About the Project
So, this project might not be as long as my other ones, as I think the characterful element is somewhat limited, but here goes.... As I have mentioned in my Primarchs project, my favourite Primarch and probably favourite character in the GrimDark universe is Konrad Curze. So it seemed only fair that after months and months of reading all of the materials - books / short stories - featuring Curze I get around to giving him a legion. Not that he would approve of that of course! So without further a do "Ave Dominus Nox" I give you my Night Lords.

Sevatar Work in Progress
Now, as you can see from the pose and the detailing, I think this has really just been a rescan and a resize of the FW model – sorry Games Workshop I didn’t know when I bought it! – however one area where it is totally different is the unhelmeted head.
Which is a bit cartoony. However, I like it. So I put in a lot of work on the face.
- Rakarth Flesh
- Reikland Flesh Shade
- Rakarth Flesh
- Berserker Bloodshade around the mouth
- Druchi Violet around the eyes
He also comes with his helmet, so I can magnetise these and swap them out depending upon my mood.
The rest of the model, basically follows same process as the Curze bust.
More Bust action
Well, with Big Konrad finally finished, the next logical thing to do is to paint the other Night Lord Bust I own….Sevatar.
Here you can see him freshly base coated.
I have also magnetised the head and the helmet so I can swap them out depending upon my mood.
Dup Post 2
Posted multiple times for some reason….
Big Konrad Finished
So, what with the duplicate posting of this, I also lost the text.
Anyway. Just for completeness here is how I painted the rest of Konrad.
The lightning Claws.
Wow, this was a major investment in time – I watched many a Youtube video on how to do a lovely shimmer effect.
- So, we base coated the claws with Stegadon Scale Green.
- I then glazed 3 3rds of his claws with Sotek Green.
- I then glazed it again, with shorter pass of Thunderhawk blue.
- Then we moved to a shorter glaze of Fenrisan Grey.
- Then we had a tiny glaze of Ulthuan Glaze
- Then we added an edge highlight of White Scar.
We then varnished the claws with a gloss varnish to add a shine to them.
Big Konrad more work
Right, getting into this now.
Undercoated the rest of him now – he has some huge shoulder pauldrons!
Anyway, dry brushed the Gehenna’s gold with Liberator gold, then ran some Agrax Earthshade around the rivets in the armour, then highlighted those with Storm host silver.
The armour with he lightened up in a few places with Caledor Sky and Teclis Blue.
I have then added a bit of white scar to the teclis blue just to try and give it a subtle spot highlight where the light would hit it.
The other side of his armour is still largely just Kantor blue, I may add a glaze of Caledor Sky to it to brighten it up slightly, but I want that side of him to remain in shadow.
That’s serving two purposes, its emphasising the light source coming from above him and to his right, and its also emphasising the darkness within Curze and the darkness of his legion.
Added the cape on him as well.
Just some Khorne red on the cape and some kislev flesh on the skin bits.
Then added him to his plinth, it looks a bit weird as having him directly sat on the plinth would have had him jutting off at a weird angle!
But I like it.
Looking great from a distance! Up close still a bit stratchy!
I think I am going to have to pin his armours and pauldrons on as his arm with the lightning claws is massive and double the weight with the pauldron.
Big Konrad
Right, so after my time away at the Full Beard Cup in Nottingham, I have now began work on painting the first of my Night Lord Busts.
So, this is the work in progress on Big Konrad.
I am using the standard formula that I used on my Konrad Curze Primarch model.
Undercoat of Chaos Black spray.
For the armour.
Kantor Blue. The trim is painted in Gehenna’s Gold (which rival’s Auric Armour Gold as the worst paint). Then I have blocked out the rib cage part and the various vents and exhausts of his power armour in leadbelcher.
The face.
Undercoat of Rakarth Flesh. Then I have ran magos purple mixed with with some contrast medium around his mouth, eyes, nose, and the various cuts and lines in his face.
I then highlighted the skin with Palid Wych Flesh.
The highlights were far to bright at this point, so I mixed up some Rakarth Flesh with some contrast medium and washed that all over his face.
From there we painted his eyes white. Ran some Nuln Oil gloss over them, then painted in his eyes pretty much just black. I wanted to leave a little bit of white around them, but that hasn’t worked.
I than ran some Drakehof Nightshade thinned down with water over the lower half of his face, and around the hair line.
For a final bit of colour, I ran some berserker blood shade around his lips, around his eyes, and on the tip of his nose – because for some reason the cover art of his Primarch book seems to have a bit of a red nose – which I just thought looked adorable!
Now, from a distance his face looks awesome, but up close the highlights are still to bright after all that correcting, so I am going to have to do something about that!
I think I am going to get some Rakarth Flesh and stipple it around the highlights to try and blend it in a bit more.
Plans
Right, I haven’t done anything Night Lordy for awhile, however plans continue in the background.
- I have bought some Atramentar specific paludrons for my Cataphractii terminators
- But even more wacky than that, I have been working with a fella on ETSY to 3D print some Night Lord busts!
I also have my eye on some black wooden Plinths for these 2 to sit on.
I am looking forward to painting a huge great Konrad Curze face!
UPDATE
I am informed that Sev and Konrad are in the post….
UPDATE
Both have now arrived. I had to do a bit of work straightening Curze’s lightning claws, but apart from that both look awesome.
I have also ordered a pair of plinths from Green Stuff World. Once they arrive we can get these two undercoated and begin work!
Also (not related to these busts) but I saw Valrak on the Youtube rumouring away about Night Lord upgrade kits coming soon…my word between the Horus Heresey Miniatures I still need to build from the Age of Darkness box set, MKIII armours I want to buy and one can only assume a new MKIV armour at some point, I maybe painting Midnight Blue for years to come!
