About the Project

The mists clear and the moolight penetrates the pitch black night uncloaking rank upon rank of silent warriors, motionless as the towering peaks above. They emanate a malign fury. In the fold of the valley below the faint lights of the dwidling fires of the miners' camp can be seen between the dark mounds of fresh spoil heaps. None will survive this night and the sacred roots of the mountain shall be restored. After, the Dvergr will seek redress and ensure all remember why their sacred stones are never to be disturbed.

Having only just finished the Draugr I wasn’t planning on these Ragnarok Miniatures Dvergr getting to the painting desk for a few months.  Then we got “Mountain” as a theme for this month’s PaintComp.  My mind went straight to dwarves and these naughty dwarves are the only ones I can find easily as I’m packing in order to move.

I had to come up with a paint scheme quickly and quite liked the very dark scheme sculptor Colin Patten used in their initial Kickstarter

Those are great.  I love the contrast between the basic black and the very shiny dark metal.

I’ll try something similar.  First a simple zenith:

Then skintones will be added with a layer of Speedpaint Wolf Grey highlighted with Bonewhite.  The black Speedpaint was for the hair and this didn’t need a highlight.

Clothing was done with the Black terrain liquid pigment.  This black also went onto the leather with a subtle highlight of German Black Brown.  Spear shafts and axe handles were done with the Concrete liquid pigment with a wash of Strong Tone to get a bit of wood grain.

I wanted a very dark metal blued steel look.  I started with a layer of Dark Star Blue Steel, a mid tone of Dark Star Steel and highlights with Vallejo Metal Color Steel.  This won’t be as bright a highlight as on the studio paint job.  That’s fine for these chaps who are the militia pikes.  I’ll probably go with a much brighter top highlight on the elites and leaders.

That’s it.  Finished:
