so much time and resources in your life that you can spend on things.

And in these cold & dark months before the impostor in red visits the world and tells us all to consume more thinking positive thoughts that don’t require you to ‘buy more’ is what is needed more.

    We also needs more music:

The XLBS mentioned using historical scenarios in a different era, but has anyone ever tried to move Starwars or Star Trek to a more ‘historical’ setting ?
(it’s not like Starwars has tried to move ‘historical’ battles to their universe despite it not making any sense to have bombers in space dropping bombs as if they were WW2 era planes … )

Currently not feeling the hobby energy. I kind of blame the depressing dark weather.
I did listen to a lot of music as a result of the ‘ai generated’ songs I found, so there’s that.

    ok … one more song:

Pledge: finish the crew of the trakk-trukk. Start the boyz mob it belongs to. Maybe do more terrain.
the week will be cut short for me as I’m going snow camping wed-fri. Nothing like living on the snow!

current forecast is for a cold couple of days …

This week’s pledge is to finish the painting competition entry, along with a batch of Heroe’s 3 models.

    • Do you always know why a game or minis doesn’t tickle your fancy? – I feel it’s best to look at this the other way round. I used to get into games because it was being played at my club. Since I stopped going to a club in Covid, now I only get interested in games that pull on my nostalgia, generally stuff linked to old video games I used to play. Everything else I don’t go for. I may like the look of something, but I generally don’t go for them because I know I don’t have the space.

Pledge: Get another Bloodbowl team done by the weekend

Question: The ones that I find least interesting are the overly complicated and the ones closest to reality. I enjoy fantasy primarily and the escapism for simulation is how I game. When minis come closer to reenactment it turns me off. I think my happy medium is historical with fantasy or pulpy science fiction that reads as familiar and/possible but didn’t occur.

In this week’s news I got the box set for the 2nd season of Blood Bowl done and I gave it to my FLGS gratis. I’m working on their Black Ork team for next weekend so they can put on demo games fir the 3rd season. I’m also working on my own regular ork team. Beyond painting I worked on a couple more army transport trays like I did for my Arabian Knights. I also did the movement trays for my SAGA teaching army before priming. I’ve built a separate Medieval army for the future and set the figures on bases. I’m dealing with unemployment as best I can and this has helped.

Speaking of SAGA I’ll probably be dragging some guys from the FLGS kicking and screaming into some games. Really its been wearing down the will of people and appealing to laziness. No need to paint more minis as they can just use what is done for games like LotR and WHFB without much worry about base sizes.

You mad lad! Here I am still pondering on what to paint with “water”. *sigh*

Also Sunday and motivation for hobby, once again, has left the building. Well at least the desk is cleaner and the boxes are actually moveable so I get get to stuff. Still need to come up with something to have easier access to tools and supplies. Currently all is tucked away an the stuff in the back is hard to reach. Oh well.

Grab a handful of minis… throw in a bowl of water… add a puddle of red paint and a shark… call it ‘Lunchtime!’

    water water everywhere

but not a drop to drink …

not sure why it is stuck in my head right now, but here we are

    #1952755

@sundancer I’m finally putting paint on a project I meant to do over a decade ago. The spring clean challenge comes early and reminds me of an army project I followed here from over twenty. Don’t feel bad about this.

@pagan8th That is a brilliant idea. I had tried to think of something related to the Reaper Bones Raft of the Damned but canned it thinking its one more mini I’d be buying just to fit the theme.

    OIP-312570053

@limburger I once heard about a gaming theme cruise after this recitation. I’m just afraid of the idea that people are stuck on a boat and then there’s gamer funk

    Water water everywhere

My nose is on the brink

    Water water everywhere

    Not bathing made us stink

On a serious note @sundancer, I’ve not taken part in the monthly challenge because I’m crap at painting and lately struggling to motivate (despite all the time I have since I chose early retirement).

The irony is I am supposed to be painting stuff for Carnevale and that means canals and some of the smelly water found in Venice is technically water (as opposed to sewage discharged in the canals).

Sometime next week these are due to arrive…Underwater

I just had to buy them… the divers are cool… the blue lady is unsettling… and that has to be the angriest mermaid I ever saw… not to mention the most disturbing with that half woman/half shark combo.

    @horati0nosebl0wer that is awesome… a shark disguised as a raft…

Also… my suggestion was not intended to be taken seriously…

However… there are plenty of movies to steal ideas from like Jaws, Piranha, The Meg, Jurassic World, Lake Placid, Sharknado…

    #1952767

Welp, winter camping was cancelled. As it turns out there was no fire pit or ability to have a fire at the spot I had picked (or any other).

Instead, I went all posh and got a room. I won’t get cold, I will have a stocked wood fireplace, and I … feel cheated.
