Another reason for the project going moribund without a model being finished was I’d picked a varied bunch of minis as a first batch, and planned to do all other batches in a similar way.

There was method to my madness here, and it’s something I’d done before. A long time ago I did a dark age (sorry early Medieval) Welsh army for Saga. These I didn’t want to be uniform so I broke up the units. I’d paint a blue batch, a red one, etc. each batch containing hearthguard, levy and regular minis.

I wanted the same here: one batch with blue feathers, another with red, etc. It’ll save a tiny bit of painting but maybe at the price of my motivation. I think I’ll do better with finishing one unit, then another, and so on.

So here’s the next batch: it’ll join up with two archers in the first batch and give me my first completed unit.

I picked up the Tribals as a pre-order. The internet tells me this was about six years ago. I’d intended to use them as a gang for Frostgrave Ghost Archipelago, and maybe expand to a force for Dragon Rampant I liked the idea of a barbarian army from the jungle, rather than the frost and furs theme of many others.

I began painting and quickly found my scheme too complicated to be arsed with for an entire army. So they gathered dust.

These are half of the first batch. They stayed in the back of my mind and eventually contrast paints existed. I came up with a new scheme.

This feels a lot more achievable. I painted one figure to about completion.

The extreme closeup is not kind to one of an army but he’s pretty good from a distance. This one’s a bit neutral-heavy but many of his comrades will have feathers and so on, so the entire unit will be a little brighter.

I think I’ve found something that works.
