About the Project
Sometime in the very early 90's, while I was in primary school I was introduced to this thing called White Dwarf - there was a battle report in it that locked into my brain, Epic scale, Imperial guard vs Eldar and I was instantly imprinted - Massed artillery, huge tanks and the idea of normal man facing off against the galaxy set me from day 1, I would play the guard. A bit of negotiating with my dad and we obtained a copy of Rogue trader and a box of marines - we went upscale to 40k. Shortly after the first boxed edition dropped and we we in, I had to have guard... Fast forward 10 years and I had my army and we were playing regularly (I didn't win much!) and my collecting was in overdrive. Then came working life and children and as these things happen I couldn't keep up with the edition churn I lost my love of 40k & it got shelved. Somewhere between then and now I had re-undercoated all the vehicles I had so it wasn't a riot of colour any longer, just a wall of black tanks and massed infantry in various stages of paint. Other games have come and then joined the guard on the shelves, warmachine, x-wing, cruel seas & more but the guard have sat waiting. A couple of months ago my only just a teenage son decided he wanted to do some orks - he's been making odd models for years but he has had his calling as a speed freak, then I saw the announcement that the next edition of 40k was to be a rerun of my first boxed one. Then the spring clean challenge notice. The universe is telling me it is time to get these tanks back into action.

One down...
With a little splash of speed paint on some model stowage and a towcable made from a bit of string to complete I’m calling this one done! I’ve sprayed a light dusting and added a touch of rust and oil effects I’m still practicing with – I’m not happy with the old decals and the way they’ve interacted with the wash but I realised looking back at the hellhounds (which were the only unit I actually finished before they were put away) I think I’d used a decalfix solution or similar & mine has long since dried up. I’ll have to see what I can find out there that will improve those transfer films!
But we’re off the start line at least!
Learning how to airbrush..
I got an airbrush for Christmas and figured this was an ideal chance to actually try and learn how to use it!
From black to basecoat in what felt like no time at all!
I did have to buy myself some of the right shades of paint to match the old colour scheme I was doing!
Where we started..
I don’t think for a minute I’ll have this lot painted by summer (it’s taken me a week to even do this post!) – but if I can get at least some of them with colour on I’ll be able to field a painted army when I have to face me sons speed freaks!
