Rohan Army build

About the Project
So I have had a large chunk of my Rohan Army built yet un painted for the last 5 years. 1. I had 1/2 painted my Royal Guard 3 years ago so that became my initial focus over he last two weeks. Failed to take a pic early on but will include where they are now as they only need basing. 2. Felt pretty good with getting the Royal Guard done so I jumped on my Erkenbrands Red Shields next. They are now all painted except for the wash which I’ll do after I mount them. 3. Erkenbrand is next. 4. Followed by 9 Rohan foot Militia.

Mounted Royal Guard Complete
So finished up with the woodland scenic blend and some static grass tufts from mini-natur that are very much tan to resemble the plains of Rohan. Then hit them with Army Painter matte spray.
Basing Update
So ive dropped a paver base rock or two on each of my cav bases. Will use a mix of 3 parts earth blend woodland scenics turf and 1 part woodland scenic green blend turf to do the 2d step. Third step will be some static grass.
Picked an old Bretonian unicorn decal that i cut the horn off of for my red shield banner bearer. I ardcoat any area that i put a decal on and use micro scale decal micro set nder and on top of any decal i use. Gives it great adhesion. I then put another ardcoat coat on top to seal it.
Erkenbrand and his Red Shields.
So the washes are all done and some extra highlights added to Erkenbrand. Next post will cover basing these and the mounted Royal Guard.
Red shield Washes
So my first step is washing the horses with Army painter quick shade that I’ve warmed up in hot water. Once this dries ill wash the rider with Agrax Earth Shade. I find the Army painter is good on the horses but even with it warm it covers too much detail on the riders so i use GW Agrax.
Red Shields Update
Dang i just spent 20 mins typing up a post on this and something crapped out and I lost it all. I hate and both love technology. Kinda like gollum and the One Ring!
So I’ve based red sqdn. I do try to pick rider poses that match the horses actions. Does not always work out but its good enough for me.
There is one green sqdn guy in here that I found unfinished so I brought him along to finish also.
As you can see there are holes in some of the bases. These are for plastic tufts of grass that come with the model that are crap at looking like grass. Static grass is much better will show you that later. These plastic tuffs do make great flames though for torches.
I use an easy and cheap technique to cover these. Bit of paper towel at its thinnest layer, some pva/school glue. Let it harden, perfect for basing. Cheaper than greenstuff and easy.
Ill be moving on to washing after i finish painting the rock under the bowman with the black horse. Had to add a bit of resin from the sprue of a FW model as a rock. Figure the horse is just clearing it in stride. Adding pics in a second.
Erkenbrand & Horse
So had to find a good horse for Erkenbrand out of my built and partially painted stash of 24 horses. Selected this one since his leg had broken and it would be easy to pin. Rohan cav horses are notorious for breaking due to their limited contact points and poses. Whenever im doing one with a metal rider i almost always pin a leg. So using my trusty old drill tool i did the hoof on the base first , inserted and glued the straight pin, then checked the angle and drilled the hole in the leg. I used gel superglue to help fill any aspect of the join that did not fit well and wiped off the excess. I’ll give it 12 hours to fully dry before i repaint it. You should not be able to see that line once i repaint it. We shall see.
Erkenbrand is now all painted and just needs a wash once i mount him on his horse.
Well crap, every time I post an update on him and look at his pic I realize I missed something. Need to paint his beard! Guess it’s good I’m doing this project blog. Another good reason to do this!
Added fixed horse image
Helms Deep Die
So my local gaming group is called The Veterans of Helms Deep. You guessed it we are primarily a Middle Earth SBG group. We have roughly a dozen members. Little while back i thought it would be nice to have our own die. So i designed this one and the group agreed and we ordered it from Chessex. The actual crossed Rohan and Uruk Hai swords was an image a guy on the FB page GBHL designed for me when i was having a hard time getting that to work. Would give him credit but i cant remember his name. Would like to send him a couple of these some day.
Anyways thought you might like a pic.
