Osprey Games Announce Dragon Rampant Second Edition
April 4, 2025 by brennon
Daniel Mersey and Osprey Games announced a Second Edition coming soon for his Fantasy wargame, Dragon Rampant. A new rulebook is on the way, featuring illustrations from Alan Lathwell and David Needham, with updates coming based on feedback from the Dragon Rampant community.
Dragon Rampant Second Edition // Osprey Games
The new rulebook for the Second Edition of the game will be coming out in October and will allow you to build whatever kind of Fantasy army you desire. You could build an army of heavily armoured paladins, a horde of rampaging demons or a tribe of barbarians thundering down from the mountains. All of this is tied into an easy-to-learn wargame which retains a lot of what made the first edition so well loved.
There are revised core rules with more rules included as part of the magic and monsters section of the book. You will also find sample army lists and varied scenarios so you have a good route into the game if you're new to it.
Daniel Mersey had this to say...
"I never thought I would create a second edition of Dragon Rampant but fan feedback from the hardback editions of Lion Rampant and Xenos Rampant, and many other hugely positive discussions, showed me that this greatly expanded format was indeed what gamers wanted.
This edition doesn’t contain a complete rewrite of the rules to change everything you liked in the original game. Instead it allows me to include all of the extra rules I didn’t have space for in the original blue book: an alignment of rules with Lion Rampant: Second Edition, a campaign system, new scenarios, plus all those other ideas that have evolved in the decade since the first edition was published.
Inside you'll also find many more fantasy-themed unit upgrades than contained in the first edition and a way more colourful spellcasting system. I hope you'll find Dragon Rampant: Second Edition a thoroughly enjoyable read and a portal into your own world of Old School fantasy wargaming."
This all sounds like an intriguing prospect for those eager to try out a different Fantasy wargame. Equally, if you're already playing Dragon Rampant, it doesn't seem like much is changing to transfer over into the new edition.
Are you going to be getting this?

I give Dan Mersey credit, when Osprey put out Lion Rampant 2nd Edition he wrote a forward that basically said: “You don’t need to buy this book because almost nothing has changed.” I guess he was able to scare up some more rules/armies for this 2E version of Dragon Rampant. (Both are great games.)
Good for him, these rules are popular, and I guess he is not trying to ka-Ching the editions. Takes integrity!
But also, dude: take the cheddar! 🧀💰
Oh yes! I have become a big fan of Daniel Merseys rules over the last few years. Back in the day (I’m talking Warmaster era here) I was a skeptic about the whole command roll mechanic, but as I have matured as a gamer, I find it to be a fun mechanic that I enjoy. The flexibility and the lack of complexity in the Rampant series though, have made me a complete fan. Can’t wait.
Wonder if he will finally realize that 99% of upgrades and over-costed, the biggest/only? complaint I see about his rule sets, and make alterations.
I’d argue that these rules weren’t meant for competitive play where ‘balance’ is achieved by both teams getting equal points in armies.
It’s much better to use rules like this as guidelines for scenarios.
