The Halflings of New Hewenden (Continued)
The Halflings of New Hewenden
New Hewenden is a settlement on the border of Greater Hobbleshire and Scotstaine. The town sends many parties into the Mildaark forest to claim Arcanite. However the region isn’t always safe so the town has a large militia as well as a few employed town guards.
These are a few more of the brave folk keeping the town safe..
Golden Button? Ooh!!

Sheriff Gilbert Rumblefoot. He's been in charge of the militia for about 6 months. Still not sure of himself or his command
Rupert Crumbyshirt (Town Guard) Stands at the gates, day in, day out. Looks forward to his evenings in the tavern
Barry Smith. The town Blacksmith, always ready to use his smelting hammer in defence of his hometownMore to follow tomorrow. I need to edit the pictures into landscape format
Here be dragons!
So, the halflings are done. As is the explorer and journal. Last night I put brush to dragon for the first time. Did the belly on the big guy and got the first bit of green on the juveniles.
A break from painting this evening to aid in not burning out. So I will upload pictures of all the completed models so far
Buttercup
Apologies for no updates; I’ve been painting them still, just haven’t had time to upload bits to the PC. Having finished all of the halflings on foot, it was time to make progress on the Thing Flinger.
Gor Grunta fur and an agrax earthshade wash for the fur on the Bullox. Then drybrushed with a brown and finally bone colour. The warmachine was painted brown, given a nuln oil wash and then a bone drybrush. Then all of the details were picked out and the crew glued into place.
Having done that, it was time to finish Buttercup herself. The horns were painted bone then given multiple dark washes towards the points of the horns before a drybrush of bone and white towards the tips. Gives a nice effect. Then the padding was picked out in my army colours
I have deliberately kept the warmachine separate from Buttercup for ease of storage. When in use the 2 bits balance perfectly well and are structurally fine. Even so, when together she’s lovely
Just the trollhound to go at this point
Shiny, shiny, Shiny Boots of Leather
…well, gloves… and they aren’t shiny but still the point is the highlighting is done on the weapons, hair and armour. So, pretty much done bar basing.
Pretty much because I returned to the fire effect on the torches but I still don’t like it. I’ve got to the stage where whatever I do it looks wrong. I’ll revisit it once they are based and I’ve done the Thing Flinger.
Speaking of basing, I’ve textured the bases using the great Tamiya Dark Earth Soil Effect Diorama Paint. So very good. Dries rock solid. All it needs is an Agrax Earthshade wash and a bone drybrush.
And the last thing I did last night was give the Bullox from the Thing Flinger a coat of Gorgrunta Fur Contrast paint
#Relight my fire
Basecoats down, just need to highlight now.. and as the title suggests I need to redo the flaming torches. They’re awful! I’ve also taken a photo of the straw halfling and the Bullox so you can see what I mean about the expressions
You missed a spot!
Set myself up to paint last night and realised I’d managed to miss the bottom of all of the tabards. After a moment’s cursing I did these, highlighted them and the leather. Then I basecoated wooden bits. This evening the hair and the metallics will be done. Then they’ll start to look better. I always find that over a light undercoat, part done miniatures look poor. Strange quirk, but black undercoat always leads to a better looking mini throughout the painting process (in my humble opinion!)
The more I paint them, the more I’m enjoying the character in the faces. A great case in point is the Thing Flinger crew who is feeding hay to the Bullox (bottom picture with the wide eyes) I get the impression she really loves the animal she’s feeding, hence the doe eyes.. it makes more sense when the model is next to the Bullox. I’ll take another picture this evening
