About the Project

This is going to be a quick a project to get the battle of bulge starter set painted. A bit of background, I currently have some builders in to do some work and they saw my tiny fighting men and asked about them. I gave them the background and what it was all about and we got to talking about their interest in WW2, so I decided although I have to WW2 figures from Zero Two Hundred Hours, I don't really have anything like a bolt action army. So I decided to purchase the starter box and try and get table ready before they leave.

Day 10 and done (mostly)

I am going to call these done for now.

The infantry have all had a coat of gloss and then some AK ultra matt through an airbrush and rims have been painted. Americans have Dark Drab and the Germans have Dark feldgrau rims not sure you’ll notice the difference.

I have also completed the Greyhound mostly using the airbrush. Primed Grey (halfords) then a coat of Dark Drab (went through the airbrush well once I got the mix right), then a zenith with Medium Drab. Then some camo with black, and then the transfers, I ringed star in the set I felt was too big for the front of so I left that for now.

The whitewash was sponged on with a very watery mix, and the same for the brown mud (that was mix of German dark brown camo and black). The whole thing got a wash of Ultimate weather wash Dark Dirt and then I wiped it off with a damp cloth.

Finally the tool handles were picked out with Rifle Brown and the metal part with Steel. The machine gun on the top and the ariels were painted with Steel and then given a wash of Black Tone.

It still needs a varnish but these are done. I still have the ruined farm house from the set but I’m leaving that for now.

Day 9
Day 9

I have applied the Brown Tone all over the Americans apart from the skin and Germans where uniform is not white. The Germans also got a black tone on the weapons.

The skin of both was done with Warm Skin Tone.

The basing is AK’s muddy ground with AK’s snow over the top.

Just the rims and varnish left for these. Couldn’t start the Greyhound today as both my airbrushes decided not to work. I am hoping a night in some cleaner will sort them out.

Day 8

Not much of a change today but a lot of tidying up and getting ready for a wash.
Hair and skin have all done and I am going to apply a brown tone to the Americans and Germans uniform which isn’t white.

Hoping to get them done and based tomorrow so I can move on the Greyhound which has been primed grey so far.

Day 6

No major changes today, on the Germans:

  • Repaint the blue grey parts of the uniform (Vallejo Luftwaffe uniform)
  • Attempted a camo smock and a couple of helmets (camo sand base, German camo green and camo brown in blotches over the top)
  • Wooden parts of the weapons (rifle brown)

For the Americans:

  • Boot gators (light drab)
  • Repaint the great coats (Vallejo flat brown)

Both sides need tidy up of the white parts and all of them need their hair done and then they are ready for a wash and some basing and I might leave it there for now.

Day 5

Not a lot done today, had to travel for work so time was limited.

New paint sets have arrived and they are very nice. There is no guide in the box as to which paint goes where but the name of the paint sort of gives it away was to where it goes.

One thing I didn’t realise until I read the article in May’s wargames illustrated was that 9 of the paints are common to all 3 paint sets.

Still have repainted the American helmets and trousers (medium drab) and the wooden parts of their weapons (rifle brown).

Day 4

Webbing is painted for the Americans (Vallejo Karki) along with the wooden parts of their weapons (Vallejo wood) and their gloves (Army painter leather brown).

All the skin is done on both (Vallejo barbarian flesh) and metallic parts of the weapons (leadbelcher) as well as the boots (black for the Germans, Army painter Oak brown for the Americans).

New paint sets still haven’t arrived.

Day 3
Day 3

I have ordered the new paint sets from army painter for Germans and Americans but while I wait for them to turn up I realised I had some of the Vallejo paints listed in the guide so went ahead and started painting.

I have used Luftwaffe Uniform on the Germans but mine doesn’t seem as blue as the pictures so I may have to come back to that.
