About the Project

Welcome~ Christmas 2018 I gifted myself the impressive Sally 4th 28mm Tramp Steamer. My goal was to build a small shipyard board to use with Pulp Alley solo games. The kit has removable decks with access to the interior. I didn't want to have to remove decks while playing a scenario. Inspired by Wes Andersons "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" I decided to keep one side of the ship open to improve interior playability. A couple of weeks later, the shipyard at my hobby room began to buzz with activity. Sadly 30 days later the kit sat unfinished. I hope to use this challenge as a means to complete this project.

The kit comes with 1mm card hatch doors. I glued them to 2mm foam core to give them some visual weight. I also added Dogs to most of the doors.

The Home Stretch III

Life boat and Monkey Island painted and glued in place. I also added a steam whistle too.  Just seagull poop remaining and the roof of the bridge is finished.

The crew has arrived! I ordered these 5 from Pulp Figures. I don’t remember where I got 1st mate Allen from. I’m looking forward to painting them.

Cheers for now!

After 18 months I can call this project and personal challenge complete. It has been a joy to go from concept to reality. And I can’t wait to get stuck in and play a few games on this old girl. I also want to thank Ben @brennon for showcasing this project on The Weekender, giving me no choice but to complete it. I still want to paint up the crew before I click the “Finished” button on this log.

I glued all floors together except for the Bridge roof. GW Seraphim Sepia was used to weather most of the white areas of the ship. The outer hull was done with various colors dabbed or rubbed on with a little piece of sponge. Bird poop was made by pressing paint onto an old toothbrush and then running my thumb a long the bristles.

Bridge and cabinBridge and cabin

I’m using the little space between the Bridge and stern cabin as storage. The Cabin can be used as a Captains quarters and as a radio room depending on the  scenario.

"The Lloyd shot"

What it was all about. Being able to keep the ship together while still playing on all levels. (Isn’t that what we all aspire to as gamers?)

" Humm, go through door A or door B?"
