About the Project
Work mate gave me these Dwarf Miners to paint months ago, but got engaged in other projects and forgot about them. There was no deadline on when to paint and return them, but I have decided its as good a time as any to make them a priority.

Test model
I wasn’t given any instructions on preference other than “colourful”.
I am going to make a base for them to be displayed on because my workmate doesn’t intend to play with them, but they will keep their individual bases as well.
The minis were primed black and based on slotter bases already.
To see the detail etc. I drybrushed the whole mini with Grey Seer. Then I used…
Flesh Tearer Red Contrast Paint with a heavy highlight of Mephistom Red.
Snakebite Leather on the gloves.
Ork Flesh Contrast Paint. Sleaves.
Jokaero Orange and Citadel yellow wash for the hair.
Bugman’s Glow with a wash of Reikland Fleshshade and a highlight of Army Painter Barbarian Flesh and Bugman’s Glow mix.
Leadbelcher and a high slive for the metal parts.
I used some of the yellow wash to suggest candle light being cast on to the pick.
The candle is Zandri Dust, then Morghast Off-white and Wraithbone on the high points.
The flame looked ok, but I think I improved it with my next model.
The basing is a mixture of flint, brown earth flock and winter grass.
Music maestro please...
Seeing as I have done a ton of plaid recently, why not do a touch more on a more standout mini in the party.
I have decided all, or at least most, will have their own sleave colours but the core colours from the test mini will remain the same.
The instrument is painted with a mixture of Retributor Gold and Army Painter Weapon Bronze and a Reikland Fleshshade wash and some yellow wash where it is adjacent to the candle.
On a roll.
The beard was a mix of Zandri Dust, Jokaero Orange and Yellow, with a yellow wash.
The arms are a Contrast blue.
For variety I changed the gloves to a Mournfang Brown.
Not bad... Three minis on a Thursday.
Trying out different beard colours. This time i went heavy on the Grey Seer drybrush and used Black Templar for the beard.
The candles came out well. Choosing to build the colours with a yellow up to Wraithbone white in the middle and knocking the white back with a yellow wash.
This was my third mini in one day and called it a night. ?
The minor miner
The last few minis look fun to paint.
I got it wrong about the project size. There were only 8 not 10 dwarves. This was the least difficult one, i felt under the weather so went with this guy first.
The blond beard and black gloves set him apart. After the photos I decided the OSL (which basically just a couple of silver highlights hit with Casandora Yellow wash) was too harsh, so carefully knocked back the severity with some watered down Leadbelcher.
CD base
Wanted to make something where his painted models could be set together on a shelf or someplace. CDs are my preferred basing because they don’t bend and their a nice size.
I got it wrong about the project size. There were only 8 minis not 10. This made things easier.
I have planned out where the minis will stand roughly and made doors and steps from offcuts of mdf from some kit sprues I kept. I will use some PVA and plaster to give me some texture and disguise the component parts into looking like the ruins I have in my minds eye. Some flint pieces and the earth flock and winter grass I have already used on their bases and it should start to gel as a nice place to keep the minis.
Standard...
The standard bearer with grey beard and Nighthaunt Gloom sleaves looks good. The OSL might be too stark again. Not sure. Only two more minis to go. ?
The display base is almost finished. I followed through on my plan to cover everything in a plaster, splodge of black paint and PVA mix to give texture, secure the pieces more and seal the mdf. I drybrushed it with grey seer. Then it all looked too uniform so I painted the standing door way with Camoshade wash and various nooks and crannies with Agrax Earthshade and Nulin Oil washes to give some variety. Then i added my earth flock, flint chippings and winter grass flock.
I added some extra stones, trying not to be too blatant and uniform, to help keep the minis in place if being picked up to look at. Won’t take a lot of pushing about, but at least I hope it will mean you don’t have walk around it tentatively all the time for fear of something falling off or over all the time.
The last two minis.
I felt I was rushing these a little so slowed up and added a plaid to some shirt sleaves and did the best I could.
