About the Project

Saga and Warlords of Erehwon have motivated me to break out some old minis from various ranges and build a few small fantasy armies. The first of these, is an army based on GW Fyreslayers. While I like the minis, the range is VERY limited with only a few units. I’m using the opportunity provided by these games to build a full Volcanic Dwarf army.

Had a very busy weekend with my wife outta town, so didn’t have much time for painting/modeling. Finally got around to mostly completing this test fig for a Shadows of brimstone magma mite. Really like how it came out. The body itself is just drybrushing, but the magma took a lot of buildup from orange-washed yellow through nearly white.

one of the non-Gaw models I am trying to incorporate in my army are these Shadows of Brimstone Magma mites/Fiends. They are interesting models, have potential for Levy in Saga, but i was annoyed that they just had 1 sculpt for all 12.

To try and address this, I pulled out my hobby saw, and decided to try and adjust the height of 7 of 12 of them. I did this by cutting the magma “drips, and either shortening them by removing sections, or lengthening them with paper clips. Any gaps to be smoothed over later with green stuff.

even though they are still one pose, the different heights will break up the unit somewhat, and make it look less “Same”

other ideas for adding variety are welcome.

First example of the mount for my Fyreslayer cavalry painted. Essentially robotic/clockwork shield-bearers. Painted in the gold and dark teal used for many fyreslayer decorations. as shown previously, the robot is a Targa Custodian from shadows of brimstone. The top shield is just various bits like dwarf shields and Bolt Action bases.

Now just 2-3 more to paint 😉

Below are the mostly complete Magma Golems. Painting these too a while, and I’m still not 100% on the results.

i painted the fiery cracks starting from a very dark red, then working up through reds, orange reds, oranges, yellow, and finally white. It’s essentially reverse highlighting, painting the first color broadly in the cracks and surrounding areas, then painting each successive color in a smaller areas within the crack.

I found after the first guy you need to paint the initial dark reds VERY wide to have enough physical room to paint all the “hotter” highlights.

color breakdown

1) dark red (Vallejo)

2) 50/50 dark red/flat red (Vallejo)

3) flat red

4) orange-red (vallejo)

5) fiery orange (old school GW)

6) yellow (Vallejo)

7) white (Vallejo)

The eyes were painted with a darkened jade green (50/50 with flat black) then painted as gemstones using old school GW Aeldari/High Elf gemstone methods of creating arc-shaped highlights towards the bottom of the gem. Dot of white at the top to show reflected light.

bases still need completing.

More shameless stealing from my pile of unpainted Shadows of Brimstone minis. These Magma Fiends I think will make some interesting Levy troops for my Volcanic Dwarves. There’s twelve of them, which lines up well with Levy units, but unfortunately there is only a single sculpt.

So worked the magma creatures this weekend. It’s hard to tell because of the color, but I sprayed them with textured spray paint prior to priming to give them a rough texture that was more like volcanic rock. The original plastic figs were very smooth. I used poster putty to cover the eyes and mouth so they didn’t get textured.

I also wanted to tie them in with the dwarves a little more, so used green stuff to add a few additional rocks to their skin that had runes inscribed into them. I’m not the greatest at GS, but I think it came out ok.

painting was:

1) basecoated black

2) Heavy drybrushed green grey (Vallejo)

3) drybrushed neutral grey (Vallejo)

4) light drybrush medium sea grey (Vallejo)

Any dark/medium/light grey would work, I just had these ones from my K47 Finns.

All four painted up like my first guy. Went for desert themed basing to contrast against the dark grey skin of the dwarves. Really like the results. All four painted up like my first guy. Went for desert themed basing to contrast against the dark grey skin of the dwarves. Really like the results.

Got a potential idea for some dwarf cavalry for this army. The start will be these “targa custodians” that have been sitting on my shelf from shadows of Brimstone.Got a potential idea for some dwarf cavalry for this army.
