About the Project

ATO is my first paint project where I am primarily using acrylic paints and it took me a long time to do research on paint recipes and techniques to get the results I wanted (or close to wanting). I can imagine many other people being in the same situation I was in, namely wanting to paint good looking minis but not knowing where to begin or which colors to use. So, I decided to make a paint guide for ATO (cycles 1-5 + godform miniatures) in the hopes of helping people out. This guide is heavily inspired by the paint guide made by Lawnor here on this website. His miniatures are awesome and I recommend you check him out as well!

Cycle 5 Titans part 1: Titan X and Executioner

Titan X and Executioner

Doing both at the same time, because they share paint recipes. Titan X came out great in my opinion. Love the model of the miniature as well. I know that this isnt a titan you can play with but it is a titan you will face off against like the primordials. Cool concept.

Like the model of the executioner as well, but not as much as Titan X. Still cool titan and model. Really love the poses all the miniatures in this game have. It sets the mood and make all the models stand out.

Ur-Fleece

Painting Aeon Trespass was a learning experience. One way to learn is to set certain challenges. With the Icarian Harpy for example I set the challenge to only use GW paints to see  if I could get something that I would be pleased with when limiting my paint options. This also required mixing some colors to get the colors I wanted.

Another example of a challenge is this miniature, where I set myself the challenge to not drybrush. Now drybrush is a great technique to get decent effects with minimal effort. However, it doesnt always look as good compared to doing everything by hand so to speak. So thats what I did with Ur-Fleece. I wanted to combine everything I had learned into painting this miniature, namely blending, layering, highlighting, etc. I also did a lot of mixing of colors to get the colors I wanted. And to be completely honest, this is one of my best painted miniatures. In my opinion it shows how far I have gotten. As such, the paint recipes for this one will be a bit complex, but it was well worth it.

Meduketos

I like the art of this game, but not for painting. For painting the art sucks. The colors are desaturated, a lot of shadow is used and sometimes parts of the body are covered by text or is absent from the picture because of the pose of the titan or primordial. Someone of the ITU discord helped with providing a good picture of this primordial which helped. Pretty happy how this one turned out. Should have pushed the bulbs on the head with some lighter blue tones. Might still do that later.

Not my best work to be honest. The art had some OSL and I tried to recreate it without searching for techniques on how to do OSL. I didnt care enough and it shows. Not my best work, but it still doesnt look to bad in my opinion.

Cycle 4 titans part 2: Lunarlander, Wishender and Immortal Truthbearer

Wishender

This one was a bit trickier to paint for me, because I found out that this titan has a glass armor. You wouldnt say that if you looked at the art of this titan, because it looks more like metal, but the item cards show that its armor is made of glass. Never painted glass before. So what I did was choose colors that came close to the art and put on a thin layer of gloss varnish. Really happy with how this one turned out.

Shadowdancer

Came around to post again and this time it is about the titans of cycle 4. This one took a bit more time than the others, because I had to come up with a layering pattern for both the cloth and the hair. Came out nice if you ask me. The purple cloth has a bit of shine to it and I think it is because of the ink. I might go over it with some matt varnish as per Lawnors advice. Have to do that later.

Cloudsoarer

The titans of cycle 4 including this one came out great in my opinion but painting all the little details took a loooooong time. Couldnt help myself though as Im a bit of a perfectionist. Had to paint them and Im happy how it turned out. For the sword I used the same paint recipes as Midascore. Seems like it was made of its parts.

I have finished painting all the titans of the expansion box. The pictures and paint recipes will be added next week. In the meantime I am replacing and adding some new pictures with better lighting. Lawnor (a user on this site that has inspired me to make this guide) has graced me with his wisdom! He commented on this project and gave two points of advice one of which was to up the lighting on the pictures to make the highlights more visible. I took that advice to heart and took some new pictures. I am not going to replace the images in which all sides are displayed as that takes too much time. However, I can add some new front facing pictures with better lighting. The miniatures I havent posted yet will have the images uploaded from all sides as I still had to take those pictures.

Thank you Lawnor for your advice and you really made my day commenting on this project! More posts will be coming soon.

Babelian Lunacy
This one took a lot longer than I wanted. First, I had to try multiple times to get the base coat right. Might have taken like 5 attempts. So that took longer than I thought. Second, I had to paint every recess and raised areas by hand. Drybrushing doesnt work here, or at least not entirely, to catch all the elements to save time. Even though it took longer than I wanted it came out great and I am happy with it.

One more note here is that I did something strange with the ichor vines. I applied black, gloss varnish and dry brushed green over it. Most of the time you apply the paint first before applying a varnish. Varnish is almost always the last step. I really like the final result.

Grey stone (base)

This miniature also took a while to paint. Was kinda struggling with how I wanted the wings and how to paint the gold parts without actually using metallic paints. Using a metallic gold to paint the golden claws for example felt off to me. So I opted to using golden brown colors and work my way from there. Painting the body was not that difficult, because it had quite some texture that made it possible to drybrush the highlights. That saved some time, but the wings and the golden parts had to be done by hand. That took the most time here.

Demidjinn
This one was pretty easy. The miniature doesnt have a lot of elements to paint. Combined with the fact that I already had paint recipes for some of the elements painting this miniature didnt take a lot of time. However, getting the desert base right took some time, but I got there in the end.

Cycle 4 primordials part 1: Demidjinn and Dahaka

Dahaka
This miniature was even easier to paint than the previous one. However, the problem with this miniature is that it is some kind of ghostly creature portrayed without a lot of color. The danger painting this miniature was that it would become boring as there wasnt a lot of color or variation in color. It is a mostly black creature with different shades of green. So I had to think about this one a bit and push the greens as much as I could while also staying true to the art of this miniature. I have posted a picture of the art so you can see how it turned out. Really happy with this one and it didnt take a lot of time either.

With the Icarian Harpy, this is also one of the last primordials I have painted. Like the Icarian Harpy, one of the best painted in my opinion. Now I understand that it might become a bit old that I am saying that with almost every miniature that I am posting, but I can really see the progression in my painting skills. I am not a pro by any means, but my paintjobs have become much better in my opinion.

With the Hypertime Oracle I wanted to mimic what Lawnor did with his, because his looked great. I especially liked how he dirtied up the cloth. So I tried to mimic it without ever having done a gradient wash like that. Even though I had never done such a wash before I did succeed beyond my own expectations.

I also mimiced the way Lawnor painted the wings but gave it my own twist by highlighting the feathers the same way I did with the Icarian Harpy. It came out great in my opinion, but it took a looooooooong time to paint those hightlights. Dont think I will ever do it like that again, but I am a perfectionist so I might just do it again in the future even though I dont want to. XD
