About the Project

As I am deep into Star Wars Legion and am now making little incidental items of terrain for it I might as well have a punt at making some input into this competition! I plan to make the Massassi Ruins, or at least part of it from Star Wars. Many of you will recognise this as the original Rebel Base from A New Hope. I feel that this fits in with the theme of the challenge in many ways. Firstly the Death Star approaching Yavin IV does indeed symbolise that the end is nigh for the Rebellion (or is it!) but the whole site has seen a number of apocalypses in its time, firstly the Massassi people and then the Sith (and then the crew of the Death Star, oops, sorry, SPOILERS!) more can be found out about the temple HERE

Flocking hell! It gets everywhere!

The work on the trees continues!

i took some steel wool and fluffed it up and roughly hung it on the branches

I covered the trunk with cling film and then took it outside to spray it brown

after that I sprayed on some hobby craft spray glue (3M spray mount) and then tried to cover it with some green flock. I say tried as it was mildly breezy outside and apparently that means that flock goes everywhere except where you want it… I mean seriously the leaves on the trees weren’t moving but the flock went everywhere!

Jungle is mostly done

I’m nearly out hot glue so thank god it’s done! That and I’m done with sniffing herbs in strength!

im really happy with how they came out, the artificial turf is the best part of it, people should totally copy that idea

im not sure whether I should wash down the really bright plants. I think it would probably improve it but I’m not sure I can be bothered. The only wash I have in quantity is the army painter dip but that dries hard and shiny so would then require matt’ing down afterwards and may crack off completely with use. Hmmm, let me know your thoughts.

Took some of the jungle terrain down to my FLGS where it will live eventually.

a couple of us clubbed together to have a 1200 point scrap in the jungle.

we all agreed that the bits i had made looked great and that once all the Yavin bits are done we will have a cracking game.

we also decided that we would need to have asymmetric conditions to make it fit with the Star Wars Story.

Now, as you may have noticed I recently bought a 3D printer because I couldn’t find decent models of star ships at the right scale (or at least that’s how I justified it to myself) os hopefully soon I’ll have a printed X-wing to paint up

A scattering of scatter

as we all know every board needs some scatter terrain to hide behind.

I’ve already made some larger bits like a shield generator and fuel tank but what about smaller bits?

well, my 3D printer has been built and I’ve been playing with it with (mostly) success.

now I mentioned mostly success. I have found a highly detailed X-Wing model and in my naivety tried to print the whole lot all in one go. It was going well until my wife looked at it and at that precise moment a part came away from the bed and the hot end started digging in. the safety features of the i3 Mk3 kicked in and stopped but sadly the print was ruined. one part was melted for a start 🙁

Ive since restarted it in bits. however it did highlight a problem I have with the auto bed levelling. There is a minor angle on the bed that means the first layer on one side isn’t compressed right down to the bed which can be seen in this image.

left of image isn't stuck down as well as the right.left of image isn't stuck down as well as the right.
in the meantime I restarted the X-Wing print and started painting up the scatter bits.in the meantime I restarted the X-Wing print and started painting up the scatter bits.

the first one is off the printer!the first one is off the printer!

so I found a brilliant X-Wing model on thingiverse which was 1:64 scale and brilliantly detailed.

I did a bit of back of the napkin maths to up the scale of the model by about 33% to try and get a 1:48 scale model of it and print it out.

im still new to this 3D printing lark so don’t really know what I’m doing but im happy with the overall results.

the laser cannons will need doing again at some point as they wobbled during making which means that instead of accurate laser cannons I have an X-Wing armed with laser shotguns, good for duck hunting but not so good for hunting TIE/LN fighters.

either way, the first bit of large area blocking terrain on the landing pad is in existence! happy days!!

Let's compile it all and see where we are at.

so without putting everything that’s painted together there’s no real way of knowing whether enough has been done. I still need to build a temple wall and the xwing etc but still, lets see!

the cannons can also work well on a snow board too!the cannons can also work well on a snow board too!

I went with Blue 3 as they were based at Yavin until their unfortunate demise at the battle of ScarifI went with Blue 3 as they were based at Yavin until their unfortunate demise at the battle of Scarif

I have been really working the 3D printer since I built it. I have had a few failures and have been trying to think how to cover it up and make a bit of terrain out of the cockups.

The bit I made is a grav sled that has been hit by some form of space mortar and spilled its load. The Gonk droid is there to try to clean it up, but sadly, he has no arms to sort it out so he’ll end up just going on his way and charge something else up.

even then I’ve still cocked it up. I put on grass tuffs before sealing with varnish. It turns out that when you varnish grass tuffs you end up with a semi pleasant early morning frost look. Happy accident!
