About the Project

I have some very good friends who chipped in to pick up the newest core box for Marvel Crisis Protocol for my birthday present. One of the benefits of celebrating in my Friendly Local Game Store apparently. While I have wanted to paint some of these minis since I first saw them, I haven't been sure about diving into the entire game. Well, two of our group are completely addicted so I will have folks to play the game with, unlike my Burrows and Badgers undertakings. I must admit to being a little overwhelmed by the contents of the Core Set. There are all the rules, templates, counters, dice, terrain, and minis needed to play. Speaking of the minis, there are 13 in the new set and they are wonderful little sculpts, great detail and movement. I think this is going to be fun. Now I just need to avoid diving into the deep end and trying to acquire everything. Anyone who has been following this blog will know I have failed to restrain myself. Despite still not having played the game I have just about every character made and two thirds of them are painted. At least I'm getting some good work done.

Barry Windsor Smith has been one of my favorite illustrators since his days on the original Conan comic (now that’s a character for AMG to add).  He created one of my favorite illustrations of the pre-Wolverine, Weapon X and one of the coolest comic series ever.  Since that is the basis of this sculpt, I was always going to need one of my own.  I love it when AMG includes a custom base and this is straight out of the pages of the comic, bear prints and all.  Despite tiny pieces the kit went together easily.  I tried to keep the paint job simple.

Maverick is Ready to Join the Weapon-X Affiliation

Never huge fan of Maverick as he was one of Leifeld’s badly drawn characters.  I mean, how does a guy who can’t draw feet get hired to draw comics?  I do like the character’s kit in MCP though. Maverick’s like the Anti-Healing Factor guy which seems a good idea as there is a lot of healing factor out there in the game.  It is a fun little figure to assemble and paint.  I decided to go with True Metallic Metals for his armor as I like the shine.

Some More Work in Progress Shots

One thing I do to keep my motivation up is quick pieces, like street lights and hydrants, what I call street furniture.  The pieces are generally less detailed and paint quickly.  They look good with basic paint jobs and rarely have the fine detail of character models.  Of course I like to add tags and sticker details but that is my own short coming.  None of them need to be perfectly painted as they really only exist for folks like the Hulk to throw at other characters.

I’ve mentioned that I am a public school Art teacher.  The new semester just started giving me three new classes to prep for which cuts into my own time. There really is no rest for teachers.  lol  I’ve still kept my goal of at least 30 minutes at the work table every day.

Angela, great demon hunter originally of Image Comics, acquired by Marvel years ago and has now joined my Asgard Affiliation.  She is really fun sculpt, balanced on her ribbons as she is.  Once assembled it was clear to me she is only slightly more stable than Storm.  This is also the first MCP model I broke while painting.  one of her ribbons snapped when I bumped it.  Fortunately I was able to glue it easily and with little evidence it had happened.  She painted fairly quickly with the exception being the red and yellow details on the black ribbons.  They are small, in large number, and trying to cover black.

Sister to Heimdall and sometimes lover of Thor, Lady Sif is painted and ready for action.  Like the other three figures in the new Asgard set, Sif has a cool pose with lots of movement.  She is a very clean sculpt as well with sharp details and she painted up nicely.  I have yet to run an Asgard affiliation but I’ve got plenty painted at this point so really should try them out. Gaining 2 Power a turn seems like a nice ability.

Heimdall is painted , surrounded by all the colorful glory of the bifrost. I have loved this figure since I first saw it.  I painted the figure and the base separately for obvious reasons. There was no way I was going to leave the rainbow off the base.  I wanted to try and paint that!  I think it came out fairly well.  Once I glued him in place I really liked it.  This Asgard affiliation is really coming along.

If the Executioner is around, the Enchantress can’t be far away.  She has the power to beguile and enchant others in the comics but she is a very unpleasant person.  I don’t know how that plays out in the game but it should be fun finding out.  I have played MCP again recently but that is for another post.

Some Table Talk...Painting Table That is.

A bit of house keeping here.  Wanted to post the last figures I finished in 2024 as well as a bit of work in progress or WiP as the cool kids say.  I really try to get at least 30 minutes a day at the table. I am an artist and public school art teacher so it is part of my peace of mind.  So is getting miniatures painted because, like terrain, storing finished work isn’t annoying like storing potential.  While I am a painter first and gamer second (though just) I do prefer playing with pretty toys so try to get things done for the games I want to play.

The point of my rambling is that I’m trying to document this incremental progress to help me better gauge progress and keep motivated.
