Oni of Souls and Clan of the Turtle.
Currently on my painting table are the Oni of Souls and the Clan of the Turtle. This oni is the last monster left for the core box so I’m looking forward to having it finished. This will be a nice completion achievement for me.
The clans will be an entirely different matter and will take a long time to complete. The sheer amount of details is incredible. It already took me an hour or two completing what you see here. Contrast paints are really helpful here. I tend to use them as shade/wash over a basecoat of the color I want. I then build up the midtones and highlights from there.
My old enemy yellow is also present. I find it difficult to achieve a smooth coat with this color. Even the Molotow inks that I just bought seem to be too translucent. Anyways, I’ll find a way.
So here is my little update for this project. I’ll keep you posted for the rest.
Oni of Blood.
I really like how I painted the red skin on this one. Really clean, and deep red like the concept art.
Oni of Hate.
The minis of Rising can sometime be a little bit overwhelming. There is so much details and different shades to master. This is a good example. I took me several hours to complete.
It was also one of the first time that I tried to do an OSL effect. I don’t like it at all on this mini. I think I ruined all my hard work. Still, it was too late in the process to come back. So it got varnished and will stay that way as a reminder of what not to do.
Yurei.
This one is really creepy. However, it was pretty straightforward to paint. Especially using Contrast Paints.
River Dragon.
This is a new one which never appeared here. It was a bit challenging to paint because a couple of parts are difficult to reach. So I took a seat and looked at the unpainted mini for a while before coming up with a plan of attack. I painted the metal ball its holding first and then the water. Once that was thoroughly dried I tackled the rest of the mini. This way any mistakes could be corrected with a damp brush without fear of removing my previous hard work. I also started using contrast paints on this mini. This is how I achieved the blending on the fins and mustaches.
I’m proud of how the water turned out. I really like this one and there’s 2 more dragons left to paint for this game. I’m looking forward to it.
Oni of Spite.
This is one of the first mini I painted. Nothing has changed. However, I have a new smartphone with a much better camera and I also can use it more effectively nowadays. So here are some better pictures of it.
