About the Project

Dusted off my ASOIAF Kickstarter pledge after encouraging some friends to pick up the new Free Folk / Targaryen start sets. Using that as motivation to try and paint some of the mountain of plastic that was shipped. First time I've tackled something this big in terms of number of minis so using the project system to keep me going (hopefully). I'm going to attempt to paint to a decent tabletop starter, concentrating a bit more on the named characters.

This Project is Completed

After attempted contrast yellow (see previous post) I decided to paint the Mountains Men the same way as I did the Mountain himself.

Paint scheme uses the same techniques as the Lannister units, just with a touch of yellow instead of the red. The result ties them in nicely with the Mountain himself I think.

Poor quality pics below.

Minus The Mountain..

Details photos of some of the individual sculpts. (apologies for the poor lighting).

A quick and dirty paint job which seemed appropriate as this miniature represents a hostage.

I attempted a new approach on the cloak (below the shoulder / cowl). Rather than just use contrast black over the zenithal basecoat I gave the basecoat a thin coat of Incubi Darkness first. I think it worked out well, makes the cloak contours stand out a bit better.

The other thing I did was stipple/sponge on some Mournfang Brown on his lower trousers/cloak and knees to try and make him look like he’s been dragged through the mud.

Rest of the scheme was generally contrast browns for speed.

Tywin Lannister & Tyrion Lannister (halfman commander)

Couple of Commander minis done from the Lannister Hero box. You can tell they are commanders because they’ve found rocks to pose on & are pointing!

Same painting formula as before so I’ll not replay that again. Usual blurry pics taken on a phone below.

As the majority of this mini is just going to be the plate armour (which I simply apply Nuln Oil to be zenithal basecoat) I decided to try and document the other steps in pictures.

Firstly the final results for those that don’t want to see inbetween steps.

Flesh was done using my standard scheme – Bugman’s Glow  with raised areas picked out using Cadian Fleshtone before a wash of Reikland Fleshshade.

I added a beard briefly using Rhinox Hide but it looked terrible so I painted over it with Bugman’s Glow – surprising the result looks more like stubble so that was a result.

I wasn’t sure how to do the burnt skin but I ended up using Pink Horror then Reikland Fleshshade before highlighting with Emperor’s Children.

Hair …

Belt, gloves and chainmail.

Once all those were done it was a Nuln Oil wash over the chainmail and plate to darken it down as with all the other units so far.

I’ve been doing swords as follows.

Retributor Armour with Reikland Fleshshade on the hilt. Contrast Space Wolves Grey on the blade.

As the mini lacks colour I added a red gem to the hilt.

All that was left after that was the basing which you can see at the top of this post.

More of the same – rushed these and it shows – but glad they are done as that’s the last bulk unit the army.

This was an easy enough mini to paint – I made the most of the zenithal highlights and Contrast paint combo. That did the robe and once I’d done the skin it was just a case of picking out details.

The robe didn’t come out the colour I intended but the contrast did it’s job well enough – I would have preferred a browner look but that’s my fault through paint choice.

Paints used :

Skin – Bugman’s Glow // Cadian Fleshtone //  Reikland Fleshshade

Beard – Ulthuan Grey // Nuln Oil (carefully)

Robe – Contrast Aggaros Dunes

Gold trim – Retributor Armour // Reikland Fleshshade

Wine bottle – Waywatcher Green glaze

Cup – Leadbelcher // Nuln Oil

Sandals – Rhinox Hide

Rinse and repeat really.

For the Assault Veteran is using the same Vallejo Mecha Color Metallic Red (69.066) + Contrast Blood Angels Red mix that I used on the crossbow men previous for the red plate armour. This gives it a slight metallic sheen and distinguishes it from the cloth.

I think his cloak came out really well – just Contrast Red over zenithal but shows the cloak flow really nicely. It’s not quite so noticeable on the Guard Captain but its there as well.

As usual now I look at the photos I can see all my mistakes but thats greatly enlarged and at tabletop level/distance I think they’ll look good enough.

…and that’s it! All the Lannister’s from the core box and KS exclusives done.. phew.. I’ll summarize my thoughts in another post later this week…

Final Thoughts

Finally thoughts then.

Firstly I’ve got a new found respect for anyone that’s completed a large army! This was by no means large but there were times when I’d had enough and didn’t pick a brush up for weeks. The project system helped get me back into it, both the guilt of having no new entries and the feedback from fellow CoGs. Thanks to everyone that commented and voted.

I’m pleased I’ve finished, the collection looks great as an army. I’m glad I didn’t make the scheme too complex as if I had I might not have finished. Looking at the army as a whole you miss (forgive) some of the mistakes you see what looking at a more individual mini level. Its just gutting that I can’t actually get these on the table for a game due to lockdown.

I’ve painted all the Lannister’s I own from my Kickstarter pledge and the exclusives CMON threw in. If I ever get round to painting the Stark half of my collection I’ll do a new project. I’m calling this project done as a result…
