Doctor Strange, Justice League, Luke Cage & More, A Trailer Bonanza!
July 25, 2016 by brennon
Keeping within the geeky loop I decided I'd go hunt out some of my favourite trailers and features from this week since San Diego Comic Con opened the floodgates. So, let's see what is getting you guys and gals excited...
Marvel
Let's start with what Marvel have in store for us. One of the big trailers from the past week was for Doctor Strange where we got to see more of the narrative and plenty more magic.
We also had a little teaser for Iron Fist but also the excellent looking Luke Cage.
This is all linking into the Daredevil and Jessica Jones universe so that they can bring them together for The Defenders in 2017.
DC
DC haven't been sitting idle though as they have their eyes set on not only the new Wonder Woman movie but also the Justice League too.
I was pleasantly surprised by both of these trailers and think they could end up being a good watch. Well, I hope so anyway!
The Potter-Verse
Additionally one of the trailers that had be excited for Harry Potter's world of magic was the one for Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them.
It's nice to see more expansion for this universe on the screen.
Star Trek & Sherlock
Netflix are also working on their Star Trek: Discovery show; bringing back Star Trek to the small screen which is nice.
Sherlock is going to be back on the BBC too. With the twists and turns happening in this show anything could be around the corner.
It's been a bit of a mixed bag for Sherlock with it either being loved or hated by fans. Let's hope it all turns out for the best!
So, are there any trailers that have particularly caught your eye? If they have, drop them in the comments and lets get nattering.
Drop your thoughts below!

The LEGO Batman Movie was my favourite:

From DC side Wonder Woman trailer impressed me personally more than Justice League trailer. I liked what I saw and Gal Gadot has impressed me when I saw her in action as Wonder Woman.
From Marvel side all those were impressive. Of course since it’s big budget movie Doctor Strange was to me easily most impressive from those three. Then again so far Marvel has not failed me and I doubt they will this time either.
Doctor Strange looks better than I could ever have hoped for, It looks stunning.
Sherlock can do one for making me wait until 2017
Luke Cage has got me super excited though i feat the trailer is going to be the ‘corridor/stairway’ fight scene of the series. I loved the first one in DD but I found the second one to almost be included only because the first was so popular.
I know naff all about Danny Rand, outside of him being Luke Cages BFF, however the Netflix shows are 3 for 3 so far so I am excited.
Defenders has me excited, I just wish it was called Heroes for Hire =(
Well its been a while since i have been genuinely excited about DC movies, and both are ticking a lot of boxes for me, guess i will get over them ignoreing the CW series takes on things…
Dr Strange looks brilliant, and as for luke cage looks like i will be reneweing my netflix subscription, iron fist less sure on sure it will be good, but will have to do something special with its full trailer to out do luke cage…
As for sherlock well its getting into the realms of diminishing returns and cant see the cast being available/affordable for much longer, except for gatiss writing himself in at every opportunity (he really needs to face facts that he will never get as much screen time as he had in LoG, apart from his even more boring than paul merton’s bbc4 documentaries)
I’m highly disappointed at the Sherlock trailer… I don’t want action and explosions from that show.
The trailer for the Justice League film sounds like “DC” means “Depressed Clinically”, as the Flash (the most outgoing and fun character after Plastic Man) apparently is an ugly blobbing blundering gormless fellow who “needs friends”, and the colour green (as with all real colours) is still absent from their universe.
Wonder Woman sounds barely interesting (she’s supposedly a feminist character, why isn’t she wearing proper armor ?).
I’d say the Potterverse is getting entirely too many movies compared to other works of fiction of equivalent or better quality, but at least it looks decent.
I won’t even dignify the Discovery test footage with a comment, nor do I associate it with the words “Star Trek”.
Doctor Strange, on the other hand, looks excellent !
I was a little surprised to see so much JLA footage so quickly after the post-BvS shake-up. I was hoping there might be some ‘back to the drawing board’ first. With luck, this is footage shot by Snyder during the filming of BvS and there’s still time to make some changes.
The Wonder Woman trailer made the movie look bland and boring. I’m not understanding the love it’s been getting.
To satisfy me (and a lot of the fans) they’d have to redesign and reboot Superman, keeping Henry Cavill. I’d love them to do a detective-and-theatrics Batman (as the character was intended) instead of the dreary grunt in a gadget-filled riot armor… As for Wonder Woman, it’s great she finally gets some much needed love, but I don’t see exactly what sets the movie apart and justifies the reboot from the 1980’s.
Also, I simply can’t go and see a “Flash” movie with that hideous pale freak, especially vis-à-vis the stellar performance given in the TV show (in spite of the TV show’s many, many flaws).
That they put Geoff Johns in co-charge of the JLA franchise suggests to me that they think where they went wrong with BvS was in not capturing the essence of the characters. I wouldn’t disagree with that though that’s not the only issue with that movie.
Oh, and Luke Cage ? Too much of the MCU out there already. This just looks far too blunt. Doctor Strange is a special case, though, because he’s always be apart from other heroes, and he needed his own film… but Luke Cage ? He doesn’t really have that kind of mileage, I’m afraid.
Dr strange looks better than I though from first impressions.
Doctor Strange looks like a mind fudge, but in a good way. Im pleasantly surprised by it in fact.
Don’t know what to think of Ironfist yet by the add wasnt enough for me.
I cannot wait for Luke Cage after that one, that looks great!
Wonder Woman looks very solid but some of the sliding accross the ground fighting in the action sequences looks a little contrived, but I cant wait for it either.
Justice League looks good. A little light and up, but that is probably from the backlash Batman V Superman had from critics and audiences (and some people dont get it so strongly pulls from The Dark Knight series in the late 80s and some of the other subtext from the movie too). I wasnt too thrilled with the add, but on repeat watchings I like it more and more and it makes sense to me as I do some reading online here and there. Pleasantly surprised by Ezra Millers Flash (hopefully he might appear on the tv show as they do dimension hopping on that, or the tv characters appear in a movie, DC does have a heavy multiverse thing) and did anyone else see Rick and Morty appear in the background?
Fantastic Beasts looks like lots of fun too.
Discovery looks promising from what we can see. Judging by the design of the ship its set at the same time as the current relaunched movies.
Sherlock Ive lost interest in, didnt even click on it to watch
@nakchak They arent necessarily ignoring the CW series. Granted, it would have been nice to see Grant Gustin and Stephen Amell make it to the DCEU, but it doesent mean they wont appear. So many great DC stories involve multiverse crossovers, and I’d say there’s some plan for it down the line. It would be a lost opportunity otherwise. Fingers crossed anyway! They already crossed over with Supergirl who was on a different network in a different reality, as well as Earth 2 and Earth 3 (sort of)., and other realities are mentioned too. Also there was a rumour floating around a while back that at some point the Flash, Supergirl and Smallville (cancelled, different network) were going to crossover too, which is pretty exciting if it still on the cards. If something goes down well enough it could happen.
@elromanzo Aside from Loki and Hulk there isn’t a lot of Green in Marvel either. A lot of silver, blue and gold. Granted there’s more, but it might be a thematic thing until the Green Lantern Corps movie comes along. I kind of like the version of the Flash too, and it would be pointless if he was identical to the one from the series, and there needs to be contrast. I mean, Grant Gustins Flash is outgoing, has a few friends, and is a bit of a hipster. This version of Barry is more geeky, probably an introvert, most likely had a different upbringing and none of the supporting characters that the tv series one had.
With Wonder Woman its to fit her costume thats always been the way it has, more or less, in the comics. Batman never really as too much armour either due to working in the shadows and more agility when needed, and she does have a shield and fast reflexes. She’s never been as strong or tough as superman but moreso than a ‘mortal’ so probably couldnt fly in a suit of armour either.
As for the Potterverse it sells, the merchandise sells, and they probably need to do something with the license before it goes. Potter fans are probably dying for something new too, and this would appeal to a lot of movie goers, especially children.
Luke Cage doesent have much mileage. Maybe. But maybe, this kind of thing is needed. There aren’t a lot of African American or black heroes in live action stuff. I mean, we could list them but comparing them to all the other main characters, there is an imbalance. Plus, this format gives a chance for a fresh take or new spin on Luke Cage where he’s in the spotlight himself, and not with someone else or part of a team. We might get to see nuance and how he thinks.
@zorg I completely agree with you on that. The first ad had me worried.
PS: I love comics, I could go on and on at length discussing them and the media associated with them.
@elromanozo Sorry but the green thing strikes me as an odd thing to say for various reasons. Two movies so far… second one there was Kryptonite 😉 With the third movie coming soon and the adds, and just to continue green: Killer Crocs skin, the jokers hair, enchantress’s costume, some of the monster/demon things in the still shots of the adds, and all sorts of other colours you mention lacking are there in the footage with other costumes with blues, whites, purples, pinks and gold.
Anyway, I mean, red and gold were always the colours of wonderwoman, grey with doomsday, black with the militant bad kryptonians to a large degree with the previous movies, black and grey with virtually all the batmans (sometimes blue and grey), and blue and red with superman.
Green Lantern, man… Green Lantern.
The Green Lantern Corps movie will be out for 2020, apparently. I guess there’s only so many heroes they can put in a movie and do the script justice (hur hur hur). I’d says they want time for the memory of that Ryan Reynolds movie to completely fade away …
From Wikipedia:
A live-action reboot of Green Lantern titled Green Lantern Corps has been announced to be part of the DC Extended Universe, intended as the thirteenth installment, for a July 24, 2020 release date.[7] In July 2015, Tyrese Gibson said that he was in discussions with Warner Bros. to appear in the film. The movie will reportedly feature Hal Jordan and John Stewart as the main characters. It was also announced that Jordan may appear in Justice League sequel.[8][9] In April 2016, El Mayimbe reveals on Heroic Insider that the studio are eyeing George Miller to direct the reboot.[10]
I don’t think it’s healthy for the movie industry to plan this far ahead. It’s going to come and bite them in the ass, and they’re goingto have to re-do their schedule in less than five years because the market/public opinion will have changed.
@mage given how DC have stated that the TV universes have nothing to do with the film universes i wouldnt expect any appearence to be more than a cameo
As for green lantern i have no appetite to see it done live action, animated maybe but live action is just gonna look like green screen overload and frankly think it will come across a bit twee, unless they did the story line when hal goes ape and kills the lanterns, which would render a reboot moot….
@elromanozo No, but it probably saves them money some way, might give the fanbase something to compare to marvel with their phases, and probably looks good on paper on some report at Warner Brothers.
@nakchak You can say that, but take into account how popular the concept of the Suicide Squad was on Arrow and they killed of Amanda Waller and Deadshot once this movie was announced, they seem to be taking popular feedback on board (the praise about the Arrow and Flash crossovers leading to another spinoff, the praise of the Supergirl Flash crossover bringing Supergirl to the CW tv network, the negative reception of Batman V Superman changing the tone of Suicide Squad in humour and art direction with trailers they made more fun and energetic and reshoots). Suicide Squad was going to be a tv spin off but I think they realised the comic, characters and small tv appearances were so well received by the fans that a movie was a good idea, which it is. I wouldn’t rule anything out regardless of what they say.
Sure in the comics the amount of special events with crossovers of different versions or iterations of characters has been a constant with DC.
With Green Lantern, less CG is more for me.
Dr Strange was always my favorite hero. The previous attempts at making these stories into films always fell flat – but this one looks as though it could cut it. At first I wasn’t sure about Benedict Cumberbatch, but this second trailer has convinced me. Looking forward to the release.
Others I can love without, although the Wonder Woman trailer did perk my interest. Good time for comic book fans.
