Hi Warren,
As regards the extra men in the 88’s pack, I believe 88’s can have an extra crew upgrade for something like 10 points per gun which increases their rate of fire, maybe that’s what those extra crew members are for. As for the rest of the gubbins it looks like just stowage etc for a bit more realism and modelling opportunities.
Hi Warren,
the things with wheels are the bogies used for transport of the 88 (two per gun). These were usually detached from the gun for firing. The two trucks (SdKfz. 7) are the towing vehicles for the guns.
like this:

What about called it W.E.BLOG Wednesdays Event Blog or something along those lines
I had the exact same problem with those plastic bases, they have laying down models with 5 or is it 4 with a standing… gerr. They are one product from Battlefront I do not like…
As for models per base… I don’t know if its going to be a problem, it wouldn’t effect most. As a tip have you got any more of those laying down MGers??? That what I did i ended up bodging them in between other guys to get it to the 5 man per base (I was like you worried about people)
I looked up the Sturm platoon on the website they have picked up MG teams… maybe we could get some of the guys standing behind with MGs… as a quick fix
Those trailers on the 88 as others are saying are just added bits, what you have done looks right on the money.
I really like the idea of this blog
thanks @lafayette I think tomorrow evening I may get you to sit down with me to help me build the rest of this army mate, as I might have bit off a bit more than I can chew! Lol
Not sure if this is definately right regards the stands but i was told that it usually machine gun and loader plus 2 guys on one stand and sergeant and 4 others on the other.
I think it be really nit picking though if someone moaned about a stand missing one mini though, just tell em he got shot or deserted or both.
Those trailer things will be the “bogies,” its just like a cannon/gun limber that you see between the horses and the gun’s themselves in all the old horse artillery units, they are used to carry ammo/charges usually.
Warrens Warlog 😀
Toilet humour intended.
+10 for awesome toilet humour lol
You know me too well 😉
The photo in the link below, probably best shows a 88 with its bogies for towing.
http://www.ww2incolor.com/german-artillery/01.html
Ohh thanks for this!
ah now i get it, and there was me thinking it was just something for bringing extra supplies for the command teams, you know essentially a mobile command post packed in to a trailer.
Humpday vlog, great name.
What about Hump Vlog of War?
On the Sturm platoon judging from the pictures on the Sturm Kompanie box:
http://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=872
They are based 4 and 5 figures per squad, so guessing from that the 4 figure base will have 1x MG gunner, 1x loader, 1x Panzerfaust, 1x rifleman, same with 5 figure base, but have an extra rifleman.
From the Sturm Kompanie box pictures not all the MG gunners/loaders are lying down so use the standing/kneeling ones to make the 5 figure bases, and the lying down MG gunner/loader for the 4 figure base.
If it says so on the box I am guess that is the way it must be?
As the guys have been saying about the 88 is correct, if you scroll down on this website, it shows a picture with the wheels attached:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8.8_cm_Flak_18/36/37/41
On the FoW site go to here:
http://www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=79&CategoryID=8091&PageIndex=6
Click on the GE550 8.8cm FlaK36 gun, when the new picture opens, scroll down on the right hand side until the bottom, and it shows how to assemble the wheels on the 88, but in your case you don’t need to.
Hope it helps
I have no idea how to help you. Maybe you should call this segment FoW WtF.
Flying saucer?
How about Wargamer Musings?
So if you are stuck or looking for ideas, this weekly video log will be out an outlet to for you to get input from the community. How about ‘Chock Log’. As in, a ‘chock’ is an aircraft wheel block…and for short you could call it the ‘CLog’. or not. 🙂
I Think it should be called BSLog, standing for what ever you want it to stand for but my Suggestion would be Back Stage Log 😉
Can’t help with your list but your shirt is remarkably sensible… is this a mid-week thing? Saving the T-shirts for Sunday Best?
Rather than using green stuff and then painting on sand etc I found it easiest to mix up a tub (air-tight tub so it lasts) of PVA (or was it PVAN?), polyfiller and sand. You then score the base, apply a thin coat (1-2mm) of the mixture and shove the models in in the arrangement you want. You then push the mixture around a little with a stick (or small screwdriver in my case) to ‘sculpt’ it and ensure you’ve hidden the model’s round bases. Sand, stones etc can be stuck on at this stage if you want, or added later when it’s dried as normal. You can even add a little paint tothe mixture to pre-colour it.
The PVA adds strength to the mixture (as does the sand, which doesn’t creat much texture) and helps glue the figures down. If you mix in a generous amount it sets rock hard.
I’ve also based my tank riders on small, clear plastic squares, cut from the blister packaging. This allows me to place them on the tanks without having to glue them on (and therefore be able to take them off).
I’ve never played anyone who cared how many models were on each base (the base size is more important in the game). I don’t look that closely at my opponent’s bases to care myself either but I’ve not been to a tournement yet.
Sorry, that post got rather long. I hope you have fun in the tournement. I’m sure we all want to hear all about it.
Oh, and how about ‘The Vlog of War’?
Just a heads up, you glued the front armour on the Koningstiger sideways. Go look at the box or online pictures warren and hopefully you can sort it out. Otherwise best of luck and glad to see you loving FoW!
AHH FFS!!!
Yup I can see this is going to be quite the learning curve for me lol
“For the Love of Vlog”?
This is really growing on me!
Entertaining as usual guys, I like the idea of a “less formal” discussion format not limiting yourselves has it’s advantages.
Regarding FoW and numbers of figures – I’d rather go with a “theme” than trying to make your army “codex” (if you will excuse the reference). As long as the stand is clearly what it’s supposed to be – mg/rifle, rifle, sub machine gun etc, the numbers of figures are not actually that critical. You will always find someone that likes to comment on your army (regardless of what period of history/rule set you choose) A reasonable gamer will understand.
I have numerous variations in armies, a worn para unit will never be at full strength and neither will a late war German force. My Italians are always well dressed however.
Please try and choose your next army based on what appeals to you, or one you might have a family or emotional connection with, or simply will look good! You will be surprised at how well they will fight for you!
How about Vlog the Informer!
Don’t get too stressed about the exact number of infantry per medium base. Four and five man teams work just the same in the game. If there isn’t room to stick the fifth dude in, just leave him out. Since there was a world war going on and all that jazz, there were plenty of times when units weren’t in their full strength.
What matters is the right base size and that you have the weapons right. So try to make sure that the MG teams have a gunner and a loader on them and teams with their panzerfaust upgrade get their combat lollipop specialist (very important).
It may be bit too late for this tip but for the painting the infantry, but let’s post it anyway. Rather than gluing your figures to their bases right away, get a bunch of tongue depressors or popsicle sticks then use blu-tack to attach your infantry models to the stick (team per stick). It makes the painting much easier and faster than painting them when attached on bases. When done, just remove the blu-tack and start basing them.
Thanks @drowningharvey
Can you expand on this abit for me mate? – “and teams with their panzerfaust upgrade get their combat lollipop specialist (very important).”
Combat lollipop specialist = the man carrying the panzerfaust. Since the upgraded base has superior antitank capabilities, it is very important for you and your opponent both to be able to track which base has the panzerfaust.
I don’t have this problem, yet as I’m building a tank kompany. but glad to know for futur projects.
As far as number of figs per stand. 4 or 5? the earlier comments have put it well. I would just add that many of the FoW gamers that i know try to make their purchases go farther and put 4 guys on a stand. Those extra guys then can find a home in another unit. The main thing is that you can tell what they are by looking at them. having a panzer faust fig added let’s your opponent know which stands have upgrades and such. Most of your opponents might not take kindly to confusion over what stand is what. So, having them clearly identifiable is the goal I think. I doubt anyone will care about the number of figs as long as there are 4 at the minimum. When you get to 3 or less figs that is usual stands with small bases, like leaders.
As far as the extra wheels for the 88s, i actually have a couple modeled this way. Someone might correct me but i think on occasions they could actually fire them this way though it wasnt ideal.
I also see that you wasted no time in going for one of the biggest baddest tanks in the game Warren. Enjoy. my pals hate seeing those king tigers. They whine about not being able to kill them. Have you checked out the Sturm Tiger yet? Rocket Propelled howitzers for the win. Might remind you a bit of a vindicator. A ww2 tank that could fire a shell the size of a small car and level a city block.
Looking forward to hearing more about your FoW journey.
They certainly were used with the road wheels in place, this video footage from you tube shows it well:
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1C7Hl28MHio&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D1C7Hl28MHio
Seems to me that what youre looking for is a club mentality towards the Vlogs. Nice.
Surely a backstage Blog should be called …
Backlog!
Also appropriate if it does end up being filmed on the throne.
Can’t help with FoW stuff, its too small a scale for my old eyes so never really got into it at all.
“BS Rambling Wednesdays”
Just read the tournament rules:
• All players must have fully painted and based miniatures
in order to participate in a tournament.*
*This includes basing and transfers where appropriate.
Me personally I would call Battle Front, just to clarify what is ok and what ain’t.
Only a week or so left before the big day, you need help painting Warren?
@y51c
In a nutshell, yes I think i really do need some help with painting!
Hoping to get some real progress made tonight (and hopefully dave will be in too to help me!)
If your up for helping me out, I’m not shy about begging lol
Very good idea for a regular show. It’s always interesting to see how other hobbyists handle their projects. I think it’s nice to see a series that is more about doing stuff with what we already have, instead of promoting the latest shinies.
As an alternative name you might consider Midweek Mini’s / Midweek Mini Vlog.
Both to describe the contents and the somewhat shorter video than the regular shows (if this one is any indication of future episodes).
I too used to struggle with building the platoons and still do when it comes to a new nation with dofferent loadouts and platoon compositions. There has been a load of spot on advice above, but i thought I’d chuck my 10c in the arena too.
I tend to take a systematic approach to building FoW platoons. Firstly I will lay out all the dudes and group them like-for-like according to the specific sculpts. Then I grab the appropriate bases for the platoon. Usually this is one small base for the platoon commander, and for Germans about 6 medium bases. Now a bit of terminology might help here – each platoon is made up of a commander and a number of squads (lets say 3 in this case). These squads are in turn made up of a number of teams (aka bases). In most instances is will be two teams per squad.
So first up is the small base, there will be amongst your mens a guy that is clearly an officer, usually waving a pistol and wearing a soft officer style cap. Pop him next to the small base. Then grab a NCO type guy. These are usually carrying sub machine guns and pointing off into the distance. Pop him with the officer and the base. Finally grab a cool looking rifleman (or panzerfaust if you have upgraded them) and stick the whole lot in a baggie to build latter.
Next the squads, go ahead and grab two medium bases. Then grab an NCO and pop him next to one base. Now depending on the type of teams, rifle, rifle MG or MG this will vary but let’s go with Warren’s MG teams for now – grab two MG dudes. Some of these are clearly lying down pouring on the fire. Others may be nonchalantly strolling with the weapon slung over a shoulder so have a good look at your sculpts to pick them out. Pop one MG next to each base, then grab two loaders and put one by each base too. Next you would usually add one rifleman to the NCO base and two to the other to give you your full squad of 9 men across both bases. But as we are going for panzerfaust teams you’ll need to amend this appropriately and sub in a lollipop-of-doom wielding soldier to either one or both of the bases.
Then pop them all into a baggie , Rinse, wash, repeat until you have all your squads bagged up and sorted out for building.
Apologies if this is over simplified and for being a wall of text but it is how I got my head around building platoons.
Hi Warren have a look at “The Terrain Guy” on You Tube he does some great stuff for FoW it may help.
How bout calling it the Shit we got 20 minutes of free time lets do something vlog or SWG2OFTLDSV for short…………………………. maybe not.
Good show guys.
I think you should call it Raw War, as it beasts of war in the raw.
Well, I suppose it could be called “the Adventures of Warzan” but you’d then have to decide who was Jane and who is Cheeta 🙂
The two important things with infantry basing are:
1) That they look good
2) That you can tell what is what
E.g. originally I based all my VC 4 guys to a base. Both the AK bases and the RPG bases. But in practice it was very hard to tell them apart so I ended up hacking one guy off the RPG bases — now if it’s just 3 guys I know it’s an RPG base.
P.S. I also ended up sticking all my infantry on Warbases bases because the Battlefront bases can be difficult to pick up without grabbing the actual figures — and that tends to break their ankles…
Good vid but all vids with Warren in are interesting. But it does seem to be showing that Flames of War model guides that come with the models are shit. If any guide actually comes with them.
When I hear VLOG I always want to say captains VLOG in a cheesy shatner accent and I always hate myself afterwards 🙂
warren they are how the germans transported the 88 guns behind the half track there should be 2 wheel parts one for each end of the the gun see airfix 🙂
as for basing had the same problem and found the best way is to seperate all figures by type of weapon before basing helps as for 4 and 5 man stands as you get more 4 than 5 bases i think its just a rough guide
